The problem with the DF Retro content is that John has raised the bar so high on the scripted videos that producing that content must be a massive undertaking. The Road Rash retrospective was excellent, but clocked in at nearly 2 hours. It must've taken weeks to capture and edit that footage! The Retro Plays help fill the void between the scripted videos, but the crew needs to hire somebody who can either produce shorter form retro content or act as John's full time assistant with editing/gameplay captures/script writing.
Channels like GVMERS have a team for their documentaries.
-More DF Retro for sure with multiplat comparisons
-Remember Cinematech on G4? That shit was tight.
-Maybe Alex could do a shorter retro series going over the history of PC rendering tech and every individual gen that has released, though it might be costly to procure all the equipment to benchmark
I came here because of John after seeing him in "My Life in Gaming" and I love the channel years later! Keep up the awesome work team!
I'd love to see a series where Rich discusses game journalism and gaming in general in the 80s and 90s. Also game reviews and "what we're playing" segments. The "time capsule" videos are great as well, but I think there is a limit to the more technical stuff, as interesting as it may be, it still caters to a niche audience.

Rich is an industry vet, would be nice to hear more of his insight on things from a journalistic angle. Sort of like Jeff Gerstmann

Love your transparency and passion in this vid. I love the deep dive viddos, but gotta say this clips channel has given me some great insights too. It's pretty fun hearing *how* videos are made, the thought process behind it, the story etc. Wish you all the best!
I think this is inherently a difficult thing to grow because what you are talking about is often so technical that it poses a barrier to entry. If they don't already know what "dithering" is (for example), a new viewer is not going to have any clue what you are talking about, because it is usually mentioned here but not explained.
More technical explanation videos might be helpful for those potential viewers, where you just get into what ray tracing actually is, how it works, its history in gaming, etc.

I believe you guys have great content that is unique. And as Rich said it all comes down to the content of how unique and creative it is. And given that you guys already checked all the boxes of how to grow so I believe y’all got it right. If more hands are needed then get it going. I do think that if you divide the tasks and then categorize your content and assign it on a daily basis with some consistency that would result in constant stream of content which is hard for others to keep up with. I personally watch your confwnt on my way to or from work and that creates a routine that is convenient.
Alex may sound a little devious, but he's right, sadly? More needs to be done to convert the younger generations to a more inquisitive understanding of games, and well, everything.

I am always looking forward to DF retro. ANOTHER aspect you guys could get a guy on handhel PCS / steam decks. Like how to get the games to run, best settings per game on each pc handeheld. then maybe how they go against each other
I would like to see DF expand into real life analytics - I want to know how we are impacted by FPS in real life. At times in the city I definitely experience FPS dips and frame stutter, but I want it quantified.
Hopefully IGN provide you with the support you need to grow and experiment in the way you want, you guys are pro's and know what you're doing, keep up the great work!

I just recently got my Xbox One X and set it up. The size and compactness of that system makes the PS5 and XSX looks comically large.
Series X is a small foot print. Not sure about that comparison. Now the ps5 is obnoxiously huge. I still have the launch Project Scorpio One X edition. It’s definitely thin and clean for sure. Beautiful console.
@@ShadyDBZ4 I've got the X1X setup next to my XSX and the XSX is simply massive compared to it. PS5 is far too large though.

How about a DF Retro only channel?
I would love some console hardware benchmarking and more comparison graphs. We could see if new-release games impact thermals and fan noise. Soon, we can see testing and benchmarking across the entire stack (Series S, X, PS5 and Pro, Nintendo Switch 2, Steam Deck, ROG Ally). So, if you look at third-party games, we could have the "best version" on the "X" console(s) or, conversely, it's basically the same performance on these consoles.

I’d like to see more game review/analysis, specifically console games. That’s really the DF bread and butter imo. People want to see how new games look/perform and comparisons. DF Clips has been great 👍

An ideas for retro video comparisons:
Sega Dreamcast games that were then ported to GameCube (Sonic, Skies of Arcadia, etc.)
Find a way to have a dedicated section on the platforms themselves.
I loved John’s answer and didn’t like Rich’s comment about doing more PC content. As a console gamer I hope that doesn’t meant less console content but that’s where my mind went with the current staff they have. And I do watch a lot of the PC content since it’s kind of a peak into the future for consoles. I’m just going to be interested in more console content. Which can be interesting to see how developers get around some of the console constraints that aren’t on PC….
There’s a bit less to analyze in the console realm these days. Games are highly multiplatform and the consoles themselves use a PC-style architecture with the same hardware. Any major optimization that applies to consoles can usually apply to PC (and vice versa). Different from the days of the Cell or the Emotion Engine where consoles required bespoke solutions.
Switch is still a bit interesting since downports require unique work to not be crap.

8:38 I'm going to suggest more energy into this type of segment or a occasional piece on studios of yesteryear, what happened to them and their contributions to the gaming space and their eventual closures.
There have been so many studios that were essential to the gaming industry from the days of Sega Saturn and neo Geo until now. I would love Digital foundry to take an occasional trip back into these stories. A narrative 30 minutes to an hour look into the history of studios that are no longer with us but made some amazing contributions to the industry like Psygnosis, Silicon Knights, Neversoft, Westwood (command and conquer), Lucas Arts, Evolution Studios, Japan Studio & Team Ico, Clover Studio, Visceral Games, Neversoft, Zipper Interactive and so many others.
This would be a great segment if possible, not an all the time segment cause making these would take time but to be able to learn about the beginnings of Westwood or Silicon Knights and then their rocket successes and then the eventual shuttering of their studios by their corporate owners would be a great trip down memory lane to give these developers and teams one last applause and send them their flowers from all of us to all of them.
For my money, were I Rich or the team….i’d lean into the solid brand and reputation the channel has (with the retro/PC pillar expansion)
But
How about a new consulting unit working directly with devs? Consider like a patreon like revenue stream….and a badge a game could have to say “DF seal of approval”???
Oh, and I’m still waiting on DF Speedo’s chaps…..that’d be your main revenue stream each summer!!!

As weird as it is to say, I think Facebook might be a good platform to expand onto. I'm in countless groups there with truly technical wizards making posts and technical breakdowns and analysis. Especially in retro hardware groups.

I don't think DF had a choice, IGN bought out whoever it was that owned DF. It's not like Rich approached IGN.
Rich is the majority owner of DF, with Euro Gamer owning a minority stake (investment basically). IGN bought Euro Gamer, this by proxy they bought Euro Gamer’s stake in DF.

Short version: It's my channel (Rich) I only care about PC, and Microsoft is IGN's partner so we need to just act as a positivity outlet for Microsoft. I hope you realise if you go down this road you will become defunct like magazines due to the cloud streaming Microsoft are excessively pushing. No one is hanging around to watch you compare streamed video content or RTX 5090's that only 3% of people can afford on top of the fact NVIDIA are not really interested in selling GPU's anymore as they want to be all in on streaming too. It is time for the band to break up and go in your own directions. The obsession with chasing growth is a modern cancer in economics. Rather than going for sustainability.
