Why would anyone want to rush pen-making and then brag about it, I turn pens as a hobby and enjoy the process, I'm not in a race, OK, for some it's a living, but even so, making something that is needed to sell, it is important that the quality is the best it can be,. Cost, price of the kit, time spent, how much would you sell a pen for that only took 10 minutes to make and be proud of, there is a phrase I always use, attention to detail, I'm lost for words,,. anyway, stay safe Regards Alf

I actually stated a 10 minute turn. Sorry if you misunderstood.

David, I didn't see you measuring the diameter of the tenon. How did you know how much to turn it down? Thanks for posting this video

Sorry for the slow response, I've been on vacation. I use my parting tool and it is exactly the right thickness for the tenon.

@@davidmartindaletheycallmemacgu, sorry I wasn't more specific. Actually, I was referring to the DIAMETER of the tenon rather than the WIDTH of the tenon.
I can understand how you created the "part" with your parting tool; however, I know that when I've been turning tenons, I surely needed to know the diameter of the "shaft" (AKA tenon) I was turning. I always used outside calipers.

Right at the start you said you were going to run a full length video and the when you actualy started making the pen you were on the lathe ready to start removing wood. what happened to the "full length video"

So turning doesn't include cutting the blank, drilling the blank, glueing the tube in, setting the lathe up, tool sharpening ... ok I think I get it? lol, ever thought about entering Politics ?

It actually doesn’t include buying the wood, the sand paper, drill press, lathe, mandrill, CA glue, lathe tools, crystal coat, pen parts or even the paper towels. Just the turning and assembly. Appreciate your comment.

@@davidmartindaletheycallmemacgu RUclipsrs have played around with this theme a lot, Even had some go start to finish from cutting a rough blank to a completed pen. Never saw a single turner that actually counted all the steps and the time spent in the actual process of turning a quality pen.
If you want to be candid about time spent creating a quality Pen and your skill level. Challenge a fellow turner to a contest, with concise rules, and a prize for the winner,
Been my experience that every once in awhile I get a pen where the process goes off without a hitch, But a lot of the time something goes awry. I spend more time fixing the issue than it would take to start over.
Smoke and mirrors do not paint an accurate picture, I think it's great that you turn. and have fun doing it.
      Have a beautiful day.
