After watching your moms video I tried a tomato pie….best thing I ever ate! I’m a 65 yr old southern girl….why didn’t I know about this before? Thanks to your mom and you for keeping oldies but goodies alive!
The first time I saw this, right here years ago, (I had never even heard of it) I thought it was one of the strangest dishes ever. This is one of the best dishes I've ever had. We love it.
My Moma made tomato gravy with meatloaf. I would love to have her recipe. It's one that none of us kids ever got from her. One more thing that slipped into the past. :(
Of all the Tomato Pie recipes out in the world, I chose to make your mom's several years ago and I was not disappointed! I have it saved it and now that you brought it up, I am craving it. I will be on the hunt for some decent tomatoes if they can be found. Not easy these days. It's been so long since I tasted a real tomato. Thanks for the video!!

Hi Steve David Harris here. This looks great !! This is the second time in my 64 years of being a western NC hillbilly I have ever heard of tomato pie. First time was on an episode of gomer Pyle USMC in the early sixties. Gomer wandered off base and happened upon a tomato farm operated by, I think, Denver Pyle. The guy that played Mr. Darling on Andy Griffith. He asked Gomer if his family had hulled out some of some of the over-ripe ones and made a tomato pie. Anyway, I'm gona try it. Printed it out, when my tomatoes come in I will try it! After my hubby passed 10 years ago I started watching your mom, just watching her cook and listening to her helped me. Know time has passed but sorry for your loss.

I have a pie crust recipe for you. I've tried it and it's easy and fast. The pastry crust is flaky, light textured and browns nicely. It's sturdy enough for quiche. I got it from an old Wesson Oil cookbook. Anyhow, for 2 pie crusts. 2 cups sifted all purpose flour, 1 1/2 teaspoons salt, 1/2 cup Wesson oil, 1/4 cup cold milk. In a large bowl, combine the flour and salt. In a measuring cup put the oil and milk: do not stir together. Pour the oil-milk mixture over the flour. Stir until combined. Divide the dough in half. Roll out between 2 pieces of wax paper. Put into pie dish. Follow instructions for the pie. For 1 crust: 1 1/3 cup all purpose flour, 1 teaspoon salt, 1/3 cup Wesson oil, 3 tablespoons cold milk. Combine flour and salt in a large bowl. In a measuring cup put the oil and milk: do not stir together. Pour the oil-milk mixture over the flour. Stir until combined. Roll out between 2 pieces of wax paper. Put into pie dish. Follow instructions for the pie. It works with non-Wesson oil, oil. I've tried it with grapeseed oil and I've tried it with butter that I melted and slightly cooled. I'm pretty sure olive oil will work in this recipe too---might be good for savory pies like your mom's tomato pie recipe, quiche or meat pies. And rolling the dough between wax paper or parchment paper is important. It sticks to the rolling pin no matter how much flour you use. Happy Independence Day!

I remember when Miss Phyllis did this. I added it to my saved recipes, but life flew by and I have not yet made it. When the garden tomato's come in, I am definitely going to make it. Congrats to Benjamin. Hope you have a wonderful 4th of July. God bless!
Thank you Colonel. I was looking this morning for Sun Dried Tomato recipes, as we still have a couple gallon baggies left from last year. There are about two bushels of green tomatoes on the vine, time is coming. This recipe will come in great in about a week. Happy Independence Day! God Bless and stay safe.
Your Moms recipe for ‘Onion Pie’ is really good too. I’ve never made herTomato Pie. but now I will, tomorrow; been taking care of 93yr old tomato loving Aunty. A Marie Calandar’s crust is ready in the fridge. (If I don’t make the crust, it’s to only one I will purchase due to quality) (Growing up Mom sometimes used a PetRitz frozen crust... but it is no where close to Marie Calandars)
Wow Steve. I have never had tomao pie. This recipe is so different. I even think it can handle some pepperoni inside. Yummy. Appreciate a recipe for upcoming tomato harvest.
When you were tasting this beauty, I thought I heard you say oregano, but all I saw you put in it was basil. Either way, when I make it, I will add oregano. By the way, you are such a wonderful man, with a wonderful family, I don't understand how they stand for you to be away from them for such a long time. I also hope that when your contract is up and you go home for good, you will continue to keep this channel going. It has become something I look forward to everyday, just as I did when your mom had it.

