I really enjoy Terfel singing this aria. Yes, maybe he doesn't have the best voice for it, but he manages to sound devious, dangerous and fascinating at the same time - just like I imagine Mephistofoles to be! Despite being physically extremely different, he reminds me of Gustav Gründgens as Mephisto in the recording of THE classic stage production of Goethe's Faust. For me, Gründgens has always been the performer that all other Mephistos had to live up to - and Terfel does, and how!
Because it makes you look intelligent.... A friend sent me the score, and the whistling isn't actually written, but everybody does it, and Terfel seems to do it better better than the others
All you commentators are so smart, and discuss his voice positioning, acting and stuff ... having no clue about the thing what so ever and being unable to do something worthy yourselves! Oh, no, sorry ... I forgot ... u know how to comment stuff on youtube, sitting in front of your 26" monitors, stuffing your backsides with cola and hamburgers and trying to look cool by writing bad things about people, who are a hundred heads higher than you! Oh, yes ... Bryn Terfel is brilliant!
@songsofscarlet Pathetic what? I didn't like the way he put his voice, which was excessively screechy, although I appreciate the fact he tries to play his characters, not only sing them. This version is slower than the "Bad Boys" CD version. I would prefer the CD version, since he there concentrates only on singing. I would still pay big bucks for any of his shows, though.
Lot's of fun. I must say I have not heard this before. Is the whistling written in the original? But I just never get why so many people see the need to put down somebody's opinion when it comes to opera.
Well, this aria proves that he is not a bas-baritone, but a pure baritone. I hope he`ll nevere decide to sing this onstage, but if he is going to sing those arias on the concerts, it`s ok. Well, I don`t like his style of singing and I don`t agree with his technique, but I like him for his work on particular character; he is very very good actor and he knows, how to entertain the audience in a style.
He is a bass-baritone, just not a _bass_, ,of the timbre usually cást in Boito's classic. His whistling is fantastic! No wonder his border collies reacted!! :)
Einer der besten in seinem repertoire 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏 braaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaava
Thank you so much for posting this. What a terrific performance. Almost scary.
