I also have 3 60GBs now, one working and 2 with YLOD problems. I have a love / hate relationship with these PS3s, any model other than these just isn’t worth it in my eyes unless you’re talking about certain exclusives, every cross platform game ran better on 360. I mainly want to fix the broken ones so I can have a more reliable console that’s fixed with brand new caps to replace the NEC Tokin caps that are known to be horrible and the main fault that causes YLOD, and do cooling mods to keep it alive. My PS3 Phat 60GB model lasted for seven years, and I've still got it. I'm planning on trying to fix it. I don't have a soldering iron, so I'm waiting for the local library to open a workshop space.
I have 3 of these models. My first one has YLODed twice, but gets to the main menu and heats up then throws the light so I’m THINKING I might be able to save it if I really go over it thoroughly myself, the other has YLODed since day one, never got it to boot past that, and the 3rd one works PERFECTLY but I refuse to use it since I’m scared of breaking it. You hit the nail on the head. I made a video regarding some preventative measures, though at the time I was not aware of the faulty NEC caps. My 2 cecha and 1 ceche are running pretty well for now though, knock on wood.
I'm currently restoring a CECHA01 I bought it for $11. The seller said in the listing "price it whatever you want" so I jumped on it. I delidded the Cell and the RSX added fresh MX4 thermal paste and new thermal pads on the other chips. And very importantly I replaced all the NEC/TOKIN caps with tantalum ones. @@a11bb70 AS far as I know, the 40Gb should run a little cooler since it does not have some of the hardware that is present in the 20GB and 60GB models.
I miss my 60gb I have had that thing fixed so many times before ultimately giving it back to Sony for a ps3 slim 😢. I was devastated to let it go but I got tired of the overheating aka ylod .
I have 2 60GB boxed machines. 1 is a USA mk1 which had the Emotion engine chip for 100% PS2 compatibility. The other (since I am in the UK) is a 60GB model without the Emotion Engine chip installed, which was emulated. I believe this is the B machine, which was the launch machine in the UK and this had about a 96% compatibility for PS2 games. Both have 4 USB's and card readers. What most people never knew is that both can play SACD discs.
That's very cool. I had known about SACD in the, but had forgotten about it, thanks for the reminder! I also believe the PAL version of the backwards compatible PS3 has a model number of CECHC. CECHB was the NTSC cheaper model PS3 with the black trim and 20GB hard drive.
@@atomiswave1971 Makes sense, yeah. A and B models only saw their way to NTSC markets while C and onward were available in all territories I believe. Very interesting history to these machines.
I like the slim model because it's more reliable & has more storage. Also it didn't overheat and it also lasted longer than the launch model. But I want to get one just to have a backup PS3.
I Just recently bought a PS3 fat. CECHh model..... I wanna keep it for nostalgia.... actually spent alot to have it restored. Any ideas how i can maintain it properly?
Try to open the console up and clean any dust you see. If you can, try and replace the old thermal paste and pads with new ones. Those are some of the best preventative maintenance things you can do.
There were actually two different 80GB models. The one that could play PS2 games off of the disc looked exactly like a regular 60GB model, except it was missing the PS2's CPU on the motherboard. As a result, it was able to play most PS2 disc games, but not all (since the PS3's CELL CPU was emulating the PS2's Emotion Engine CPU, which introduced some incompatibility). The other 80GB model had no ability to play PS2 games off of the disc, but you could still emulate any PS2 games that were available for purchase from the PS Store!
Im so happy managed to find Original Fat 60GB Pal version for 150€ + it comes whit one original controller and console is clean and no scratches on it will be awesome to play ps2 games whit it i already have Ps3 slim wich use to play ps3 games 👍🏻 after i receive this console i have two ps2 slim consoles one slim ps3, one fat ps3 and ps4 slim and i also have psp Ps Vita and two Nintendo gameboy advance sp consoles ❤️
€150 ? Considering backward compatibility was never perfect, i took a different route: Just bought a lot of consoles last weekend for that money, sold "as broken"... 2x PS3 fat, 1x PS3 Slim, 1x PS2 fat, 1x PS1,1x Wii, 5x XBox360 & 1x PS4... up to now i have 6 consoles up and running again, 1 PS3 fat is still giving me some headache and 3 360s & the Wii still need to be diagnosed/worked on.
