I must sadly say... Star Wars Episode I (I was trying to convince myself that it didn´t suck... couldn´t make it)
I remember walking out of the cinema with my best mate Tom (still is, 20 years later) and both of us rendered speechless for the entire 40 minute walk home. Repeated abortive attempts at making sentences like "what the", "what about", "how did" interspersed with "woooah" and "shiiiit" and "fuuuuuck". I was the right age for this to probably always remain the biggest mindfuck of a movie I'll ever watch.
haha, that's awesome. I was so sad that I never saw it in theaters. I just showed up at school and heard my friends talking about how amazing this new movie was. But I *do* remember finally seeing it when it came out on video and having _my mind blown_.

I was 16 years old, and I saw it alone on a Wednesday, midday. When I walked out into the bright, cold, concrete, empty work day sidewalk, with no pedestrians, and few cars, it was literally like stepping back into the Matrix. It was a startling visual shift that made me question whether any of this was real, in a tangible way. I literally had to sit down on the sidewalk and close my eyes for a few minutes. The movie and actual reality had crashed together in an overwhelming way, and my life was never the same. Greatest experience I've ever had.

One of my favourite foreshadowing moments from "The Matrix", is when the audience is fist introduced to Neo, he's fast asleep at his computer desk wired up with a headset.

Beautiful detail. I knew he was "asleep" because his was passive in life, but wow, this makes is so much more intriguing.
The crazy part is there’s almost no scene in the script that has a character dumping exposition for longer than two pages which is mind blowing to me
They made up for that with the Architect in the second one

I feel like the importance of delivering a satisfying answer is underappreciated. Finally seeing what Morpheus meant with "You wont have to" was beautifully shown between Neo first dodging bullets (when he wasnt yet ready) and then, in the climax, not having to dodge them at all.
Compare to Game of Thrones Season 8.
Compared to most of J J Abrams’ writing career.
It's definitely a rare skill. Too many books, movies, games remain lazily ambiguous when it comes to set ups like that.
Matt Khourie - I think it’s down to actually having a story to tell.
SamWallace, and Matt Khourie, I wonder if that's due to, in part of uncertainty of cancellation/dying. In a series at least, particularly in the beginning, or establishing the work/series.
Whoever casted Hugo Weaving for that role deserves an Oscar, he elevates the trilogy in ways that are truly hard to explain.
Awale Drezzy I adore his “break from protocol” during the interrogation scene. The way he enunciates the word ‘hate’, as if he’s never used it before. Reminds me of I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream.

He made three other movies (essentially) in the same year. In them, he played a several thousand year old character who was also part angel. And nailed it. The fact that he didn't win Best Supporting Actor for either The Matrix or any of the LotR movies is just definitive proof of how bullshit the Oscars are.
The Matrix carefully crafted an entertaining action movie while capturing the phobia and fears of people as they entered a new century and as technology rose. It's truly a lightning in a bottle and I love any and all discussions on this movie.

And how the Matrix works on a surface level and a metaphorical level. On the surface it's an awesome action movie, and it has huge metaphorical depths to plumb, like how language keeps us all constrained and controlled. Or the book Neo hides a disc in is "Simulacra and Simulation" by Jean Baudrillard

I remember the very first teasers for the film in England. They weren't even teasers. They were a flash of a question on a black screen for less than 2 seconds between other adverts on television. The question simply asked "What is the Matrix?"
I was hooked before I knew any more than that.

The full-length theater trailer was similarly brilliant: it used carefully-selected, brief clips from the movie set 2 a dark, eerie soundtrack highlighted w/ appropriate sound effects 2 give audiences just the barest impression of what The Matrix might B like, w/o giving away the ending or even revealing any plot points--
Morpheus: Have you ever had a dream that was so real ... ?
[Cut to a quick sequence of extremely short movie clips from The Matrix, including a split-second excerpt from the scene where Neo falls off a building after failing his 1st jump]

Based on this 1 trailer, U could easily conclude that The Matrix was going 2 B a psychological sci-fi horror flick. Contrast this 2 the trailer that aired on TV, which (like so many modern movie trailers) gave *way* too damn much away about the movie.

