This is crazy, just yesterday LTK did the results of some knives he sent out for rockwell hardness & molecular structure, whatnot & one of the knives was a military in rex45 - it had a roc. hardness of 67 ! --- the first thing that came to me was, Pete needs to do a test on this. Thankyou very much- such a gr8 channel. Cheeers from America. Thanks Pete 👍
@jcoolG19 Interesting that a Para 3 was under 65 and a Mllie was 67. Do you think that's intentional by Spyderco, or just variability? 2+ Rockwell points is significant.
@@frankrice1253 Blade geometry and edge are factors as well. It would be great to test as many steels as possible with the same blade geometry and edge. More Para 3 loaners to Pete, please!
From this day onwards the category shall forever be named EDAC! Or every day anal carry, alot of people do it with sticks.Gotta ask yourself, how good is it for EDAC?
Great video, I don't know where you come up with these intros, but it definitely sets your channel apart. I’ve been a long time lurker, but decided to become a Patreon today for the current going rate of your new favorite lube. Hopefully someone else will pitch in for some paracord. Speaking of ZT....ZDP189 would be awesome to compare to the dragonfly test.
Good test, thumbs up for you not many people would take the time and effort, to put a mirror finished edge on a knife and then dull it like you do.Good job.
Been waiting for this one, good work, Pete. Take it easy on that shoulder, dude, a torn rotator cuff from repeated action is no joke, take it from me. That ZT opener had me howling, reminded me of a recurring skit they used to have on Saturday Night Live, called Appalachian Emergency Room, ahahaha, good stuff.
Every video is the reason I subscribed.. You will end up with hundreds of thousands subscribers someday you are a riot. Great quality objective information too!
I have the Parav3 in Rex 45..I love the steel, hate the color. Thinking of doing a custom scale swap on it. Otherwise, great knife, wish I had gotten the PM2 as well, but didn't.
Pete you are the fucking man, these knife lab intros keep getting better and better, had me in tears I was laughing so hard, I think I watched the intro 3-4 times before I continues with the video haha.
Swopped the Rex45 blade into my para3 lightweight. I'd run an S110V blade in it for a month so it'll be interesting to see if theres much difference. Chears for the upload.
Enjoyable education as usual. One question, what is the name of the blade angle-determining app you use? I tried using my compass' clinometer to figure out my knife blade angle, but realized I didn't know how to use my clinometer...
i am about to buy the manix 2 version just for the blade. Then i will be acid etching it then stone washing it, and putting it in its home my already crazy manix 2. Mine started with the s110 version of the knife then i bought custom scales then i bought a s30v version because for some reason my 110v holds a edge well but has major problems suffering edge rolling while sharpening,Anyway Now i have a Flytanium inner scale a orange honey comb out scale a flytanium ball bearing cage and a lench clip, and fulling milled out liners. all hardweare is acid etched and stone washed besides screws. :)
I just purchased a Bradford Guardian 3 in CPM REX 45. I don’t trust anything that Spyderco makes because of the inconsistent heat treatment. Bradford has they’re still actually certified.
You're the first person I've seen say that about Spyderco heat treat (other than the period of time they were dialing in S30V which is now one of my favorite steels by spyderco as long as it was produced in the last 5 years in Colorado)
Your Aussie sense of humor is a bit contagious...lol. By the way...what is your day job? You seem very well informed on the science end of blade steels.
seems just about ALL knives and ALL different steels benefit from a mirror polished edge for the most part. Im sure there may be a few outliers of course. Is that the jest of your findings?
CTS-BD30P. Have you done any testing on this steel? I have a 9 year (or so) old Manix 2 with this steel. Can’t find anything as far as blade testing. Not sure there was other knives made with this. Would be interested in seeing how it stacks up in your testing. Thanks..
Should be the same as S30V, like how CTS, Crucible and Bohler all have copies of each others steels, and the individual heat treat and geometry determines the outcome. Who knows.
Good jod Pete , I've been waiting for this one , those are awesome numbers . Question ; How do you adjust that sharpener to the different stone heights ? A new stone is going to be thicker or higher than a old stone and that small difference in height will throw it off a degree or two , is there an adjustment screw or do you just hope for the best ??
all the stones are the same height and stay that way - they are diamond coated, so rather than concaving or slimming, the diamonds just eventually fall away or dull and you replace the whole thing. So they probably live a shorter life but as a tradeoff we dont have to worry about adjusting
G'day mate! Do you have a graph or spread sheet of the results of your edge tests?... I've watched heaps of your videos and really want to see all the results together!
nah, maxamet, k390, 10v and Rex121 have gone higher. And of course the Tungsten Carbide sandrin knife, but that was a bit too different at the edge for a sound comparison
Yall, look, we are wearing ol Pete out with our incessant steel snobbery. Can we all just agree that 99.9% of us will never wear an 8cr13mov blade out in our lifetime and let the poor old man rest?
First!
Big Brown Bear lol
Big Brown Bear sweet man, I was turd the other day.
Seems befitting to a Rex45 test video.
Big Brown Bear w/c is better m4 or rex 45????
I have watch ur video but michael cristy said that m4 is tougher than rex 45
Big Brown Bear hey
Excellent as usual. The big difference between K390 and Rex 45 is that I can buy a K390 knife.

