Filmento is without a doubt my favorite movie analysis channel. I learn genuine writing skills and he has his own little style of humor that adds to and enhances the videos. Can't see how he gets any hate at all, really. Everything he says is justifiable and fair.
When you were talking about how joker needed his introduction, and just walking into the room would not have held any effect without it...… I just realized exactly how much that feels like some super hero movies. They just show up and since they know people probably already know everyone there is seldom a proper intro. No reason to care or understand, except what you know from the comics, which have no real bearing on the movie.
I haven´t seen much of your channel: I´m only recently starting to watch your content. So I don´t get any justifiable reason behind the "hate". Your videos look like very good quality, in my opinion. Twitter is a terrible platform, just keep that in mind. You could state something like: "I brushed my teeth today" and someone would find a reason to be offended and do everything in their power to share their misery. Keep up the good work!
People need to treat the word ‘difference’ like ‘variations’ or ‘variety’ that way people can start viewing different opinions as a variety of opinions, not just plain old “if ur not with me, ur my enemy”
This analysis taught me things about the Dark Knight, a movie I've seen more times than probably any other (a low bar, not a movie person), and I'm very happy for it. Also, your comment on defining technical terms is very important. Always gotta do it, never assume people know what you mean without clarifying
@Rajnoor Brar There are 22 pixar rules of story telling. My absolute favorate one is "A great hero is admired more for their failures than their successes". That one is very close to my heart. It means that you will suck at first and fall down over and over again but if you keep trying you might one day be good at something.
@@icecreamhero2375 do they have one on the hero's hardships? I see everyone say "give flaws to your hero". But I believe one could make a good hero by showing how hard it is to do good and only good. I mean, something as simple as saying the truth all the time is not easy.
@@whoareyou1034 No that isn't one of them it says give your hero flaws. But yeah that can totally work. Of course no matter how nice you are you aren't completely perfect. www.aerogrammestudio.com/2013/03/07/pixars-22-rules-of-storytelling/
I feel like a day in the life definitely offers a huge advantage in writing a story. I don’t think it’s absolutely essential because some pieces of art are good because they break rules. That’s the cool thing about story structure. A good writer can take any situation and make a great story out of it.
@@arandombard1197 exactly, you should know the rules and why they existed so you can start thinking about compensating the downsides of not having it, instead of 'oh well I hope it works out'
I still think there are some fundamental rules that must be kept though. Like every story must have a beginning and end. Otherwise, I can never see how that would work.
The thing is that still, you have to stablish the rules, which is a problem with most sequels this days: They don't stablish rules because you have to know them from the 15 movies and 3 TV series that came before. And that's stupid. You are supposed to make a movie selfcontained and for everyone, not just the guys that have maniacly followed your content for decades.
I don‘t know if such a movie really exists… Somehow I remember a movie that starts with a scene like in the kitchen where all the bad guys meet and talk about how the hero is messing with their businesses and they decide to work together and kill him. But after that we would go to a normal day of the hero which is interrupted by the bad guys‘ plan.
He really does a great job of breaking down films. Extremely underrated. Especially on that... underwater film with Kristen Stewart, whatever it was called. I can't even remember. I'm not even joking, because I feel like the name of the movie was something stupid like "Underwater" and it's making me look stupid because it's so forgettable. Edit: Oh shit, I just looked it up. Seriously? I swear that was not planned. What a dumb name for a movie. What a forgettable name for a forgettable movie.
@@rars0n Yeah, we all know stupid forgettable movies like this... I mean, just imagine someone would call a movie about a terminator "The Terminator" or a movie about the Titanic would be called "Titanic". Instant flops.
@Black Ninja then I try to absorb and understand them, to see if holds value since he has arguments to think differently. To... You know... Learn :)) (don't worry, I'm not one of the hatters)
@Black Ninja He's not saying he disagrees with particular points in this video, only in general. As do I. For example, I still think a "A day in the life of" sequence is not strictly neccesary to be at the very beginning of a film/story. I believe it can just as well come at a later date with the same effect. The only genuine thing that matters in any good story is execution and result. If something is satisfactory (in the sense that it is entertaining, not in the sense that it is "adequate"), then that something fits in the story. An ADITL sequence might just work later on as well. One may also argue that ADITL acts as a "baseline" and nothing more. That is to say, it gives us the context we need. As such, different things might provide that context, without neccesary being strung together in a single comprehensible sequence. That said, a single ADITL sequence is an effective tool, and putting it at the beginning of your film/story is effective, if done properly. I just don't believe it is strictly neccesary for every imaginable story. For classic hero's journey/action blockbuster films, it does work, though.
I remember watching Underwater and going... dang that was too fast...I don't even know who I'm supposed to care about. It's kinda ridiculous cos they don't criticize Joker for being a bad film cos it's obviously an amazing movie. But when we criticize their favorites..."Well Everyone loses their minds."
Not true. One movie is about a man dressed as a bat. The other one is about a women trying to survive a horriffic accident. Why tf do people compare these genres?!
@@Ivlodded Completely agree, though when I watched underwater I couldnt help but wish there had been a little more in the beginning. Filmento isn't wrong in his critique that that movie would have benefited from a less abrupt start. I wish there had been more TJ Miller though.

Day in the life sequences are good because seeing the status quo can show or at least foreshadow a character's mindset, including values and flaws, and gives a much more intimate lens through which we see the rest of the story, because we have a better understanding of what they're fighting for. They're also good opportunities for relatability/save the cat type stuff.

