Just so people know, the previous version of this was 1000 Spikes. It was released through Xbox Live Indie games a few years ago. This is a complete overhaul of the original and one of the things you can't see by watching is that the controls have been perfected. This game handles so much better than the previous. Also the visuals are better, there are over 10 different characters with different abilities, and a bunch of bonus gameplay modes that allow up to 4 players to play together. People bitching that this is just a quick cash in should check themselves before they wreck themselves.
Oh yes, this will be good. Also finally a platformer that isn't a puzzle platformer. I've also disabled replies because you chumps are getting on my nerves with your big mouths.
I know. I'm so fucking sick of puzzle platformers. Almost as sick as I am of retro indie games. I feel like everything possible has been done with 8-bit graphics, they need to stop being lazy and start trying new design styles. How many indie games actually have original graphics compared to these pixel games? ;_:
Roll Fizzlebeef Less money and time spent on graphics and more time and money spent on game design, controls, you know, THE GAME! Good graphics on a shitty game still keeps the game shitty. But shitty graphics on a good game makes the game just a tad less good.
EliteAssass1n Bull-fucking-shit. Indie gaming is huge, they charge ridiculous amounts for their games these days. Like $10, $15 for a lot of games, that used to be outrageous but that's often the norm nowadays. I'm not saying indie companies are rich, they're not, and I know it's hard for them to produce games, but there is an element of laziness involved. I understand some people can't physically create anything other than 8-bit pixel graphics in order to actually create a game, but it doesn't stop other bigger developers from being lazy and just sticking to the same style. It needs to be said that this is tiresome now. How long are you going to keep making retro style games? There are tens of thousands of them now. It needs to stop. Make a fucking text adventure if you have to. Just stop making these sorts of games. >_>
"There's five oceans in the world, what are they? Atlantic, Pacific, Indian, Arctic... i can't think of the fifth one. There's an Arctic Ocean. There you go." Atlantic, Pacific, Indian, Arctic, Arctic. Geography with NorthernLion.
Here's the silliest story of searching as to how I got to this video. First, I search "Northernlion thousand and one spikes" and get various other youtubers. Defeated, I search up "rockleesmile 1001 spikes" and get Game Grumps, and this video. Not much, but in my boring life, it's notable.
"There are five oceans Atlantic, Pacific, Arctic, Indian... I can't think of the other one. There's an Arctic Ocean, there you go" you said Arctic twice egghead
NL! Don't worry about dying a lot or being stuck on the same world for a long time. It's part of the fun for us, and worrying just makes it more frustrating for you, and therefore less likely to continue playing :)
Hey NL I think the key with the shooting statues is to watch the mouths, they actually telegraph it pretty well, Also it's awesome to have another platforming Lets Play, makes me nostalgic for your Super Meat Boy days :3
Honestly I don't really see the Super Meat Boy portion of the SMB + IWBTG comparison other than there being an optional collectible. The difference between those games, and what makes one way better than the other in my opinion, is the difference between being difficult to execute and just being unfair. When you can see what needs to be done ahead of time and it's simply tough to complete, it's difficult. When you get traps that trigger and kill you only when you stand in their way that you couldn't possibly know about ahead of time it's just unfair and bullshit. This game seems to fall pretty squarely in the IWBTG territory here; there's so much that is impossible to see coming and it makes the difficulty artificial in my opinion - not by clever level design and game mechanics but by forced trial and error. And this is just the beginning of the game. For me personally, this is an easy one to pass on buying.
Meh, I've now put a couple hours into it and you can see pretty much everything coming, it's not like IWBTG at all. The only thing that you can't see ahead of time are the spikes that activate when you walk over them, and you can see the tips of those right before they spring up, giving you time to react. It's definitely punishing, but you're wrong about it being trial and error -- if you're careful, at least.
I wouldn't say that entirely. The spikes that come out of the floor when you activate them are pretty obvious if you think about the location most of them are in, and therefore you can often figure out how to proceed before executing, whilst with IWBTG, most things that just cannot be predicted, whilst this only has a couple of those moments when new traps are introduced.
To be fair, the tutorial is really good! it tells you exactly what kinds of tiles result in certain kinds of traps, so if you're surprised by being shot by an arrow trap or stabbed by a spike, you're probably not paying enough attention. So I wouldn't necessarily say this is like IWBTG, as that game just kind of pulls traps out of its ass with no rhyme or reason.