I LOVE this recipe. I had never heard of tomato pie until I ran across your Mom’s recipe. She used 4 large tomatoes for hers. It is absolutely delicious and very rich and filling. It’s a meal all by itself.
I've heard this little tip to keep pie crust drier, you can brush it with egg whites and then lightly bake it. If you aren't supposed to bake crust first, I think you can still do it just don't cook to long...I'm not an experienced baker, but I am an experienced pie eater!! Just passing on info I've picked up and maybe someone can use....loved your mom btw. One more tip. Add eggs one at a time and blend after each addition, they blend in easier. Although you really didn’t seem to have much of a problem blending them together. I can't wait to make this cuz I love tomatoes.
Pulling up Phyllis's tomato pie recipe to make and saw we are on the same wavelength! I am so happy I came across her channel so long ago. I know you miss her. And the cheese on the bottom really does do the trick! I've won over my mother in law (who eats meatless) with this recipe. 💗🍅
I love this pie, make it all the time. I switch up the cheeses and seasonings sometimes for a change. The original recipe is my favorite but changing the cheddar to pepper jack is a close second! 😋
This looks interesting..i dont know if i would like this or not, but i MIGHT have to try it and see. I dont eat meat, so its hard to find things that doesnt have meat in it, thats yummy. I hope everyone is having a Happy fourth. I miss Phyllis and Bucky and chatting with Phyllis....glad you are still keeping the channel going!! I am sure your mom would be proud!!
Oh- I miss you Phyllis! Now wouldn't mom have served that with a simple green salad? For her and Bucky to have for lunch... Also, I have had a little scrape with esophageal cancer so it hasn't happened lately but I used to make this pie a couple of years back and I was always considering adding a few pieces of pepperoni or canadian bacon to it. Have you tried that? I still want to but at this time I have an aversion to pie dough. i guess I could use a crustless version of the recipe! Ha! just thought of that! lol Thankyou for the video!
I once knew an elderly lady who made her version of tomato pie, but she actually put sugar in her tomatoes, and it was sweet. Steve, that looks delicious. I will definitely make this.❤️❤️
I've never had a tomato pie. Yours looks delicious. This seems easy-peasy, right up my alley. I'll be buying a crust, though. 😁 Thanks, Colonel!! Thank you for your service & for the video. Happy 4th!! God Bless. 🇺🇸🤩🇺🇸
I have wanted to make this since your mom first published it but I've loved her onion pie so much that I haven't tried anything else. I have 10lbs of onions waiting to become pie ha ha. my mouth watered the whole time watching you with the tomato pie yum! LOL!!
Delicious ❤️ first time making a tomato 🍅 pie with ripe tomatoes. Here in rural Mississippi make fried green tomato pie. Loved your Mom’s ❤️ videos too
Gonna try this sometime this week. & daggone it, if you dont look juuuuust like your mama! We miss her (& Mr. B) sooooo much. Sending love from East Texas
I had never tried tomato pie until your Mom posted her video. I made it the day after I saw her video and have been making it her way ever since. Absolutely fabulous. Thanks for the reminder that it is July and I have not made this yet. She is also the one that got me using Duke's mayo. Happy 4th of July and thank you to you, your family and all the other men and women who serve/have served our country and the families that support them!
My favorite thing growing up was a tomato and cucumber salad or a tomato mayo and cucumber sandwich my grandmom used to make it all the time during the summer because we lived off the food we grew in our one acre field. My family is full blooded Italian so we ate alot of tomato pie too! Ours was just a dough shaped into a square and mashed tomatoes with basil and garlic would be spread on top and baked for a short time. No cheese hahaha just the dough the mashed tomato, basil and garlic. Oh I forgot to mention if you had fresh basil leaves and fresh garlic, it really would have knocked your socks off... but you weren't wearing any anyway 😂😂
This looks amazing! I would add bacon crumbles on top or underneath for another dimension of culinary flare! You are doing a terrific job with these videos. Enjoy your pie and a Happy 4th to you and your family!
I have never had tomato pie. I'm not sure I would like it. Good job though Colonel Steven. Not pretty but eats good is what counts, lol ! Thank you for sharing this recipe. Thank you and your family for their service... Benjamin. The one preparing to serve... Bella. Happy 4th of July.
Happy Fourth. Thank you and your sons for your service. May God bless and keep yall safe. Cant wait try Tomato Pie. Friend from North Georgia Mountains .
I know that is tasty. I have made her recipe several times. For a little different flavor once in a while, I'll saute' some onions and layer in between the tomatoes. God be with Will and you and family. Thank you for your service.
Going to try this tomorrow. Fresh tomatoes are beginning to be plentiful here in North Mississippi. I've cooked tomatoe pie before but this recipe sounds delicious. Can't wait to taste it. Thanks Steve. Wr appreciate you!!!
Happy Fourth ofJuly Colonel! Been a long while since I came here to enjoy your COOL Videos, this Tomato Pie your momma used to make sure looks SCRUMPTIOUS! Not being Southern, never had any before, but thanks to you I can now make this and enjoy Miss Phyllis' Homemade Tomato Pie! Buen Provecho Colonel, Liked and sending ya a fraternal hug for ya. :)
I remember when your Mom made this recipe too!!! Having it for MY supper tonite!! Some lucky Hubby won't eat it!! Got it allllllll to myself!! Yummy!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣❤
I watched a video of someone making a tomato pie just the other day. As a result your momma showed up in my feed making her tomato pie so I watched that. Then I clicked on your channel and here you are making it as well. Now I absolutely have to make one soon bc i can’t get it out of my mind. Sending blessings to you and your family!
What's better than a tomato pie? A tomato pie with bacon in it! We don't put eggs or flour in it, just mayo, cheese and fresh basil leaves (with tomato and bacon, of course). I always put the cheese between the crust and tomatoes, too. Good job!
That tomato 🍅 pie 🥧 looks sooo good! 😊 had my mouth watering, as always! 😂 it also looks easy to make and bake as well! Yummy! 😋 It’s Independence Day in the U.S of A. today! Thinking of you Steve, your boys and all who is serving their country and to the ones who have served before you! ❤️
@@jrt1776 TY I was just wondering because of the cheese. Sounds so great. I cant wait until my tomato harvest. They come in all at once, like the zuchinni !!!
Tomato pie is one of my favorite things! Can’t wait for my garden tomatoes to be ready. My mom-in-law added some zucchini to hers once and it was delicious! Your pie crust looks great, Steve.
Happy Fourth of July. At least it is the 4th here. Thank you and your family for your service in keeping us free and safe. I have never had tomato pie but I know that if your Mom said it was good then it was. I just can't safely cook anymore. I have had a stroke and things don't work as the once did. When fall gets here and the oven won't heat up the house so much, I will ask my daughter to prepare it for me or maybe she will help me to do it.
We would like you to turn your mom’s recipes into a book it would sell overnight I promise will you please think about it Colonel thank about it please God bless
Looks awesome! I remember a few years back when your Mom made this recipe and brought Bucky a piece to try and he just loved it and I think Phyllis said he ate two pieces! I loved watching him test what Phyllis made. He really enjoyed it all! I said after that video that I would make this and guess what? I never did but I promise Steven that I will follow your video and make it! It looks sooo good! Thanks for doing this recipe!🥰

