  • Nearly 1,700 People Live Underground In The Australian Desert, But Why? 🔷🔷🔷 Would you sleep underground in the middle of this desert? This is what nearly 1,700 people do every night. In the Australian desert-where temperatures reach almost 120°F (50°C) during the day and plummet to freezing cold levels at night-there are 1,762 people who live completely underground. But why?

I visited there in the 90s. All the houses I saw had above ground living space as well as underground. It's not too hot to live above ground most of the year and it cools down a lot at night. They also have an amazing underground hotel. The biggest problem there is frequent scares of water shortages.

I had a short solo-trip to Coober Pedy in 2014. Arrived at very early morning on 31 December after spent more than 8 hours rode on Greyhound from Adelaide. Stayed in Radeka Inn, owned by old Aystralian-French couple. It was amazing to have a chance to wander around the city and want to come there at least one more time, but honestly I can't imagine to reside there.

It doesn't mention the old mine shafts that whole cars can fall hundreds of feet into. Never to be seen again. Nor poisonous snakes nor the murders.

The owner is really wonderful and helpful. Selection of cacti is amazing... From incredibly old and impressive ones that are worth a pretty penny, to little but still beautiful and interesting ones for extremely reasonable prices. I can't emphasize enough the variety and quality that he has, all in one hoop house. If you're looking for cacti, don't waste your time someplace else! The glass and art he has around is also really interesting, and seems to be a very reasonable price.

Misleading info, the town looks completely normal above ground (very dusty though) many houses are above ground, most of the shops are above ground. Best place to eat is Tom and Mary’s, best garlic prawns around.
