Exploring the Philosophy of The Matrix Trilogy

- Perennial philosophy is ever present throughout The Matrix Trilogy, this video essay aims to explore that. It is defined as a “perspective in modern spirituality which views each of the world's religious traditions as sharing a single, metaphysical truth or origin from which all esoteric and exoteric knowledge and doctrine has grown”.
The trilogy has a whole often gets a bad rap, but I think that all three are incredible achievements, flawed, but beautifully ambitious in ways few films attempt. I explore just a few of the philosophical ideas touched on by The Wachowski's, and hopefully give you a reason to go back and watch them again with a new perspective.
A tremendous source when writing this video(a few quotes are pulled directly from it), is a documentary that you can watch on Vimeo called “Return to Source: Philosophy and The Matrix” that goes much deeper than I can in a short video, so if you want to learn more about the philosophy explored in the trilogy, it should be of great interest to you.

I find all 3 films to be terrific. I can easily look over the CG. Even with its flaws, they’re fascinating and very enjoyable films.
I totally agree. The CG is weird, it looks amazing at times, and then other times it looks AWFUL, but I can always enjoy all three films.
Always been a fan of the sequels, especially Revolutions.
For the longest time Revolutions was my least favorite, the older I get though, the more I love it.
The sequels are good popcorn flicks, that's it though.

I'm Hindu and I must say it was so nice to see you reciting from Hindu philosophy, lots of people don't know much about Hindu philopshy but I will say that the European Center for Research in Particle Physics (thg place where The Large Hadron Collider is) has a religious Hindu statue on its grounds. Which says a lot.
I was woefully ignorant of the religion before researching this video, but I have to say, I think the tenants and morals of the religion probably fall more in line with my own personal beliefs than any other I've come across, it's a beautiful religion with a lot of important structures for living a healthy and happy life. I wish more people had found this video, because I think it could lead a lot of people to studying more about it, but go figure that discussing religious philosophy isn't super popular on RUclips.

Very few movies come that are really ground-breaking and life changing in some ways. 'Matrix' is one of them (particularly the first part). I remember after watching this movie for the first time. I told my friend- "It is the best movie I have seen.". It not shows the filmmakers passion for presenting and making such a film but to give some thought provoking messages.
This video made me like the Second and Third Matrix movies.

great work but I can't believe you didn't mention Baudrillard's Simulacra and Simulation. This is, IMHO, without doubt the greatest philosophical influence on The Matrix - particularly the first film. There is even a reference to it in the film.
Heavy rains remind me of philosophy thanks to Matrix. I really wanted NEO and Smith to just sit down and have a deep conversation on philosophy in that final scene instead of battling. Something tells me smith knew much more.
This is one of the channels that gave me the courage to start my RUclips channel 9 months ago about self development. Now I have 1,739 subs and > 1k hours of watch time. I know it’s not comparable with others but I’m still proud I started because I’ve been learning so many lessons that I could haven’t learned without getting started in the 1st place.
I feel the sequels don't get the credit they deserve. the highway chase in the second part till this day still amazes me each time even after so many views. the way it builds up from the fight with the frenchman's thugs and how they have to separate so morpheus can rescue the keymaker, their subsequent fight with the twins in the parking lot that leads to them escaping in the sedan. the "never tell me the odds" (han solo) moment where morpheus tells trinity to go on the highway. how the agents come in to cause mayhem and the subsequent showdown with morpheus atop the freighter and the grand finale where neo comes in and catches them mid explosion. just absolutely so many things coming together in one of the greatest cinematic spectacles i've ever witnessed. yea they have their flaws but they more than make up for them with everything they get right.

My philosophy teacher always uses Matrix as the secondary example for Plato's Analogy of the Cave and, as you said yourself, a great watch to play "Where's Waldo?" in a philosophical way.

Neo wasn't choosing between Trinity and saving mankind. Knowing that entering the door that all the Ones before him had entered only would repeat the cycle of torment and imprisonment, the only real possibility to actually save and free mankind was to enter the other door. Hence making it both the morally and subjectively right choice for Neo.
Thank you for giving me even more of a reason to continually enjoy and appreciate The Matrix series. The Animatrix also possesses a wealth of philosophy to ponder and reflect on and is my favourite of the films.

I watch the matrix trilogy each year on new year holidays and find something new each year. I just rewind fighting/CGI scenes, the dialogue in this movies is phenomenal.

I remember when the box set came out on DVD, the 2 hour extras about the science and philosophy of the MATRIX films barely left my DVD player, and I think some of the Wilbur audio is excerpted from those. This video has compelled me to revisit some of the personal writings I wrote when the sequels came out. I remember writing this in depth inquiry into the debts the Wachowskis owed to GODEL ESCHER BACH and its exploration of Godel's Incompleteness Theorem through Neo and Smith, etc etc. Good times. This is the point of these movies, flawed as the second 2 are they hint at so many other things. There's potential for the remakes, but I cant imagine them hitting that potential in the slightest... even tho they may technically be better films

I certainly love The Matrix. I feel like it has become slightly underrated because the sequels weren't well recieved, but it really holds up as some great filmmaking.
The first one is without question the best IMO, but I still thoroughly enjoy the sequels for what they are.

As Quentin Tarantino said before, at the end of the first movie the neos journey as ‘the one’ is consolidated with the power of a god. After that there are no stakes, and so there is no reason to believe he could ever fail. The first matrix is my favourite film, but I argue there should have been no sequels... although that car chase in reloaded was badass

It's tough to say, I think you could interpret it in a lot of different ways, but to me the machines represent the force of opposition that naturally exists within all of us, some sort of metaphysical idea of the forces that push against us that we ourselves created. I could be talking out of my ass though.

