  • You have mastered techniques to take advantage of every drop in any enemy's guard, gaining the following benefits:
    When you hit a creature with an opportunity attack, the creature's speed becomes 0 for the rest of the turn.
    Creatures provoke opportunity attacks from you even if they take the Disengage action before leaving your reach.
    When a creature within 5 feet of you makes an attack against a target other than you (and that target doesn't have this feat), you can use your reaction to make a melee weapon attack against the attacking creature.

    I’m a moon Druid considering the sentinel feat specifically because our Paladin has taken the Mounted Combatant feat which seem to be really well synchronized. If the Paladin is riding me using Dire Wolf , he can force all attacks on me to target him, which should trigger an opportunity attack for me (with advantage due to Pack Tactics) which will drop the enemy’s speed to zero. Plus I now gain all the DEX save benefits.

  • @julianpearce218
    @julianpearce218 2 года назад +2

    OK, so far be it for me, a relative novice, to question the wisdom dispensed here, but I am going to anyway!
    Page 170 clause 3 (Section "Sentinel" starts on page 169) specifies that: "....you can use your REACTION to make a melee weapon attack against the attacking creature".
    Page 190 of the Player Handbook states:-
    "A reaction is an instant response to a trigger of some kind which can occur on your turn or someone else's. The opportunity attack, described later in this chapter, is the most common type of reaction. "
    So a reaction is not specifically an opportunity attack, although being able to make a melee weapon attack as a reaction, is indeed a valuable 'opportunity'? Therefore clause 3 does not automatically trigger clause 1? This seems intentional otherwise clause 3 would be stated before clause 1 OR would specify "opportunity attack" (An opportunity attack IS specifically a type of reaction)
    The section covering reactions goes on to state:-
    "IF the reaction interrupts another creature's turn, that creature can continue it's turn right after the reaction". Surely the word INSTANT [in the first paragraph describing a reaction] does imply that a reaction would interrupt a creature's attack on an ally? Where in the Player Handbook does it state that the creature's attack would be resolved before the sentinel feat?
    It seems to me that a sentinel feat would not (and should not) automatically prevent an ally from being attacked. A glancing blow would not be enough to prevent the creature attacking. HOWEVER a nat-20 or a killing blow should surely be enough to protect your ally?
    By similar reasoning, clause 2 should not automatically trigger clause 1 (even though clause 2 does specifically state opportunity attack). If you attempt to run past my tank fighter, within my reach and I deal you a significant hit, you might consider me a better target or at least stop to defend yourself against my attack (speed 0)? Conversely, a miss or glancing blow from me would probably not deter you from your originally intended target?
    Ultimately I always believe that, in any given situation, it is for the DM to make the call. However guidance before the event helps prevent players from attempting stupid stuff that a DM would not (or should not) ever allow! Which is why I am surprised by your comment about dragons?
    Taking out a bat or small bird (in low flight) simply because a reaction melee weapon attack triggers speed 0? Maybe, but a fully grown dragon? I find it hard to believe any DM would allow that? Perhaps if the sentinel feat triggered an incredibly lucky nat-20? Even then, taken out of low flight, the dragon might plough a huge trench, but it would most likely still get up in an awful bad mood!

    Polearm Master is no joke (currently using it in a long one-shot with a glaive and loving it). here is a combo that works well with it
    1. Variant Human (polearm master feat right off the bat)
    2. Barbarian, Ancestral Guardian or Fighter, Cavalier (or multiclass in both of them).
    3. level 4 pick Sentinel

      @jennyrosebane8129 4 года назад

      @@brandoncreek5709 yes, ether one is fine to use with the polearm feat, but with A.G, you can hold 2 targets in place and it gives more of an opportunity to mark your target.
      (note you can even mark at long rang. There is a debate on if A.G have to see your target or not and I personally would say yes you would have to)
      Totem of The Bear is great for front line bashing and the Ancestral Guardian is great at being the protector.
      Mix A.G with Fighter, Calv. marks and you can hold back a lot of foes.