I LOVE Völgarr the Viking so this looks really damn promising, i think i will get this and that multiplayer mode is such a nice bonus. Thanks for introducing me to this Northernlion, i am going to have lots of laughs and cries with this game :D
NL, you should consider playing "Tales of Maj'Eyal", an actual rougelike with very unique mechanics, nice visuals and tons of fun builds/combos to try out. It's definitely worth at least a "Let's Look At".
Tip for 2-5: Don't hide behind the wheeled statues in the first bit. You need the extra practice shooting down arrows to comfortably get through the rest of the level.
Okay. Watched your first 9 minutes, and I love it so far. I'm not watching any further, because... well, you play Dark Souls, I don't have to explain this to you!! Good find, thank you! This, and Retro Game Crunch - I would love to see how much of Paradox Lost you and the boys can do!
Can't say I'm caring for this one too much. Stuff like FTL, Hearthstone, Xcom, and BoI were great because those are games about weighing your options and making decisions which translates well to solo commentary. Playing a game that's mostly about repeating the same actions over and over until muscle memory sets in, not so much.
This looks like it plays remarkably similar to the Gameboy Donkey Kong from long ago, which was one of my favorites as a kid (and also punishingly difficult towards the end)
I'm going to totally live vicariously through you by watching this new series NL. My wife won't let me play games like these in the house anymore. Apparently, my use of vulgar language is a bad influence on our daughters...:P
Thank you for video! I would say that this game is rather for hardcore games who like big challenges and punishing gameplay that will not forgive you any single mistake. It might be objectively good game but not for me as I prefer the games that you can relax at instead of feeling anger and hopelessness because you were killed again by something that appeared out of nowhere.
It's eight hours till it's available. Don't lie to me, Ryan. But in all seriousness, really looking forward to this game! Multiplayer should be fun on PC/Wii U and the portability will be great on 3DS/Vita. I'll have to buy so many versions. :(
Holy shit, you're right! I think if someone would put out Rick Dangerous for steam now they would make shittons of money. The music of the title screen on the A500 was absolutely gorgeous. And gameplay was even better. And dude, you dont feel old, you ARE old. You're not alone, dont you worry...
webraider The music and the SFX especially was just perfect. "WWAAAAAAHH!!", never got tired of that. And by the way, there is a free browser version of Rick Dangerous, just google it. It's not quite the same though, without a joystick, that often became the victim of mindless violence out of frustration, for doing a kick instead of shooting for instance.
Love your work NL and especially love seeing a new lets play of a unique game genre. Just one suggestion: Don't apologize to us when you die in the same spot a bunch. Personally that was the most entertaining part, I felt like I should have been apologizing: "NL I'm sorry I keep giggling when you die there because God knows I wouldn't do any better, but its still fun to watch you die." Keep up the sighing under your breath and exasperation though, those really sell the true depth of this game...lol
This seems very much like *Rick Dangerous* on Amiga. Except it looked better, and had a lot more features. Those dart-shooting face-stone blocks; vicinity/step-triggered spikes; straight from Rick Dangerous. It also had a multitude of different enemies, that most of had a simple, yet semi-inconsistent AI. Instead of 1001 lives and unlimited knives, you had 6 lives, 6 bullets and 6 bombs, and you needed to find ammo/bomb boxes to refill on those.
This game doesn't remind me of SMB. Oh, well...looks fun as hell though. Might consider getting it. For any fans of Nicalis games, I'm currently doing a Let's Play of Cave Story+ over on my channel!
It's an indie 2D platformer that uses trial-and-error gameplay, insta-death traps, and has a rapid iteration time when the player dies. No one's saying it's a clone of SMB, but it has a lot in common.
llazyllama1 SMB doesn't have trial-and-error gameplay. That's IWBTG mostly. I didn't say it's a clone of SMB at all, in fact it is a lot different. There's also like a million other platformers that have the other things you mentioned
I have this on my Wii U, but it won't let me use my game pad. I don't have an HDMI tv so I play my Wii U games on the game pad. On the 1001 spikes eshop page it sais it's compatible with the game pad, too. So, can somebody help me, please?
This game is about memorization of each level and trial and error. If they fired randomly the levels would become inconsistent each time and remove the main element of the game
k what. did i miss something? what is this game, and why is there suddenly a let's play of it on this channel? well, i'm looking forward to it anyway :D
Thanks for the support on the video guys :)
Congrats, can't wait for 696,694 subs. That is my favorite number.
Northernlion two years later still talking about micheal douglas