20 years and still one of the most influential films ever made.
One day, someone came over and handed me a VHS movie and said: "watch this!". He had a look on his face as if he's seen a ghost. I looked at the cover and it was nothing but four people standing with guns and way too many sunglasses.
I said: "what's it about?"
He said: "watch this!".
I said: "Okay, I'll watch it later".
He said: "watch this! Now!".
So I go the the VCR and I put the movie in. The movie started and not a single word was uttered between us till it ended. After it ended, I turned my head towards him. Now we both had the same look on our faces.
The movie was The Matrix. The mind was blown.
lemme guess -- soon, you both turned to two other people and said "watch this!" handing them each a copy of the matrix on VHS.. they said "I'll watch later" and you both said "watch this! Now!" and there you were, sitting with a new friend not uttering a single word between you two until it ended.. but, after it ended, your friend turned their head towards you - now you both had the same look on your face.. soon after, they both each turned to two other people and said ... and so forth and so on.. until 95 times later, you and 39,614,081,257,132,168,796,771,975,167 other people had shared copies of the matrix on VHS, and it had been copied over and over so many times, the video quality faded into nothingness, just a buzz of static.. frames of bullet-time jumping in and out of existence.. and there you were sitting in your room when someone came over and handed you a VHS movie and said "watch this!" .. he had a look on his face as if he'd seen a ghost. Alas, you'd known better.. or so you'd thought, so you said "Okay, I'll watch it later" but he insisted: "watch this! Now!", so you, bemused, took the VHS from his trembling hands, slid it into the VCR, and pressed Play. Instantly, a wall of static hit you, flowing up and down the screen and filling everything in your eyes with nothing but the faint cosmic microwave buzz of..
the matrix. Unfortunately, no one could be told what the Matrix was. You had to see it for yourself. but once you saw it, you'd look like you'd seen a ghost since The Matrix is the world that has been pulled over your eyes to blind you from the truth

Agreed. The Matrix is a damn-near perfect movie if one ever existed.
This movie has it all - great story line, philosophical questions to keep us pondering for years, great CGI, enough action, soundtracks, acting, etc. This is what makes it perfect.
There are many other movies that are near perfect, but they all seem to be missing something - either a great story line, but some scenes are too drawn out, or at some point too slow for viewers to stay engaged or sountracks are poor or something else. But in this movie all aspects of filming have been carefully thought through and well executed.

I remember leaving the movie theatre feeling like a superhero myself. I vividly remember walking home with electricity in my spine. That's how affecting the film was for my teenage self! 😄
I remember when I was young and impressionable, and one of my friends insisted, "You HAVE to see the Matrix!" Hesitant, I responded, "Why? What is it?" and, of course, his answer was "No-one can be told what The Matrix is. You have to see it for yourself."
Now, of course anybody can indeed use their words to describe the premise & plot of the film, but I'm still glad that I got to go in blind and get my mind blown by this movie.
The Matrix truly was a breathtaking movie. The film was a showcase of the Wachowski Brother's brilliance. Keanu Reeves also donated a decent portion of his earnings to the staff that did the CGI and special effects. No other celebrity does that, Keanu is a one of a kind person, very admirable and respectable.

This movie is still one of my favorite movies of all time. It's at least a top-five for me.
It's in that group of very brave films that where done right before 9/11 and our balls where cut off.

I wished the Wachowskis remembered these tips and lessons before making Jupiter Ascending.
Ajer Qureshi to be fair, I’m pretty sure that movie was butchered in the editing process.
Editing? Um no. The film failed before the first frame was shot because the script was subpar.
So weird how the Wachowskis haven't been able to reproduce the quality of The Matrix Trilogy. Maybe all the hormone therapy dulled their creativity?

There’s a conspiracy that they stole the idea for the matrix from another lady. It was half terminator half matrix.
Thats because they are not the Wachowski brothers anymore, they lost their identity.
It was the matrix movie that made .e start question everything. It started my awakening process back in 1999. I'm 36 now and on a whole different level because of this film. Thank you for sparking my higher level of consciousness.
Questioning everything isn't great when you don't know how to judge the quality of the answers you find.
I made a channel because of that awakening effect these films have on people. The deeper layers miss the herd, but for those who desire to question, everything... it let you know: "You are not alone."
It's interesting how Office Space, Fight Club and The Matrix all came out within the same years. All three movies are about rebellion against the system or something else controlling our lives and us being free.

A neat thing about science fiction in general is that it’s able to create existential mysteries through different takes on reality. In the best SF, that reality unfolds and reveals itself over the course of the story. This sets up exactly that desire to know.

