    Stan Sekai and the TMNT Creators Eastman & Laird were longtime friends who looked out for each other during the Indie-comics scene of the '80s, and remain good friends to this day which is why they're able to sometimes do crossovers with their characters.

    In addition to making appearances in the 2002 and 2012 TMNT cartoons, Usagi has his own cartoon on Netflix that is VERY LOOSELY based on the original comic. And this year the TMNT and Usagi had another crossover in a miniseries comic by Stan Sakai himself.
    So, point being, he gets some love. Just not enough.

    • @SorcererLance
      @SorcererLance 11 месяцев назад +7

      isn't that Usagi cartoon intended as a next-generation sort of thing, where it isn't Miyamoto Usagi but his son or future descendant? Mostly to have a less-violent, kid-friendly, stand-alone series that doesn't rely on his father/ancestor's story to follow up.

    • @finalunusedname
      @finalunusedname 11 месяцев назад +3

      @@SorcererLance Yes on most of those things. But at least in the first season, Miyamoto's legacy is an important plot element. He also appears a few times. And New-sagi tells anyone who'll listen that he's Miyamoto's descendant.

      @Oof 11 месяцев назад +2

      @SorcererLance I confess, my original understanding was it's a reinterpretation of Usagi for a younger audience in a new, future setting. That's what I meant by the series being very loosely based on the comic. Given that it was for a younger audience, I haven't watched it. So I'll assume you're right. That said, it's still Usagi Yojimbo media, so again, it's something

    It's kinda strange that Usagi Yojimbo had a game before the TMNT ever did. The NES and arcade games of TMNT came out in 1989. Usagi had a game in 1988 on the 8-bit european home computers (Amstrad CPC, Commodore 64, ZX Spectrum) called Samurai Warrior - The Battles of Usagi Yojimbo. It's actually got more depth than you might expect an action game of the time to have. Like how you can fight or you can be polite and show respect. :)

      @@Boogie_the_cat My memory might be a bit rusty but i think it was just the UK that was against 'ninja' in the TMNT name and that didn't kick in until the turtles got localized here so there's a good chance Samurai Warrior got in just before we started getting weird about about the word 'ninja's'. Also wouldn't be at all surprised if the people in charge had any idea what a Samurai was in the late 80's...or even now.

    • @carn9507
      @carn9507 11 месяцев назад +4

      @@Haysey_Draws Yeah, the Turtles didn't really hit the UK til 1990 and the word Ninja had been associated with 'video nasties' including nunchucks (in 1988 another 14 mostly ninja-related weapons would be banned too) which is why all Mikey's fight scenes would get cut (Panthro of the ThunderCats had many of his scenes cut too) and Mikey would gradually favour the grappling hook in later seasons of the cartoon. Bruce Lee's Enter the Dragon (as well as a TON of Ninja-themed movies) had made nunchucks pretty popular and supposedly adults and kids alike were injuring themselves swinging them about. Strangely enough though the Turtles movies got to keep 'Ninja' in the name (since an age rating could be applied to cinema unlike a TV show), nunchuck scenes were still cut. Including in Secret of the Ooze where Mikey uses...sausages...as nunchucks... Because lots of injuries and fatalities caused by swinging sausages? The silly censorship was lifted in 1999 and that's why the 2003 incarnation of the Ninja Turtles kept the name and the nunchucks. Nunchucks were also banned in some US states but allowed to be shown on TV. Some of those bans have since been lifted (such as New York in 2018).
      Samurai never had the same notoriety or popularity as ninjas did in 70s and 80s media so never faced the same censorship.

    • @beesforbreakfast
      @beesforbreakfast 11 месяцев назад +1

      It’s also worth bearing in mind that home computer games were a much more niche market in the ‘80s, at least in the UK; a Saturday morning cartoon and toy line, precision engineered for the juvenile hypothalamus, was a much bigger concern for the pearl-clutching legislators. It’s absurd to us mighty spacemen of the future, but the broad cultural impression of home computers was something akin to a glorified electric typewriter.
      I vaguely remember the Amstrad game, which was utterly incomprehensible to my unwrinkled baby brain. I VIVIDLY remember getting in trouble for jamming an embroidered Turtles patch into the floppy drive of our CPC6128

    The little turtle guy in the background on a gold turtle robot is Kerma. He showed up a few times in the 87 cartoon, and is an alien from the planet Shell-Ri-La. He's pretty obscure honestly, so I'm not surprised Matt didn't remember him. The turtles helped him defend his planet a few times, which was always under attack because they could produce unending amounts of gold or gold was just the most abundant element on his planet. It was something like that, I haven't watched these episodes in 30+ years so I'm fuzzy on some of the details. Anyway, he then built four large turtle robots to protect Shell-Ri-La out of gold and modeled them after the turtles. It didn't work because he failed to account for how soft gold is, so the robots were destroyed pretty easily. He later just learned how to defend himself when he realized that he couldn't expect the Ninja Turtles to be on call to defend his planet at a moments notice, and then taught the rest of his people how to defend themselves as well. At least I think that's how it went down. Again, 30+ years since I've watched this so there could be a few mistakes in this comment. If so, my bad.

    So Usagi Yojimbo literally means Rabbit Bodyguard, but I find it funny how everyone including I think characters from his stories just calls him Usagi, that's like if everyone IRL just called me "black man"

      Well, his name is Miyamoto Usagi, so calling him Usagi is using his name.

    Glad to see you cover this. I'm not interested in survival mode, but Usagi looks super OP compared to any other playable character. $8 isn't a lot in the grand scheme of things but it is a lot for 1 character I want, 1 I don't care about, and a game mode I don't really want to play.

    In Japanese, u is a flat sound, like the u in 'flute, not a curved u sound sound like vacuum... So it's pronounced OOsagi, not YOOsagi.
    うさぎ is the Japanese word for rabbit.

    Matt, are you using a new file? You haven't upgraded your characters to Level10 so you're missing special moves, extra stock & health points.

      Yes, this was a new file. Everyone's pretty leveled up on my PS5 version. But I was given early access to the DLC, but only on the steam version.

    Lol the editor not holding back 😆
    You were distracted by Cudley the Cowlick, and Kerma riding one of his gold turtle robots.
    Seth Rogen is a terrible actor and voice actor. Not really a fan of lazy actors that have somehow made a career out of just playing themselves...

    Hi Matt. I like to hear your objective opinion of Survival Mode's Final Boss which I think needs to be nerfed. From the various playthroughs I've done it's almost down to luck to beat him. I can consistently reach him in the final dimension but fighting him feels unfair. He's too fast to react properly. I feel there's no way to beat him without purposely injuring yourself.

    • @maestroquebrado2259
      @maestroquebrado2259 11 месяцев назад

      The only way i was able to beat him was using the little attack you get after the double jump while he was doing that blue attack where he summons the bosses. It's basically chip damage, so it takes a while, but it works.

    • @MANLYAnimeHERO
      @MANLYAnimeHERO 11 месяцев назад +3

      @@maestroquebrado2259 I managed to beat him 5 times but each time was way too close. I've been trying to save up specials but they either miss or don't connect. I've been resorting to antiair+air dive combo whenever I can. More so when he's summoning bosses. I really feel he should be slowed down or have a distinct vulnerable point. When he summons bosses sometimes he manifests 3 and other times he does 4. It's always so sudden when he goes into that orb shield.

    Dimension Shellshock was truly a worthy DLC Expansion pack and made a great game even better. Also, Usagi is a beast! Easily my 2nd favorite character behind Michaelangelo in the game. 🍕🐢🗡🐇🦯🐀🎤👩🏒💀⛓️🥷
