- Bryn Terfel performing "Wie oft in Meeres tiefsten Schlund" from Richard Wagner's opera The Flying Dutchman during the final of the 1989 Cardiff Singer Of The World competition.
The phenomenal showdown with contemporary Dmitri Hvorostovsky during the Main Prize final soon became known as the 'Battle of the Baritones' and, until this day, marks one of the highlights of the competition's history.
The Welsh bass-baritone won the newly introduced Lieder Prize that year. Initially associated with Mozart (Figaro, Leporello and Don Giovanni in particular), he has since moved on to heavier roles as found in Puccini's and Wagner's catalogues.

Epic! There is no other way to describe the young Sir Bryn's performance of this iconic aria. Bravissimo!!!!
He’s fantastic here.
OMG what was that? Imense, gigantic rendition, amazing!😮❤
Bravo.... Amazing👏👏👏👏
Wow… Bravo
The eye bulging histrionics let him down but vocally good
Great as he was Bryn could not beat out DMITRI HVOROSTOVSKY whose rich, velvety baritone voice simply surpassed anything Mr. Terfel was able to do and the audience sensed that every step of the way rising to its feet in bravos and singing in Russian once Dmitri had finished his set. It was a night to remember. However, both baritones went on to phenomenal careers, Dmitri's cut short at age 55 from the brain tumor.
😅
No!!! Bryn was too young to do justice to this aria. Some pieces require years of singing other songs/arias before attempting to sing it.
Looks like a big kid back then! But his voice is still fresh and powerful today. I heard him at Carnegie Hall about a month ago.
Completely disagree ! There are no rules on age so please let’s not start inventing them - especially as armchair critics
@@dugiecameron1610 There are no rules on age, but the centuries have taught us that young operatic singers need to be cautious. Bryn is 23 here. It's VERY rare for a singer to sing the heaviest of the Wagnerian repertoire before 30. And potentially dangerous.
Bryan hat den Holländer mit Bravour gesungen. Auch vor kurzem! Einer der besten Holländer Baritons!
