    So glad you posted this, BIF. I was always amazed at how well MJ could take off effortlessly in either jump mode. Dude is not from this planet, fuh rill! Additionally, MJ was a true basketball innovator. His kiss the rim dunk allowed him to go both horizontal and vertical off 2-feet. I never observed any other dedicated 2-feet jumpers execute from that side angle like MJ. He was a master of propioception and kinesiology. Much like the way he would dip the shoulder of his dribbling hand to elude his defender. I mean, MJ was already lightning quick (he ran the 40 in 4.3 secs). That little shoulder dip made him even faster and more elusive. MJ also perfected that reverse lay up where he would slap the wrist of the hand holding the ball to give enough momentum to make the shot. Who else even does this today?! Dude is not from this planet, fuh rill!

  • @thomas_2285
    @thomas_2285 6 лет назад +5

    Jordan's two foot leap is almost a two foot/one foot hybrid. He almost always turned his body, touched his right foot and then quickly transitioned his weight and momentum to his left foot out in front to lean into the jump. His feet were rarely side by side when he jumped like a true two foot vertical leaper.

    Great video and explanation, although I'd like to add one more thing. He's also great at leaping off either leg. This is perhaps more significant because he doesn't have to gather himself to jump. This allows him to jump of any position, angle, move, etc. There's been instances in which Bron had to gather himself after a move, and this allows the defense to contest him, or messes up his rhythm/timing. MJ would be able to finish strong because he could jump off either foot at an elite level, along with what the video presented.
    Great vids, keep em coming.

    • @popeyeisgood
      @popeyeisgood 7 лет назад +20

      i like to call it the speed of leaping. he basically has extra springs on his feet that it doesnt matter how and where he start the jump, he would have enough lift to finish the basket. he simply doesn't need to bend his knees much ( gathering in your word). this ability is then combined with his huge hand to allow jordan to be able to dunk over big men in traffic much more efficiently than kobe and lebron can ever do.

    In addition to being the best combo 1 or 2-foot leaper, Jordan was also easily - EASILY - the best leaper off a quick hop step in history. He barely needed to even flex his legs to get major vertical and jam on people, and he could do it off a hop step in any direction (forwards, sideways etc.). Just a super explosive leaper.

    What people never seemed to mentioned was that mike jumped very ..VERY QUICKLY..Kobe is not a particularly quick jumper...he has a lot of wind in his jump in his movements;very linear...with mike you blink and he jumped so quickly along with jumping very high...impossible to deal with. Mike had one of the most explosive jumping abilities I've ever seen...not only did he jump very high...but MOST IMPORTANTLY THE MAN JUMPED VERY ....VERY QUICKLY. ...his fast twitch muscles are phenomenal..that's why he could just stand in front of defenders and dunk right in their face...he jumps like a cat...very quick...they blink ...too late...no time to react to him. It will be along long time before we see anyone with the physical gifts skill level and mental mastery of the game like mike.

    I've always said this very thing to people but no one seems to understand. I'll be sharing this video to provide examples. Growing up and watching MJ play, I like every kid, I
    emulated him. As I learned the game and got really good at basketball, I switched from my default off 1 foot leaping to 2 foot leaping thanks to MJ, Kemp, and McDyess. In my prime I was getting just as high off two feet as I was with 1, and could dunk 10' rim at 14 years old, despite only being 5'8.5. This always gave me a huge advantage when rebounding, blocking, and driving to the hole. To me, this is a technique I'll be teaching my son so he can dominate street ball like his dad did.

    Thanks for making videos like this one showcasing & distinguishing mJ's greatness above the other great leapers in NBA history. Yes , above Vince ...sorry Vince lol. There's a alley oop he caught during his rookie season against the bucks where he didn't have much of a running start , went up with two hands and he's near chin level with the rim. Incomparable Freakish athletic ability to say the least. I still think his vertical leap was over "48....and that was in the mid 80's. 🙌🏽😎

    I think Zach lavine is actually a great example of a dude who is ELITE at jumping off both plants. Also pre-injury zion would also give jordan a run for his money for the "greatest combo 1/2 foot leaper". Kobe and prime westbrook are other examples of a dudes who jumped out the gym on both plants. Regardless, Jordan was definitely special in his ability to use both types of plants.

    • @catcountry0099
      @catcountry0099 2 года назад

      Zach Lavine isnt that good off two. And rarely is able to dunk on people, regardless of plant. Zion is still very two foot dominate, doesnt dunk on players off one, but good with it in transition. Kobe and Westbrook are two great exa of players that are great at both and dunk on players with both, but they cant jump like MJ, I think Vince deserves a mention too. Only guy that truly competes with MJ in this category.

