Man of Steel - How to Build the Greatest DCEU Movie | Film Perfection

  • With Zack Snyder's Justice League Snyder Cut approaching and Wonder Woman 1984 being a ridiculous disaster, let's travel back to the origins of the DCEU film universe to the movie that set the bar for it: 2013's Man of Steel. Whether Man of Steel is the best DCEU movie so far is up to you, but it is a rare entry that functions competently from beginning to end in both plot and character, and also on the villain front with General Zod and Faora-Ul. What Man of Steel does, other entries should learn from -- and so today, let's see what lessons the DC cinematic universe should take from Henry Cavill's Superman movie to use in the future, either in Man of Steel 2 or any other. Hopefully less Suicide Squad and Birds of Prey and Batman v Superman from here on out and rather something in between.

    Man of Steel (2013)
Superman flies back onto the big screen in this Warner Bros./Legendary Pictures production directed by Zack Snyder (Watchmen), produced by Christopher Nolan (The Dark Knight), and featuring a screenplay by David Goyer (Blade, The Dark Knight). As the planet of Krypton crumbles, General Zod (Michael Shannon) stages a coup as concerned leader Jor-El (Russell Crowe) and his wife send their infant son Kal-El to a distant world called Earth. While the young child travels through space with an object containing the DNA of his home planet, General Zod and his cohorts are sentenced to an eternity in a black-hole prison. everything wrong with man of steel honest trailer snyder cut justice league trailer official trailer snyder cut release date batman superman aquaman wonder woman cyborg the flash hbo max suicide squad one dc-sastrous scene batman v superman the tragedy of opposition wonder woman 1984 a ridiculous disaster green lantern how to fail at iron man watch man of steel full movie online free 4k watch justice league snyder cut full movie online free 4k clip man of steel ending fight superman vs zod superman vs batman fight end battle final fight superman vs steppenwolf justice league man of steel 2 the batman birds of prey the impostor deadpool jack sparrow snyder cut reaction review steppenwolf new darkseid knightmare sequence best dceu movies dceu movies ranked reaction review rant bad movie shazam aquaman wonder woman Named Clark and raised by godzilla vs kong movie watch mechagodzilla king kong godzilla review reaction kindly farmers flashpoint movie michael keaton christian bale dark knight mcu vs dceu Jonathan (Kevin Costner) and Martha Kent (Diane Lane), young Kal-El lives in fear of what might happen should his neighbors learn about his extraterrestrial origins, eventually exploring the world in search of himself. Suicide Squad (2016)
In this "super-antihero" movie directed by David Ayer (Fury), a team of incarcerated villains -- including Deadshot (Will Smith), Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie), El Diablo (Jay Hernandez), Killer Croc (Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje), Enchantress (Cara Delevingne), and Captain Boomerang (Jai Courtney) -- are recruited by the government for a dangerous mission in exchange for reduced sentences. Jared Leto makes a cameo appearance as the Joker. Joel Kinnaman and Viola Davis co-star. Based on the DC Comics series.

    Birds of Prey (2020)
Director Cathy Yan’s superhero action-drama is a spin-off of 2016’s “Suicide Squad”. It stars Margot Robbie, Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Ewan McGregor. After deciding to operate independently of the Joker, Harley Quinn (Robbie) teams up with Black Canary, Helena Bertinelli, and Renee Montoya to save a young girl from a contract killing that has been initiated by a brutal and narcissistic Gotham City crime lord (McGregor).

The purpose of the scenes showing how difficult it was for Clark to fly was to later show how powerful and attuned Zod was. Zod was able to fly on his first attempt.
Bred to perfection vs Born naturally. It also served to give the audience a sense that Superman has indeed met his match. Or in this case, in some ways, his superior. Now there is a true sense of danger to our hero.

