There's a lot of instances where you can still complete a quest with a dead NPC by using this. A small side quest in Act III had me stuck because the NPC I needed to interrogate died in a fight. But lo and behold, death doesn't prevent questions from being answered in this game.
And sometimes the dead can warn you about a betrayal/ambush early so you come prepared. My general rule of thumb now is to cast the spell first thing after long rest on the first corpse I see. In most cases it does nothing except "the corpse has nothing to say" narration, but then the spell remains active until the next long rest and automatically highlights any "chatty" corpses. And that corpse just spills the beans about them being Zariel's hitmen instead. Karlach, of course, claims the same, but from the RP perspective you have no reason whatsoever to believe her at face value. This is your clear evidence should you want it.

@@Mordring No, there are clues that Anders and his gang are not the nice Tyr followers they claim to be but work for the devil Zariel. Back in late Early Access we played a co-op game as a female dwarf paladin and a tiefling warlock. When we came upon Karlach by accident (without having talked to Wyll in the Grove first) we listened to what she had to say but didn't know what to make of her story. (You can use the tadpole to see she is sincere, though.) When we came to the rollhouse where Anders and his gang were, the first thing that put us off was the sight of multiple corpses and blood lying around, with one of the gang just idly siting there polishing his weapons. We wondered, "if these are paladin, why havent they buried the dead properly?" But one of them was a trader, so my tiefling went and traded with her, while our lady paladin talked to Anders. They told us about a "devil woman" they were hunting and claimed she had allegedly slaughtered the dead. Oh and also the cellar was full of monsters, so don't go down there. Sure? The game then gave the paladin a [Religion] or [Insight] roll with the result that something about Anders didn't fit with being a follower of Tyr and that he seemed to be lying. My tiefling warlock got a Lore roll that something about the alleged slaughter didn't fit with how devils behaved, as devils prefer to use their brains not brawn. Also, something about Zariel. Both the speak with dead and speak with animals are phenomenal abilitys that make a lot of sense for information gathering. Until you think about it. With Animals its mostly that they have overheard or saw some secret of a person because people dont pay mind to animals watching them. However in a world where talking to animals is something you can do by drinking somewhat readily available potions or some failry low level magic people would be a lot more aware of animals overhearing their secrets. Same with the speak with dead. If i was a serial killer id give my damndest that my victim wont be able to say anything about because after a few victims my murderspree would be high profile enough for someone to pay a cleric or any other magician to make my victims talk. I really like the idea of using these skills to gather intel. I just think they often give a bit to much.
Honestly, the abilities probably arent as common in the lore as the games (both ttrpg and computer game) suggests. For speak with dead, i would imagine not every deity would grant that ability to every cleric in their service. Likely the deity would have to actually have "death" as part of their domain portfolio and even then their clerics may have to be of certain rank in their church to be granted the ability. As for speak with animals.. I dont think the potions are quite as common as in bg3. The ingredience might be more rare or it may be expensive to brew, especially since you hopefully wouldnt need them very often. and most people who'd have the spell would be druids likely hidden away from civilization (or at least not so casually contacted). Rangers may learn the ability if it fit into what they were hunting but might be hard to call one every time you need an animal questioned. (Also dont think people would trust a warlock to do it.. @@darcraven01 To expand on that a bit: Using gold for everything is pretty common for a D&D Campaign. But that is not something that is really a thing in-universe. So you kinda have to question yourself: How often do you have a 100 dollar bill in your hand, because that would be one gold piece. A scroll for "Speak with Dead" would probably be on the high end of the uncommon items. So that would be around 500 gold. That's 50 thousand dollars to ask somebody 5 questions, without any guarantee that you would even get anything out of it. The speak with dead on the mind flayer in the goblin camp also can happen without any of your party having the spell. If you talk your way into the camp Dror Ragzlin will be already talking to the dead mindflayer and you can ask it questions if you pass some checks with Dror. Probably already well known but I thought I would mention it since the video didn't!
You can also let Dror Ragzlin do the interrogation but use the tadpole to control what questions he asks. You can only ask three questions though, and if you try to ask "who is the Absolute?" he realises what you're doing and refuses to ask. You CAN persuade him afterwards that you're not an enemy though.