I'm going to make this. It is right up my alley! I loved your mother and have so many of her recipes saved. Thank you and it looks so good, I can't wait to go to the store for some tomatoes and cheese.
Great video. I thought the pie might be too wet with the tomatoes but the finished product looked delicious. Thank you for honoring your Mom with your cooking videos! Keep it up.

I will make this for sure! Thank you so much my husband & I just retired! So we will be making more of your dishes...
Enjoy your retirement!
I think I'd add some onions to that, can't go wrong with onions and tomatoes!
I know that is tasty. I have made her recipe several times. For a little different flavor once in a while, I'll saute' some onions and layer in between the tomatoes. God be with Will and you and family. Thank you for your service.
I'll try that next time!
Going to try this tomorrow. Fresh tomatoes are beginning to be plentiful here in North Mississippi. I've cooked tomatoe pie before but this recipe sounds delicious. Can't wait to taste it. Thanks Steve. Wr appreciate you!!!
Thanks, Robert!
That looks delicious! Can't believe that this Alabama girl has never had tomato pie!

Looks yummy Steve!
Never heard of this but can't wait to give it a try. Thank you Sir for sharing. Take care and God Bless.
I’ve been looking for a good tomato pie recipe for the last several years. Thank you! Looks delish!
I use lots of fresh basil instead of dry. About 15 leaves. Makes a difference.
I'll do that next time, Karen!
@@PhyllisStokes I think your Mom used dry bc she didn’t have any fresh. Fresh is so delicious and pretty.
Love Tomato pie, and that pie looked awesome.
Good job!
Sounds great!
That tomato 🍅 pie 🥧 looks sooo good! 😊 had my mouth watering, as always! 😂 it also looks easy to make and bake as well! Yummy! 😋
It’s Independence Day in the
U.S of A. today! Thinking of you Steve, your boys and all who is serving their country and to the ones who have served before you! ❤️
Thank you, Cheryl!
@@PhyllisStokes You are very welcome! 🤗
Looks delicious Steve, now if you could just fly a piece over to Pa., I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks for sharing. Stay well and safe.
Do you eat it warm or can you eat it cold ?
This can be served warm or cold/ room temp. Probably doesnt need to be refrigerated and is best at room temp
@@jrt1776 TY I was just wondering because of the cheese. Sounds so great. I cant wait until my tomato harvest. They come in all at once, like the zuchinni !!!
My grandma made 2 crust green tomato pie. It was 😋 yummy add some vanilla ice cream. Great memories - thanks. Blessings🙏
Intriguing! With ice cream?
Yes. But green tomatoes. Kinda made like apple pie.
Tomato pie is one of my favorite things! Can’t wait for my garden tomatoes to be ready. My mom-in-law added some zucchini to hers once and it was delicious! Your pie crust looks great, Steve.
Thanks! I"m a little self conscious about how it looks...LOL!
Steve, the important thing is how it tastes!
Sorry to hear that, Debbie. It was super easy to put together.
Thank You Colonel!! Loved when your Mom made it also!!! Happy 4th
I miss seeing your mom. Have you gotten all your mom’s recipes into a booklet.
You won't regret it, Suzanne. It's good!

I'm in NY state and can't wait for new tomatoes to come in.
I’ll be trying that recipe this summer! Looks really yummy!
Keep it up.
I think the cheese helped protect the pie crust. Wasn't soggy at all!
Never had that before have give try Look good
Looks good can't wait to try this one Happy 4TH of July Steve.
What a great video! Blessing to you Colonel Steve!
