    I know it seems like a very narrow thing to focus on in but that 'system failure' always stuck with me the way it was shown in the movie. Separating the m and the f. And once she explained it there, it made that 2 sec edit, I had recognised for years so full of meaning. Like a beautiful poem hidden in plain sight.

    You might find this interesting:
    When Belinda McClory auditioned for the role of "Switch", she was only going for half the role. The character was originally planned to be played by androgynous actors. In the real world, it would be played by a male actor and in the Matrix be represented in a female form, hence the name "Switch". Warner Brothers refined the idea and McClory ended up getting a single female role in both environments.

    I love how you used scenes/dialogue from the movie together with Lana's speech and let us figure out what different perspective is being discussed in this video, instead of explaining it to us yourself. It's a great example of giving a platform and letting the unprivileged speak for themselves. This is a wonderful video, thank you!

    • @Lin_Eileen
      @Lin_Eileen 2 года назад

      @Rey Río How does that change anything about society hating trans people existing? They were not given a platform they earned it through their creativity and they were white so definitely privileged but their white privilege gets undercut quite severely by their transness which is literally the point of The Matrix and it speaks to not only trans people but really everybody. The Matrix effects everyone and keeps us all slaves. The movie is from a trans pov yes but that doesn't mean you have to be trans yourself to identify with it.

Also, being able to listen the Wachowski's tell their story gave me some much needed insight and appreciation for what members of the trans community have to endure growing up, and how lonely and confusing that can be for someone. I hope they're happy and have been able to find a measure of peace after making the change.

    Thank you for titling your video 'A Different Perspective'
    and not saying 'A new perspective' or 'The Correct Perspective'. Cinema is art and the beauty of art is that it can be interpreted in many ways. The power is that one film, one scene, one picture, one piece of music or one sound can change our outlook on life to help us heal, or be motivated, or to change, or become stronger, or to get closure, or guidance or even to grieve.

    What's amazing about The Matrix is it's an allegory for so many systems of control or oppression. If you identify with the human's fight whether it's racism, sexism, classism, capitalism or whatever, you can live vicariously through Neo. It wasn't until I saw Sense8, the Wachowski's show which was very clearly a trans allegory and contains many similarities to The Matrix, that it became apparent that's what they were going for. Even if you don't wanna contemplate any deeper meanings, it's still one of the coolest, most enjoyable action, sci-fi movies ever made.

    Last year I rewatched The Matrix Trilogy and I kinda realized that it features a lot of parallels and hidden meanings/symbols about being transgender or transsexual, or anyone from the LGBT+ community.
    I knew "Sense8" was about that, and then as it is very similar to "Cloud Atlas", the latter is also about it, or has hidden meanings and parallels about it. So this inspired me to look at The Matrix as such, and I found a lot of those meanings, especially in the first two (Revolutions has barely any substance tbh).
    This made The Matrix even more interesting as it reveals just how personal it is to The Wachowski Sisters, and adds an even deeper layer to the film, that already had and will continue to have a lot of them.
    All my respect and love to The Wachowski Sisters, who don't really have the best career in directing, but made a few really special and unique films.

    While I loved your video essays, this new format you're experimenting with is interesting and poignant in its own way. Very interesting to see the way you're piecing together film and its "history" through the research you're doing and the "thesis" you approach every video. Keep it up!

    You can’t just perfectly layer Lana’s HRC award speech, scenes from the Matrix, and the Cloud Atlas Sextet and not expect me to start crying
    Thank you so much for making this video. While I personally knew most everything about this perspective going in (being trans and constantly following your favourite creators and their works certainly helps), from reading the comments it looks to be eye-opening to so many people. So, thank you, both for making me cry in this confused happiness and for showing so many people this for the first time
    If anyone’s interested, Sarah from on the channel _let’s talk about stuff._ is making a series that talks about each of the Wachowski films and analyses them according to certain reoccurring themes, including sexuality and transness -and also vore.- Only the first video is out so far, on Bound (1996), and I recommend everyone check it out if this kind of perspective interests them

    When I first watched the movie in 1999, it seemed to me to finally explain what it was, that I felt was wrong with the world all my live! So we live in a simulation and are enslaved by machines.
    Well, little did I know that it would take me another 9 years to realize that I am female and another 11 years to finally start transition. But only after I already had started transitioning, a good year later, I found hints that the real meaning the matrix could have broken to me was that of what are the signs of living a transgender life from the closet up to breaking the shell and becoming a beautyful butterfly. I managed it without the help of that Movie, but it startles me how close to the answer I always was since 1999. If only I've had had the key to decifer the message. Anyway, I got there on my own.

    The thing that made Batman v Superman suck
    so bad is the unnecessary stuff they added in like Doomsday. This movie had the potential to be a straightforward political thriller but they wasted a lot of screen time by adding unnecessary scenes that mess up the plot and tone of the film. See, there are beautifully shot, brilliantly written, emotionally impactful scenes which were what BvS had the potential to be as a film. But no, all we got were an f-load of subplots, useless characters, dumb motivations, and again, the Doomsday villain. Wouldn't it have been better if the film lived up to its title -- Batman v Superman?

    • @poweroffriendship2.0
      @poweroffriendship2.0 5 лет назад +3

      It would be better if Batman vs. Superman really had a sequel such as "The Death Of Superman" which featured Doomsday and such. But no. How in the world that comic went straight to BvS within a few minutes after the climax between Batman and Superman?

    • @lukaallismith
      @lukaallismith 5 лет назад +2

      Even with Doomsday it could have been at least decent. Batman should not kill. It saves the Martha scene. Sure the action may not be as good, but it saves a stupid part of the film.

    it says a lot about the wachowski's writing that they were able to craft the deeper life lessons from a narrow personal journey into the broad story about self overcoming that the matrix is. it is not about gender specifically but you can see the writers internal journey and questioning infuse the film with its philosophical weight. it is able to capture the process of self discovery without narrowing its audience or appeal, its a path we all walk after all. and while hers was one of gender, it can just as easily be about philosophy, self image, self acceptance, identity or growth. truly great stories provide frameworks for the audience to explore themselves with guidance and to that end the matrix is right on the money, and a truly great movie

    OMG! I had no idea this had happened. Movies like The Matrix that capture the zeitgest of a whole generation don't come along every day. To have transwomen on the shortlist of writers who have managed to do it, is significant. It somehow makes so much sense that it was a movie based on the experience of being transgender which captured the millennial zeitgeist perfectly.
