You missed one important part. When the Oracle tells Neo he’s not The One, she tells him he’s waiting for something, “another life, perhaps.” This feeds into her other prophecy that either Neo or Morpheus will die, implying that Neo HAS to die to be reborn as The One.
IT'S MY TOP 5 FILMS OF ALL TIME. THIS MOVIE NEVER GETS OLD. THE CONCEPT, THE ACTING AND THE SOUNDTRACK. IT SWEEPS ME AWAY. I NEVER FELT THAT FEELING AGAIN.
I was 14 when The Matrix came out. My cousin and I were sitting in the very first row in the theater and we were both dumbfounded. Story and philosophy-wise my comprehension of the film was minimal lol, but my jaw was on the floor. The action, the music, the thrill... I have so many favorite action / scifi films and Matrix probably wouldn't even be in top ten, but never in my life have I been so positively shocked in the theater. I wish everyone could experience something like that. I can't forget how my cousin and I kept looking at each other, eyes and mouth wide open, whispering 'wtf just happened' to each other. :D
The real prophetic rule that the Oracle gives Neo comes right before what you showed at 4:11: "I'm not the One...?" "Sorry kid... You got the gift--but it looks like you're waiting for something." "What?" "Your next life maybe; who knows?" The rule that you showed--that Neo would have to make a choice between his life and Morpheus' life--feeds into this greater rule; and by saving Morpheus (and dying!), Neo follows the lesser rule and unlocks his next life in the greater one.
I was going to give this a video a thumbs down because everything the oracle said came true. Indeed the point in watching the film again is essentially to understand the whole resurrection thing to die and come back like some sort of demigod seems to be trailed in the move Most every comment misses the mark and the analysis completely misses this
The only part of this movie I don't understand is when Cipher makes a deal with Agent Smith to turn against the crew. How did he do this without anyone seeing him do this??
Oh shoot. I didn't even realize that. Maybe he did it when everyone was asleep? But at the same time, you need someone from outside the Matrix to bring you back sooooooo. IDK MAN.
Mr. Bodymassagemachine The Wachowskis said that Cypher is writing an automated system in one of the scenes in the movie which he later used to enter the Matrix alone.
Mr. Bodymassagemachine But he does get caught: by Neo. He's setting it up when everyone on the ship is asleep, just as he should be. Neo stumbles upon Cypher and he visibly shits himself when it happens. Only after he remembers Neo can't read the code does he play it cool and buddies up to him.
First of all, as pointed out, he never met Smith while the crew was up, but he does get seen by Neo as he's about to set up a meeting or something. The thing is, Neo didn't understand the language, so all he saw was random green letters and symbols. He was also the one who understood the coding the most, so he was in charge of watching it. The real question is, how does he get in and out of the Matrix without anyone plugging him in or calling a phone to bring him back.
Anybody notice how in the first matrix, Neo is very willing and eager to tell Morpheus about certain things like what the oracle told him? Then towards the second and third installments in the franchise, he won't even tell him what the creator of the matrix told him about the fate of the one? I'm not sure if that holds and significance, but I think it's interesting.
It seems to me this movie is becoming more and more underrated as years go by, and I don't know the reason of it. I think Matrix was better than T2 and Jurassic Park from 90s. I also go further and say it was better than Star Wars as well??

deranged subjective opinion. Its as good as T2 and Star Wars, Jurassic Park doesn't deserve to be compared to those titles though as its just dumb fun with no deeper meaning like the other movies above.

This video is why The O-racle will always loose. Power of FREE WILL. She can only tell the future of the possibilities he's already selected, but not the possibilities he's yet to decide. Neo will always have one up on her, because he's the prototype. That's why in the end he was able to cross over and use the same system that trapped him and invertently trap the agents. He didn't resist the program. He merged with it, removed the glitches, and defeated them. Neo and team won. 😏💯
I get that the prophecy was that Neo would fall in love with Trinity because he died (she would fall in love w/ a dead man), and since Neo came back to life, the rules were broken and the agent died. But why DID Neo come back to life?
The rules were not broken. The poster misunderstood the rules. The Oracle points out he he is gifted but is waiting for something the Oracle say "i don't know! May be your next life". The one can reshape the matrix, hence he does not need to dodge bullets. When he is fighting Smith in the subway he is bullet dodging when he is fighting him in the hallway he hack him and destroys him.
Just wondering if you could touch more on the Neo/Smith fight scene, and how Neo visually through fighting and not words, becomes more accepting of his role as The One.
The best science fiction movie breaking their own rules is looper. The time traveling time lines lost all sense at almost the beggining, but that doesn't matter.
