This video has been rated NC17 for explicit chest and stomach hair... and general dumbassery.
Keep up the good work, Pete. Love this channel.
TheRevDr, I didn’t catch that until after I left the comment but I noticed that too. Hahahaha.
52100 is one of the best steels, for fixed blades: It sharpens easy like a carbon steel, yet it holds it's edge like a Super Stainless steel or Cruwear!! In the same time, it has similar if not better edge stability than CPM3V,not very far in terms of toughness. Ballbearing, Vanadis 4 Extra and CPM Cruwear, are my top 3 steels for fixed blades.CPM 3V comes 4th choice.
I absolutely love 52100. I don’t have a lot of experience using it from different makers but I have a few of Lon Humphreys knives in it and they are amazing. They hold a very good edge but the thing I love the most is just how easy it is to make and keep them crazy sharp. I have a knife in pretty much every current steel out there today and 52100 is just a pleasure to use and definitely a top pick of mine
52100 is by far the BEST steel for any kind of fixed blade. Either it's a hunting knife, bushcraft, survival you name it! Only steel, that I've found that has similar charabteristics, is the Vanadis 4 Extra. However, I still like the ballbearing still more!!
52100 is fantastic steel that has stood the test of time for a reason. The edge stability especially makes it super fun as you can get it insanely sharp. Great enthusiast slicer steel.
I own a custom fixed blade, made with ballbearing steel (probably 52100) The retention I get from it is insane! Same if not better than the 61 hrc M390 blade I own. Yet it sharpens easy like a carbon steel. Also it has better edge stability than any CPM3V blade I've ever seen (except Carothers) So, we have a steel, that cuts like a stainless steel with it's great carbides, holds it's edge forever, yet sharpens in seconds easy and fast and in the same time has some of the best, if not the BEST edge stability than any steel out there. How can 52100, not be the BEST steel for fixed blades? People follow marketing trends and beleive that CPM 3V is the best steel for their outdoor knife, but I would get 52100 or Vanadis 4 Extra, anytime and everytime, instead of any other steel. CPM 3V is a bit overated, not much, but it still is IMHO. 1095 is the super overated steel and the 52100 is by far, the most underated steel.
PS I test knives, since the 80's. Ballbearing steel, will always be my favorite.
I tried a 52100 knife from DLW blades and liked it so much I bought two more. Kind of a plug but Dan is a good guy and his knives are outstanding. Just thought you might like them.
@@stephenstruman7235 Best user steel for fixed blades!! Sharpens fast and easy like Carbon steels, yet holds it's edge as long as Super steels do. (None steel comes even close to that) Also, it's carbides cut like the stainless steels do and it has the BEST edge stability of any steel out there! It also as tough, as the toughest steels. In the same time, it doesn't rust fast, I polish my blades to mirror finish and I never had any signs of rust on my 52100 ballbearing steel blades. Enjoy Stephens, it's a crazy good steel!!
I'd like to see this 52100 vs. Cold Steel's Drop Forged Series 52100. Totally different blade styles, but I think it'd be interesting none the less. Make it happen captain!
Immediate thumbs up for epic intro. great work
Hey man, I really love your channel. Everytime I am curious about a steel type, no matter what kind of steel, you are always there.
Cheers friend.
That intro was wonderful, thank you Pete! Don't ever change
I have 52100 in a Para 3 and really like the steel. Decent edge holding and no problem with corrosion using EDCI. Thank you for the steel test.
Nice result on this. Thanks for grinding this out despite being tired. Hope you get some rest.
That 52100 dd *much* better than I expected. I got far fewer cuts when I had an 1100 grit edge. Will have to try a polished edge to see if I get close to your number.
Loving this series!
I thought there for a minute we were going to get some serious Pete-Teat and I got all fluttery inside, but alas, only a tease.
Appreciate your iron will dedication even when you're burned out and going on little sleep, you are a trooper dude. Never had a knife with this steel but that's pretty solid.
