Astonishingly, she didn't actually win the Cardiff Singer of the World competition in 2001 - she came second to the tenor Marius Brenciu. But she had been seen and heard - and now she is one of the greatest singers of our age. She is just WONDERFUL. I'm sure that Marius Brenciu was very good - but has anyone herad of him since?? Shows how easy it is to get those things wrong!!
La Garanca is one of the best Mozart interpreters of the 21st century. Barbara Bonney was the beautiful woman speaking in the beginning. In 2003, Miss Bonney played Servillia to Miss Garanca's Annio in a Salzburg presentation of "La Clemenza do Tito".

She has the opposite problem of most singers in competitions... She doesn't move her hands enough! Or indeed, anything. Butu wow, what a voice, and what musicianship!

I love singers who keep their arms still when performing in concert.
You should watch Baroque specialist, Delphine Galou. She often moves her entire body. Marvelous contralto!

Second place can hardly be described as "lost the competition". She did not win 1st place, that's true.
Beautiful voice, no facial expression. She could be singing about any subject. Disappointing.
It's all in the singing.
Guess what? She has no tension like so many who are "expressive!"
