    I'm planning on taking this feat with my barbarian to make my first attack, use my bonus action to try and knock my opponent prone with my shield, and -- if the "knock prone" -- use my extra attack to attack that opponent with advantage like an absolute battle lord!

Anyway, with the advantage in strength checks when raging and DEX saves vs things he can see in general the shield master seems like a natural fit for a barbarian.

    For the past few months, I've been playing with a Firbolg barbarian based around the Celts, he fights with a spear and shield with the spear master feet, he is only level six but due to some shenanigans with a card deck, has a +5 to his strength attack mods and has double proficiency with persuasion attempts 🤟😎😁 so much fun.
    His flaw is he's an alcoholic which has lead to interesting events in game, like drunkenly lifting up the party's cart to shake the creatures that were attacking them off, then dropping the cart on them, killing them instantly.
    The rest of his party was petrified because of that and as most had been turned to stone, through sheer force if luck, popped out of the cart like daisies. If they weren't stone, we have been looking at a tpk. So much fun!

    Forge cleric buff doesnt apply to shield.
    At 1st level, you gain the ability to imbue magic into a weapon or armor. At the end of a long rest, you can touch one nonmagical object that is a suit of armor or a simple or martial weapon. Until the end of your next long rest or until you die, the object becomes a magic item, granting a +1 bonus to AC if it’s armor or a +1 bonus to attack and damage rolls if it’s a weapon.
    Once you use this feature, you can’t use it again until you finish a long rest.
    Shields are in the Equipment section (Chapter 5) of the PHB, but are not classified under the Armor section when determining Light, Medium, or Heavy Armor.
    Just a tip. Im currently playing a forge cleric and ran in to the same mistake

    • @ChancesSpellbook
      @ChancesSpellbook  4 года назад +1

      We had a pretty solid debate over it as well! We ruled that because 5e refers to shields as armor in the chapter 5 section of the PHB, it would be allowed. Honestly he kind of gave it to me, but I can see why a DM wouldn't allow it!

    • @ron.c.koster
      @ron.c.koster 4 года назад

      @@ChancesSpellbook i think its mostly because magic armor is easier to find and seeing as my lvl 6 cleric has 22 ac without anything special if i were to find a +1 full plate i could just move the +1 to my shield. It would be to big of an increase on the ac part.

    • @davidstratton696
      @davidstratton696 3 года назад

      @@ron.c.koster Too big? And yet Bladesingers can get up to 30+ ac without magic items (at lv 5 too). At lv 2 when they become bladesingers they can have up to 28 ac (again without magic items). So it wouldn’t be nothing to be able to do that. Having 23 ac shouldn’t be that big of a deal at lv 6. Especially with what bladesingers can do. I agree with Chance. Since shield is in the same section as the armors then it should be considered armor as well. Theirs no reason for a Dm not to allow this. That’s the same Dm that I feel would ban Bladesingers and if they don’t then they r being very counterproductive cause Bladesingers r way worse. Btw Bladesingers r my fave subclass.

    Taking it on my battle master fighter and came up with a special combo. You attack on your turn and BA shove them away, I took brace and disarming strike, brace allows you to use your reaction to attack an enemy who moves into range (this is not a Attack Of Opportunity and so doesn't gain from Sentinel but it still ignores disengage and mobile) and on a hot add the number rolled to the damage, disarming strike on hit, you can roll a die and just straight up add it to damage with a chance to disarm the enemy and can basically shut down their entire turn while dealing high damage. At lvl 4 (provided it works without issue) you can deal roughly 45 damage on average in two turns, you'll burn through your die quickly but you'll likely be dropping what your facing just as fast at that level.

    In my campaign, my DM allowes me to use bonus action shove to my enemy prone. Our campaign started before Jeremy Crawford SageAdviced this feat, that you have to use your bonus action to shove AFTER your attacks. My character(ATM) is a human variant named Vrangsig "Sigi" Baran, battlemaster 6 / barbarian 2 and this feat works really well with my character. Ability scores are
    STR 18 DEX 16 CON 14 INT 8
    WIS 10 CHA 8
    If my character needs to make a DEX save, he's not gonna fail that easily. Barbarian level 2 has reckless attack and danger sense, those features make my character very tanky and a dependable damage dealer. He also has Medium armor master, because I wanted him to be a little bit different fighter/barbarian.

    Surprised more people didn’t bring up the Paladin as this feels tailor made for em. You grapple, shield prone, and attack at advantage while holding them in place for the next turn to attack again and again with advantage to crit fish for smite. At level 6, you get Aura of Protection which adds your Charisma mod to all saves. If you had +3 CHA and +2 DEX, you’re sitting on +5 to DEX saves at all times, no proficiency. Take resilient DEX to add proficiency to DEX saves at sit at +8 to DEX saves at level 6. If you point buy, Tasha organize ASI to +2 CHA, +1 DEX, by 12, you can have Shield Master, Resilient, and 18/18 CHA/DEX for a total of +12 DEX saves.
    I stumbled across this feat as a paladin because I was making basically Reinhardt, and fell in love

    i kinda like telekenisis more than this one as you can have a bigger range of shoves, you can push or pull, and you get half a mental stat increase and a mage hand that's always available without words or hand gestures while being invisible. All that seems to be a better use than just the dex save bit, but that's just my preference.

    i feel that shield master is so underwhelming. Also it doesn't say you have to make the attack first, only that you have to commit to an attack. Also i feel that if you use your reaction to take no damage against a dex save affection you, it should only do half damage if you fail save. And also have all dex saves be applied the bounus and an ability for me to protect an ally behind me for example a fire ball.

