- Sony may have flown too close to the sun with the PS3, but its fall from grace is what led to the PS4’s success.
The PlayStation 3 stumbled out of the gate back in 2006, nearly costing Sony the console war. But through hard lessons learned, paved the way for the PS4’s overwhelming success. So where did Sony go wrong with the PS3, and how exactly did it right its course?
Join Kurt Indovina for this episode of Remember When as he looks back on the PS3’s rocky launch, its infamous cell technology, and how Sony managed to climb its way back up the food chain. You forgot online was free with the ps3 good times
And playstation Home.
Yeah but the quality was super shit :/ Until the end of the generation Online console gaming was on 360.
ps plus ran out... PS3 to the rescue!! spent a few hours on the original black ops. Sadly BO2 is taken over by hackers
Brian Kelly yes a shit online service it was
Yeah if you don't enjoy a challenge and wanna play with children and trolls! The reason X Box 360s only was good was because you had to pay therefore you can serious about playing so it made the games better because they were way more challenging because people weren't just playing cause it's free! But if you're a casual gamer I do understand tho! Even tho Playstation didn't keep it free in the future!
For $599 in 2006, the PS3 was the cheapest Blu-Ray player on the market. Blu-Ray player prices were in the $1,000 range.
It actually the best quality Blu-Ray player on the market for a very long time. The cell processor that was designed with multi media in mind was the reason. It was super fast and can play all types of Blu-Ray, even 3D and it play uncompressed DTS and Dolby sound.
It was the terrible marketing of the PS3 made people think it just plays Blu-Ray's.
Yup! Sure was! Pretty much like how the PS2 was the cheapest DVD player at the time! So with the PS1 being the cheapest CD player! :D
Sometimes i think this is happening in PS5 too. Like Shortage of console
Price is not 299 it's higher
Exclusives is less
In 2006 Netflix was already growing up and was the 1st year of RUclips...Even the biggest PS3 advantage was a failure.
In the end, Sony did with the PS3 what Microsoft failed to do with the Xbox One. Regain their honor and deliver high quality games that pushed the industry forward.
Xbox one made a comeback tho
Josuke Higashikata It really didn’t.
@@DVRKSTXR it really did especially with gamepass
@@xuavy5036 Game Pass was never for the X1, it was always meant for the XSX|XSS. Microsoft used the X1 as a means to an end in order to introduce XGP/XPA/xCloud for the new generation. It didn’t help bolster the X1 at all. Whereas, right now, XGP is saving the XSX and giving it a case for consumer purchases since its launch lineup is nonexistent.
@@xuavy5036
The reason for GP's existence was that xbox players weren't (at the time) buying enough xbox games, profits were quite low, not to mention xbox has never made a profit on the console since its inception in 2001.
Nobody was buying their games, thus the idea of GP was born as plan b.
I still use my 1TB PS3, it has all my old music, video files and pictures on it (like a PC). Plus 100+ games from when the PS4 was getting big and PS3's game sale prices were insanely low. An awesome "all media" device.
@One Thou Wou Oof 😞
ONE TB??? HOW
@@sunny_sky8930 1TB internal Sata Hard Drives are about £40/$30. I took out the 20GB and popped in a TB.
the best thing about the PS3 free to play online and multi amazing exclusives
I still use my PS3 Slim literally every day. I think it's worth celebrating that Sony turned PS3 around, within its own lifetime, without demanding that anybody buy additional hardware or sign up for any odious, property-cheapening subscription models
Remember the yellow light of doom? Pepperidge farm remembers
Yellow light of who? Barely. I do remember my uncle and friends ending up with 2-3 Xbox 360’s by the end of the generation because of the Red Ring of Death though...
But the press didn't want people to know. Just talked about Xbox RRD
@Sean Taylor PS3 outsold 360 despite a crap launch and coming out a whole YEAR later than 360. It looks like you're the one who can't accept the facts.
@@alanramirogarcia2886Because the RROD was far more common.
I’ve never cared about the console war. The past 3 console generation I’ve bought both all of the consoles available.
Remember when Sony beat Microsoft into the ground this generation?
Worst beat down Ive ever seen in 35 years next to the Sega Saturn..
It's arguable that PS2 was the hardest beat-down, since it sold, like, six times the units as its next competitor. Still, PS4 *FEELS* like it delivered the hardest beat-down, probably because it was such a course-correction from the seventh gen
@@WeeWeeJumbo I seriously think the PS4 might be the greatest console ever. Hopefully the PS5 or Xbox Series X are as good as the PS4.