    I've always considered the ability to jump off one or two feet very important. And being able to jump off either foot is very special. Not just when it comes to playing, but especially dunking. That said, I think while Vince Carter was primarily a two foot dunker, he could also jump off one foot very well, he could dunk from the free throw line easily and had many good dunks off one. A better example would've been Jason Richardson, he couldn't jump off one foot at all. And with Zach Lavine, he's also able to jump off two feet really well and get his head near the rim, he just feels more comfortable off one. Lebron on the other hand does not jump well off two, there's a clear 10-12 inch difference in how high he gets off one vs two. Westbrook can jump off either with ease. Blake Griffin and Gerald Green are other examples that primarily jump off two but can also jump really well off one. Zion Williamson might be the craziest, he is obviously insane off two, but can go off one with either foot and dunk with either hand. That ability will give him a big advantage when it comes to defense and rebounding, he has the potential to be a better shot blocker and rebounder than Lebron

      I agree with all of what you’ve said. You’ve watched these guys closely. So have I. Also Donovan Mitchell a great dunker off two feet but very different off one. Exactly! The most complete player in the game. He doesn't get credit for being fundamentally proficient, but he could do everything any coach needed him to do as a weapon on both ends & as a facilitator as needed. He actually changed the whole view of being an NBA calibre player. He entered a league of alcoholics who used the length of the season to play their way into shape, but he came in ready to compete. He forced organizations & the Association to catch up with him & Nike & Gatorade. Today's marketing STRATEGY is the offspring of what the rest of the NBA had to catch up to. Before MJ, it was Michael Jackson who was the most marketable, but it took the MJ to make the game a truly International Spectacle. That is still the modern marketing model in 2022. LeBron can never be the 🐐 because his impact on the game hasn't expanded or altered the game, internationally, nor has he forced change in HOW the game is played. In that respect, Steph would have a superior claim on 🐐, since he has EVERYONE believing they can shoot 50% from 3 & the rules encourage a 3pt barrage over everything else. The modern game is a COMMERCIAL construct, and the 💰 has influenced whistles that make it impure.

      I must give LeBron his credit, as well. He's laid the blueprint for today's players to follow in controlling where they play, and how quickly they can increase their pay through shorter contracts.

    And it wasnt just his takeoff that was special. Once he was in the air, if he had to spin, reach under or around, or fake to evade defenders he could do it while still keeping his balance. And if there wasnt an open shot he could double clutch, hold, and then shoot after he was descending since his hang time kept him above court longer than his defenders. And his legs did some crazy pumps, scissors, and things to counterweight the jukes and fakes that his upper body was doing. Its no wonder that the Pistons' basic defensive strategy against him was to just do anything neccesary to prevent him from take-off. Cant touch Jordan. BTW, another thing I liked about him his that he was a class sportsman and(crazy-big) role model who put up, took his hard licks, worked like crazy, and didnt Le-flop nor whine. And he certainly never sprayed his personal politics nor views all over his fans.

    3:56 he's running at full speed and jumps off 2 feet near the free throw line, unlike some players off if 2 foot jump, they have to slow down and gather then go up. He uses his 2 foot jump and speed for max height and length! sick finish. Insane.

    This to me is the main argument for Jordan being a better player than LBJ, Dr. J, Wilt, Kareem, Magic. Jordan seemed to have more tools at his disposal and could adapt to any situation almost instantly. He had virtually no weaknesses.
    Lebron is one of the greatest leapers off one leg, but looks awkward off two legs sometimes, and doesn't get near as high. Dr. J could jump off one or two, but is most remembered for gliding off of one leg and his ability to control the ball like very few players with his massive hands.
    Jordan also always stayed low in his stance when he was in attack mode, he could explode from this position with one motion upwards which made his drives to the basket very quick. A lot of times he has a full lean off his first step, like a 100 meter sprinter coming out of the blocks, he is almost falling forward to gain distance on the defender and makes his first step quicker and able to cover more distance, then he explodes from that forward momentum making it look almost effortless.

      Agree with most of what you said except about Wilt I can see Jordan as the greatest of all time but I personally have Wilt and what you said about Jordan you can apply to Wilt , it was nothing Wilt couldn't do on a court besides maybe hit free throws with regularity and on the occasion that he did he scored 100 points leading the lead in rebounds , Asist , Scoring , Minutes , Field goal percentage and I'm sure if they were counted in his day he would of lead in blocks as well I feel Jordan's domination of the guard position is only equalled by Wilt's domination of the center postion but never the less great comment on Jordan's game.