The video I watched before this randomly was a ted video about deja vus...I've never been so shocked about a comment ever! I think there's something wrong...
Its the 20 year anniversary & suddenly everyone wants to pretend they know what the Matrix is. This video was good, but many are not.
If you ever get the chance to read the early shooting script of The Matrix I highly recommend it. The way that they describe some of the visuals a master class in how to give a description of action and environment the finest I have ever read, but you also learn about the cut sub-plot that deals with Neo being the fifth 'the ONE' that he has found. It makes the story a thousand times better and it was a shame it was cut from the final film.

@@hikikomicklori9290 It's implied in that Neo isn't the first "the One" and that they finally hit the Jackpot with Neo. It's more Morpheus was stubborn on his beliefs and never gave up.
The matrix did back in 99 what Episode I should´ve done... amaze us... I went to an avant premiere in La Paz (Bolivia) I didn´t know what to expect... by the first 5 minutes I was in awe... by the middle I was so blown away... by the end of it (as a RATM fan) I was just blown away... I couldn´t wait to see it again. And I did, about 10 times at the theater and god knows how many more at home... One of the best ever.
Not only one of the most groundbreaking films of all time, but one of the greatest of all time! Recently rewatched this, and it truly is a masterclass on every level. It was an action film, it was a sci-fi film, it was a martial arts film, it was a western film and it took all the best elements of those genres and delivered something totally new and unique. And the way they tie off what feels like almost insignificant things, frightens me by how great that was. Then of course the choreography, set design, kickarse soundtrack, and more. I saw this in cinema when it first came out and it blew my mind in every way possible. Phenomenal filmmaking.
My brother, this is one of my favorite movies. Your brilliant exposition on the art of exposition just got you a new patron.

A Matrix themed video from Lessons From the Screenplay deserves a like even before we watch it.
That's really cool, I have not seen exposition in The Matrix explained like that before. It had quite the impact on culture when it came out, proof of the film's quality.
I feel like it's the millenial version of star wars. In that it captured the zeitgeist of the time and every action film made after it was influenced by it, and it's just one of those films that neatly everybody loves. Obviously the sequels to star wars were better than the matrix sequels, but that first film was very similar, it was like a bomb was dropped and movies and games afterward were completely changed by it.
The first time I saw the matrix was on my seventh grade winter break when I was thirteen years old. I saw it with two of my older cousins. My mom came down to the basement where we saw it when we were on the scene where Neo gets the tracker bug thing removed. She yelled at my cousins for showing me the movie, and then we continued watching it about twenty minutes later at a lower volume.
I remember seeing the movie in a theater and really enjoying it. I also remember everyone in the theater laughing at Keanu a couple times, especially the "whoa" comment after Morpheus jumps to the next building. It was like a Bill and Ted callback. Now he's very believably kicking ass in the John Wick films.

The Matrix is a brilliant film through and through and this sums up part of why. Not just the action. Or the effects. Or the soundtrack. Or the too often copied style. But the pacing and the manner in which things build and unfold. It's a film I have a hard time avoiding when I see it because each story beat draws you in and delivers. The mystery of the beginning. The revelation of the real world. The training. The heroes in trouble. Neo rising to the challenge. The amount of cool ideas crammed into one film is remarkable. It's no wonder it remains a modern classic 20 years later.
Yep, there’s a reason why this is still my all time favorite movie. Regardless of what people like Doug Walker say.