@@beenjammin3523 plz tell me your joking. 360 Gang. Most peole had 360s then bandwagoned to the ps4. And the Xbox one isnt even bad and I think its better the. Ps4 (go ahead and brag about your exclusives I know you want to)
WeeWeeJumbo
Yea, that’s cause original Xbox at least had worthwhile exclusives despite not selling well.
How can I forget? You guys bring it up every 5 seconds.
It's kind of amazing that even 15 years later, the merit (or lack of it depending on your position) of the Cell processor will still bring up pages of new debate when brought up. At the very least, you couldn't deny their marketing. I wonder what we would have seen in a world where when developers did end up using it well, it wasn't just making up for the weaker RSX GPU, which even a year late missed out on unified shaders, unified memory, and didn't have high bandwidth eDRAM right on the ROPs like Xenos.
Back then my deciding factor that I choosed the PS3 was because of the Xbox's "3 rings of death".
Personal I blame Bethesda for there game issues on PS3 vs it being difficult to develop on.
Hell I had similar issue with Fallout 4 on PS4.
From the comments, it looks like a lot of Xbox fans don't know what really happened in the seventh gen
Anyways, even with a rough start the PS3 outsold the 360 worldwide.
@Sean Taylor No they didn't they won, only just, but still a win.
@@ashleythomas4112 yeah ps3 still definitely outsold, but then almost half of the people who had ps3 then bought a 360 for halo 3. And then went back once reach dropped and stayed on playstation. Do I blame them? No. Playstation is fucking amazing and so is xbox. I'm really looking forward to getting both the ps5 and series x. I'm more than likely getting the xbox first, but I'm still getting the ps5 simply because the exclusives are better.
@@imprxvised8219 I think the majority of people that had both consoles definitely bought a 360 first as it came out a year earlier, was way cheaper and Halo 3 came out before any of PS3's biggest exclusives, quite early in the gen in September 2007. PS3 hadn't even been out a year then. Both consoles had their pros ands cons and it was a damn good fight. Anyway you could argue Wii won that gen as it outsold both the others.
Speaking of exclusives what do you think of Xbox possibly having Elder Scrolls, Fallout, Doom, Wolfenstein and others as exclusives next gen? They just acquired Bethesda for $7.5 billion. That could give Xbox a shot at having a better exclusive line up next gen.
PlayStation 3: The "Sega Saturn" of the 7th generation
Microsoft LOST that generation despite having a 1-year lead, a cheaper console, and inflated numbers due to the Red Ring of Death. (RROD)
Yeah they kind of focused to much on kinect instead of the main stream gamers. Move sold worse, but it didn't become a focus like kinect did.
@Ninjerown Blame racism for everything.
Hmm, how can you lose to company that counted replacing red ringed Xbox 360 consoles as a sale
The reason of Xbox loosing is Kinect and I am talking for both gen 360 and one.
I love this series! Keep em coming please!
Thank you, Sani. That means a lot to me and the team.
Bruh PS3’s price was better long term than 360.
Rechargeable controllers, free online multiplayer , built-in WiFi, region free, real world online currency, Blu-Ray player, didn’t lock half the functionality of the console behind a paywall, HDMI port out of the gate, hardware that didn’t have a high failure rate
$600 may look steep but Microsoft nickel and dimed its consumers so much that they hard you paying more than you would get out of the box on PS3 in the long term
Sjono we also had rechargeable controllers.... ever heard of rechargable batteries? Also there were no features locked by a paywall...
Friendly old piece of a popped purple balloon the Xbox 360 had rechargeable batteries SOLD SEPARATELY as well as the charging kits too. Microsoft had apps like Netflix, RUclips, Internet Explorer, Facebook etc all locked behind the Xbox Live Gold paywall until early 2014.
Sony couldn’t put rumble in at launch because they were in a lawsuit with immersion. The company that made rumble on the PlayStation controllers
Where my PlayStation (any, 1, 2, 3) squad at!! 👑👑👑
I also think it's hard to make this video when xbox 360 last updated their sales in 2014 and Ps3's sales were updated in 2017
Total sales doesn't indicate the winner of the console generation
Microsoft made way more money than Sony did
Sony infact lost a shit tone of money from the ps3 and the ramifications of that are still being felt by Sony to this day
Also PS3 only past 360 in sales extremely late in the generation makeing those later sales mostly irrelevant
Yup, 360 was still ahead the vast majority of that generation. PS3 just managed to barely pass it in overall global sales at the very end, but that didn't make up for all the money lost/not gained previously when you take everything into account, like you pointed out. A lot of people miss this part of the context of the situation.
And how did the RROD affect Xbox Sale numbers? And how much money did Xbox lose replacing all those defective Xbox’s? 2 billion dollars?
