They learned a lot from this terrible disaster. It wasn't just the KLM pilot's fault. Instruments on the runway were not up to date, there was heavy fog & some miscommunication from the tower. Just a weird combination of events that led to a horrible tragedy. It's amazing that there were any survivors at all.
The KLM captain was impatient and demanded to take off. There was no misunderstanding between the KLM captain and tower. The tower had told him to hold position. Do to a long duration of time parked on the tarmac, The KLM captain started to get anoid and did not want to wait any further. Tragic.
As a former flight attendant as a part of recurrent annual training we review transcripts from incidents to learn from them. It was very clear that Capt. Van Zant was timing out and wanted to get home and the first officer was intimidated by him because the captain was the poster boy for KLM, they did not have a clearance for takeoff, and the majority of the blame is on the Captain.
The KLM pilot wanted to get in the air so he can stay legal. He was also KLM poster boy and had a huge ego. His co pilot should shoulder part of the blame for not retracting the throttles when the captain took off. He knew that the were not cleared but was intimidated by his captain.
How did anyone come out of this alive? Even if you avoided the fire, the sheer force of impact would have caused whiplash-like injuries, only much worse.
Even though My Grandmother and Grandfather perished in the Pan Am airplane. I find some honer in the fact that the airlines learned from their mistakes and made flying much safer today. However the pain is still very real to me.
That is true, at the time that airport had no ground radar. The weather was good when both planes were re-directed to it and landed, but changed to a thick fog. As a 747 was capable of landing on that runway (it was long enough), those planes were diverted there. The Pan Am pilot offered to stay circling as he had enough fuel, but he was ordered to land by the Las Palmas controllers.
The lives lost were not in vain. In their honour (for what its worth) steps were taken to prevent such ever happening again. Condolences to their families and kin.
The KLM captain and first officer can't have been listening to the radio. They read back their ATC clearance, then seconds later heard the same controller who read them their clearance tell another plane to "report when runway clear" and getting the response "okay we'll report when we're clear". It was a single runway airport, so it is astonishing that this was not perceived as an issue by the KLM crew. Yet when the flight engineer raised it he was dismissed.
How could you possibly compensate the victims? There is no way you would be able to make up for the loss of one life let alone 583. All this due to carelessness, a "misunderstanding".
Saul Star Because it was sunny. Then the weather changed. It happens. For finality of fate imbecile Dutch pilot took off without permission in fog. Banzai! 583 dead.
Unfortunately they had multiple aircraft on the ground at the time, and because of the huge size of a 747, they had to use the runway as a taxiway as the main taxiway was crowded with other planes. There was no ground radar & the ATC staff could not see the runway, so they are not entirely at fault. The bulk of the blame lies with the KLM pilot who was in a hurry to take off and did so wihout ATC clearance, despite the Pan Am's efforts to warn both the KLM & ATC people he was still taxiing.
I just cannot fathom why a seasoned, experienced pilot would take off on fogged shrouded runway, He knew that Pan Am was behind him and confusion about the position of the Pan Am jet. The Pan Am jet shouted to the controller that they were still on the runway, but the KLM pilot said "we`re going". He should have known better because he knew it only has one runway. Over 60 children were killed on KLM, and when he tried to take off to miss Pan Am, his tail skidded & created a 3 feet deep trench.
No plane is "ordered" to land, they get cleared to land, this only means that the runway is clear and it is "ready" for a plane to land on. The pilot does not have to land, in case of an emergency the pilot can stay in the air. Controllers never force a plane to land.
I am interested in aviation and this was brought to my attention by the breaking bad tv series. This is a very moving story and I recently just returned from the Spanish island of Tenerife
Not only that. Maybe some consideration could be given so pilots and co-pilots aren't pressured to take off despite harsh conditions. Belief in the clearance or not, another could be for the KLM Captain to double check. The fog itself should have made him confirm when the flight engineer wanted to make sure.
