Hey prof, I think the "problem" or nuance with the born this way stuff you were talking about is that it kinda concedes (not really but in a way) that if being queer were a choice it would be wrong to choose it, which obviously it isn't. The leftist cooks made a great video a while back that touches on this subject. Great video, it's really cool that you like Chappell Roan.

Yes, and to add on, it also alienates people who feel their orientation is fluid and has changed over a lifetime, which according to studies, is true in some way or another for all of us. We are all different over time than how we are born, some ways through life experiences, some ways through different hormone fluctuations over a lifespan, and some times through good old fashioned different choices. I think 'born this way' was a great slogan to get the Queer movement's foot in the door, to say basically, 'hey, we're not going anywhere!'. But now our foot is in the door, newer artists like Chappell can acknowledge that being a Queer woman is partly nature and in other ways nurture.

Was about to write basically this! A long time ago I wrote my undergraduate dissertation on Conservative Christianity in North America specifically in relation to the then hot topic of same sex marriage. I remember having a long conversation with my professor about the ‘born this way’ idea and how problematic it was as an ‘argument’. Can basically lead to eugenics and it doesn’t do any favours when certain groups like to lump being gay in with.. let’s say for RUclips ‘disturbing personality traits’. Born this way does not equate to ‘nothing morally wrong’.

tbh I think the tricky thing about it is you're absolutely right but at the same time I think it was a very effective sort of branding move by activists for people less progressively minded. I think it allowed us to kinda fast-track certain aspects of queer rights among certain groups. I think a lot of people who were eventually moved over on queer issues might not have been if they did still think it was a choice, the emphasis on a lack of choice I think made people think "well if it's not a choice, then it's pretty shitty to discriminate against these people for something they had no control over". It's also weird because it's not necessarily a lie either, speaking as a queer person I definitely didn't feel like it was something I chose, it's almost always something people discover about themselves in spite of all the societal pressures pushing them in the other direction, we also know conversion therapy doesn't work. So while it's true that even if it was a choice it would be wrong to discriminate against people who make that choice, and we shouldn't accept queerness only on the grounds that queers can't help themselves or whatever, it's also true that it isn't really a choice, and it's also true that just because something isn't a choice doesn't mean it's something from birth either.

I wanna respond to your thoughts on how the messaging of the album could be perceived as “anti-man”, because I get why you feel conflicted about it.
something that I don’t think many non-lesbian people, both straight and queer, understand about lesbians is that for many of us the hard part of coming to terms with our identity isn’t liking women, it’s not liking men. it can be extremely difficult to extricate your identity from men completely when the societal view of womanhood is in relation to men. this is the concept of “compulsory heterosexuality”, popularized by adrienne rich in an essay on the subject thats worth looking up.
when chappell roan starting writing songs for this album she knew very well that she liked women, however at that time she was in a long term relationship with a man and had never kissed a woman (naked in manhattan was literally a fantasy of hers when she wrote it). only in the past year or so has she started confidently identifying as a lesbian. this album was written concurrent to her exploring her sexuality and coming to terms with her identity by figuring out what she’s not into. so I read the more “anti-man” parts of the albums less as a like, “girls rule boys drool” type of shallow feminism, and more as the frustration of time wasted with men in relation to the euphoria of experiencing real sexual attraction with women

"The hard part of coming to terms with our identity isn't liking women, it's not liking men" IS SOOO TRUE!! Liking women is so easy for me. Like... i just love women, and i love being a woman who loves women. But accepting that i'm not interested in men was really hard because society and everyone around me taught me that women will always need men in their lives. So i believed that, even though i've never been attracted to men at all. That made me identify as bisexual for a long time because i thought that i still needed a man. But i'm really NOT interested in them 😭
I'm so happy that 2 years ago i finally accepted myself as a lesbian and it felt very liberating

Part of the "boys suck" undertones probably stem from her conservative christian upbringing. She tried to fit into the mold that was set for her. She has had boyfriends in the past and has mentioned that she almost got married once. A lot of this album is her embracing the identity that she had previously denied herself. "This is what it's like to be with people you're actually attracted to?!? Holly shit this rocks!" kind of stuff.