In the first Matrix movie, Neo (Thomas Anderson at that point) grabs a floppy disc from a hollowed out copy of “Simulacra and Simulation” by Jean Baudrillard. The entire first movie is basically a play on that book’s themes.

Very good video. I have a page of Matrix related material, mainly dedicated to my fan edits of Reloaded and Revolutions. (Reloaded Remixed and Revolutions Remixed) I have wanted to make some videos examining the philosophy of the films myself.
In the most abrupt way I can summarize it the first film, as you pointed out, is about the question of Ontology. The Second film I would contend deals with Teleology, or the examination of purpose. And the third film examines the Existential Dilemma.

I think a lot of people who grew up working with computers or playing video games are more inclined to a sort of idealist metaphysics than people of say, the 19th and 20th century were. The concept of "software" and the fact that you can run the same program on different machines indicates that a program has an eternal, immaterial existence of some sort. If you wrote a program out in full on a sheet of paper and then typed it into a computer a hundred years from now, you could run the same program. This shows that "Idea", information, or mind actually does transcend the material used to manifest its presence, and must be said to exist in some sense. In an information-machine culture the phenomena which Pythagoras and Plato tried to describe is far more obvious than it was to scientists of the last couple centuries.
Excellent job with this analysis. Something to add, when you referenced the current matrix being only one of many versions. I noticed that you used the allegory of the cave from Plato. Do you think the "perfect" matrix is a reference to the Golden Age of man in Greek mythology? I mentioned this in my latest video about the matrix. I would love to see more Greek myths mentioned
I think it's entirely possible, I definitely didn't approach it from that angle when writing the video, but it wouldn't surprise me if that's what the Wachowski's intended. I'm not too well read on Greek mythology, but I'm sure there's a fair amount of it present in the trilogy.
Great video! You have yourself a new sub. On a personal note, I find it interesting how even though I'm not fond of religion to say the least, The Matrix movies appeal so much to me, even though they are filled with religious content. Makes me wonder. Is it the concept of religion itself that makes it so appealing?
Thanks for subscribing! I have to imagine so. For me, I don't follow any religion, but I find the stories fascinating. I think spirituality all around an interesting subject, and when it's explored in a movie(as long as it's not too preachy) I generally enjoy it.

One tiny little thing got in the way of full enjoyment: be careful with the sound volume. It got really low when you showed moments of the film, and reaaaaally high when the writer was explaining stuff at the end. I have no idea how this works, but I'm pretty sure you can tweak that out ;)

It's something I've been trying to improve, but sometimes the native audio is hard to increase without getting a lot of distortion, but I've been trying to find ways to fix that in later videos, I agree, it's a little distracting when the audio levels are inconsistent. Thanks so much!
A great (alternate) interpretation of the Matrix Philosophy. Although at present we live in worlds within worlds (due to the emergence of the internet), there is the blindness in humanity, in its inability to see the existence of the soul in the eternal world of the soul that exists beyond this (material) physical dimension. 'The matrix does have us all', as we spend infinite lifetimes making countless mistakes in our choices, in our search to reach nirvana and to be one with the light (in being enlightened) and find peace for eternity. N.S.
I only wish that the audio had smooth transitions between mic and film sound.

It's in the conversation with the architect. Great question, honestly. That conversation has really fast dialogue and hard to catch it all.
The fact that they are going to release Matrix 4 scrapes me and excites me at the same time
the concept/scenarios of the one and their encounters with the architect are similar to what happens in the movie snowpiercer. ive just noticed the similarities and i wonder if the creators for snowpiercer took inspiration from the matrix

It's amazing how much people take from these movies when they stop whining about CG effects and Keanu who, let's face it, deserves credit for supporting these kinds of off-beat films.
If you read this, you should check out Mark Passio's lecture on the matrix decoded.
The beauty of the matrix is how it is constructed of binaries. However, unlike most popular narratives the binary is not simply hope and despair, but hope and indifference.
Also if up for a 2nd question - why is the ship “Mark III” . Nebechanezzar was Babylon king in real life and there were a king I and King II before Babylon downfall. That I keep trying to figure out.

I see a lot of things when I search about Perennial Philosophy saying that it and the "Traditionalist School" are linked to Fascism, Aryanism, Neofolk, and Pagan Esoteric Ultranationalism, and Third Positionist politics.
Why is this? Was Julius Evolutionary just a bad egg that has tarred the name of Perinnialism. Or is this reflective of an underlying philosophy of Traditionalism?
What is the difference between Perinnialism and Fascism? And are there Perinnialists who denounce fascism, racism, and ultra-nationalism?
Linked? You can link any philosophy to inferior ideologies warping its universal principles into extremist views. These ideas miss the point of love, compassion and oneness of sentient beings and nature into one consciousness. Many wars and crimes have been made in the name of Christ, Buddha, and many others. Intellectual understanding is different than actually walking the path, undergoing the transformation that the perennial philosophy requires.
For a glorious work on the matter check out "The Perennial Philosophy" by Aldous Huxley, where he only considers enlightened people, not just intellectuals that go on and on slicing and dicing without having experienced it themselves.

I think if you watch all 3 Matrix movies in a row then I think it's more enjoyable and easier to understand.
I think the sequels play with the audience a little. It's easy to lose interest or believe that Neo is going to somehow save everyone. With so many other characters doubting. That's like the fans of the first Matrix being disappointed that the 2nd and 3rd movies were going to be the same as the first. But Neo does save everyone just not the way we were expecting. That's pretty close to a Christ like figure.