@@loturzelrestaurant It's a more realistic approach to the character. To be honest, I find it lame and boring to find such an overpowered person being picture-perfect physically and can smile every second despite all shit going on in his life. That's stupid and unrealistic as fuck, unless that person is a goddamn narcissist.
I like MoS, this depicts what would actually happen if Superman is placed in current society. There would be doubts about his morals and existence. There would be pro and contra. There would be political issues sprouting here and there. And Clark would be shaken because of that.
He is an alien, yes. But raised in Kansas as a human. He's a human being at the same time. He feels everything.
Remember that this movie is a different take (with more realistic approach) and focused on the *origin story* of the character. Clark is still learning to be Superman. He's still learning to bear the weight of the cape.
      Just like Jor-El said,
They will stumble = Superman being introduced to the entire mankind that KNOWS he exists in Man of Steel
They will fall = Superman being introduced to every possible problem that may arise in consequence of his morals and actions in BvS Ultimate Edition
But in time, they will join you in the sun. And you will help them accomplish wonders = Superman after he is resurrected in Zack Snyder's Justice League with all people realizing that he is a symbol of hope due to the heroic sacrifice he did ever since he wore the cape. This is the exact Superman we all know.

Yes. But Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice caused Zach's downfall after the movie's failed reviews but he somehow managed to rise again for the Synder's Cut.
I can't believe WB managed to get away with all those executive meddling to the point of ruining the director's reputation and the career, like what happened to Joel Schumacher when _Batman and Robin_ failed at the box office and the audience threw some hate towards him when it was clearly not his fault. Joel originally wanted to be more faithful to Tim Burton's Batman with darker tone but WB executives forced him to do what he wasn't asked for -- making it lighthearted to sell merchandise at McDonald's to kids. As a result, it becomes history.
Afterwards, WB did the same thing to Zach Synder. And they never learned their mistakes and pretend it never happened.

No, theres plenty of good Superman stories, and they generally combine his power with a situation that his power alone cannot stop.
One for example had him dealing with a suicidal man; Supes can just save him if he jumps, and the man even references this, but Supes instead talks to the man, hears him out and at the end, talks him down from jumping, helps him find therapy and promises that he'll check up on him.
The DCAU had even more examples, and they generally combine Clark's overpowered abilities handling the physical crisis, and his character dealing with the emotional.

It's never going to be about our super powers or lack thereof, it's always going to be our humanity. The struggle of going another day, of doing right instead of wrong and why, all of those things. "Stories" have been around as long as we have, and they are both horrific and hopeful, but all teach a lesson. Hopefully a lesson we can gain through the story instead of experiencing the issue ourselves.
So even if you're a "Super Man," you have problems, learning curves, struggles, and most importantly you have hope. Taking away his powers just takes away the "Super," and the struggle always laid within the "Man" aspect to begin with. Doesn't matter if it's galactic or fixing the kitchen sink, you either care and try or you don't. I remember being a little girl seeing my father shoved irritably under the kitchen sink fixing a broken faucet trap, covered in dirty water and thoroughly pissed, to Mom's amusement... and he was still the hero.

WB wanted a JL movie instead. BvS was the compromise.

true that, he actually is one of the best written comic book movies villains. Why? Cuz You can actually sympathize with him. All he wants is another chance for his people, to rebuild Krypton, recreate its world, culture, traditions - the very reasons that Superman wants to protect on Earth he used to grow up. I've never realized before that Zodd actually wanted to die at the end. That's why his rage to slaughter humanity and his slowness to use his laser beam looked so awfully cliche to me. (Plus the fact that, as a trained fighter, he should have had the upper hand). But it make sense if you consider that he's so desesperate to die fighting now that he has no goal. In a sense, he force Kal'hel to give his best and do what's necessary, a valuable lesson for a hero, given by an ennemy who had the same standards. In a sense, Zodd teach him to become what himself was always meant to be: a protector of this world.

Agree with your conclusion, but to nitpick...
You mention Zod is slow to use his heat vision and should have had the upper hand due to training (and also genetics. Zod was bred for war), but Zod was still getting his powers as the fight went on. Clark spent a lifetime absorbing Earth's yellow sun. Grew up learning how to finetune his heat, Xray and microvision and superhearing. All those new powers were getting stronger in Zod, overwhelming him and giving Clark a chance. Part of why Clark knew he had to kill Zod then and there, because he knew he could not win against a fullypowered, acclimatized Zod
Kind of begs the question though: If Zod was such a brilliant (genetically engineered even!) military tactician, why did he not just wait a couple months (go orbit Venus or Mercury or something, really soak up those rays) and power up before revealing himself?

    • @benjaminthibieroz4155

@@johnmacleod2487 Fair points. As for the question: his ship negates kryptonian's powers. He knew about the effect of the sun, but wasn't willing to wait. Why? Well he's in charge of an entire crew who spent years travelling in space, desperately searching for a homeworld. Having your soldiers wait when the objective is within grasp is risky. He was counting on his numerical superiority and the fact he could convince Kal-el.

