If only people took care of their cars like this in the US, then this wouldn't have to be imported. Most of the old civics are beat to hell simply because of negligence and lack of basic care or appreciation.

Most people that buy commuter cars treat them like replaceable appliances, the ones that arent rusted out here in the states usually end up in some kids garage with a 4 inch exhaust and the largest rims and skinniest tires they can fit. The EM1 seems to be the favorite here in the states now. Very rare to see any honda pre 1995 or so where i live.

SHADY3k no civic s are ruined by all the Mexicans! Japan has no Mexicans so that's why there cars are always in nice condition!

I completely agree! xD I'm Mexican myself here in Houston, Texas and it's all the Mexicans who drive Civics and rice them out lmao. Same with any old car, such as Corollas, B13 Sentras (Tsuru in Mexico, popular in taxis) etc.

These videos are seriously the highlight of my day.You guys have taught me a ton about JDM vehicles.Like what to look for and what to stay away from.Since last March my family has acquired 2 JDM Subaru's.My parents absolutely love the twin turbo Legacy we got and the Forester STI I drive has such low Kms on it.I don't think I would have known about cars like this without these videos. Thanks a million and keep up the excellent work you guys!

Awesome you did a review! Used to have a '91 too from new. Modded when modding was still in its early infancy but kept it nice and clean. Back in the days when modding these cars was still expensive with limited parts here in the US. Other than the one piece headlights and a lot of chrome trim, it looks exactly like the US version.

I had a DX model of the same year with metallic blue paint. The car was a pleasure to drive on the open highway, country roads, or around town. The rear suspension was slightly tweaked to lower it an inch or two, with negative camber, which made it handle like a sports car in the turns.
After 235K miles of driving, over 21 years, something in the front axle drivetrain broke and I called it a day with the car. Sinking money into repairing the drive-train made no sense, as the electricals were getting suspect, the radiator needed replacing, same with the brakes; the steering felt worn; so I got rid of it. The Honda mechanic that got it, ended up sinking thousands in parts to get it running like new again; as the engine and the auto-transmission were near the end of its life.
The few deficiencies the 91 Civic had: The font disc brakes could get used up easily, as I had the front rotors turned and replaced several times. The engine motor-mount broke three times in the 21 years I had the vehicle, but it was a small piece of metal. The top of the radiator was made of plastic and prone to cracking at the mounting point. In its 18th year, the electrical main relay shorted-out on extremely hot days, so the car would not start until the coolness of the evening set in. The CV boots were placed close to the exhaust pipe, where the heat of the exhaust pipe would damage the CV boots, requiring replacing them several times.
But, overall, the car was remarkable! Going into its 21st year/235k miles, aside from the steering, the fit of the vehicle was solid and it still rode well. The MacPherson struts were never replaced, as the Honda dealer service department told me they should last the life of the vehicle.
The car sat outdoors, 24/7, for 21 years, and the interior stayed intact with no signs of fraying with the upholstery or dashboard. All the levers, switches, dials, and handles stayed intact, too, for the 21 years I had it. Whereas I can recall the better built domestic and foreign vehicles from the 1960s and '70s would all have frayed interiors/dashboards; with broken levers, switches, and handles after 10 years of use.
The engine never leaked a drop of oil, and with the use of synthetic oil with scheduled oil changes, it never burned a drop, either. But, I have to say that with the amount of oil changes I did on that vehicle, the screw threads on the oil drain outlet got worn, necessitating a slightly-oversized threaded oil drain plug to compensate for the worn screw threads on the oil pan drain outlet.
The important aspect of having a vehicle to survive that long with no major issues: Being able to financially afford an every 15K mile checkup of the vehicle with a trusted repair shop; as a tuneup, with engine valve adjustments, checking the CV boots, the brakes, and the engine motor mount; really does wonders to head-off future problems.

I looked for years for a totally stock 1990 sedan in red with black interior and a five-speed. I finally found one, and it's in much better condition than this JDM car, with only 150,000 miles, which is not bad after -30 years. I intend to keep it as stock as possible, with the exception of a low-miles JDM import engine and a new clutch. It really is amazing to find one that carried only the driver and has everything original with no rust or dents. Maybe I should not have been so picky about the interior and exterior colors, as well as the five-speed, but I have wanted one just exactly like the one I just got since 1990. The other versions seem to have too short of a wheel-base, and feel scary at speed, I admit to installing 15 inch alloys, they came with nice tires, but I have to have 195/50/15's, which somehow cost more than 35 series 19's. Nice to see that people are appreciating these cars, there will never be cars of this quality that were so cheap, and are still affordable. When others put coffee-can mufflers on Hondas, I bought and sold old Datsun 510's, which now cost 10,000 for a roller with no engine and rust. ' My argument for the Datsun was rear-wheel drive, but there are now kits to make these Civics' four wheel drive, and still weigh just over 2000 pounds.

I just checked this and the SiR with the B16A (160hp) was only in the hatch. The ZC was the best engine in the sedan (Really a fancy D-series engine). It puts out about 130-ish
You the man. Thanks for schooling me.
The FF model was called the Si and the 4WD model was called the RT-Si (Thanks Japanese Wikipedia)
One with an H22 would be killer.

Hey derek, the blue sticker on the top left side of the windshield means the car has been tested for radiation right? My evo has an orange sticker, does the colours mean anything?

    • @PacificCoastAuto
      @PacificCoastAuto  8 лет назад

The sticker on the windshield is for registration, nor radiation. Different testing facilities have different marks for their radiation tests but all cars need it to be done or they are not allowed to enter the export facilities.