That's because the narrative is more about realizing that in 30 years, he's still the same selfish man. Not about time travel and the rules were never deemed much importance.
The paradoxes this movie creates are one thing, but if they apparently don't give a fuck about these rules than they should keep up with it and not have them affect the plot just when they need to (cough* the ending *cough) Also, just to write out how ridiculous the whole concept is. If he kills himself, his old self could never have come back, if his old self never came back, he could not have killed himself ("But Goji" you might say "perhaps that's why the movie earned the name Looper huh) well, would be all fine and good, but then you consider that if he kills himself, the whole plot couldn't even be happening as his old self was involved in the creation of the rainmaker. Then you consider that if his old self wasn't responsible for that, he wouldn't have died either and probably happily lived out his life. Then you consider that his old self coming back is the reason he killed himself. But if his old self didn't come back why would he kill himself? So in return, things start again. And perhaps I wouldn't be so upset about this had they not established early on that what changes in the past immediately changes the future, including memories, scars etc. This, however, would also in return mean that if his old self came to the past, his past self would know that he shouldn't get involved with that woman, therefore creating another paradox as he would never have gone back in time to kill the rainmaker then and everything goes on like this. I mean for fuck's sake, get your shit together. I can find no value in the story when they establish rules but then go fuck, it, we are too lazy to come up with a reason why it doesn't affect us now. Why even establish these rules then, huh?
PlayingGoji, they established the "rules" to make sure you understood the narrative, but the film never seemed those rules important. The story is more about him realizing that he'll still be that selfish man that he is now. To end the suffering of everybody, he kills himself. It's an allegorical and metaphorical film than it is literal. Take it literally, then you'll just get posed off, even though from the very beginning, it was set up to not be a literal film.
The Oracle tells him that he's got the gift, but that he's waiting for something. Perhaps the next life. I'd argue it's this prophecy, not Trinity's, is what brings him back to life, or maybe he never died. But saw something in the void, between The Matrix and the real world.
You failed to parse my statement. I said Dunkirk is the best movie I seen since The Matrix, not the only film. This implies i believe that Dunkirk is the finest film released since 1999, not that I have not seen any fine films in the meantime. I wonder which bit confused you? Perhaps if you can't understand simple statements Dunkirk is not the movie for you.
Oh don't try to be all smartass on us. You clearly understood the intention of these comments. They implied that if you haven't seen any good movies between 1999s Matrix and 2017 Dunkirk then you probably haven't watched a lot of movies in the meantime. Seriously, your smug comment did nothing other than making you seem like a knobhead. Get your head out of your arse for once, would ya?
They imply I have not seen any good movies, I have, just not better than Dunkirk. I said 'best since The Matrix.' It isn't a hard concept. It is my opinion; feel free to disagree, maybe suggest a better movie, but you can't suggest i haven't seen any other movies. As for smug, just reread your own comment. It must be your first day on the internet.
Originality really doesn't exist. Everything that has been thought has been though, everything that has been said has been said, everything that has been done has been done. NOTHING new under the sun. Better to be good than original, because originality is an impossibility.
haoighOIhoiöHrAHCAHTIAGDUHAOIEO: There you go, judging from the human mind, the time of the existence of keyboards etc, the chances are basically zero that anyone ever wrote this exact sequence of letters in a RUclips comment. This means it is original, which in turn means your theory was just proven wrong.
+PlayingGoji You're confusing the stew for the vegetables. See, your series of random letters comes from the English and Latin alphabets, it is not original. Its only purpose is to show a string of letters that have not been used before, or at least shown publicly, an idea that even I have done before, it is not original in concept. Your series of random letters is a metaphor for a piece of media, but in order to be accepted by the audience it would at least have to follow grammatical, narrative, or artistic structure, it would not be original. I could go on, but I'd rather point you to a website called TV Tropes. It's a database of almost every franchise and media, broken down into its basic tropes and writing tools. You may be surprised to find that everything you like and look up is unoriginal about something in its ideas. However, this is not a bad thing because it is inescapable. If you want to be like TheWilczak and break The Matrix down into ideas and concepts, then of course it's unoriginal. But it's that recipe of unoriginal ideas blended together that make the unique stew. Therefore calling out the chef for using carrots and onions is silly.
It's not _deus ex machina._ Neo's death was set up in the second act by the Oracle's prophesy (if he chose to save Morpheus' life at the price of his own). And his death and resurrection were set up by the Oracle's prophesy for Trinity. *1)* This was first touched upon in Trinity's and Neo's conversation _en route_ to the Oracle. *2)* It was later revisited while they were making their escape through the train station's pay phone. *And 3)* Trinity proclaimed her love to the dead man who would become the One, but who could only become the One once he was resurrected from the dead. This structure follows the rule of 3 highlighted in the video. By its very nature, _deus ex machina_ is an arbitrary plot device, without set-up, which is meant to resolve a conflict. There was plenty of set-up in Neo's ascension to the One.