    • @johnmacleod2487
      @johnmacleod2487 3 года назад +11

@@benjaminthibieroz4155 Agreed, Zod was eager to re-create his dead homeworld, but where's the risk of waiting a few more months? The primitive earthlings weren't going to solve the codex for decades, maybe centuries. They weren't even aware of it's existence. Kal was busy finding himself or whatever. Roaming around Alaska, fishing, stealing clothes, bussing tables, malevolently smashing up tractor trailers
Probably my biggest problem with the movie is Zod's motivation. Completely upside down. He wanted to terraform earth to be more like Krypton, but...why? Earth's conditions are not just 'habitable' for Kryptonians, turns them into near gods. Why would he want his new master race of Kryptonians to not be a Super master race? He just lost his homeworld because they fcked with the core. Finds a habitable world that turns him and his people into gods...and immediately starts fcking with its core. The ship negates superpowers, so why not turn that function off or go for a spacewalk? Why would Zod NOT want superpowers?
(Rhetorical questions. Fire away if you got them, but not really looking for answers. More of a rant lol. Frustrated that, despite its flaws, MoS really is still the best of DCEU)

Zod was breed to be a perfect soldier, while Superman needed years of training and trial and erro to learn, Zod simply adapts right after manifest his powers, weakness suddenly turned into strong points.
And another little addition, the scene where Superman is overwhelmed by his senses as a child, this was more to show Martha's connection to Clark and how important she is. And FYI, due to track records, etc, Whedon is who I trust in as a director, and not Zack. But he was given the product nearing completion, and then told to change so much, and was subject to far, far more interference than what Zack was going through in this last cut.
I suspect if Whedon had the product from the start, and was not rushed and given a half baked project already, he could have made something quite memorable. So I suppose you are right about studio interference being the main problem.

More to the point, he was told to lighten it up, and was brought on board by the execs to make it the avengers because they lost faith in any darker themes (as they were failing them before that time, even the last movie where Snyder was trusted with it).
It could have worked... If he wasn't given the movie at the eleventh hour, like few months to finish, that was already largerly darker themed, and then went to work on it. And then 3 months to completion, was told that the original runtime which even he was working on (3 to four hours), had to be cut down to 2 for movie theatre entries and money. Yeah, after he was already mainly dealing with just the emergency edits he was already dealing with on a movie that was largely already filmed and dumped into his lap.
Now, you tell me which god awesome director do you trust, in that mess, to have made an awesome movie? And make no mistake, Whedon is awesome.

He finished a mostly completed project due to good will (and they still fucked him), but if he was given the sort of latitude for the length of time that Synder now has had to do this Snyder cut? Yeah, I think it could have even been a better rendition.
Given previous hits, the fact that Snyder made not just 1, but 4 cult status director roles in his years, with 2 generationaly defining jobs (buffy was the GoT talk buzz of the later 90s, early 2000s, not sure if you have lived long enough to actually remember that), and far more on the good spectrum besides those, even some ones that dealt with serious topics, in not so joke a minute as you seem to want to criticize him (he can do many things well, if he is given the chance to).
Where as I have maybe liked 2 movies total where Snyder is concerned, and neither of them are even in the ballpark of where I put Whedon's best, nor even where box office and reviews are concerned from either fans OR critics, so I am not even alone in that sentiment.

The bad joke? The SAME people who HATED Superman Returns, that complained the movie felt OLD and LAME, were the SAME people that complained MoS, a movie made for modern viewers and a NEW take on the character that was raised in the 1980s AND NOT IN 1690s, was too OUT OF CHARACTER and not close enough to Christopher Reeves Superman....the hypocrisy/irony...

MoS, gave me exactly what Marvel lacked, a glimpse on how much of a threat can villains become to the whole world, and how much powerful does heroes need to be to stop them as well as the consequences on how that power influence to the surroundings of such fights, as well as show us why is it so important to have heroes to save the day. Filmento is a good critic, but that doesn't mean he'd be a good movie director, nor does it necessarily mean the people in the industry know less. It's just that filmmaking is such a mess.
If you try to make even something as small as a short film on your own, no amount of plot structure knowledge will save you from the headache that is making films.

