  • Phillip and David were honored to be invited to interview Sean Kelly of The Samples IN PERSON! This is one of their longest and strongest #favbands and were so pumped to make this a reality. So they headed to Boonton Coffee in Boonton, NJ where Sean had performed the night before to hear all about how he famously dropped out of high school (the system actually failed him) and headed out to Boulder, CO to "find a place inside the wind" and write and play music.
This is a wonderful interview filled with nuggets and stories that you might know, and some you probably never heard before (we sure didn't!). So please take a listen and enjoy!
    Bio
Best known for his tenor voice, unique guitar playing and songwriting, singer/songwriter Sean Kelly is the front man for The Samples. While attending only one year of high school, he began playing guitar and composing his own songs. After moving to Colorado in 1987 to start a band, Kelly became a fixture on local club stages as the front man for The Samples, playing original songs with a variety of rock, reggae and folk. When not touring with The Samples, he enjoys playing his songs acoustically. Kelly’s songs have been featured in various soundtracks and advertisements including "Could It Be Another Change” in the film The Perks of Being a Wallflower and in television’s Younger and in ads for MSNBC’s election coverage. With The Samples, Kelly has released twelve studio albums, several compilations, EPs and live releases.

Sean Kelly was my musical hero back in the 90s and inspired me to write a lot of songs. Imagine my shock when I ran into him in a music store in Columbus, OH on High Street. He was super approachable and I was able to give him my demo tape and he gave us backstage entry to his concert that night. What a great memory.

Great great band. The OG line up is almost all back except for Jeep. His drumming is just world class - honestly best drummer I e ever heard.
Wonderful melodies and harmonies. Very unique and powerful stuff.
    Thanks for the interview.

Thanks for the interview, gentlemen. Yesterday I found myself in a beautiful setting in nowhere, Kansas and the song "Nature" came to mind... I was glad to find it online & listen on the nature walk - had been years. The Samples was a mainstay for me and friends (I think for many) in the early 90's in college. Sean - that song is a wonderful expression of Romans 1:19-20 "For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them. Ever since the creation of the world his invisible nature, namely his eternal power and deity, has been clearly perceived in the things that have been made."

The samples are the bomb, there is no way around how simple and awsome sean and Andy's deliver of songs are. Even when the band changed many members, the core of samples music is amazing. 2days music just can't do what the samples did. They were pop, they were tired road warriors, jeep...could scare the dave Matthew's drummer with his skills, and AL, is badass lowell Mass. Style. They were more unique perhaps than phish at times...
    Just crazy orginal drive