One of my favorite things about using Speak with Dead on Gortash is that you actually speak with Bane while hes busy torturing Gortash's sould, Bane says that by taking command of the Elder Brain youll be considered his Chosen, which means that The Dark Urge is capable of becoming the Chosen of Bhaal and Bane at the same time, imagine that power.
You can speak to the ogre and bugbear who were banging in the barn too, I had no idea they were part of the absolute and on search for the weapon untill they told me.

i guess for shadow heart to appear dead at the goblin camp you have to rest more than twice cause I long rested twice never talked to her, she showed up at the beach, at the grove, and then at the goblin camp she randomly shows up during the cutscene with the dead three, and just says "I'm part of the party now you need me i need you"
kind of a lore flaw on Larians part because a stake through the heart does not kill vampires or vampire spawn it only paralyzes them... Also considering mortal elves live to be 800 years old naturally in D&D and Astarion is only 200 which is still young for a mortal elf let alone a immortal one and he can't remember jack shit is kind of weird.
I dunno, using speak with dead on the bed of corpses in Yurgir's room at Gauntlet of Shar or on Auntie Ethel with her charm on are all crazier than all ten of these
Auntie Ethel! I did it on my 7th playthrough, killed her before she could leave the house through the fireplace and she actually tells you why she wanted the baby. You can then let Maryna know, so she is not mad at you for killing the hag.
no voice bug happend to me in other cases too, also while in dialogue with that hunter lady after defeating Cazador, one of Astarion's line was voiced by the actress that voiced that Hunter lady.
The Lae'zel one is kinda funny cause if you're a cleric of selune and when asking about the tears you reference selune and she denounces that claim saying that a false god claimed a rock or something along those lines yet here when she's dead she refers to them as the tears of Selune

I can't believe you didn't put gortash in your list, you can talk directly to baal. He said I do everything to make him stronger and I ll become his avatar but there isn't any quest to become his avatar. Probably it's dark urge content.
what i dont get is you're able to speak with dead on astarion even tho he is undead but the game won't let you speak with cazador because he's undead :/
Have you done the Punish the Wicked quest in the shadowlands? There is good piece there with He Who Was talking to the dead, and you can have a couple of different outcomes
How come Auntie Ethel is not included in this? If you kill her before she escapes behind the fireplace, her dialog is probably the funniest speak with the dead in the game :D

Good topic. I keep forgetting to use this and some examples to look for might help me change that, thank you.
Spoilers for act 3!
if you speak with ghortash's corpse you get a pretty interesting conversation
u mean u speak to bane
Speak with dead and speak with animals open ups like double the amount of dialogue than the game without it, so many different ways to use it
i guess for shadow heart to appear dead at the goblin camp you have to rest more than twice cause I long rested twice never talked to her, she showed up at the beach, at the grove, and then at the goblin camp she randomly shows up during the cutscene with the dead three, and just says "I'm part of the party now you need me i need you"
kind of a lore flaw on Larians part because a stake through the heart does not kill vampires or vampire spawn it only paralyzes them... Also considering mortal elves live to be 800 years old naturally in D&D and Astarion is only 200 which is still young for a mortal elf let alone a immortal one and he can't remember jack shit is kind of weird.
Probably because of how brutally Cazador tortured him.
no he was turned 200 years ago we have no idea how old he was at that point.
Nah he’s a 200 year old spawn, not 200 year old elf.
I'm a bit surprised that the corpse pile and Gortash weren't on the list, cuz those convos were wild!
It'd be funny if this worked on animals with the speak to animals spell lol.
Everyone should try talking with Gortash. I think it's bugged as of the 1st patch, but it's just text, no voice, but it's still a surprise
no voice bug happend to me in other cases too, also while in dialogue with that hunter lady after defeating Cazador, one of Astarion's line was voiced by the actress that voiced that Hunter lady.
Can you Speak with Dead with a custom character/Dark Urge? Like, let them die in battle and have another character use Speak with Dead on you?
You can't use Speak with Dead to player controlled characters
The Lae'zel one is kinda funny cause if you're a cleric of selune and when asking about the tears you reference selune and she denounces that claim saying that a false god claimed a rock or something along those lines yet here when she's dead she refers to them as the tears of Selune
I've always been a Persuade rpg player. Always had a bias for just using words to control shit since Dragon Age. So having things like Speak with Animals and Speak with Dead at all times was so fucking cool, yo.
