    Very nice pen Huw. Check with the folks who use the melamine often, but I believe you should treat it like cellulose lacquer. Lightly sand the surface with 400 or 600 every 4-5 coats and your smooth, glossy surface will appear much faster. Then run your t-cup and polish.
    Lovely pen Huw. Masterful job as usual.

      Thanks Alf. I have been told how to use it to get the best out of it now.
      Put the lacquer on piece of paper towel wipe once along the length of the blank and then leave to dry and repeat a few more times.
      Leave for 24 hours before burnishing to allow the lacquer to harden. Fully cures in about 3 weeks I've been told.

    Nice Pen! With Melamine, although it may dry quickly, it takes time to cure. Therefore, for best results, you should try waiting a few hours / overnight before using an abrasive polishing finish on top - it should work a lot better on cured melamine!

    Great looking pen Huw. Gotta love that Olive Wood. It almost seems as though the Melamine is thinned down so you can rub it on with a cloth. This can take a lot of coats to build it up.
    For things like this or the bottle stoppers I just did I like to spray the lacquer on from the spray cans you can buy. Goes on easily and 3 coats will be enough most of the time.
    I have made my own wipe on lacquer by thinning with lacquer thinner with mixed results. Even made some lacquer friction polish also with mixed results.
    But once you used the Ack's polish you achieved a wonderful finish.
    Take care
    Hwyl,
    Gary

    • @WoodenItBeNice
      @WoodenItBeNice  2 года назад

      Thanks Gary. Olivewood is so amazing it never disappoints.
      The Melamine was straight out of the tin as the manufacturer intended so I didn't thin it at all.
      The mistake I made, I have found out today, is that I didn't leave it long enough before I started to polish the pen, it may have dried but it hadn't cured. I should have left it for about 5 hours to cure from what I found today.
      Rooky mistake on my part not doing more research first, but we learn by our mistakes.
      The Acks certainly came to my rescue for sure.
      Thanks as ever my friend.
      Take care.

    That's a lovely result Huw, one of your best mate. For a while there I thought things were working out badly but the ol' T Cut galloped to the rescue; it's not bad old stuff when all said and done. I use automotive body products quite a bit on my home made instruments and restorations, the AutoGlim range is very good too. Definitely worth going to the local car parts shop for a stroll down the paintwork product aisle. Cheers Huw, very enjoyable wee vid. Now if you'll excuse me I've got a lunch to demolish.

    Another beautiful pen. I've used Melamine lacquer on coasters for its water and heat resisting properties but it's very difficult to work with just because of its rapid curing time. It's also not very good at self-leveling so it needs quite a bit of attention to polishing to get a shiny surface. For my next set of coasters I will take from your experience and build up many more layers and use a cutting/polishing compound or my buffing wheels.

    • @WoodenItBeNice
      @WoodenItBeNice  2 года назад

      Thanks Myk, I will use it more but will need to get it right so some research is on the cards.
      It burned very quickly when it went wrong so I don't know if a buffing wheel would be too aggressive, please let me know.

    Had the same issue with melamine, i think its due to the solvent system, evaporates too quickly in some areas of the blank. Also if you leave a streak by accident due to heavy application its impossible to remove, back to bare wood only option
