It's great for edge retention, but it's just so damn hard to sharpen. I want to make a knife out of some super expensive hastelloy bolts I have but my first attempt failed as I couldn't get an edge on it (88.5 HRC) I literally burned through 6 belts trying to get the edge profile. If I manage to make a knife with it I would love to send you one to test out. If you would be interested in that.
I know how expensive they are, but surely a Rockstead needs to go through your lab one day? They make such a big deal about their rope cutting performance
I'm so glad I finally got a Mako Rex 121 from Creeley. Hoping to find or make a nice custom scout style sheath for it. It's just a bit big for the pocket with the one that comes with it. Great content as always! Love the new house btw.
I thought I was watching an episode of Stranger Things with that intro music.. Extremely interesting result btw... I have a hypothesis. If the carbide component of any steel composition is the element most resistant to wear then by logic it would be the last item to "dull" when cutting. This means that all of the other material is simply there to hold the carbide in place and since it is a powder metal, it is very evenly distributed. Effectively, this test was carbide vs carbide. Perhaps this is not always the case as the steel composition just does not have enough carbide to be equivalent in most knife blades, so maybe REX 121 is the minimum tungsten carbide % to be equivalent of edge retention to that of actual straight carbide.
Cavedog my thoughts exactly. From reading the Rex 121 composition list it really is a super alloy that is used to cement a bunch of carbide aggregates togethers. Think of it like those diamond abrasive tools that use aluminum as the cementing agent. It makes sense then that the carbides both give up the ghost at the same time as ultimately they are the same ting, just held together by different cements.
Regarding the wear on your arm, maybe try staying better hydrated? When I have had jobs with high repetition tasks the ache in the joints diminished by keeping well hydrated with electrolytes too. Even some guitarists with tendonitis mention this helping.
Good job. Might be a better result because more sharpening gets to the tougher more stable steel as outpost76 is finding to be the case. Go easy on your shoulder now.. do something earthly like d2 from ganzo. I know many people would love to see how that "còokie crumbles" :7 maybe even get it new and put this sharpening theory to the test.. see does the number of cuts really dramatically increase in the first few sharpenings. And I told you to save that shoulder.. lol.. sorry but this would be an amazing series and discovery to see. (Hope you do it:)
@@CedricAda yeah, I saw that. I'd like to see Christie sharpen it , then you test it on your rope, then super steel Steve do the same. Im yet to see a folder. Apparantly its very intense on the grinders and such, and a bit too finnicky to heat treat in bulk, but there are a few smaller fixed blade guys using it in smal batches. That being said, I woud expect the mad scientists and Spyderco will pick it up eventually.
Can you find a knife made in SM-100 (Titanium Nitride)? I dont think it will keep up with these but I've been interested to see the results for wear and toughness.
Boo Yah, nice one mate. Pretty cool to see how that edge performed and the title equalled. How annoying that it was a matched number of cuts 😂. Seriously you can't fake that shit.
When the lab coat went on, I knew shit was about to get REAL. Maybe it's the two glasses of rum I drank but I think I have officially gone Ultra-Nerd, because when the Rex121 went past its previous record I raised both my arms in the air like I was at a sports arena, ahahahah. Blood, sweat, and tears (verb), you give us your all, Pete, a legend in the making.
I got a 20 year old cutting board I still use that looks brand new. It's a solid 3" thick end grain maple board. Every few years I just sand it down past the surface marks and it's like brand new again. It doesn't take more than 20 mins start to finish with the right tools, oil it up, wax it up and it's good to go for more years of use. It will probably last another 20 years if I continue keeping it dry. The issue would be the glue degrading or the blocks expanding/contracting too much.
Did you see the steel testings on the Ganzo FH21 from Luv Them Knives?! If not please watch it! I hope you will test that D2 from ganzo in the near future.
Cedric & Ada Gear and Outdoors just trying to figure things out, new to all this stuff, but think that your work is outstanding and I enjoy watching all the different out comes ,so keep up the great work ..l look forward to seeing more. Thank you
Obsidian can be extremely sharp, but it's fragile and has little wear resistance. I work with it all the time, if you want a sharp edge just make a new flake, but it's only good for a few cuts. It's just impure glass, nothing magical about it.
prob won't get an answer to this, as it's an old video, but: hypothetically, you're in a survival-tactical-knife-fighting type situation... does that thin tungsten carbide blade hold up when you're slashing and stabbing away at your foe...? i mean, will it get caught on a belt and just snap the blade in half? how about when whittling wood at your camp? i'm just wondering how abusable that thin tungsten blade is... ("toughness")
What kitchen knife steel is ideal if corrosion resistance is paramount and edge retention. Almost totally unimportant.( I have no issue touching up steel every time I use it).
douglassteltenkamp LC200N is my ideal if you can find a maker. Gary Creely could possibly make you one. Its basically rust proof and maintenance free, holding an edge about as long as S35vn in my experience. Elmax or M390 would be great choices too.

What is the downside to rex121? Usually there is a trade off. Is it prone to rusting easily?
Since a high percentage isn't iron but rather rare earth elements, it's extremely expensive and hard to work with.