The Isaiahnator "because it was prophesied" is the oldest deus ex machina in the book. Everything else you mentioned is just additives of how formulaic. Such true love winning the day, contrived prophesies, and chosen ones defended by plot armor
I agree that prophesies are typically used as _deus ex machina,_ but not when they serve in conjunction with a hero's journey, because it's the hero's choices and personal development that drive the plot forward, and, therefore, makes the prophesy come true. In this sense, a prophesy can be seen merely as a template for the hero to follow, not as a substitute for logical plot development. One part, though, where I did feel there was narrative determinism (supported by plot armor), was when Cypher was killed by a severely injured Tank, just as Cypher was getting ready to kill Neo. Neo's survival was based on sheer chance, or - as you put it - "because it was prophesized". I mean, hell, Cypher even killed two shipmates like they were nothing, but then proceeded to "monologue" his victory speech to Trinity, buying her, Neo and Tank precious time.
The Isaiahnator the hero's journey is literally a formula. Saying it doesn't fit the troupe because it follows the most overused formula verbatim only furthers my point that it's formulaic.
The matrix is actually an alien darkship controlled by alien vampires. Metallic starships like the Enterprise are primitive. This darkship is completely absent of light, warmth, love, life, joy, magic, meaning, beauty and wisdom. Greed (absence of love) aka. "hate" is what propels this darkship and makes the vampires feel alive. The matrix rule encourages ugly (heavy) words like sanction, starve, torture, murder and bomb... because these ugly (heavy) words suck the "vital forces" (joy, beauty and harmony) out of human beings (hearts/love) with their ignorance (absence of love) aka. "greed". Uplifting words with light and truth (love) are blasphemous to the vampires (ego/greed) who pilot the matrix. Because light and truth causes the alien vampires (ego/greed) great pain and suffering. That is why words like trust, compassion, understanding, "care for all" and "green new deal" cause the vampires (ego/greed) such misery. The anti-love, anti-christ called Count (ing) Dracula (Trump) is the commander of the darkship matrix. The anti-love, anti-christ called Count (ing) Dracula (Trump) and his crew of colorless counting corpses are using their darkship matrix to suck the joy out of life and devour the planet like a ravenous cancer. And they are "using" Jesus (love) to artificially manufacture "entitlement' to do it. The truth said with the wrong intent is worse than all that lies invent.
To quote Lilly Wachowski “There’s a critical eye being cast back on Lana and I’s work through the lens of our transness. This is a cool thing because it’s an excellent reminder that art is never static. And while the ideas of identity and transformation are critical components in our work, the bedrock that all ideas rest upon is love.”
Someone commented this and makes total sense: It wasn't love that that made him the one or anything like that. If you remember the Oracle tells Neo, "maybe you're waiting for the next life." He HAD to die to become the one. It was subtle but if you catch it makes Sense
It could be argued they are both the one. Smith is there to balance the equation. There cannot be the one without the opposite. The point is that the one was not supposed to fight Agent Smith indeed Agent Smith was never supposed to get powerful enough the matrix was supposed to be rebuilt. It is why the machines needed neo to fight and face Smith since only then could they use Neo to destroy him and rebuild the matrix
Just because you dont like a plot point doesnt mean the movie wasnt ground breaking. The action, the CGI, the philosophy in an action story were all groundbreaking. Also he came back to life because of rules.
YouWouldntLikeItWhenIDrinkMilk He was just saying how this really cliche point isn't a good thing in the overall groundbreaking film. We all know the reasons why it's groundbreaking.
Wow. The amount of people who hate the idea of the power of love being able to break rules is astounding. What kind of sad lives are these people living that this fundamental idea constantly prevalent in our every day lives has no place in story-telling?
I was generalizing but I do see your point as well. It is actually cliche in the Matrix. I was referring to similar complaints of films. I'd actually prefer if a movie could just skip the damn love story once in a while. Matrix would have been just fine without it. Although it's sequels kind of revolve around it
This is an entertaining film but silly. Love conquering death is deus ex machina. If that's what it takes to stymie the rules, then send only one half of each pair of lovers into the matrix and keep the other out in order to kiss away death. Oh, and Keanu Reeves' acting is excruciatingly wooden. The chemistry between Neo and Trinity seems forced.