Oh hi Indeimaus, I was just on your channel asking a question :p
This guy comments, like a Maus.

this is so entertaining. Can you play this until you beat the game without dying? :P
"There's five oceans in the world, what are they? Atlantic, Pacific, Indian, Arctic... i can't think of the fifth one. There's an Arctic Ocean. There you go."
Atlantic, Pacific, Indian, Arctic, Arctic. Geography with NorthernLion.
I'm going to beat this with more lives than you. This is now my goal.
Happy Birthday PlayerUno!
you can do it Uno!!
Kate - ProBoxStudio Thanks a lot Kate
She's just picking the winning side!
Great choice, NL! Really looking forward to the rest of this LP.
Great commentary while playing, tone of the voice, funny moments, arguments always spot on......
Very pleased.
Anyone else feel anxious just by watching this?
this looks SO good. stoked for the series.
Episode 0001 out of 1001. This will be fun xD
If you enjoy the episode, please consider leaving a Like! It helps a lot. Thanks for watching and for your support. :)

This game looks pretty fun, but I'd never be able to make it through even that first world, so I'm glad you're playing and I can watch
"There are five oceans Atlantic, Pacific, Arctic, Indian... I can't think of the other one. There's an Arctic Ocean, there you go" you said Arctic twice egghead
Liked instantly when I heard that Wicker Man reference. This game might haunt me through the entire summer.
Love this game, so happy NL is playing it!

NL is immune to hair tearing.
That means he's got the patience of gods.
It's like Prinny: Can I Really be a Hero and Spelunky mixed together. I hope you don't rage quit, I liked the video a lot.

To me it reminds more of mega man in that sense, where you have to use trial and error to beat levels.
woah bats i havent seen a curse word from you since the earlier days on your videos
Oh good, another new series he will randomly drop after a few episodes. Fantastic.
You can play as Curly Brace...
Sold.
You're a hero for going through Hell for our entertainment Northernlion.
so, the trick to naming the 5 oceans is naming the arctic one twice? And not mentioning the southern one? I would have never guessed... XD
I'm just saying, Northenlion is going to end up with only 69 lives left..
Yes, indeed he shall.
Victor Milev Not possibruh. 42 is not a worthy number

Whoa, I was mentioned : O Captain Falcon and the 1001 moves
I think this will be a good Northernlion plays
Ryan's going to beat 1001 Spikes, finds Duck Tales extremely difficult. Fuck logic.
I LOVE Völgarr the Viking so this looks really damn promising, i think i will get this and that multiplayer mode is such a nice bonus. Thanks for introducing me to this Northernlion, i am going to have lots of laughs and cries with this game :D

@Northernlion: enormous patience on this game!
Oh yes, THIS! 500 Episodes more, Plz!!!
happy to see a new series!
Is Tropico still a series NL?
Tip for 2-5: Don't hide behind the wheeled statues in the first bit. You need the extra practice shooting down arrows to comfortably get through the rest of the level.

"It will have you pulling at what little hair you have left."
Oh NL, If only you knew what you become.
i love the sound when northernlion sighs it's the best sigh ever. =)
Will Tropico still continue now that this series is up?
I'm going to love this.