just fyi on the topic of drag.
drag is not necessarily linked to lived gender. there's female identifying drag queens and male identifying drag kings, and everything in between. it's more about an exploration of gender presentation than just performing whatever the opposite of your usual gender presentation is.
I've really been enjoying your content, thank you

I think the "boys suck" theme on the album rings true for a young woman trying to figure out a lesbian sexuality. It can be very difficult under the patriarchy to completely disengage your sexuality from a male perspective, because that's so pushed through mainstream society. And I think it can be really common experience for young queer women to initially view their own attraction to women as something in relation or oppostion to men as opposed to desire completely divorced from that.

with regards to the "lesbian propaganda" angle - which I know you're being tongue in cheek about - I think (as a lesbian myself) there is an unspoken context straight people might be missing, which is that every statement that "being a lesbian is awesome" is coming after a lifelong chorus, both internal and external, of "being a lesbian is terrible" - it's a joyful rejection of a lifetime of hating who you are and wishing you were different by saying "actually, being a lesbian is the best, and I'm so glad that I am who I am". It's not lesbian propaganda so much as a rejection of "heterosexual propaganda", with all of society being heterosexual propaganda

I’d also like to expand your definition of drag queens. first, chappell roan isn’t dressing as a drag queen, she IS an actual drag queen and “chappell roan” is her drag persona. while drag queens are usually cis gay men, people of all genders and sexualities have always been drag queens and kings. drag at it’s core is an exaggerated performance of gender.

Always appreciate your analysis, Professor. Just like with Gaga and Beyonce, I do think any analysis of Chappell Roan is incomplete without examining her live performances. Not only in the way it connects to drag culture, but it’s what made her pop into the zeitgeist - NPR Tiny Desk, Coachella, Bonnaroo. Roan has this ability to make you feel like your part of the song; she’s not performing for you, but you feel as if you’re performing with her. This is very evident in the live performances as you see people dancing along with “Hot to Go” or how people scream-sing along with “Good Luck Babe.” Would love to see if watching her concert performance would shift some of your perspective on her music.

Or... Big shock... You don't have to compare the two because there is MORE than enough space for both INCREDIBLE women to exist.
Shock horror. What shall you do when you aren't pitting women against each other 🤭
It's completely ridiculous to compare them, by the way. They have such different singing styles. It's like comparing Stevie Nicks to Cyndi Lauper. It's not a fair comparison.
Taylor is far more versatile in terms of a seemless guitar/piano & singing performance. Taylor also easily matches Chappell's breath work if you listen to a song like The Black Dog.
It's also super easy to claim Taylor's vocals aren't extraordinarily dynamic in terms of texture, vocal technique, complexity, etc., if you grew up with her and still have a stereotyped idea of what her voice sounds like.
Taylor has developed a KILLER alto range as she's gotten older and her articulation is also incredibly strong.
Whereas Chappell's vocals are an immediate, new experience. She comes to us not as a teenager, but vocally fully formed.
It's easy to be impressed with a singer when you are exposed to them first at the height of their vocal powers.

    • @emmavink
      @emmavink Месяц назад +1

I'd also LOVE you to pick any if the ballads from The Anthology from Taylor and tell me they not only stand up against Chappell's ballads, but are just better than almost anyone writing her genre of folk/indie pop music right now.
And if you are rolling your eyes at me defending Swift, I am 38 and only came to her full albums in 2019 off the recommendation of Florence Welch from Florence and the Machine who've been my favourite band for nearly 15 years now.
I don't even think of myself as a Swiftie, but I am ridiculously impressed by the scope and breadth of her work. Both lyrically, melodically and in composition.
And the song she collaborated with Florence and the Machine on The Tortured Poet's Department might be one of the best collabs I've ever heard.

@@metalsalsa again, it's not an accurate comparison.

