In most cases, at least for the photography part, you gather over years. Billingham bags last for years, and could be a great secondhand. You should be able to squeeze at least 30 to 35 years out of them. My first Billingham was at least 10-12 years when i got it, I had it for 8 and sold it back to the previous owner, now his son has occupied it.

you gave up your back pack for this... you had a back pack the back are usually better than shoulder bags
I didn't give up the backpack. I alternate between the two.
