Absolutely gorgeous! I have been a big Catalina fan for many years. If I had ever had the means to learn to fly and own any plane I wanted, I think it might have been a PBY! The sound of this RC model is fantastic, too, with its 3-cylinder radials. Although I can appreciate the advantages of the electrics in wide use, I really think the manufacturers need to come up with a chip and speaker system that puts out the appropriate big inline, v-12, or radial engine sound the real aircraft had/has. Even as far as reproducing the sporadic coughing of a big radial first coming to life! If any company wants to take this idea and run with it, you’re welcome to it!
I wish that the model engine makers would make right hand engines so we could get the simplicity and safety of counter rotating props. It was plane to see (pun intended) that even with full right rudder, it was wanting to pull hard left. My large scale A-26 suffers with the same problem. Not enough rudder authority at slow speed and high power.
Yep … breaking that water barrier isn’t easy. it needs raw power. When the Seaborne seaplane lands and takes off where I live, I can hear the sound from several miles away. There is literally a two second delay from seeing it and hearing it for me. Bucket list? Fly in a seaplane from St. Thomas to St. Croix? 🗽📣
I suspect that during the water tests, Catalina collected water into the fuselage, during takeoff, the water moved to the tail of the fuselage, after which the hangover with the transition to a stall on the wing - corkscrew. The model is very beautiful respect to the author! With best wishes for further creativity!
This was the first water launch of the model. The fact that the nose went down was due to the pilot who simply gave too much throttle during the first attempts. ;-)
I remember the hangers and ramps on the local Naval base that housed these. I can't recall them flying, I do remember the Naval blimps being phased out, flying over head.
I recall reading that the pilots would pat down all the crew members to make sure that none of them had a lighter or book of matches in a stray pocket. These planes were essentially flying gas cans.
Lovely model of an iconic amphibian...Like the wind speed you often see modellers flying in you cant scale it or, in this case the waves. If one were to scale the waves to the airplane it would probably being like trying to take off in a heavy swell of very large waves....A dead calm or very gentle breeze might be advantageous...
Only watched part of it. Great model, but the crappy music ruined the sound. If you must have musak, keep it in the background so we can hear those engines sing.
Wie hast du die Motoren synchronisiert? Konnte eine alte DC3 mit 2 OS glow übernehmen aber habe leider keine Ahnung wie ich die Motoren so hinkriege das sie immer gleich viel Schub leisten.
Yes, I indeed built a second Catalina with carbon combs composite fuselage (vacuum processed) and shaved off 5 kg: ruclips.net/video/dpzwDOaHb8A/видео.html
Nice plane and nice viceo, a shame I have to hear your choice of music over the engines, prefer silence so finally muted and missed any further engine sounds.. :(
The electronics are well protected in the center section of the wing. So far iI haven't had any problems with anything getting wet. The airplane is mostly wood construction. After a few starts you notice that the wood has soaked up water. Those tiny ripples in the water are scale equivilent to a two to three foot swell I would guess. I don't know what kind of conditions the full size Catalina could take, but anything more than a millpond is misery in a flying boat.
you have to put a drone with a camera (be able to see it on an LCD screen) behind this model plane so that the pilot can better see the direction in which the model plane is going. this way you can more accurately control the flight of the model airplane.
I did not buy it, it is built from a wooden kit. For the Ms. Pickup, I constructed the fuselage myself in the original form and then built it in CFK composite construction on the basis of the 1/8th model.
Well, that’s just spectacular. I have always loved the PBY and find this thrilling. It appears to my untrained eye that it rides very, very slightly down at the nose when in a slow taxi on the water. Is that the case?

I had the pleasure of watching a real Catalina at an air show in Bray, Ireland yesterday. This model is a beauty.
Always loved the Catalina. And to watch a scaled RC version taking off from the water is pretty awesome. Top notch. 👌

This is a treat to see. Never saw an R.C. version take off in water.
ruclips.net/video/tY3VcutCuQU/видео.html
Impressive model! I'm amazed the motors kept running with all that spray going over them.
Those tiny engines must've been in a lot of strain.
The energy required to take off from water is enormous compared to a runway. Because of the scaling its shows the difficulty.
Eh. No. For instance an amphibious Twin Otter even specifies less take off distance on water than on a runway.
I wish that the model engine makers would make right hand engines so we could get the simplicity and safety of counter rotating props. Very impressive. First PBY RC model I have seen and it's truly amphibious like it's full size inspiration.

Тоже супер, отлично посадил!!!
I wish we could have heard it properly.
Never overlay music on this type of thing. The engines ARE the music!
I think the challenge is how to put the nose up from the water and that is the right time to take off
I went to Catalina (island) on this type of seaplane. A bit frightening. I don't remember it pushing that much water at the bow.
That took courage, confidence, and skill both building and flying. A few $ also helped.
A lot of $$$!
Beautiful built..fabulous flight!

It would be a nice touch if you add bombs and bomb racks on the underwings, and machine gun barrels in the tail and waist blisters.
She's a beauty, with all the clunky spars and gear showing. The body gunners' bubbles seem a bit large, but that's just a jealous observation JL