    • @metalsalsa
      @metalsalsa Месяц назад +13

@emmavink Of course they're different, but I do believe something like richness of the voice is something you can analyze objectively. Chappell, Taylor, and Adele have their own unique voice characteristics. Which one you prefer is the subjective choice. A lot of people would prefer a voice like Taylor's: pure, clean, and simple. Chappell's voice has more harmonics to it, creating a richer timbre. I'm just saying that's what I prefer.

  • @pigg90

    AVAA @12:32
I think girl in red will not blow up in the mainstream the way Chappell is due to the difference in their aesthetic. Marie looks too 'obviously' gay whereas Chappell is femme and hence still appealing to the heteronormative patriarchal gaze, even though what she is doing is extremely queer. Majority of the mainstream audience would 'feel' like girl in red does not make music for them even though themes of love and heartbreak should be (and are) universal. They will always prefer to consume media that requires a bare minimum of perspective shift/adjustment from their default lens and expectations. Chappell's music is also way more upbeat and catchy and vivid in a way that most casual listeners probably enjoy it without understanding the message under all the hooks and the choreography and the costumes.
As for what you said about this album feeling like it's making a case for rejecting men and 'choosing' lesbianism, you cannot fully understand this album or her single Good Luck, Babe without understanding the concept of compulsory heterosexuality.
In a world where heterosexuality is considered the default, most girls grow up assuming they're straight and are socialized to engage with sex and romance as desirable and permissable only with men. So if you're a lesbian, the process of dating before you realize and accept you're a lesbian can be an angsty, confusing, and dissatisfying experience, both sexually and romantically, that has less to do with the quality of the men you date and more to do with your innate incompatibility with them, and a lot to do with the friction that arises from comparing your life with the lives of others who don't have to struggle with not aligning with heterosexuality. It doesn't help, as you mentioned, that many men don't care to learn how to satisfy women. So there's an overlap in the experience of all women who have ever dated men in any capacity that makes it harder for *some* women to realise that maybe they're just *not* into men at all.
It's a complex topic that I can't explain succinctly, but what you're hearing is Chappell exploring and uncovering her sexuality in real time, and how confusing and messy that process can be in a patriarchal, heteronormative world. It's not really 'about' the men she appears to be disparaging. It's about her knowing she's attracted to women and still trying to make sense of why men never seem to work for her.
And I don't mean this as criticism at all, but I find it fascinating how you and several progressive cis straight men tend to initially respond to your realities not being centered in artistic narratives, in spite of being as socially aware as you are.
Anyway, I think you're a very cool Dad and I appreciate how receptive you always are to expanding your world view 😎

It's not about hating men and it's not about women choosing to be with women because men are bad at relationships/sex. Realizing and accepting you're a queer woman can absolutely be triggered by having unfulfilling relationships with men. A lot of us don't know who we are from an early age. We might feel that we're different but not quite understand why. We assume we're straight because that's the default. Add on to that the way that *many* straight women talk about men and it's very, very easy to think that your own unfulfilling relationships with men (emotionally, sexually etc.) are totally normal. You're not gay, that's just how a lot of women who date men feel! For me, this album is her journey into accepting that men are just not working for her because she loves women. And it will absolutely help women out there who are in disappointing relationships with men and don't understand that they're queer yet. It's an important record for gay women and captures a specific journey of realizing queerness that many women have had.
Also, I truly hate the "born this way" argument. I understand why it was used in the past, but it's outdated and kinda offensive. And I think for those of us who don't "just know" from a young age, it makes the process of realizing you're gay a lot longer and harder than it needs to be.

