The trick is to phrase it correctly. You used to have a girlfriend that liked to go by Carter, or liked to be called Carter.
Another lie or at best a half-truth. Why not be honest? It must’ve been years ago. In other words, it’s only an issue if you continue lying about it.

I've known multiple girls named Kyle. I've never heard of a woman named Carter.
Idk why people aren’t more honest. We both went through so many baby names because of exes, people we didn’t like, someone we knew with that name who was really ugly, all kinds of shit. Ultimately I ended up inventing a new name that sounds like a normal name and everyone loves it.
My ex husband vetoed every girl name with that's a stripper name. We never agreed on a girls name. We had 2 sons.

Not that it's my business, but you probably shouldn't be marrying someone if you can't have this incredibly simple conversation with them. Literally all he needs to say is "hey I'm not comfortable naming our daughter Carter because I used to date a Carter and I don't want to talk about her anymore than that."
The details of your exes, who they were, and what your relationship with them was like doesn't need to be the business of your current partner, but you do need to give a reason for being so against a particular baby name. But just saying "it was my ex's name" should be enough for most people.

It’s certainly not an old man’s name, Carter has been a LOT more popular in the last 15 years than it ever was before. It was probably not even in the top 100 male names in 1950, back then it was all Frank John David etc
