Pantera has one of the wildest stories in metal. They were an obscure hair metal band in the late 80s and for some reason just knew to reinvent themselves as this band. One of the founders of a new metal sound, groove metal. I can't think of any other band who was able to do this.

RIP Dime (guitars) and Vinnie (drums).
And yes, as teens in the early 90s, our parents did often wonder what it was we listened to. Pantera started off as a glam metal band like Motley Crue, Poison, etc. When Phil (vocals) was hired, that's when the sound changed.
I'll be seeing the current Pantera lineup play this Friday with Metallica at AT&T Stadium. Metallica performs a two night set on this tour and this weekend is in Arlington, TX. Which also happens to coincide with Dime's birthday, and to play in his home town.

He would JAM OUT, and when we would get home, he would say "Thanks Nae" with the biggest smile. Then he would go inside and have the best nap ever. 😂 I grew up listening to Pantera, and I also would hear my dad play their music on guitar (among many other bands). Thanks for reminding me of my dad and all the memories shared with him. 💗

@@kharma7755 They should explore Type O Negative for October too. "Black No. 1". Try and find a long form of the music video, because the studio version removes the best parts. I think Amber would like Peter's deep vocals. Jay would love the bass in that song for sure.

Jumping into the crowd is called "stage diving." If the other fans pass you around it's called "crowd surfing." Singer is Phil Anselmo. The band is from Texas. They started out a typical metal band playing power metal and I think they wore makeup for a short time like glam metal bands, (hair bands). They eventually found their sound and invented "groove metal."

They say the band is from Texas, but the lead singer, Phil Anselmo and another band member is from my home town of New Orleans. They practically lived in a heavy metal dive bar in "Fat City", in Metairie, La, a suburb of New Orleans. Those were some insane times, and I was lucky to be around it all. 🤘😝🤘

A couple more great Pantera tracks are "This Love" and "Drag the Waters". 2 of my all time favs by them. Vinnie Paul was the main reason I got into the heavier side of metal when I was young, will always be grateful to him for that! Absolutely amazing drummer who could drive the song, had great grooves, crazy fills, and knew when to push and when to pull back, one of the all-time best!

I saw Pantera live in Melbourne in the early 90's and my friend and I went to the front - big mistake! We felt the surge of the crowd behind us when the band came on stage and it was so scary! It took so long to push our way to the back and when we got there, I turned around and saw a guy with blood streaming down his chest from his face - grinning from ear to ear! Needless to say, it was an awesome concert! My favorite of theirs is "Walk" but also love "I'm Broken", "Five Minutes Alone" and their Black Sabbath cover "Planet Caravan" - which is a little slower but still awesome (I''m sure Amber would love that cover!) P.S. I love Amber's stank face during this - made me smile! Lotsa luv ❣

I saw Pantera with White Zombie opening and they both hit hard. Couple of dudes got carried out of the pit (and one guy broke his arm jumping off the speakers). They stopped the show a couple times 'cause it got rowdy and there were 2 or 3 paddy wagons outside the venue just arresting people (EM Loews in Worcester in '92 according to Google). I felt a little relieved when it was over that I didn't get hurt tbh.

Cowboys from Hell is one of my fav metal albums of all time, right up there with Pantera's next album Vulgar Display of Power. There's so much to love and appreciate about this band. Definitely give the songs Cemetary Gates, Mouth for War, This Love, and Heresy a listen. If you want a taste from Pantera's last album I recommend the song Revolution is My Name. Glad to see you all venturing further into some metal. Other bands you could queue up to keep the journey going would be Sepultura (maybe the song Territory), or System of a Down (songs Toxicity or Question), or Tool (songs like Aenima, Vicarious, or Lateralus) though arguably they aren't metal, or if you want modern metal that's hard hitting but not overly aggressive something like Spiritbox (song Blessed Be) or Polaris (song The Remedy). Also, I was a big 90s alternative kid, so some other songs you could check out from that era would be "Superman's Dead" by Our Lady Peace, "Better Days" by Citizen King, and "Shimmer" by Fuel. Enjoy the journey!

I've seen it in rock articles several times but the term and birth of "Heavy Metal" comes from two bands back in the late 60's. The band Iron Butterfly with their song "Ina Goda Davida" coming in at a hair over 17 minutes long has everything a rock song needs! The second comes from Steppin' Wolf with the song "Born To Be Wild". In the song there is a line that goes... "I like smokin' Lightening Heavy Metal thunder"... and from the combination of these two bands a newer darker, harder rock n roll emerged into the world.
**(edit) Highly recommend checking out both if you haven't. Peace, Love, and Rock 'N' Roll