The 360 was released first which is the only reason they were leading sales. Sony eventually overtook them probably due to better exclusive games.
PS3 60GB cost $840 to make .
It cost Sony $850 to manufacture the 1st gen Ps3...
PS3 did lose the 7th generation, they only outsold the Xbox 360 by a couple of mill units because they were on sale for over 2 years longer 😂.
Microsoft stopped counting systems sold around 2015 while Sony stopped in 2017.
When the Xbox One and PS4 actually went on retail, the Xbox 360 had 19m more units sold than the PlayStation 3 😂.
Remember when PlayStation always won
I bet not many of you remember that the PS1 was actually going to be a Nintendo CD system (Project Reality) , but Nintendo being Nintendo, fudged up the negotiations and the PS1 was born, which proceeded to kick Nintendo's ass... (Nintendo later released what was going to be Project Reality as the Nintendo 64)
No? Because in my country the PS3 always did well, ever since the PS1 Sony pretty much dominated in my region.
But that does not explain why devs choose to create on their exclusive games for the PS3.
Wouldn't you want games released on the console that sold the most?
I thought that Sony's response to the PSN hack and the creation of PlayStation Plus and Sony giving away a bunch of free games helped.
Your forgetting the ps2 was still outselling both
360 also lost momentum because they focused on Kinect.
The one thing that ps3 had over 360 was a Blu-ray player
Sony: Price is $599
Customer: Aight, imma head out...
I also didn't buy a PS3 until the slim PS3 came out. Around then, the price of the console was just right and there was enough games for me to warrant buying the PS3.
With the PS4, I bought it about a year after it launched.
I hope that with the PS5, they launch it with a more consumer-friendly MSRP and has lots of exclusives and multi-platform games at or close to launch.
PS5 is looking to be the most expensive PlayStation system yet. I doubt it will be "a more consumer-friendly MSRP." It was probably be around the PS3 launch price, if not a tad higher. They have said in interviews they focusing on "value" over "price" -- whatever that means, lol. Them saying they're not focused on "price" makes it sound like the price is going to be high, but they're going to try to convince you it's so good that it's still worth the "value."
You do realize that the Xbox360 also used PPC and the Xenon never achieved it's theoretical capabilities?
It did
Great Video Series 👍🏼
I’ve thought about 12:06 everytime I watch that conference. 😂
The PS4 had a rocky launch too but it turned out to be the best selling console of the generation. However, it looks like the PS5 will have a decent launch with Spider Man Miles Morales and a great first year with Horizon Forbidden West, Ratchet and Clank Rift Apart, and Sackboy. I mean hell, the PS5 is coming with Astros Playroom built in and it looks like a pretty solid platformer. So I'm thinking Sony had a two strikes and a home run situation.
It didn't have a rockly launch at all.
To this day I don’t understand how the 360 is deemed better than than the ps3 as a broke child free online was key to my entertainment and the 360 cab wqs so ugly
I remember when no one cared about “console wars” and just played games.
Wut. It's always been like this. I guess you weren't around for Nintendo vs Sega?
Xbox 360>PS3 Xbox One
Have Microsoft ever won a console war? No, seriously. Xbox was more powerful than ps2 but ps2 still won. Had better exclusives, better games. Currently Microsoft have a huge following and fan loyalty for one reason…..the head start they had on the HD era with the 360 being out a year before the ps3 and Sony having to play catch up. By the end of that gen Sony still over took like the tortoise in the tortoise and the Hare story. PS4 dominated Xbox one last gen even with the mighty Xbox one x(which I own by the way along side my PS4 pro) Sony dominates the market with its AAA titles and always will. Microsoft can make more powerful consoles but that has never won them console wars, they haven’t even won battles within the console wars. For every Halo there is an Uncharted, GOW, HZD and Ghost of Tsushima. AAA games released in quick succession whilst Microsoft may drop one AAA exclusive every once in a blue moon, milking franchises and riding of their previous success.
Xbox lineup for the future games looks great tho.
I hope xbox delivers this time
No xbox had never "won" a console generation, nor has xbox ever made any profit on their consoles since its inception in 2001.
Furthermore during the 8th gen, xbox gamers were not buying enough games, thus the creation of Gamepass as a plan b due to low sales.
If xbox was not connected Microsoft it would for sure have disappeared by the middle of the xbone gen.
You said that the PlayStation 4 announcement didn't talk about new tech very much. But I think you forgot about Gaikai. Sony talked about it quite a lot when they revealed the PlayStation 4. It was this streaming video company they bought so that they could basically stream games to the PlayStation 4 many years before Google Stadia existed.