My friend and I saw this movie 9 times in the movie theater when it came out.
I knew you couldn’t possibly talk about The Matrix on RUclips without mentioning Patrick H Willems. And I’m glad you didn’t! Great job!!
That segue into Skillshare was masterful
I was 5 or 6 when I first saw this movie (I have awesome parents) when it aired on TV. Shortly after, when we got it on VHS, it was one of the 2 movies I brought with us when we went vacationing to Hilton Head Island. Later that year, we got our first DVD player and I think _The Matrix_ was one of the first 10 movies we got on DVD.
Obviously, being that young, I had NO IDEA what the movie was about or what was going on; all I knew is that it was awesome. But, of course, as you get older, you learn more about yourself, about storytelling and filmmaking, and how to perceive the events transpiring on the screen. And I do not exaggerate when I say _The Matrix_ is my #5 all-time favorite movie. And this video is one of the reasons why _The Matrix_ is one of my go-to examples on how to convey exposition through building mystery and intrigue. Something a lot of films fail to do, sadly.
Michael as Morpheus at the end is my favorite thing on the internet this year.
It was November 2001. I was 11 year old kid, just a month before turning 12. Windows XP was just released. My father promised buying me a PC, and we were waiting for it to be delivered. At the time you couldn't just walk into a store a buy one, you had to order it so they can build it, so it took some time for it to be delivered.
Because it was cold outside, PC needed to be brought inside the house to warm up first, you couldn't just plug it in and start it. Longest half of hour in my life. When it was finally assembled, the guy turn on the PC and was showing what it can do to my clueless father. He said "You can even run DVD movies inside. I'll show you." He starts a movie in Windows media player, and that dialogue in the beginning starts. English isn't my first language, so I just sat there and watch at some lady getting arrested and kicking that police officer in slow motion. What an experience that was.
Well I certainly picked an excellent time to binge watch the entire LFTS playlist for the 23rd time
This movie always will have a special place for me. My highschool philosophy exam had the subject ' man and machine' , and it fired of with a text about the Matrix. I had so much fun making that exam Also I had a 88/100 , which added to the fun :)
The matrix was a great movie done at exactly the right time. I was in high school when it was released. There was little to no buzz before the movie was released and I remember people saying "you must go see it, I can't explain it." With Y2K looming and the height of the dotcom era the public was in a state very receptive to a piece of scifi and technology. The movie started incredibly strong and every movie after the Matrix had to have "bullet-time" for a while; in fact, so much so that it got really annoying. I remember NBC Nightly News had a segment where they were talking about college courses being taught on the symbolism and philosophy of the Matrix. This movie was everywhere.
So cool to read the comments and see how every one has a special memory with this movie, makes me some how feel connected to all these random people I've never met. Good movie.

It's just, so amazing. I didn't watch in '99 but when I did watch it it became, instantly my favourite film. It just, resonated with me. As it probably did withmany. I still get excited whenever I'm about to watch it.

well for almost all movies the answer is either at home or at the theater. 99% of the time
frank unodostres not me! I was at scout camp, and my friend snuck in a DVD player with a pirated copy of the film. Watching it in the middle of the night with headphones on in the small tent was a surreal experience.

unlike many other videos on youtube trying to benefit from the popularity of the matrix, this one great masterpiece is really something valuable.

My best movie of all time. I watched it in highschool on a Friday evening, and later at night, I think I stayed 2hrs without sleep just amazed on what I just watched. The following day was discussions with my classmates about it. Damn. I think I've watched it 100 times. The way they reveal information by showing it rather than narrating it is something I never thought would be quite compelling. And it was the first movie to convince me that action scenes can be done right.
Every Computer Scientist i've ever interviewed has said that their favorite movie is the Matrix. There are so many fundamental concepts from Computer Science that are personified in it like abstraction (the oracle), polymorphism (copies of agents), and inheritance (knowledge download). Love this movie!
You're absolutely right. The Matrix was one of those "where we you" moments. I remember going to the theater to see another movie, my cousin walks out, walks back in and tells me that we should watch the matrix. The theater was packed so we sat on the steps. The part that was playing was the black cat Deja vu scene and even that late in I was absolutely amazed at what I was seeing.
Enjoy Matrix Reloaded but I can see the issue people have with it.
The film never makes us want the exposition especially when it comes to the Architect.
I think the architect scene goes to show that there’s a limit to how complicated you can make the exposition. No matter how much you want to understand it, it’s just too dense and obfuscated to grasp on your first watch. Hell, it’s been 16 years since Reloaded and people still don’t entirely agree on what that character was saying.
Actually, the second one, compared to the third one, is a much better sequel. The main mistake with the 'Reloaded' was the wrong depiction of 'The Architect'. We were all expecting a different incarnation of him...

Patrick Willems does a pretty good "rewrite" of both Reloaded and Revolutions.
@@jasonmckellar7750 He's the only character whose statements are absolute. The Architect and the Oracle conversations allow you fully decide what you believe, but so many did not watch the Animatrix so a lot of the audience missed a step and violently reject the deconstruction phase of reloaded. & almost everyone misses the gold light:

I'm forever jealous of those who got to see this in a theater opening weekend with no idea of what they were about to see. My first time seeing it, I already knew the main story, which I wouldn't say makes the film any less amazing (it is one of my favorite films of all time) and it's always a treat to watch it. Watching The Matrix for the first time is like listening to Sgt Peppers - mind blowing and unforgettable but something you can’t experience again.