I am very familiar with this accident as I am a survivor! I am 1 of 75 initial survivors and in a subgroup of 14 walking survivors, In addition, I am 1 of 2 photographers that Sunday afternoon. Almost 3 years ago I released a book about my experience and more titled "Never Wait for the Fire Truck" by David Yeager Alexander. My book is available on Amazon. I recently commissioned a website to help market my book which is: I recently @t My website has a link to Amazon and has most of my pictures (published without my permission in Europe). Click on Picture Gallery on top right. Alec, take a look at the black and white picture of the planes on the ground before we taxied out. We on Pan Am were parked parallel to KLM which was to our right and ahead of us. I shot this from the top of a stairway at the left front door. Note their wingtip. Unless they moved after this photo, they were not crossways in front of us. Alex, i give you permission to use that and any other photos of mine on my website to use in an updated RUclips video. I just ask that you add my website address and the book cover photo to your video. I have found that there is a lot of confusion on the part of the public about how this accident happened. That is partly why I wrote this book. Your video(s) help to clarify the truth. Thank you for your work!
This was an informative slide show with images I've never seen before. If you put the words "slide show" right in the title of your video, though, I promise you won't receive any dislikes.
The KLM should've just activated the brakes, spoilers, and reverse thrusters instead of attempting to take off at a low speed... The KLM pilots were jerks.
LightningToothless Tests showed that the plane could have been brought to a complete stop from the time the captain said "Oh, yes" before hitting the Pan Am. However, in 1977, CRM is not what it is today, and perhaps today it would be viewed as essential to not make any assumptions and promptly respond to any question mark with an immediate response.
Combination of everything ... This type of situation happens all the time at airports but of course not as severe of a near miss and of course no crash ....incidents are usually kept quiet from the public not to scare future passengers
I wonder what happen to Robina I think that was her name, she wanted to stay there because that's where she lived. so she did not took the KLM flight. She was the only passenger on the KLM plane to survive, she did not took the final leg of it.
He was not a asshole, it was just human error and poor communication on the part of ATC and the pilots during those times. Don't forget technology was not like today so many had to die for aviation to start understanding and getting it right...
Both of my best friends parents were killed in this accident and unless you call being treated poorly by both KLM and Pan Am (The airliner they were on) compensation then I would seriously disagree with that statement claiming such. Both airlines seemed to only be worried about putting the responsibility on the other and releasing themselves from any liability rather than the well being of the survivors or their relatives and loved ones. His father died from injuries in a hospital 7 days later there was no communication from the airline with the family or transportation provided for the family to the hospital. The body of his mother was never identified and remains as such to this day. While not Pan Ams fault this was the beginning of a string of accidents involving the carrier that would ultimately end its existence.
Dutch: "Ve Gaan".Pardon the poor spelling. What's that sound like to English-speakers? And prior to that "Is he not clear, the clipper?" (Pan Am planes AKA "Clippers) Oh, and The answer to the 1st question... "We're going." Look out.
I know the KLM pilot made the worst mistake but why did he have taxi-clearence anyway with fog that thick and an another 747 on a active runway at the same time?ATC could not even see the runway that is sick.I was playing with fire and they are heavily to blame as wel. Bashing a dead pilot is easy and it happened then but when the procedures where the same now it was inevetable to happen somewhere. To bad in this case was KLM and two jumbo-jets involved.
Thank you for the kind comments, Some of you may think I'm nuts. Weeks after my Grandparents were killed I was riding my bicycle down a country road. I looked over my shoulder and saw no one, so I tried to cross the street. Out of nowhere I was struck by a car going 50 mph. I felt something grab me under my arms and lift me. My friends following me saw my legs slide across the roof and trunk then I landed on my feet uninjured. You decide who pulled me out of the way. I know it was my Bappa.
I am not sure where you got your information from, but no controller in the world can order a pilot to land his plane. Never, ever heard of that one and next year, I be flying for 50yrs.
that crash could have been avoided. it was a human error under no circumstances should any planes have been taking off in such dense fog. absolutely under no circumstances should this accident have happened. sorry about your relatives.
Did you forget the main cause leading to the crash? This was a small, poorly-funded airport on an extremely foggy day. Now that would be a coincidence and then sum.
It was klm fault and also fault of tower, the tower was distracted hearing a soccer game on the radio and klm got confused and went and didnt know that pan am was still in the runway.
as long as humans interact via radio these things can happen. I wonder why THIS hasn't been automized. It would be so easy to block the thrust until ATC has cleared for takeoff. Or at least they should be able to text the pilots somehow! come on, it's 2013 and still only radio?!