Frank Rice damn!! 67! How cool is that
@jcoolG19 -- yea, its crazy hard but, I dont think that tells the whole story- I thought this steel would do 750- 800 cuts.
@jcoolG19 Interesting that a Para 3 was under 65 and a Mllie was 67. Do you think that's intentional by Spyderco, or just variability? 2+ Rockwell points is significant.

Still true
That ZT lube intro just got a legit laugh out loud out of me. Good job!
Could you do a head to head test on which knives are better for concealing in the rectum? Asking for a friend.
Any opinel will do-- they come in diffrent sizes, depending on your level of self loathing.
Frank Rice, now that is a funny one...and yes, they do make some giant, no, huge folders...lol. Oh...and I think I might love you.
Either the cold steel espada xl or the opinel no. 13 would probably suit rectal carry the best
Andrew De Souza LOL

I wonder if the local law enforcement has a file on you. That’s a lot of twisted sisele rope yah been buying lad!!
I killed my PC a while back and just have gotten back on line. I love your videos. thank you for all that you do.
I LOVE the 8 bit music and the tests are awesome!
Was on the edge of my seat for this one. Great work as always man!

Whoa. Hold it right there fella. All sharpening must be done in the knife lab!
Great stuff. My favorite sprint of 2018.
7:35 i am 4 years late, but boy am i in fucking tears
I really want to see a 12 per side test on rex 45.
I have the Parav3 in Rex 45..I love the steel, hate the color. Thinking of doing a custom scale swap on it. Otherwise, great knife, wish I had gotten the PM2 as well, but didn't.
Tim Gannon I reckon once the lightweight gets here I’ll blade swap that for a fancier steel in the FRN handle
Tim Gannon they have a lot of para3 scales for sale at blade hq
Pete you are the fucking man, these knife lab intros keep getting better and better, had me in tears I was laughing so hard, I think I watched the intro 3-4 times before I continues with the video haha.

You see why lanyards are important everyone!
Now I understand why so many guys insist on lanyard holes.
Pretty darn decent result, and it's 1of tha most stable of the steels Spyderco's used from from wut I'm hearing
All for the benefit of the knife community.
Just what I need! Into the steel lab we go.

Love the start of the vid great knife choice thank you so much
holy hell that ZT skit absolutely destroyed my sides
I LOVE this steel
Always learning, Big Thanks!
Wow, REX45 now on my wishlist!

Enjoy channel greatly, Rob from Canada, good work Dadio, Turn on the Radidio!
I love my Rex 45 military.
Really sucks this kind of steel is not stainless..
Thank you for the knife Travis !
Also, nice shirt 5:52 !
Thanks for testing it!!!!
Digging the Rolf Harris look,, lol
I smell a sprint run. An Australian glazed zt run
Does it preform better that Rex9mm?
Nope!
What is your sharpening system?
Best knife lab in Australia
seems just about ALL knives and ALL different steels benefit from a mirror polished edge for the most part.
Im sure there may be a few outliers of course.
Is that the jest of your findings?
Entertaining and informative. You rock man
Great vid. I just bought a Para 3 Lightweight in Rex 45 off the back of this video. Thanks +1 sub
Loving the music lately man lol
So you re sharpened to 34 degrees inclusive, no secondary bevel?
Everone knows Brazzers Knife Lube and Asshole Grease is the finest cutlery maintenance product available.
When you reprofile a knife with your kme do you match the bevel across the blade b4 you adjust the angle
great video, but your composition charts are off, no way it has 6% carbon in it
He had the chart set to Molar% instead of Mass%. Easy mistake to make when you swipe the chart by accident on your phone.

Pete....I think you should hire a knife assistant to split up the amount of strain on your wrists...or teach your cat how to do it at least. 🐱
This video is a fucking gold
Haha awesome intro man!
How thick is the rope that you cut
Waiting on para3 s45vn
Very enjoyable, thanx! ✊🏻🤘🏻
How is the spreadsheet called?
Have you used soul blazer music for a video yet?
I laughed so hard I peed a little.
Are you planning to do a 17 degree test on 4v?
ANTIMATTER THE DESTROYER OF WORLDS yeah i reckon ill do both of those up and redo em at that angle
King steel 🔥🔥

G'day mate!
Do you have a graph or spread sheet of the results of your edge tests?... I've watched heaps of your videos and really want to see all the results together!
Thanks mate.
hello! Yes, down in the info section theresa a rather heady spreadsheet!
Good luck selling that ZT second hand
Something tells me it will be worth more now, for a select group.
Is that the most?
nah, maxamet, k390, 10v and Rex121 have gone higher. And of course the Tungsten Carbide sandrin knife, but that was a bit too different at the edge for a sound comparison
Yeeesss
Yes , a hobby . Still it’s scientific testing
If I remember s110v was 640?
680 on a PM2, 600 grit, per the spreadsheet. If I recall correctly the PM2 is thinner behind the edge than the Para 3.
If possible, keep the beard. It suits you.
Hahah that intro
Yall, look, we are wearing ol Pete out with our incessant steel snobbery. Can we all just agree that 99.9% of us will never wear an 8cr13mov blade out in our lifetime and let the poor old man rest?
Brewhound77 think most people who actually use their knives would dull them daily. I know I would.
@@brianhilligoss i agree, i wasn't being serious
You need a longer intro.
Hope you were able to dig that ZT out of your prison wallet! Not a cheap knife!

1050 cuts