The only channel that I always like before it even starts
Good stuff, 52-100 is on3 of my fav using & abusing steels. Thanks for stickin it out, looking bit groggy : )
Thanks Pete. Get some kip mate and Happy Easter.
You has the best intros of all channels
So my Cold Steel 52100 boot knife might be worth a damn after all! Thanks for the review! 👍
Amazing intro mate.
do some of the unknown victorinox knives steels .
Gotta comment now before this video gets noticed. Hey buddy! Look after that shoulder. EDIT: HOLY FREAKING DUCK'S NUTS! Definitely your best intro to date Pete. In the voice of that lady on the 'Australia All Over' soundbite, "Well I Love it!" Edit 2: That was a great result from what's considered a 'standard' steel.
Brad Griffin thanks mate, there was a good greenscreen template doing the rounds that had my name all over it
The add extra elements are there to help prevent cracking, the chromium is there to help with heat treatment, making it move forgiving to high temperatures when cooling.
I'm not to familiarize with the chemistry but if you want to know why a steel for a knife..... it's all chemistry and a must know.
Jack FarmBoy sent me over. nice videos and reviews. thanks
Cool video. Interesting steel. As an aside, I'm blowing off work today, throwing on my spanking new Knife Lab t-shirt and just... well.. I dunno yet, but I'll do something I'm sure.
Yes sir, your fly was down during the stropping I had happened to notice 🤣😂🤣😋
Zipper,,,, lol. I worked night shift for years. Great videos.
Great intro bro
DTK’s Baby!!!!!!!
Your intros were always awesome but that time... that time was hilarious.
It feels like quantum leap show intro.
the knife lab is my favorite .
The part of the intro with the scene from Predator kills me every damn time
When customer makers exploit this steel. The do tons of thermo cycling. Freeze then heat. It was tested in blade magazine years ago with and without all the thermal cycling. Results were very different.
May I suggest some good old fashioned speed.. perk yah right up and knock out some tests !!
Matt Baker haven't heard anyone mention that in 16 years, used to love that shit when doing gymnastics
I just take 24 hour sudafed with red bull. Life still sucks but you know...sleep when your dead and all.
When I first saw the thumbnail I thought 17dps was a video game joke dps meaning damage per second
They intro was bonkers haha
I use braso ans silvo as compound, silvo is my favorite, split my first hair with silvo.
@Cedric & Ada and Outdoors After the Mules are done, are you still going to do that S60v (CPM440V) which I think was the first of the super particle type steels to hit the market ?
Did you clean up the rust/pitting on the V-toku? How do you recommend doing that, stropping with a polishing compound or rubbing it with a polish?
We all appreciate your hard work Pete. Thanks mate. Ps love the sexy chest hair lol
Oh that. Don’t worry about that. It’s just polishing compound on the seat of my shorts. Why? What did you think it was?
Keep 'em coming man!
Where do you buy your Spydercos? I have a hard time finding the knives I am after, especially in the sprint run steels and super steels.
Also, I know this changes the whole lay out of your tests but to save your shoulder maybe you could cut carpet instead? It's insanely abrasive so you wouldn't need to buy a lot either.
cool. when the mules are done, i'd actually be kinda interested in your thoughts on the mule design as a knife (as opposed to purely a testbed). I'm sometimes tempted to pick one up as a "user" and cord-wrap it, as it seems to be a very cost-effective way to acquire a fixed blade with a superlative steel.
Well you better hurry up and buy one before they run out for good. There are only a few steels available and Sal says the Mule Team project is over and no more steels will be coming out because sales are very slow. He said it was always a "gift to steel junkies". So when these last few are gone, that's it.
@@BornIn1500 oh sheet! thanks very much for the info, Born.
@@ciderandthorazine www.spyderco.com/?s=mule
There are 4 steels left.... RWL34 (CPM 154 equivalent), CTS B70P, Micro-Melt A11, and Micro-Melt PD#1 (Cruwear equivalent).
