    the reason they say you cant pulley swap them is because the pump in the trans will burn up, killing the trans for good. Good test though, I didnt think it would go THAT fast. Pretty cool!

      I think I have this solved, I mount an auxiliary radiator fan 80w next to the transaxle ( wherever it fits), wire with a switch and in-line 10 amp fuse.
      My temp gun says about a 20°F less after a log skid with fan on vs. fan off. I also run it while I am hauling trailers.
      No pulley swap though, I think I am working it harder on the low end.

  • @cjack121
    @cjack121 5 месяцев назад +3

    I had a customer who replaced a damaged hydro pulley with a smaller one he had laying around. After about a month of cutting his two acre yard, the transmission seized up. Upon disassembly it was found most of the fluid had “boiled” off and what was left smelled like burned gear oil, also signs of extreme heat.

  • @nickpellegrin
    @nickpellegrin 10 месяцев назад +4

    Pretty good,quick build.
    I always forget the lever that releases the hydro too 😂.
    Most hydros whe water is deep enough for the fan to contact water....the fan blades act like a propeller slowing it down and making slipage easier.
    I trimmed the blades down on my old husqvarna,it helped but still slipped when water got over the fan.

    I’ve put some amount of thought into pulley swapping a hydro. The limiting factor to speed on a hydro is the maximum flow of oil in the transmission, which may or may not be achieved above the stock pulley setup. If you pulley swap it too high, you are achieving maximum flow at a lower engine rpm- giving full speed at lower engine power, causing it to bog. Give it more throttle in that situation and you don’t gain any speed, and only make more heat because the trans is trying to pump more fluid that it can use. If you can find the max speed that the hydro will do and tune your pulley swap to make that max speed at your engines peak power making RPM (usually the governed 3600), you will be be able to use your transmissions best speed, at your engines best RPM, and hopefully without overheating your transmission.
    Hot Lap Garage on RUclips has several hydro Wheel Horses, they are stout units and proven to be very capable in rock crawling, even placing well in TTC. I saw his Ghost pull a dead wheel horse up a crazy rock crawl. He’s starting to have problems with them overheating and I believe he’s planning on installing a oil cooler on one. Hydros are something that I think need more research and trial and error!

    The key to a fast hydro is using a live axle and sprockets on the axle shafts of the hydro to changing the gearing. The bad part is engine braking/slowing down, not sure how the pump would react to that.

    be curious to see how long it lasts. i did this a while back ago with a wheel horse hydro i built for my sister (so she didnt have to having to worry about shifting). she ended up sinking it up to the rear seat and blowing the transaxle. ended up having to leave it. it ended up raining and where it was at it got fully submerged and that was the last i saw of it. so long story short im curious to see how long yours last. that one lasted a week and it was a more beefy mower, it also did about 10 like yours.

    What happens if you pulley swap a hydro

    • @chud327
      @chud327  6 месяцев назад

      Working on that question now on a different mower. Both have doubled their speeds, but feels like the current one makes bubbles in the transmission and it starts slipping. Still 100 times better in the mud, but will probably never get over 11 MPH. Thanks for watching and full video coming soon.

    • @robertthompson4905
      @robertthompson4905 11 месяцев назад

      @Darkness-Blaze19 thats not how it works. Unless ungoverned, more horsepower only equates to more torque. 3600 RPM is 3600 RPM, no matter how much horse power you throw at it.
      It will come to top speed faster and not bog down as easily... but not faster. It's physics
      "Proving the haters wrong"
      What in hillbilly hell are you talking about? Swapping a hydro? No one said you can't... We say YOU SHOULDN'T... look up hydraulic pump cavitation... again, physics for the win

    • @chud327
      @chud327  6 месяцев назад

      There is no deck to cut grass, that is really what you need all the horsepower for. This one is just a rider so use the small engine and save the bigger for another project. In fact, that other project is out, it is one of my recent releases, a General Lee themed race mower. Hope you will check it out and let me know what you think. thanks for watching.
