  • I'm starting my most ambitious army project ever - a Marienburg inspired Empire army with Citadel Miniatures from every era of Games Workshop history and which can be fielded in every edition of Warhammer Fantasy Battle, Age of Sigmar, and The Old World!
This is the first of my project diaries as I talk through the pitch for the army, the story I have been developing, and the units and models I have already decided are a must.

Ah, Marienburg. Through the magic of roleplaying I've spent countless hours in that city. Years ago I GM'd a campaign set in Marienburg taking inspiration from the excellent 'Sold Down The River' sourcebook for 1st edition Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay. My players were a rag-tag band of smugglers on board the "fastest hunk of planks on the Reik, The Centennial Sparrow" (a river barge of much renown in the underworld), moving banned goods from Marienburg and into the Empire. Many fond memories!

Poor Martha, my furrball is sprawled outside in the shade, I know how you feel .. its too hot. Your Empire army concept sounds excellent, the back story sounds good to me, troop register and carry case .. thats so cool to me. I'll walk along with the Trudot baggage train and watch your dream come true. Good luck. Dont worry about those AoS presculpted bases, I've had a few of those and theyre on the most part, not too difficult to deal with, I have my own basing style too.

What allways intrigued me about Marienburg was its esthetic; its unmistakeably Imperial... yet distinct. If you take a look at the Marienburg miniature range from Mordheim, or their entry in 'Heraldry and Uniforms of the Empire' you'll know what I mean. I allways pondered about collecting a Marienburg-Empire army back in the day, but I didn't really know how to realize it... until the release of the Empire Archer / Huntsmen kit. These guys look sooo much like the Mordheim era Marienburgers with their overcoats, that all they're missing is a halberd to make the perfect Marienburg Statetrooper.

Hi! I'm listening along to your History of Warhammer series and your new Empire army for the Old World series while I re-build my High Elf Army for The Old World! I had a vague idea for a Lothern themed army since I love and have a ton of Sea Guard models. This video has also inspired me to dive deeper into the lore and I've decided to theme my army around Finubar and his sailing expeditions to the Old World since the time period seems the same or quite close to the setting for the new game (I guess we can be a little flexible if it's not). I'm having a blast reading the lore which never really appealed to me before, planning out my army with units that would be fit to travel over the sea (either on a boat or flying) and thinking about what colour scheme to pick! Thanks for your videos and for the inspiration!

You're probably way ahead at this point, but I've been doing a ton of rebasing recently (for obvious Old World reasons) and for the sculpted bases like Underworlds or other push-fit models, I'd recommend just clipping the rims off the bases and then you'll have just the model and its "ground" to either continue trimming or glue straight down to a square base.

Fantastic project Jordan, looking forward to see how it goes. I think you may be causing problems for yourself using the ship deck bases though. They look fantastic, however as you are going to using miniatures from lots of periods and styles, you will have models of different heights. The easiest way to model the base as a small mound or have the model stood on a rock, I think those ship deck bases are going to give you a real headache. Good luck, however you go for it, I will be watching closely.

Consistency will mainly come from color choices. That is a bit tricky, because pirates and marienburg are known for colorful fabrics. Maybe you could try to limit yourself to a certain palette (Zorn Palette is the most famous in the world of warhammer, if you like blanchitsu-vibes) or you go full tricolore with the french theme.

Nice! That's a great choice, I'll be happy to follow you along. I'm in the progress of building my ultimate hobby dream army, strictly 6th ed Tomb Kings, no newfangled 8th ed plastics (I quite dislike those). I already have acquired models for over 2000pts, but I'm still missing a few units that were available during 6th ed which I'll add in when I can find them for a bearable price. I luckily had saved around 1000pts of TK back from 2003 from an army I never finished which I'm in the process of painting. I love the painting side and I'm putting around 15-20 hours per skeleton, as I want to really honor these great classic miniatures. 16 skeletons done so far out of the 60 I need for my current 2000pts list and out of the 100 I have, not to mention all the other models. :D Oh well, I'll be done in around 3-4 years...

In 3rd edition my Empire general was a model I got in a citadel box of (I believe) heroic fighters, it was a fully armoured human with a 2 handed axe and a sallet helm with the classic Blanche-like grinning moon. He was used as a here in all the following editions as well, when needed. I am pretty sure I still have him, with my original (not bad at all to begin with) paintjob improved several times over the ages. Maybe you could do something like that as well? Aesthetic wise, he would need to be resculpted to modern standards, but I guess his overall looks could also work in Cities of Sigmar forces. Hope you enjoy your voyage. One thing, though....Trudeau? Really? The name summons vileness and political madness more at home in a Skaven army :P
