I thought this might be woefully out of date but actually it's a great video showing exactly what it says on the tin, the principles of turning (for pens). thanks for a great vide guys.
Nice video. The only thing I would disagree with is the one stripe of glue. With one stripe you have a good chance of tearout on thinner pens, especially at the ends. I have had no luck with CA glues on the tubes so now use only epoxy on my blanks. I coat the inside of the blank and outside of the tube, then twist the tube as I slip it through. I push it slightly out the far side and wipe the epoxy around the tip of the tube that protrudes then slip it back the other way. I have had no tearout problems at the ends of the blanks, even the thinnest ones, since starting this procedure. Should also mention that I seal the ends of the tubes with clay before inserting to keep glue out.
Hello, I am fond of making artistic things, sometimes from used materials, and currently I would like to make a fountain pen in the manual way that you do, but I find it difficult to obtain the internal components of the pen. Please where can I get it?
Hi there, great to hear you feel inspired. We have a huge selection of pen kits to buy which include all the parts you need. www.axminstertools.com/activities/woodturning/woodturning-kits/pen-pencil-kits
@majajh a 60 degree live and dead centre, this way you can turn the barrels one at a time without a mandrel which sometimes can give some variations. Doesn't really work well for slimlines or euro style pens unless you have bushings which will also slide inside the brass tube. Maybe its just a mandrel you need if your only starting. You will need to know the MT, morse taper of your headstock
On a full-sized Delta lathe, what live/dead centers would I need and be able to find to support pen making? I don't want to buy another lathe. Thanks for the nice video.
Here's a tip for ya. The one-piece pen (you assembled it onto a greenish acrylic): ratehr than installing teh nib finial onto the brass threads then pressing it into the tube, I suggest you press the clip / transmission holder in first. Then, press the brass nib finial holder in to an appropriate depth before screwing the finial on. I was a little bit zealous with one of these once and the nib finial collapsed under the pressure. Clip end first: it's the only way.

Agree
Amazing skill
After putting the adhesives in the tube, the tube is inserted into the acrylic rotating, so that the adhesive is distributed well.
this is a great video, but do you have a higher res copy to re-upload?

Hi Aaron, no we don't, we just sell the kits and teach people how to turn their own at our Skill Centre.