@@anno5936 150€ not too bad price could have been even more.. These are rare consoles now and i have always wanted to own this original fat 60gb ps3 version whit backward combatibly for ps2 games, and this console is in very good condition so i didn't want to lose this oportunity because these consoles sells quickly, and its awesome to get better picture quality for ps2 games even so im not that type of a gamer who cares too much for graphics, gameplay, and storyline and feeling, wich you have when playing the game is more important. @@TheMegaForce69 😊 Glad you're enjoying it! Meanwhile i picked up a box with 6 PS2 slims... gosh, it's about time the bars open back up, this is quickly evolving into new levels of insanity 😁
If it were me, I'd keep the 60GB since those models have better PS2 gameplay since they have full PS2 hardware. The 80GB models emulate the PS2 cpu and some select games don't run properly. I'd only keep it if you plan on playing a large library of PS2 games though since the 60GB models tend to sell for a bit more compared to the 80GB. The price differential seems to be minor though.
I personally think the A01 while being a great looking and nice machine, is just too much of a risk when it comes to failure points. I’d urge to get an E01 if someone is determined on getting a bc PS3. They tend to have the cooler 226 PSU and the 19 blades fans which helped cool better. Also KEEP YOUR SYSTEM VERTICAL. The ps3 vents most heat from the back and left side, keeping it vertical lets the heat to naturally rise out of the left which can keep the ps3 running 10 degrees cooler.
Recently bought one in mint condition from this older guy not one scratch on it thing was babied lol I was thinking of jail breaking it so I can control the fan flow but who knows might just leave it alone
Take it from me after 15 years of updates the firmware is fully optimized for all generations of PS3 consoles, especially the originals. With new high grade thermal paste and a thorough cleaning of the inside it’ll run beautifully. Have 6 BC models as of right now that are running like they just came out the box.
That means one thing, PS3 60GB is restricted to PS2 and PS1 games while Later PS3 Models such as PS3 80GB and Slim is only PS3 Games. By the way, does PS3 60GB Model is capable to play PS2 and PS1 ISO Files than Disc?
@@mystyle_jm8997 The only way a 60GB PS3 can play PS1 and PS2 games is either by disc or by purchasing and downloading the PS1 and PS2 classics through the PlayStation Store.
The b/c ps3 can last just as long as any other, but there’s one exception. You can only run games that won’t push the console to it’s limits. Ps1,ps2, some NeedforSpeed Hot Pursuit, maybe a little UFC 3.... but definitely NO SKYRIM!!! And absolutely NO FIRST PERSON SHOOTERS OR ANY SPORTS!!! Other than that you’re good. Just get a regular ps3 for the others. We all have one of those already. And by the way mine is a refurbished game stop that I purchased back in 2012 and it still works but that fan is loud, i know from experience when it’s time to shut it down if the fan has been nonstop for min. Oh yeah that’s weird because I’m pretty sure mine is a 80 gig as well. Yeah it’s a 80 gig b/c ps3. So I have a one off then?

@@myairspace121 cechc03 for pal one. Cecha01 for USA. They are both out in my living room so I had a look.
@@atomiswave1971 Makes sense, yeah. A and B models only saw their way to NTSC markets while C and onward were available in all territories I believe. Very interesting history to these machines.
can you update this from firmware 4.60 to the latest update?
I like the slim model because it's more reliable & has more storage.
Also it didn't overheat and it also lasted longer than the launch model.
But I want to get one just to have a backup PS3.
I Just recently bought a PS3 fat. CECHh model..... I wanna keep it for nostalgia.... actually spent alot to have it restored. Any ideas how i can maintain it properly?
Try to open the console up and clean any dust you see. If you can, try and replace the old thermal paste and pads with new ones. Those are some of the best preventative maintenance things you can do.
@@myairspace121 great. Thanks a lot mate. Nice video. Seriously underrated channel.
@@switchstreamgaming Thanks man, I appreciate it!