But they.... They did lose the console war
Not really lmao. The console war is no more but Sony ended up winning in the final sector of the war so..
Ps2 beat the orginal Xbox, Ps3 overtook 360 by the end of the generation, Ps4 beat Xbone at the start of the generation itself.
A lot of Xbox fans stopped paying attention to the seventh generation's war after about 2008ish, and so they missed out on the reality of what happened.
Microsoft started pushing the Kinect stuff mid generation and Sony invested heavily on exclusives. From Sony we got The Last of Us and from Microsoft we got Star Wars Kinect. Yeah.
sony save the PS3 at 2008
lol "almost". The 360 dominated that gen. Everyone had a Wii too, but that doesn't count in terms of console war.
I know half my school had 360s and like 3 people had ps3s
Better check the numbers again because PS3 outsold 360 even after launching a year later.
By the end of the generation, around 2010-2011 I know a lot of my friends either bought PS3’s after their 360’s, or their 360’s died because of RROD and they switched to PS3 because of games like Uncharted and The Last of Us.
@@chrislaine5257 numbers is numbers maybe in Japan because I rarely knew people who had ps3s
Lol 360 dominated, no it didn't. Wii dominated everything the first half of that gen (of course it counts, it sold the most units last gen). The second half of last gen PS3 was outselling 360 every year. 360 launched first (by a whole year) and finished last in sales.
Loved the ps3. Had 2 xb360's RROD on me. Will never trust M$ hardware again.
Bakeeeeelarrr cameooo! 👍👍🤟
Let me summary the video for you:
Sony's PS3 had a lot of problem, but sony learnt from its mistakes and finally with making up those mistakes and having great exclusives was able to outsell Xbox 360, but still lost to nintendo's Wii.
The questions the media ask to get quotes....🤔
“PS3’s disastrous launch”
Xbox 360 sold 1.5 million in 2005 while being cheaper, being in more territories worldwide by the end of that year and having less competition
PlayStation 3 sold 1.84 million in 2006 while being more expensive, only being available in Japan and North America by the end of that year, releasing alongside another new console and having more competition
X360 had a worse launch yet people rarely bring up this fact
they had less xbox 360 units because alot of them were defective between August and October of 2005. they had thousands of dead 360's all piled up in the factory. That's why it was hard to get a 360, The RROD was a thing before the Launch day. hell some people who had brought new 360's had the RROD on launch day. Sony just didn't mfg. enough consoles for the the demand but sold more in the 2 countries.
what war? These are Gaming consoles to entertain people not to put Labels in people's mind.
PS3 is a perfect proof that you can make a comeback after a rocky start and win, something Microsoft failed to to achieve with Xbox One and fanboys keeps defending them. Just admit it guys.
Sony's position with PS3 was a lot worse than Microsoft this gen and they managed to do it.
Just you wait.
They came back but they lost almost half of their ps2 customers , so keep that in mind
Everyone might say the ps3 is better, but we all know that the ps3/360 gen the Xbox had better exclusives, better controllers and a cheaper console overall more user friendly (except the red ring of death)

People forget while the online services were free sony got hacked way too many times (for long periods too). I've always felt the 360 had the upper hand just because they had better social features and online services.
Thats how psvita failed with its expensive exclusive sd cards
You know who lost the console war? Sega, Panasonic and Atari to name three. Otherwise, we would still be playing on their consoles. The simple fact that gamers are still playing on the current gen consoles means that none of these have ever lost a console war.
haha how the hell was that light on the unplugged ps4
Is the 60GB version considered the worst in terms of quality compared to 40GB, 80, or slim in general
I heard that someone say 60GB yellow pigment due to a manufacturing defect in the device. Give me your opinion and I hope that you will only come to me 60GB angel
It did win
😂🤣
Absolutely love my PS3 slim but this is pure copium. Someone making the last shot of a basketball that’s already over doesn’t mean you “won” & Xbox 360 being the lead platform for every 3rd party from day one until the end is the objective evidence to that.
PS3 only outsold 360 well after the next generation started while still receiving short end of the stick on the last cross gen games.
Sony handhelds are my jam but anyone who claims any industry wins for that generation is as patently false is at gets.
Tech nerds aren’t everywhere so I get it. The false narrative of PS3 technical prowess somehow clung to the zeitgeist throughout even tho on all fronts aside Blu-Ray 360 had a near generational advantage over PS3 specs.
No unified shaders, split memory pool, inadequate SDKs, a GPU outdated/underpowered by 2005 standards & combined with a complex slow amalgamation of vector processing a top regular CPU work at center.
PS3 is/was an incredible system with a lot to offer, exclusive titles made it SIIIIING. IMO artist aptitude brought those to be equal with technically superior showcases for 360.
