  • Poop. You flush it, and usually that’s the end of the story. But to scientists like Mark Smith, poop is more than just waste - it’s medicine.
    Join Mark Smith and Jack Gilbert for a Reddit AMA on Tuesday, March 6th! Follow us @TangledBankHHMI for more details.
    A healthy intestinal tract is teeming with trillions of microbes, which generally keep us infection-free by fending off attacks from bad bacteria that make us sick. But sometimes, bad bacteria like Clostridium difficile can take hold, causing chronic and painful diarrhea, or even death. “C Diff” is normally treated with an intensive course of antibiotics, but this sometimes makes things worse by weakening the gut microbiome and leaving it susceptible to further infection. Mark Smith things he has a solution: poop. He’s treating patients who aren’t helped by the standard antibiotic treatment with new “fecal transplants.” It’s exactly what it sounds like-transplanting stool from healthy donors into sick patients. Doctors have observed remarkable recovery rates with this novel technique… but how does it work?

    A lot of people say I'm not going to eat a s*** pill I'm not going to have a tube stuff down my throat and having punk s*** in my stomach but if you are suffering bad enough you will do anything and people that say they won't have never really suffered they don't know what it's like to truly suffer

    I've had a C-DIFF infection once about a year ago. Luckily I was able to use antibiotics to clear the infection. I was preented the option of FMT if the antibiotics didn't work. Luckily I did not have to take that course.

    This was a really interesting summary. Makes me wonder about the variability in the effectiveness of different donors poo? Do some some donors have superpoops that make the patients recover really well, or are all donors pretty similar?

    • @icontainmultitudes1070
      @icontainmultitudes1070  6 лет назад +7

      Well as far as research can tell, healthy poop is healthy poop! When looking at studies where patients chose a healthy donor themselves vs anonymous healthy donors, there is no significant difference in effectiveness.

      I need to do this because I just can’t pass out any bowel movements. I was diagnosed with MS and it started after that with not being to go. I have inflamed all. Straining and pushing so I’m very desperate. Thank gosh I’m slim n I didn’t balloon over this problem not being able to release. Takes 3hrs concentration with my mind (brain) to my bowels to release anything. Drives me crazy and feel like ripping my hair out :(
      PS I removed my MS no more pain but the only thing that reminds me of MS is problems with bowels now. 2019 was when I was diagnosed with MS after a MRI scan and that took less than a year to repair my myelin Sheath causing the pain but Bowelllllls longer. I have never taken any pain medication for pain because I’ve always believed in fighting the root cause and not masking it But my bowels are taking longer to restore:((((((

      pamela daley the reason we need poo as a medicine is because of antibiotics. Its because of antibiotics that certain viruses have no weakness to any antibiotics available at this time. For years antibiotics have been the easy answer. Now that easy answer has created super organisms.

    • @icontainmultitudes1070

      Gives us hope too! Although rates of successful treatment are not as high as with Cdiff infection, FMTs are already being used in studies treating conditions like ulcerative colitis and inflammatory bowel disease. Even more interesting is that patients who receive FMT for a GI condition have experienced the resolution of symptoms related to other diseases, such as multiple sclerosis. The mechanisms are not clear yet, but the door is open to research a wide range of FMT possibilities that we should expect to develop over the next several years.

    Years ago I had a bad sinus infection. Doctors prescribed five rounds of antibiotics back-to-back, resulting in a C Diff diagnosis.
    After losing 30 pounds, I was nauseated everyday and could barely eat anything.
    And then…
    I decided to consume $200/month in probiotic supplements. I mixed and matched lots of different strains.
    Started eating more, little by little, regained my weight and got better!
    Very intrigued by fecal transplant therapy and hope we learn more soon.