The interaction with the Hag's speak to the dead ability could be more engaging.
Love how Shadowheart won’t tell you what dirty she worships but will gleefully tell you that her valuables are on her dead body
LoL, i did same as you did in 8, except i spoke with the victim directly. Never knew that you can find and speak to the Brilgor. But the essence is basically same from what i've seen here.
If you go to the room where Yurgir is in the Guantlet of Shar, you can cast speak with dead on the entire pile of Dark Justiciar corpses!!
if halsin dies in act 3 after... certain events
his speak with dead is the exact same, which feels like a missed opportunity
Quite buggy but add the Gorthash speak to the dead...
Oh god.
Literally
i always forget to use speak with dead in my games even though my favourite interactions come from this spell and speak with animals (which i also hardly use unless scratch has something for me)
You MISSED the very best one. In act 3, if you go to the social event that the red dwarf (with several other duplicate red dwarfs) is at as soon you enter the lower city and kill him, you can shape change, speak to dead with him, and get the password for the door for the Murder Tribunal fast and easy.
There is good piece there with He Who Was talking to the dead, and you can have a couple of different outcomes
if you use speak with dead on ethil, she will actively insult you during you conversation, and she’s more…talkative than others
you missed the best one naaber even after the spell has stopped working he keeps talking
I did it to minsc.... After I threw away over 100 hours, just to get him to join my party. Bro was genuine.
How come Auntie Ethel is not included in this? If you kill her before she escapes behind the fireplace, her dialog is probably the funniest speak with the dead in the game :D
when you talk to gortash, the god of tyranny speaks to you. HOW in gods name did that make this list.
Isobel the daughter of Ketheric Thorm. I have yet to play an evil play through yet. Too many things that i can do being evil in the game.
If you cast speak with dead on Gortash, you will be speaking with 3 God of Dead Three - Bane
Eh. You literally get to speak with the God of Tyranny if you cast it on Gortash, so I feel like this list is a bit incomplete.
Wow, those *speak with dead* voices are just creepy.
I thought Gortash would be on here or Orin's mother.
You should add Gortash
How deep can go this game?!
What happened to: "wont be enclined to talk to their killers ?.." another BG inconsistency.
I’m surprised you didn’t mention Auntie Ethel.
Yo what armor is your sorcerer wearing it looks dope
Infernal Robes... unfortunately you gotta kill Karlach to get 'em
@@BigDanGaming I will do what I must. Give me drip or give me death.
If you speak with dead Gortash Bane responds, not Gortash. That went hard af
bro ur clickin the options so damn fast lol
Speak with animals scenarios are funny too.
That dead mindflayer was a mistake in the story.. not giving any spoilers but the 2 mindflayers u find dead ur charater thinks they were the ones that insert the parasite... it werent. The devs forgot that they changed the story ;/
Lae'zel and Shadowheart. Bummer
Could you please make a video on every romanced companions' reaction to the Incubus using your body?
Had anyone tried to speak with dead one of the chosen using a polymorph spell like the helmet in the special edition?
Lazel Is chill She tryed to kill me only 2x
It doesn't make much sense that they're still controlled by the absolute after death with the tadpole no longer being a thing.
Are you able to kill animals, then talk to their corpse? I’m curious what happens when you deal with animals in wild shape forms
Speak with dead doesn't work on beasts. It does, however, work on Myconids.
Astarions dialogue hurts me so bad why would kill him
hmmmm... If you kill Astarion and then in Act 3 visit Casador and tell him how does he respond. ? I mean ....you have just prevented his ascension so he should be po'ed.
IMO speak with dead really doesn’t really offer much variety. Cool that you can do it, occasionally get some answers, but overall not very useful
I have a ring that gives me this spell on lv 3, i gotta say, best thing in the game so far
Im going to buy this game. What class are you? And do you need a certain level or class to use the ring?
@@junjunsay93 no, it’s early in act 1
there's also an amulet in act 1. In whiters chamber.
Art even tells you how to pronounce his surname and you still manage to butcher it. lol
I disagree top number 1 spot goes to Gortash which let's your character to interact with the Lord of Bane and have a conversation with him when using speak with the dead.
Cool video, but you missed some questions