TLoU/Killzone 2 are as striking as Halo 4/Gears 3 without using techniques that would become next gen standard. Lotta if it comes to the difference in games made between those two & Sony having the objective of salvaging the false narrative of spec superiority.
Which obviously succeeded, unfortunately resulting in lower resolution, fps & visual targets that were “okay” 2009-2012.
TBH it was TLoU that did it, it did it for me & still love the PS3 purchased for it.
Yeah, almost. Got to give credit to MS for their persistence. One of these decades they are going to sell more consoles.

Ps3 outsold 360 and had better games with uncharted trilogy, the last of us and God of war 3
The Volcanic Masochist The Volcanic Masochist Okay, so I was a major Sony fan in the Ps1 and Ps2 eras. I’m sorry but the PS3 sorely lagged behind with quality exclusives.
Mass Effect 1, Halos 1CE and 3 and 4 + Reach/ODST/Halo Wars, Gears 1-3, Lost Odyssey, Forza Horizon, Fable Anniversary and Fable II, Saints Row, Witcher 2, and many others helped differentiate the Xbox that generation.
Not to mention Sony more or less killed Ratchet and Clank and Gran Turismo (two of my fav IP’s from them). Uncharted is good as is Last of Us but they are more interactive movies than games (it’s universal that the gameplay for those games are *serviceable*)

Yet nobody brings up how Microsoft nickel and dimed Xbox 360 users with the externally HD DVD drive, wifi adapter, Xbox gold subscription, batteries and charging kits and hard drives. Oh and the red ring of death.
Almost no one bought that separate HD DVD drive -- which is why they gave up on it pretty quick and Bluray won the format war that was briefly going on at the time, lol. It wasn't a requirement for gaming on the 360 at all, thankfully.
Deathbrewer Microsoft should’ve included a built in HD DVD drive for the 360 because a lot of games released later that gen were on multiple dvds.
It won in the end since the Wii was joke PS3 sold 105 million in the end out selling Wii and PS1.
But the online really sucked
So Xbox 360 is still considered the loser even though they dominated the majority of that console generation. Whatever you say revisionist history.
Well, yeah. It's all about the whole gen and where you end. If a sports team leads a league table for a long time but ends up finishing third, that's where the history books record them as finishing. A console gen is pretty similar, it's a marathon not a sprint. As 360 finished last in total sales, they technically lost, simple. Also 360 never dominated any part of that gen. Wii dominated everything for the first half, PS3 and 360 sales were very close for the second half as Wii's sales declined from 2010 onwards.
Where I can get “The end “ t shirt?
It did
their is no console war 🤔... except for sonic vs mario
no i dont remember sony ever almost losing... they always had this shit in the bag.. people wanna talk about ps3 hardware yet i have to this day known anyone that had the yellow light of death... but on the other hand... damn near EVERYONE had lost a 360 due to the red ring of death... blu ray discs went far whereas the typical compact disc for the 360 reminded me of the ps2 days(one second in the wrong hands and BOOM disc was scratched up).... so no... i dont remember sony ever almost losing anything...
360 used DVDs, not Compact Discs (CDs) but yea. Also I'm lucky enough to still have a launch 360 that still works (knock on wood that I don't jinx it by saying that now, lol.)
Almost 💀
Except even with PS3 worldwide appeal which 360 didn't have their is no clear indication PS3 ever outsold 360. MS stopped updating 360 sales numbers in 2014 when it was ahead of PS3 while Sony continued updating till 2017 so it's last sales numbers are NOT aligned.
I'm pretty sure if Microsoft had sales information indicating that 360 did have more lifetime sales than PS3 they would've made that public.

Xbox 360 was already out for awhile so for a moment it was #1
Not just "for a moment" -- it was #1 for the vast majority of that generation. PS3 only managed to barely pass it in overall global sales near the very end.
Justin Fencsak 360 still ended #1 in the U.S and U.K and was ahead of PS3 worldwide in 2014 when MS stopped reporting sales so it might have still outsold PS3 in the end.
@@DeathBringer769 Nope, Wii was undoubtedly number 1 for the whole first half of last gen (well from 2006-2009). For the second half PS3 and 360 were very close and PS3 ended up outselling 360. 360 was never a clear number 1.
I actually think the consuls are meant for different types of players. PS for single player, Xbox for multiplayer, and Nintendo for kids and nostalgia of a simpler time.

Outside of Halo 3 and party chat the PS3 was a much better system. The online was not only free but most games also had dedicated servers which the 360 didn’t have for their exclusives. I also loved how I can just upgrade the hard drive using any drive I had around.