To me, the ENTIRE TRILOGY was a wonderful masterpiece. It has been a part of the inspiration for my own screenplay (which has been under development for a few years). And I can't WAIT to unleash it. :)

This is probably one of the movies I most want to go back and watch again, for the first time. Just blank slate. Going in knowing nothing. That experience was a gamechanger for me.
My friend had seen it, and his only explanation was "they are hackers in space". I hadn't seen trailers or anything when I went in, and my mind was blown. Both at how a person could think it was hackers in space, but mostly by the movie itself. Just new and different in so many ways.
Still one of the best movies ever made.

First off, finally back to a movie I've seen. Unfortunately, there's a bunch of these videos I haven't watched because I haven't seen the movie yet. Secondly, I'm a little disappointed because I thought this would have been the perfect topic for a video on Inception, which is one of my favorite movies. If you ever do Inception, I'm not sure what other topic you could do for it that would be as perfect for that movie.

I’m grateful for the time taken here to shine a light on this masterpiece, because for me that’s what it is, a Masterpiece. When people ask me what my favorite movie is, which feels almost impossible to answer, I can only return to The Matrix. I can’t imagine another movie being made that could grab me as profoundly as The Matrix did and does to this very moment. I just watched it again last night and I never tire of its ability inspire me with awe.
Did we really need a sequel to the Matrix? Nah but what we got from those sequels were pretty good, it had a beginning, middle and end.

@@damonmoney4474 It makes sense in hindsight, you can see it as a coming out as trans movie.
@@BiscuitAWitch I still refer to that movie when trying to explain what dysphoria is.. it captures it really well (whether it was subconscious or not for them while making it, and like it took longer for Lilly to realise she was trans too) I think.
The way the world is subtly wrong once Neo is woken up, the literal Agents Of The System using the name you don't associate with anymore just to make a point, how people can look at Neo a bit funny on the street before he gets his confidence at the end. Trinity, having been awoken for much longer, empathises with Neo and also wants to make the transition easier.
(Also in some versions of the screenplay Switch was going to have been trans, so it was obviously on their mind in some ways when writing it. Switch was to have realised the HRT etc didn't do anything to her body in the real world, and they had no means to produce it with the humans' limited resources. I believe it was taken out because getting different actors would've added extra complexity to the already complex script, and also added production cost.)
I like it because the film makes the audience understand and believe in those feelings and situations, rather than the age old "so imagine if you woke up tomorrow and suddenly felt like your body wasn't right" talk. Because of the power of metaphor, I guess. Like... any number of "misfits" like the movie for some of these reasons, but I do genuinely believe it maps more strongly onto trans experiences specifically. Even though there are wider similarities in a sort of X-men way too.

It's a good question. We're not talking about addressing them in the present, but talking about their past work. No-one is the same person they were in the past; the film is a creation of their younger selves, it would be different if they made it now.
Are all the old reviews and commentaries wrong or insensitive for using the only names they had? Of course not. Therefore how can it be wrong to talk about these past people by their *actual* names (and identities) at that time? Using their new names in reference to their past identities is confusing, misleading and inaccurate.
@Miro Kai yes but we don't call Russia the URSS of 1960, even if now is called Russia... Your example is against what you say.
Also in the text of the film the name of the directors is not the one of today, so if someone wants to be scientifically accurate shouldn't use the new ones, maybe them inside parentesis
@Miro Kai we are talking about something in the past, ofc that if they make a film now you have to use their actual names, but with something in the past when they weren't even of the same sex of today using the actual name isn't so simple. Also the name written on the films is more important than anything. If you use their actual names and in the film is written the old names, you generate confusion.
Making another example, if your Lady Gaga decide to use another name today, to adress the previous albums when she was called Lady Gaga on them you have to use Lady Gaga, or at least specify that. If you don't use it, you are not correct.
We are not talking about emotions, don't answer to this problem using emotions.

holy crap! you're right! i remember exactly where i was and what i was doing when i first saw this movie as a kid back in 1999. but i also know why: no other movie has ever come even close to seriously question the nature of my own existance like this one did. it was so creepy and terrifying in its own unique way. it never fully went way actually.