My dumbass is thinking of purchasing an $800 Frankenstein PS3 from Computer Booter.
Ps3 fat E01 here! Loved it.
Thank you for watching!
If I recall correctly, the 80 GB was backwards compatible with PS2 through software emulation but then they removed it
There were actually two different 80GB models.
Finally got one of these along with the playstation 3d tv. Truly fantastic pair.
Awesome pair! I have that combo as well, and it’s a blast.
Awesome video! Cool facts and opinions for the ps3 noice
I like your videos man! Keep them up!
Thank you very much!
€150 ? Considering backward compatibility was never perfect, i took a different route:
Just bought a lot of consoles last weekend for that money, sold "as broken"...
I hope you get those broken consoles to working again mate. 👍🏻
@@TheMegaForce69 I declare the remaining PS3 officially dead now 😔
But it is a solid base for a casemod, so i'll enjoy emulation that way 😁
Happy gaming !
@@anno5936 I received console yesterday already i have had so much fun and i have only played Ratchet and clank 3 wich is one of those games wich doesen't work 100% but even whit those slowdown problems its playable and oh boy the picture quality is indeed a lot better 👍🏻
@@TheMegaForce69 😊 Glad you're enjoying it! Meanwhile i picked up a box with 6 PS2 slims... gosh, it's about time the bars open back up, this is quickly evolving into new levels of insanity 😁
I just picked up a 60gb and 80gb for cheap which one should I keep? Which one should I sell.
Proud owner of a CECHC04 and a CECHB00. For whatever reason, the C04 looks better than B00 on PS2 games.
Nice consoles! And yes, in general the emulation backwards compatible PS3s (CECHCxx and CECHExx) have sharper visuals in PS2 games.
i still have ps3 fat 80 gb plays ps2 games i bought 2 years ago it still works great today
Awesome, that's great to hear!
That logo reeks of Spider-Man. Why did they not use the 2009 logo from the start???
Still the best PlayStation ever made full backwards compatible.
The ps3 is my favorite playstation console, idc what anyone says I think it's better than the ps4 and in terms of experience.
This was on my recommend. 👍🏻
Thank you for watching!
Wow me too
Because PS3 60GB Is the only console that is capable to play PSX and PS2 Games. I wish I wanna buy one because I don't have it yet.
They're a lot of fun to own. I hope you're able to get a hold of one one day
That means one thing, PS3 60GB is restricted to PS2 and PS1 games while Later PS3 Models such as PS3 80GB and Slim is only PS3 Games.
Afaik PS1 works on any PS3, it's PS2 that only works on some models.
PS3 was the best and worst PlayStation of all time.
this was the best ps3 but this model was super prone to YLOD!
Very true!
PS3 in general is the Best Console ever.. RiP Sony Playstation these days 😔
It runs ps3, ps2 and ps1 games. However, it has heating problems.
Sony assumed right because I ran out and bought the launch model on day 1
not gonna mention the yellow light of death
I have a video that goes over this topic in detail if you'd like to watch:

Dead Rising killed mine. Maybe since it had so many enmies on screen at once.
I own also a 60gb bc ps3 till this day I baby it clean it handle it with care take good care of it . Out of my 3 consoles ps4 pro , xbone x , this is and will be my baby ps3 60gig .
I got 3 of them 60gb ps3 i love them dearly and they are all boxed i know in future they gonna be worth some wonga🍻
actually 20 and 60 gigs could run any ps2 game
Since they have full PS2 hardware on the motherboard, they can play the vast majority of the PS2 library of games, but there are still several games that will not run properly despite this hardware. Most users won't ever come across these deficiencies though.
I want to buy this so bad but I dont wanna spend $600 just for it to die on me randomly.
Totally understand how you feel. I recently bought another one on Facebook marketplace for $40, though it was a little dirty. After cleaning it up though it looks and works great. Keep your eyes peeled on those marketplaces for good deals every now and then.
600 for a ps3? Wtf
awesome vid
Thank you for watching!
The CechE01 is just as good people and bleeds out slower.
Best console playstation ever made A01
Nice 🔥