Honestly, who cares? Every Frame of Painting has been gone for a year, it's almost pointless to mention them. And if a video is genuinely insightful, why does it matter if the format is similar to another? And FYI, this video has very little in common with EFOP stylistically and ESPECIALLY content wise. Just watch, or NOT watch the video
If this is another video of a cis guy missing all of the queer stuff going on in a film by two trans siblings, then I'm going to flip my shit. Edit: YUP THAT'S EXACTLY WHAT IT WAS! proceeds to flip her shit
Queer stuff in the matrix??? Okay, let me put on my transgender goggles and rewatch the film. (After watching the film again) Hmm, that weird, the movie has nothing to do with transgenderism. Seriously, go home with that bs.
@Ana Person Don't mind the assholes. The queer subtext is quite obvious when you're not transphobic (unconsciously or not). One of them even said the wachowskis weren't trans then, as if changing gender is a thing you decide overnight.
"weren't even trans when they made the movie" lol you mean they hadn't come out as trans when they made the movie but the trans symbolism is there in the film. Here's a few off the top of my head... -The rejection of assigned names and the creation of an identity with one's own chosen name. -The whole concept of "the question that drives us" is an experience particular to trans folk as many wonder if the very basis of their reality is in fact real, this reality coming crashing down when they wonder "am I a girl//boy?" -The character Switch who never has pronouns used in reference to has visible chest bindings in the mirror scene. Switch. Chest bindings. Like what an AFAB trans person would wear. -A pill to enter to "real" and free oneself from the Matrix. The Matrix in general is symbolic of oppressive patriarchal society and it's rigid rules on identity and mentality. In the later film the Animatrix there are even more nail on the head moments of trans imagery, such as during the "Second Renaissance" story there is a machine that passes as a human woman being beaten to death by humans and her very last words were "I'm real." The whole scene is reminiscent of violent murders of trans women who get visually identified as trans. Again this is all just stuff off of the top of my head and I haven't seen the film in a few years. The rest of the stuff is there, this queer element just adds another layer to a great film.
Right, which is why it dominated the box office and skyrocketed in popularity while effectively changing the way films have been made since. Hey I'm all for differing opinions but doing so appropriately means acknowledging what makes something successful and respectfully disagreeing. The Matrix was groundbreaking because of the ideas and themes it presented and how well it was composed into the film while oozing with style. You can believe it to be average if you want but it is not an absolute outside of your mind and others who may share a similar opinion. And today's standards mean squat. Movies today are mostly crap with very few actual meaningful examples. Break neck paced editing, shaky cams, CGI dense shots, and protagonist throws dumb down films and ultimately bore me as a viewer.
Everyone misses the subtext and allegorical nature of the film. The film is about coming out as queer in a cisnormative heteronormative patriarchal society. I mean the film is by two trans siblings so like come on. Here's an article on it. www.themarysue.com/decoding-the-transgender-matrix-the-matrix-as-a-transgender-coming-out-story/
Justin Jimenez i just found it a bit dull. All the characters were boring. I don't think anyone smiled throughout the entire film. Took itself far too seriously

i don't know who you are, but you dont know jack shit about the matrix
that final scene easily makes trinity the second most important character of the movie
What is the horror movie at 0:42?
**sigh** I fucking love this movie.
greatest film of all time
Free WILL Wins and is the strongest. Pay Attention to the end when the new rule is introduced. Told you 👍
They need to relaunch this again
I get that the prophecy was that Neo would fall in love with Trinity because he died (she would fall in love w/ a dead man), and since Neo came back to life, the rules were broken and the agent died. But why DID Neo come back to life?
Because he was waiting for something.
Well explained👍🏻
How did I only just now find you and how do you only have 113k subs lol
Just wondering if you could touch more on the Neo/Smith fight scene, and how Neo visually through fighting and not words, becomes more accepting of his role as The One.
The best science fiction movie breaking their own rules is looper. The time traveling time lines lost all sense at almost the beggining, but that doesn't matter.
That's because the narrative is more about realizing that in 30 years, he's still the same selfish man. Not about time travel and the rules were never deemed much importance.
The paradoxes this movie creates are one thing, but if they apparently don't give a fuck about these rules than they should keep up with it and not have them affect the plot just when they need to (cough* the ending *cough)
Also, just to write out how ridiculous the whole concept is.
If he kills himself, his old self could never have come back,
if his old self never came back, he could not have killed himself ("But Goji" you might say "perhaps that's why the movie earned the name Looper huh)
well, would be all fine and good, but then you consider that if he kills himself, the whole plot couldn't even be happening as his old self was involved in the creation of the rainmaker.
0:42 name of movie?