I know there have already been and are currently lesbian/bi women artists and there are songs that they have released about loving other women , but this is the first time where in the mainstream pop world there is a very talented lesbian artist who is unashamed with her sexuality and has multiple songs in her album being overtly sexual and speaking on this specific subject proudly. There’s nothing performative about it either she’s only being honest. We’ve already had major gay male pop stars like Elton John who are given their due respect for their musical artistry but seeing a lesbian who is quickly rising to that level of fame hasn’t quite been done before. This is a huge deal to lesbians like myself. I can understand why straight people, especially men, will listen and think she’s being “anti-man” because many people just see lesbians as women who hate men but the truth is we just don’t center ourselves around men. We don’t hate them we just aren’t into them. Her frustrations with men is like many lesbian women who dated men before coming to terms with their sexuality: disillusioned because of knowing that something huge is missing. She’s not trying to shame men, she’s just coming to the realization that she doesn’t need one because she’s not attracted to them. I think the “lesbian propaganda” was more tongue in cheek than literal but that’s a really uninformed take. She’s not trying to convince straight women to start dating other women, she’s just describing her own experience as a woman who realized her sexual orientation after deconstructing the pressures of compulsory heterosexuality. Sexual attraction isn’t a choice; it’s just something that happens. I have spoken with so many straight women who wish they could be attracted to other woman because of how disappointing many men can be but simply aren’t because it’s not a choice.

I feel that all the time, as the “golden gay” rhetoric is what pushed me deeper into dating men and not engaging with queer social circles because I didn’t feel gay enough. Hearing a lesbian talk openly about her past dating men makes me feel much less like an imposter in the lesbian community. It’s really made a big impact on my self-acceptance (as has playing Stardew Valley, ha ha!).

Just throwing this out there: I think Chappel's a lesbian, but for a certain subset of people it IS a choice on whether you want to be with men or women. That is, bisexuals. And I see a lot of bi women who really connect with her music. Idk what that says about the music, but it makes sense to me - most queer women aren't all the way at the end of the Kinsey Scale. So I feel like even if that's not what Chappell meant by a lot of the songs, that's how a lot of people relate to it. Like yeah, she COULD date a man, but right now she'd rather be with a woman cause men just don't hit right now. I'm a straight guy, so this might be totally off, though. AVAA.

lots of sapphic women definitely relate to her songs, but the lesbian experience is definitely very specific and different. i can see that expressed in a lot of her songs, as even the ones where she mentions men in her past, etc you can tell she was never … into it. she even says it herself in many interviews. so while im sure all manner of sapphics can relate to her in some instances, lesbians definitely have some specific lyrics that will probably hit harder. (good luck babe is a whole song about the lesbian experience with comphet even)

Sky Hundred by Parannoul is a korean noise-pop/shoegaze album which has resonated with me on a very deep emotuional level and i think it's fantastic and a lot of people agree with me on that. Would be cool to see you cover some korean music

AVAA! (this became a habit now)
love the bow and the lesbian flag pin and i'm guessing right now that your favorite track is california or pink pony club! (i was right, i know you with these pop girlies now prof skye)
as a slightly confused bisexual, dropping men and choosing to date women is very relatable. that was the first thing that got my attention on this album, second thing was the pressures of the society and mothers, as pink pony club and after midnight
kind of ironic that the book you recommended about female pleasure is written by a man but i didn't it read it so i wouldn't know ;))
pink pony club makes me feel exactly like how you described it. but i think its also a bit bittersweet because for some of us because its only a dream, a safe place in only our minds. that song makes me feel hopeful and sad at the same time. but also i am so happy pink pony club exists for those who can make it real
    anyway, boys suck

Thanks for this video! Your point about digital technology making “having a situationship easier to get into and harder to get out of” (27:30) made so much sense.
I recommend watching the old music video for “Casual” and then the new music video for the same song. The older music video-the one with Chappell languishing in a sad bedroom-suggests a straight relationship with a stereotypical player guy. The new video-the one with the sea creature-changes the song into one about comphet, with shallow straight relationships but much deeper gay ones.
    **Spoiler alert:
The love interest in the second video is a *literal* man-eater.

Chappell Roan is not her real name, its her stage/drag name, and she has said she is a Drag Queen. Cis and trans women can be drag queens, usually cis women are called Bio Queens. Her real name is Kayleigh Amstutz, but she's said she's uncomfortable with people using her "real" name, both because how parasocial fans can be, but also its weird, she's in drag so you use her drag name. And the bow looks great.

It's such a strange cognitive dissonance to love this music and agree with all the "boo men" stuff, then realizing I'm still straight no matter what I'd like 😅 Definitely not a choice, cause if it was, I'd be switching sides after this album. I think your analysis of the propaganda aspect is spot on.