The pilot form the KLM 747 was living and born in the same city where i live
izzat safwan one KLM passenger snuck out of the airport because she lived in Tenerife so she thought there was no point going to grand Canary but tragically her friends on the 747 died
OMG,we had this stupid robot talk in flight security class and hell yes it was annoying allthough that what happened is really sad and I'm sorry for the people who died:-(
I'm sorry for you...anyway thanks to all the people that perished the airlines learned from their mistakes so if the people wouldn't have died they would never have known that 's why every victim is a hero. Congratulations to every one of them.
You need to learn a lot more about planes, airport, before you make such a stupid joke. If you don't understand something, ask. There are more airport that have no ground radar then those that do. So what is the joke?
its the atc fault and the klm fault but klm took off with out perrmision so pan am had to turn but it was too late because pan am could see a boeing 747 light so 61 people survied the disater
the pilots of the klm were crazy even though klm is a very good airline actually i blame the atc and the airport as they didnt saw the use of ground radar
What, so the ATC is to blame, even though he couldn't see the planes either and didn't give clearance to the KLM plane, which took off based on a misunderstanding? Truth is, it was a string of unfortunate events that can't be blamed on any 1 party. It was very unlikely to happen, but the bad weather, overwhelmed ATCs (due to the large traffic of planes) and miscommunication gave enough room for error for things to go wrong.
+Crimson ArchAngel If you listen to the actual voice transcripts its clear the KLM captain is agitated and committed not just one, but several serious mistakes. He ignores warnings from the other crew members multiple times. Even before the takeoff roll he to spoolled up the engines and the first officer had to stop him. Korean Airlines suffered a spat of major crashes because of this same cockpit culture issue. Copilots didn't dare second guess the Captain. Many faulted the PBS documentary for the way they portrayed the KLM captain, but according the the actually voice recordings (you can find it online) its pretty much accurate. Like all major accidents there are multiple factors, but the blame falls fully with the KLM captain Van Zanten. Even after the takeoff roll the flight engineer sounded the alarm, and again was ignored. I think Van Zanten knew he didn't have clearance, he was just so agitated and assumed the Pan AM had enough time to clear the runway he was going to take off come hell or high water -- no pun intended! -- He assumed wrong. KLM tried to pin it on PAN AM for missing a turn off, but they were doing the best they could and had clearance to be on the runway. If PAN AM only saw the approaching lights one or two seconds sooner they could have made it off in time. P.S. some have blamed the fact the airport was crowded, but that had nothing to do with it. That is as simple as it gets, just one runway with no intersecting runways. Look at ORD with many intersecting runways and taxiways, much more complicated to control than a single runway no matter how many planes
God did not kill anyone intentionally. God gave man free will, and the KLM was too anxious to take off, so the KLM pilot decided on his own free will. God promised he would not intervene in our free will. Accidents like this are a result of mans technologically advanced society and their machines. Sure there are questions, like why would God let children die, but man has made his own machines, and they are not perfect. God gives special graces to people that have been in disasters, to help them.

Bottom line to me is that the KLM pilot took off BEFORE getting permission causing this horrific accident.

Not in this case so sad 😔
Mostly the KLM pilot for taking off in poor visibility, without takeoff clearance, while the Pan Am plane was still taxiing down the runway.

The KLM should've just activated the brakes, spoilers, and reverse thrusters instead of attempting to take off at a low speed... The KLM pilots were jerks.
That is clearly not possible to stop in time, it would completely destroy the Pan Am and most of the KLM.
However, if the plane slammed on the brakes, it would go slower, so the impact would be less destructive.

Was your friend a child when this happened? If so who raised him/her? Parents should fly on separate airplanes.
he was 20 at the time of the accident
Bruce Butkis Quadafi and inadequate security for the carrier, or refusal to pay for it, was last straw for Pan am!

why is there no REAL footage of this disaster? Been trying to find videos of the actual time.

So sad although that was in the 70s but yep that was the atc's falut

But it can be the captains fault too.
Not really because it was a foggy weather :(