      Also as it relates to Jordan his body cordination is unparalleled but what I feel your getting at is his core strength which would explain his ability to hang in the air or finish through traffic that's a rare combination it's rare to have either actually but almost unheard of to have both along with Giant hands it's almost hysterical how much more gifted he was then his peers

    • @user2176
      @user2176 7 лет назад +3

      I won't argue with you about Wilt, he was the most dominant athlete maybe ever in any sport, 7'1 guys are not supposed to be that athletically gifted, he could run and jump like a deer, not to mention how f'n physically strong and imposing he was. The only knock on Wilt, is the fact that he was a center, it's almost unfair because it's hard to say that centers are the GOAT because they don't have the overall basketball skills as required by a guard or a small forward.
      Guards out of necessity have to become skilled at getting to the basket somehow, where as centers become skilled at ways to gain and maintain position in the post area. With Wilt and Shaq there is basically nothing you can do to keep them out of the area they want to position themselves. Their work is mostly done before the ball even gets to them. People mock Wilt's one move where he just reaches out and finger rolls the ball in almost right over the defender, they say he would never be able to do that in today's NBA, or Shaq would swat that into the 5th row. But they forget how big he was, once he had the defender on his hip that close to the basket, he could literally shoot it anyway he wanted to, the defender already lost the battle before the ball ever got to Wilt's hands.
      If you leave stats out of the conversation, and look at Wilt and Jordan only in terms of basketball athletism and technique, then it's hard to pick Wilt over Jordan, only because Jordan had to develop greater ball handling skills to survive at his size. At 6'6'' Jordan had point guard ball handling skills and quickness, with track and field level running and jumping ability. Isiah Thomas also talked about it in one interview, when he first played against Jordan on the USA team in 84, that it was how quick he was that really surprised him.
      I think you are spot on about the core strength, and Jordan's body control. I remember watching one of Magic's mid summer games, I think the 89 one, and Jordan just made everything look so easy and effortless, total control and confidence in his movement and skills. He seemed to approach basketball like Bruce Lee approached martial arts, to achieve total mastery of technique, perfection of the fundamentally necessary skills, and a dedication to surpassing any perception of physical or mental limitations.

      Solid Comment and I agree Jordan's position demanded more skills as a perimeter player I think on some level though Wilt's domination is held against him before Jordan a big man was more valued then a guard , guards were looked at as interchangeable and it's a testament to Jordan's greatness how he changed how the position was viewed and played but Wilt's Stamina which I feel is a underated quality in his game , The man literally one season played every minute of every game and averaged somewhere upwards of 44 per game for a career that's unheard of and to be a man of such stature being able to not only dominate the boards
      ( more possessions ) influence how players penetrated the paint and being probably outside of wes unseld and bill walton the best outlet passer ever someone who can command that type of attention on offense makes everyone else a threat to score due to the defense focusing on him so much imagine that in today's game with knock down 3 point shooters also on offense Wilt's game was very diverse from fade away bank shots to fingerolls to hook shots being able to finish with either hand all in all as much as I love Jordan and I can't and won't downplay any part of Michaels game I can't go against a man that duriable that dominating and that multi dimensional can't bet against the big dipper
      Wilt 1 Jordan 1A

    • @user2176
      @user2176 7 лет назад

      There other argument in Wilt's favor is the lack of footage of him when he was young and at his most dominant. Most of the footage I've seen is of older Wilt with bad knees, playing for the Lakers with Goodrich and West taking a lot of outside shots.
      The one game where its old Wilt vs. young kareem and Kareem is killing him most of the game, until Wilt gets pissed, and starts getting physical. I think he blocked 3 skyhooks, and just used his strength to get right under the basket and take over the game. It makes you wonder what a young Wilt could do, so frustrating that there is no video footage.
      Just wondering, what's your all time team? (5 players plus 1 sixth man)
      I got:
      C Wilt
      PF Russell
      SF Dr. J
      SG Jordan
      PG Magic
      6th man LBJ ( would still get starters minutes cause he can sub in for 4 positions)

That’s mainly what he does now at his age of 41 in the NBA and he also had plenty that come to mind while he was at UNC. But to each his own. I prefer Vince’s and LeBron’s over MJ’s. Even his chasedown mixes are more exciting to watch than MJ dunks. Yes, he does the dunkman a lot, but I personally think his one foot dunks are better than MJ’s one foot dunks. @@jesswilson6012 Lebron a better dunker than MJ? Not only he lacks creativity and any kind of semblance of variety in his dunks, but his resume of posters is quite possibly the poorest in history for a guy of that size, volume of baskets and athleticism. Especially if you consider he mostly plays in the era of open lanes, low level centers and no big PFs. His most famous dunk is one on old Terry, who is a midget. I can definetily think of a couple of Kevin Johnson, John Starks' dunks that are more impressive than any single Lebron dunk.