    This feat seems to work well with swashbuckler too, particularly rakish audacity and panache. With rakish audacity, an attack of opportunity would allow sneak attack if the target was alone, or if an ally is next to it. And with panache, if a target was next to a sentinel feat character, use panache to goad them to attack the swashbuckler, effectively killing their turn, I.e the target goes to move to hit the swashbuckler triggering sentinel. Hit reduces to speed to zero. Rinse and repeat.

  • @Treblaine
    @Treblaine 3 года назад

    Excellent synergy with Barbarian Ancestral Guardian as it fills the gap of how things that trigger reactions come AFTER the trigger unless specified, so if a gnoll within 5ft of you attacks your wizard ally you cannot hit the gnoll until after the gnoll has completed their attack against your wizard ally. Ancestral guardians have the added protection of meaning that attack on your wizard will not only be with disadvantage but even if he does hit then the wizard will have resistance to the damage. This assumes you've been able to land one hit on them. With sentinel they can't get out of your reach and are pretty much forced to fight you.

    If you take the warcaster feat as well would your "Spell's of opportunity" also drop speed to 0? If so take the "Spell of opportunity" to cast Heat Metal on armour an opponent is likely wearing. This means the target takes 2d8 fire damage, is stuck in melee range with you and has disadvantage on all attack rolls and ability checks. If this works it seems brutal

    • @ChancesSpellbook
      @ChancesSpellbook  4 года назад +1

      Technically by RAW, I think that would work. In the portion of the feat regarding movement, it doesn't say it has to me a melee weapon atk. I'd allow this!

    • @SageSchispell
      @SageSchispell 4 года назад +1

      @@ChancesSpellbook Speaking from experience of the feat that's not correct though. War Caster states that when someone walks away from you you can cast a spell INSTEAD of taking an attack of opportunity. It's the same as why this feat doesn't make their speed 0 if you use the reaction attack from this feat to hit someone who hit one of your friends.
      So sadly despite the fact that there are spells that allow you to reach out and touch the target of the "opportunity spell" it doesn't in fact drop their speed to 0.
      TL;DR: Sentinel does not stack with Warcaster :(

    Explain the controversy, please. I've never heard that there was one.
    I've listed both feats below mostly for my own easy reference. 1a (below) doesn't interact with 2c (below) at all because it's an attack not the Attack action so I assume that's not the controversy. 1b is a separate attack of opportunity condition that will never happen simultaneously and you can't generally take multiple AoOs anyway so that shouldn't be it either. If the problem is the 5' range that shouldn't be an issue either aside from homebrew rules that emulate 3rd/3.5's problems with hitting targets inside polearms' 10' range but that's independent of the PAM feat anyway so also shouldn't be controversial in this video.
    Polearm Master
    1a) When you take the Attack action and attack with only a glaive, halberd, quarterstaff, or spear, you can use a bonus action to make a melee attack with the opposite end of the weapon. This attack uses the same ability modifier as the primary attack. The weapon's damage die for this attack is a d4, and it deals bludgeoning damage.
    1b) While you are wielding a glaive, halberd, pike, quarterstaff, or spear, other creatures provoke an opportunity attack from you when they enter the reach you have with that weapon.
    Sentinel
    2c)When a creature within 5 feet of you makes an attack against a target other than you (and that target doesn't have this feat), you can use your reaction to make a melee weapon attack against the attacking creature.

    • @hokiesfan4500
      @hokiesfan4500 4 года назад

      I've often thought the same thing. The first part, with the creature being stopped...it only seems valid with polearm master. Because, if the creature approaches and strikes a friend, you interpose, and if you hit, it's speed is 0. Big deal. The creature already moved where it was wanting to go and by it's next turn, it will have it's movement back. So what is the point? The only way I could see it being potentially consistent value, is if you had something like Flail Mastery and you knock them prone. Still this is only valid if you or your allies turns follow the creatures and thus could get advantage on the attack. If their turn didn't follow, the creature will just get back up next turn.