Or, depending on your point of view, "cheating".
I don't suppose you decided to do a piece on The Matrix because it just came onto US Netflix? ;)
nope, I've had this vid on the back burner for quite some time. These things take alot of time to develop.
The Oracle tells him that he's got the gift, but that he's waiting for something. Perhaps the next life. I'd argue it's this prophecy, not Trinity's, is what brings him back to life, or maybe he never died. But saw something in the void, between The Matrix and the real world.
I KNEW YOU WERE GOING TO END IT WITH *THAT* I JUST KNEW IT
Best bullet time
Yo fuck that tall man moment from It Follows. Came for Matrix-related review, didn't expect to shit myself. :'D
Dunkirk is the best movie I seen since The Matrix.
then go watch more movies
You've been missing out on a lot of great films since then.
It must be your first day on the internet.
the horror film at 42 seconds was It Follows
This type of complicated philosophy is was caused the last two movies to be box office flops. They should have kept it simple like the first one.
The Matrix (1999)
The Matrix: Reloaded (2003)
The Matrix: Revolution (2003)
20 years
Fanastic video. I need this shit faster!
Shame they broke all the rules in Reloaded and Revolutions. Biggest dissapoint for a huge fan.
whoa!
One major rule The Matrix actually did break: being original. Watch the director's cut of Dark City (1998).
Originality isn't as important as execution.
I know TV tropes, love the site.
The Oracle told him he had the gift he just didnt understand its why she said not too bright.
Why doesn't Neo die when he fails to make the first roof jump?
Training simulation?
In the movie Inception, if you’re shot and killed you just wake up from the dream.
wooah
wow
How is a total deus ex machina a good thing?
Except it's not formulaic. It DEFIES that very formula.
Dat Pac-Man Sound.
The fundamental flaw
Like Siri
I thought he became the one because of what he learned in "spoon is not real" scene.
Neo is not the one it's Mr. Smith is the one.
i like the idea but using "love" is so goddamn annoying.
Christopher Nolan be like:
uSiNg "lOvE" iS sO gOdDaMn aNnOyiNg
To quote Lilly Wachowski “There’s a critical eye being cast back on Lana and I’s work through the lens of our transness. This is a cool thing because it’s an excellent reminder that art is never static. And while the ideas of identity and transformation are critical components in our work, the bedrock that all ideas rest upon is love.”
great.
This is still no excuse for lazy writing...
Someone commented this and makes total sense:
It wasn't love that that made him the one or anything like that. If you remember the Oracle tells Neo, "maybe you're waiting for
the next life." He HAD to die to become the one. It was subtle but if you catch it makes Sense
Think of it as a connection to the living - that's what kept him from dying.
wow :D
yesss
Smith is the ONE.
Am I the only one that can barely hear the movie characters' lines?
If Neo was Forrest, he would have run.
LMAO!
if he was Forrest than he would be Sleepless in Seattle not on an excellent adventure or bogus journey.
Cool video. I don't believe Neo is the one though. It's pretty clear if you watch the other two films, that the one is actually agent Smith.
I don't see how Neo coming back to life through the power of love in a movie called "groundbreaking" can be seen as a good thing.
Justin Jimenez love does have its place in film, the way the matrix used it though is cliche, we aren't living sad lives because we think this.
I was generalizing but I do see your point as well. It is actually cliche in the Matrix. I was referring to similar complaints of films. I'd actually prefer if a movie could just skip the damn love story once in a while. Matrix would have been just fine without it. Although it's sequels kind of revolve around it
Neo is not the one, smith is.
shit......... why didnt you say SPOILERS?!?!?!?!
"He is the one."
pethORa
THE POWER OF LOVE BITCHEZ!
You are not everframesapainting. Get your own style.
Edit: YUP THAT'S EXACTLY WHAT IT WAS!
proceeds to flip her shit
please fuck off with your fake agenda.
Queer stuff in the matrix???
Okay, let me put on my transgender goggles and rewatch the film.
(After watching the film again)
Hmm, that weird, the movie has nothing to do with transgenderism.
Seriously, go home with that bs.
How does anyone watch this movie and only focus on "queer stuff"? The Wachowski's weren't even trans when they made this movie.
-The whole concept of "the question that drives us" is an experience particular to trans folk as many wonder if the very basis of their reality is in fact real, this reality coming crashing down when they wonder "am I a girl//boy?"
-The character Switch who never has pronouns used in reference to has visible chest bindings in the mirror scene.
Matrix is a very average sci fi action film nothing special
by today's standard yes, but back then it was ground breaking!
Ana Person it's written by two transgenders so it must be about transgenderism? Hmm...