This is going to be super great.
Bristol actually IS an awesome place by the way. I live just down the road, can recommend it highly if you're ever in the UK.
I wouldn't go as far to say Bristol is "awesome"
Hey Ryan, hold in the shoot button instead of trying to time it, when dealing with traps. It is much easier because he shoots so fast
It is freaking Rick Dangerous!
I feel old now -_-
but it's actually fair.

I don't remember any of this backstory or those tutorial levels in the XBLA version from a few years ago.
when is this going to be available to europe?
"feel free to come to my house... Side note, don't come to my house..." Classic NL
Love your work NL and especially love seeing a new lets play of a unique game genre.

so what do the skulls do? bandages in super meat boy unlocked characters and if NL says they are similar do they do similar things?
I'm really looking forward to this! :D
Nice choice of a new LP.
1001 episodes later...
Thanks for the Wicker Man reference!
Wow it looks like a mix of SUPER MEAT BOY, SPELUNKY and INDIANA JONES :D looks pretty cool
Would you do more videos of The Binding of Isaac? I love watching your gameplay of it.
This seems very much like *Rick Dangerous* on Amiga. Except it looked better, and had a lot more features.

This made me laugh, a lot, gotta buy it tomorrow!
a rage through would be fucking amazing. it needs to be done!
Man, spelunky has really gone downhill graphics wise.. Kappa
You play cool games and you sound vaguely like John Krasinski.
Subscribed.
I feel like ive seen this before is it an old game?
I expect more borders...frankly I'd be surprised if I didn't get them at this point.
What's the matter, couldn't be 932 less spikes?
Great game, its also available on Vita!
This game doesn't remind me of SMB. Oh, well...looks fun as hell though. Might consider getting it. For any fans of Nicalis games, I'm currently doing a Let's Play of Cave Story+ over on my channel!
Looks great, keep it up.
"I don't mean to toot my own horn--" dies..
Cool :)
You gona do a WE recommend on NL Matt?
Brock Lee One day yes :)
WrecklessEating :)
Brock Lee :l
Hi Matt. :D
This game would make me so angry.
Which is why I have to buy it. #Masochism FTW
This was awesome!
This game came out a long long time ago as an indie game for the xbox 360, does anyone know what all the differences are?
I'd love to hear you do the Se7en quote.
isn't this in the Jonathans Blows Avatar on twitter?
So to anyone who has bought the game, How long is this game? Does it last like 2 hours or more or possibly less?
Loved the Wild Wild West reference ^_^
This was on XBL Community Games, about 2 years ago, iirc?
Correct, NL is just playing the steam version, released today.
How are the 360 controls on a mac?
This is really nothing like Super Meat Boy actually
ikr.
It's an indie 2D platformer that uses trial-and-error gameplay, insta-death traps, and has a rapid iteration time when the player dies. No one's saying it's a clone of SMB, but it has a lot in common.

Hudson Hawk SMB kinda does since you learn how bullets and such act (such as those dog bullets) by being killed by them
Hudson Hawk SMB doesn't have trial and error gameplay?! I must have played the wrong game then.
Oh hey! It's Jonathan Blow's twitter avatar!
Please finish this game!
If you finish this and rediscover your latent courage, I put it to you that you revisit Cave Story and defeat Ballos!
I wonder if there are actually 1001 spikes in this game.
I am excited NL!
NL sure loves his wincest.
Northernlion and the 1001 69s
I have this on my Wii U, but it won't let me use my game pad. I don't have an HDMI tv so I play my Wii U games on the game pad. On the 1001 spikes eshop page it sais it's compatible with the game pad, too. So, can somebody help me, please?
Gaben Hawkins and the 2002 lives
I want to play it but it's not out for like 6 hours!
I wish the dart shooters were set to fire at random intervals once triggered, but that might make it too difficult.
This game is about memorization of each level and trial and error. If they fired randomly the levels would become inconsistent each time and remove the main element of the game
i would like to buy this for my ps vita but ill wait for a sale which i know will happen. its crossbuy with ps4 too so you get both versions.
k what. did i miss something? what is this game, and why is there suddenly a let's play of it on this channel?
well, i'm looking forward to it anyway :D