    Looking real hard at this for my ARtificer-ARtilirist.
    shield+wand (and turrets). Depending on what infusionthingies you are using. You could stick one on your shield too (though armour might be a better choice-harder to lose. Not sure if you can apply the same infusion to multiple items. its worderd weirdly and can be read both ways)
    the shove will rarely if ever be used..
    but the rest sound nice.
    Sidenote: is the 2nd feature "target" is that the mechancal listing of target on the spell. Or the colloqual target?
    because it matters in the cases where an enemy drops a fireball on an area- and its just you there. You're not being "targeted" but you are the only "target" being hit.

    I took this feat at first level with my first ever d&d character Vrangsig, who is a human fighter / barbarian. This character has 16 in STR and DEX plus cloak of protection, so +4 and advantage on DEX saves. When I first saw this feat, that was the inspiration to a shield EXPERT build. The vision of a warrior who can REALLY use a shield well and take no damage from a spell. Too bad that it is TOO situational as RAW :'/
    My DM let's me use the bonus action shove BEFORE the attack action, because the campaign started before the errata. It' s way too restrictive that you have attack firdt and then you can use your bonus action to shove. What if your opponent dies? That should mean that you can't shove, because you have to attack first to do so. Personally I flavor it as charging and shield bashing the enemy. Did you know that only a few enemies have shield bash attack? You should be able to use your shield to attack, because you are a SHIELD MASTER. Not a shield wannabe.
    Personally I really like a shield warrior and describing the actions.
    Thanks for the video :D

    I would say this isn't as good for Swashbuckler, considering the rogue gets evasion, which is just a better version of that last feature, it would be really good on a Dex based fighter, or Dex based Paladin, and an insanely good Sword and board Barbarian(Shield master+Danger Sense, Advantage on Dex saves and a reaction to take no damage on a success, not to mention +2 if it only targets the raging barbarian which is possible though not likely.)

  • @Blossoming_Fate
    @Blossoming_Fate 4 года назад +1

    Potentially good for barbarian and monk? They are melee and have unarmored defence so they are probably going to carry a shield for more AC anyways(?). This would give the shield more of a use than “I now have +2 AC”

    • @ChancesSpellbook
      @ChancesSpellbook  4 года назад

      I would agree! They also benefit from knocking creatures prone!

    • @rukaeel1
      @rukaeel1 4 года назад +1

      a shield in a monk gives you less AC than not using it, if you use a shield or armor, you lose the feat of unarmored defense ... that add your Wis mod to your armor ... you can start with 15 or armor ( 3 dex 2 wis, or 2 dex 3 wis) and go to 17 in lvl 4 if you give point on both stats...but if you use the shield ...you are going to have 15 ...and no more than dex mod plus 2 of the shield, my monk doesnt use armor or shield and it have 17 armor. for barbarians works really good since the feat only restrain the use or armor, but you still can use shields so you can start with armor = to dex/con mod+ shield

    Had this in a former campaign on my fighter, it sucked. Knocking someone prone is nice, but after your attack(which only last until his next move) and as a bonus action just isn't usually worth it in term of action economy.
    Sentinel is a far better tanking feat.

    • @ChancesSpellbook

      Interesting! I feel like it might come down to team composition

    • @davidstratton696
      @davidstratton696 3 года назад

      What u do is use it to knock them prone using your bonus action and then action surge. Especially at later lvs that becomes really good (especially when u can do action surge twice pre short rest). So u attack them once then attempt to knock them prone, and then u still have more attacks and then that’s when u action surge. At lv 5 when u only have one extra attack and if y were to action surge u get 3 attacks with advantage (and that’s at lv 5). Once u get to 11th lv (I think that’s when u get another attack) then u get 5 attacks with advantage, and at lv 20 when u get another extra attack, then u get 7 attacks with advantage. And since your a champion then u have a much higher chance to get a crit. If u were an elf or half elf then u can get elven accuracy and basically get super advantage (u would have to play a dex char but dex is flat out better and also for str weapons one handed they r all d8 dmg and so no problem using a rapier).
      Also u have teammates that can benefit from that, especially if they r a rouge or even a Paladin that really benefit from having advantage.
      Also I know that it came after this comment but in Tasha theirs a feat called Skill expert that allows u to get expertise in a skill check (among other things) and so u can get that and become better with athletics so it’s harder for them to resist the prone. And since your a fighter u get extra feats so that shouldn’t be a problem.
      And yea I know this is a year old but meh.

    • @davidstratton696
      @davidstratton696 3 года назад

      And u essentially get evasion with this feat. And with how common dex saves r (the most common save) it’s so nice to have that. Keep in mind the evasion part works even if it targets more then just u. It’s only the adding the shield ac to the dex save that it has to be targeting just u. Which btw is so dumb and shouldn’t be a thing. It should work no matter what.
      Sentinel is a different type of tank feat. It’s more of a draw attacks towards u and shield master makes u flat out more tanky in general (just doesn’t have the draw attacks to u part). But again with how common dex saves r shield master is a better tank feat. But they do different roles. If the Dm is allowing unearthed arcana and u can get the tunnel fighter fighting style so u can get attack of oops that don’t use up your reaction then sentinel becomes just as good. If not then honestly the feat is alright. Those dex saves r not only common but also very deadly. Which is y shield master is better.