When young Clark is getting bullied and he grabs the fencing, bending it..when the ginger kid who used to bully him comes over and helps him up..clark is reading The Republic by Plato.
The book is a series of conservation about the true nature of morality.
In order to explain his view of morality arising from an order soul, socrates describes the "perfect" city state.
The people are categorised into 3 classes of citizens, analogous to the three constituents of the soul.
The worker class (basic desires and drives)
The warrior class (the spirit/emotional drive of the soul)
And the philosopher kings (the intellectual part of the soul)
Sound familiar to krypton? A counsel of intellects. A warrior class
The philosopher kings impose their rule onto the working class via the warrior class.
The moral person uses his spirit to force his intellectual knowledge onto his basic desires. Yes that cake looks good, but i know its bad for me. As morality is an exceptional trait of humans, by doing something that makes me worse I am making myself less exceptional and thus less moral.
Likewise, a city that is not ruled by intellect, but by greedy businessmen becomes corrupt
In order to implement and sustain such a society, socrates argued that a myth would be created where the philosopher kings analyse each baby and say if they soul is made from bronze, silver, or gold and thus determine from birth their role.
      Sound familiar??
Now..many argue Socrates was indeed a tyrant for this belief. However he does actually say that such a society isnt feasible because the role of the state as cold as "whats best for the state" but had to allow for personal liberty and that is it just an analogy to how people who have potential to be anything (eg..codex of all possible kryptonians encrypted in their dna) must be tyrannical with their own impulses to act immorally.
so in short...its actually perfectly in line with the theme that the society would be tyrannical but the individual moral

In infinity war his plan is to wipe out half of life to prevent overpopulation but thats not how population works, there are plenty of articles explaining it, hes technically just straight up wrong but they tricked everyone into thinking it was right because the rest of him was well written.
Then in endgame, his plan changed to wiping out all of the universe just cause he saw that only 1 planet (earth) didnt miraculously make a huge improvement in 5 years. What about all of the other planets who improved?
Endgame thanos annoyed me so much, I always call iw thanos and endgamen thanos different characters. Thanos is supposed to be 1000 years old so why did 4 years make a complete change to his attitude and behaviour?
Thanos is a weird villain cause he only acts like earth is the only planet in the universe and bases all of his assumptions on the universe from one planet.

@@luke5930 Endgame Thanos did not have to sacrifice Gamora. Endgame Thanos did not have to physically go out and look for every single infinity stone and face the challenges the chase for the stones provided. In short, Endgame Thanos was narrow-minded for not having to face adversity. That's why he was so cocky. You can look at it as though Thanos was a grizzled old war veteran by the end of Infinity War, and Endgame thaos was a young bloodthirsty murderer believing he was immortal. The character arc is quite obvious, especially based on the way Thanos is portrayed by Josh Brolin in the two movies. One is weary and tired, even remorseful, while Endgame Thanos is just hellbent on achieving his goal.

Personally, the camera work gave me a headache in the theater. Additionally, the lessons he is taught by the Kents conflict with his final struggle with Zod (there was no indication killing was an issue for him). And, yes, generally, there is no hope and positivity in MoS's Superman. It's like how the 80's Ninja Turtles cartoon has little in common with the comic, but if you were first exposed to the cartoon, you judge the comic negatively by comparison. And I say this as someone who is not a Superman comic fan.

The film was a complete package and an epic journey from start to finish. I love the graphic novels used, the properly executed punchlines, and the background of the characters introduced. This movie did a great job showing the sheer power and destructive capabilities of Kryptonians under a yellow sun. Bro I am insanely in love with this cinematography and combat sequence. Notice how Faora didn't bash Clark's masculinity or invoke any "girl power" nonsense? And still, she came off as a powerful female character in the movie. That's good writing by Goyer, the Nolan brothers, and Zack Snyder. Also brilliant acting by Crowe, Shanon, and Cavil.

It's kind of a question on the machines limitations. Maybe Venus having more atmosphere would support it, or maybe Zod found Earth as insignificant as the other planets, or was too rooted in his purpose as a soldier that he wanted to fight for Krypton even if it was to his detriment.

They serve the same purpose as the following 40 minutes building up Clark. We get the antagonist and the protagonist established, before we move on to the actual conflict resolution. The beginning serves basically the same purpose as the bank robbery in The Dark Knight, establishing the villain and starting the central plot.