Your flys down mate
Cold steel drop forged hunter steel 52100 vs benchmade 119 bowie 154cm steel? They both have a somewhat similar design and look. Just different steel. The two knifes are also full tang but the only solid difference I can up with is steel. Cold is cheaper $while benchmade is more $.
What song did you use in the cutting portion?
What kind of stropping paste or compound is that
G'day Peet I have a strong arm and a companion and what something inbetween the two that I can use for food as well as camp stuff stainless because I do a fair bit of stuff on beaches U was thinking something like a masterhunter in 3v
Thanks mate
What is the background music for the ending of the video ?
Pete hirsute condition aside I’m wondering how many cuts per foot or meter you get more or less, as I’m tempted to test some questionable steel knives. I ordered some knives through Ali baba expecting cheap knives only to get Spyderco clones complete with box and very hard to tell from the real thing. Their purpose was supposed to be for sharpening practice. I did not want clones but that is what I got, Ali baba does not want pictures with reviews and this may be why. They are supposed to be s30v so it seemed a test of the cutting ability might help to see if they pass the hundred cut mark which would be to me an indicator that they aren’t a cheap stainless steel.
Hi Pete, great stuff as always. Question for you, both on Spyderco. I'm building a frankenknief, have 52100 & S30V. Corrosion resistant aside, which steel would you keep for personal use? Wanting your input. Thanks!!!
Dave Martel probably boring old s30 - will do most things better apart from a little longer on the sharpening
@@CedricAda Wrong Peter! S30V has no where near the toughness, the edge stability and the edge retention of 52100. 52100 is by far the BEST user steel, expecially for fixed blades.
52100 is the best steel for ixed blades. S30V has nothing that's better in performance, compared with 52100. 52100 has better edge retention, way way better toughness and edge stability, and in the same time it sharpens way easier and faster. It's also cheapre to get. From a user point of view 52100 is the most bomb proof and the best user friendly steel, while the s30V is just not a very bad steel. that has jsut good edge retention (much less than 52100. in my experience)
cool
How any cuts per foot or meter do u get With the sisal rope that is?
I generally try for at least 1000 per 10 meters but as I get tired sometimes my spacing changes
Jesus Christ. Need a spoiler alert for The Avengers. No one said it got so sexy.
Also "This Spyderco Mule is putting it in."
Do you plan on doing any rust testing on these steels, or is that out of the comfort zone for loaners?
Progapanda yah, probably a bit much for loaners! these get pretty rare too. dont wanna utterly trash their resale value!
@@CedricAda Understandable, have a nice day. Really appreciate your content!
Looks like the fox is tryna jump down the rabbit hole... Ur flys down bud
Your fly is open
Here's Larrin's writeup about the history of 52100 if anyone wants to know more: knifesteelnerds.com/2019/01/28/history-and-properties-of-52100-steel/
It looks like your fly is open near the end of the video.
It puts the lotion on the strop, or else it gets the Tormek again.
Are all of these edges made on the KME?
Yes
Gerald Collier yep!
What was that first knife that was $32? And where can I find it? Did he say "Kukri House"? Anybody catch that? Thanks.
Aaron cammon yeah the kukhri house do knives too!
Great vid as usual mate....doing it tough there I see....you need some Easter egg power my friend! Actually could be an intro idea for you mate.... smashing through Easter egg on slow motion...perhaps while dressed in a bunny rabbit onesie with the arse area below tail cut out.......shit did I just say that out aloud????? Ermmm gotta go!
What a FOX hiyooooo
374 cuts !!!!
More videos with less clothes. Thanks.
Hs fly was down in this one 😏
Umm peat flying low bud lol
Watch out for Avengers spoilers hell I read it. Over 3 hr flick f that
Well, at least I know to skip the first 60 seconds.
The girl guides do night shift?
You need to get the squeak out of your table, before your wife gets the wrong idea about all the time your spending in your shed.
first
Hairy chest, you are holding out on us, please show shaving sharp knives, mind the nippers tho.
L'intro est trop longue, je zap !
The intro is too long, I zap!