2:13 "Batman and the Joker clashing over Gotham City." That's A Day in the Life of Batman. Him rounding up Scarecrow on the parking deck, and clashing with the Batmen gang. The Joker Heist is an Opening Performance, because everything we see from the Joker is a Performance. He's got "LOOK AT ME!" Painted all over his face. This is an escalation of the Theatrics, and Deception of Batman Begins. The League of Shadows taught him 101. This is the next level of Theatrics, and Deception, and it's written all over the heist as well. He tricks his henchmen into killing each other off. He stops to plant the smoke grenade in the banker's mouth. That wasn't part of the plan, he had a smoke grenade with the pin tied to his sweater for that gag. "Do I look like a guy with a plan?" Yeah, you look like a guy who's plan is to conceal everything about your planS.
A Day in Life is just a reference frame to contrast with. It can be anything to establish the norm. I thought that's self explanatory. Did Underwater showed us a reference frame to contrast with? Now that's the bigger question..
That's usually to create contrast and conflict between characters and push the plot which most movies do and do well and which I appreciate for the setups and payoffs in the story. Underwater didn't do that because all the characters cooperated which is very unusual for a disaster/monster movie but it didn't really hurt the story as much as you would expect - Mostly because there were some good performances and the director made some great artistic choices - I think Filmento was too harsh on Underwater but I'm a big fan of this channel - Great content and insight into movie making and very entertaining. His point is valid - There was no day in the life to help you easily connect to the charcter/set expectations. I saw a video recently on a character not having an arc which breaks story-telling rules and that's very hard to do successfully, too. Think it was on the Just Write RUclips channel.
It's a TAT formula, tried and true, but I sort of enjoy how Underwater breaks it. It does make you remember it. We start with brushing teeth, then shit goes down. When we read an article, we get bare background before hearing about how the base collapsed. When we saw the movie, we got bare background before seeing the movie, the base collapsing.
As much as you can learn a lot from failure, I really enjoyed this as a more positive explanation of when something is done right. I went back to watch the Underwater video on the back of this, despite having not seen the film. The section on how the protagonists should really be responsible for the inciting incident kind of made me think of The Thing, with the initial release of the Thing being already set in motion by the Norwegian Camp. I guess there the difference is the film is about much more than survival, focusing on mistrust and paranoia, with the inciting incident from our protagonists point of view being to shoot the Norwegian instead of trying to figure out what their intentions were.
Nolan has got to be one of the finest directors working today. _The Dark Knight Rises_ wasn't even that bad. It's just that the trilogy had already peaked with this one.
For real tho, filmento is great at breaking down the fundamentals of a story to explain why a movie is good instead of most reviewers saying that it is good. Dude this is EXACTLY how i felt about this scene before i heard ANY1s criticism...i thought this was HANDS DOWN one of if not the best movie scene/opening EVER
one thing i love about the intro, is that some of the masked henchmen weren't informed about certain parts of the plan. the bus driver, after coming across the dead bodies of his fellow thugs, didn't know what happened, and Joker just ended him during the confusion.

I don’t understand why people are hating, I just recently found your channel but I genuinely think it’s super underrated. You give precise logical explanations of of your opinions which people can disagree with but it’s hard because of how you present your arguments.
I think saving private Ryan is an even better example of “a day in the life” going straight to the action. The d-day landing went right into the action but was still just a day in the life for a soldier in WWII
Filmento you are right about the day in the life of opening because unlike the previous movie that you mentioned ... Dark Knight is a direct Sequel and because we all know about Batman lore we already knew what was going to happen and what was going to take place and that's why a day in the life opening worked for the dark night and doesn't work well with other movies that lore are not well established and we know nothing about. So I give a Batman Pow to all the haters that try to debunk you! Keep up the great work my friend!
To this day i declare myself as a Filmento's goon. Your channel is just too good and precious to me even understand how come somenone hate on this, i mean it's just jealousy or idiocy.
Sam Raimi's Spider-man the Christopher Nolan's Batman trilogy are the films that are still the best in their genre. Although I'm closer to the Spider-Man trilogy, I understand why everyone likes Batman movies so much.
If I were to pick a perfect superhero trilogy, it would be a mashup of those: Iron Man (Beginning), Captain America: The Winter Soldier (MIDDLE) and Thor: Ragnarok (END). However, Raimi's and Nolan's (especially The Dark Knight Rises) have aged like fine wine.

It's the same problem so many J. J. Abrams movies suffer from. That guy simply cannot stay intrinsic to the movie he currently shoots.

Pixar Rule #4:
Once upon a time there was ___. Every day, ___. One day ___. Because of that, ___. Because of that, ___. Until finally ___.
@Rajnoor Brar There are 22 pixar rules of story telling. My absolute favorate one is "A great hero is admired more for their failures than their successes". That one is very close to my heart. It means that you will suck at first and fall down over and over again but if you keep trying you might one day be good at something.

I feel like a day in the life definitely offers a huge advantage in writing a story. I don’t think it’s absolutely essential because some pieces of art are good because they break rules. That’s the cool thing about story structure. A good writer can take any situation and make a great story out of it.
Yes, not every film needs to follow that structure but first you've got to know the rules before you can start breaking them.

That part broke me. I wasn’t prepared for that
@Black Ninja He's not saying he disagrees with particular points in this video, only in general.

"Do I look like a guy with a plan?" Ignore the haters. Anyone who is good at what they do will have people who are jealous and want to see them fail.
Your content is great.
Exactly. We don't know if they have boring office work every day or the fight different monsters all the time.
