It's such an injustice: the ex-partner was at the center of the police tunnel vision (people tend to search for information that confirms that they are right, it's the wrong approach) during that time the beast was able to abuse a 16-year-old, and get away with it. After years and even more victims, he was finally detained just to be let go with only 11 years in prison. It's such an implausible story (he was after all a violent murderer and rap*st who reoffended multiple times and without money) that one wonders about his pact with the devil.

From his perspective, not really. The cops already had the fix in on him; he was seen as a dirty biker in that town. If anything the cops should have done their due diligence to possibly exclude him from the suspect pool. Him giving them his defense would probably have worked the same as him not giving them anything - they would have likely just followed the prejudice both they and the town already had of him, and found ways to exclude or write off his alibi rather than him. If anything it would have made it more difficult for any future defense attorney of his because the cops would have already worked up their "theory" as to why his alibi wasn't valid. This is why anyone should ask for a lawyer before having a chat with cops. Don't give them anything unnecessarily out of your own mouth to be creative with ahead of time.

How on earth did this killer serve so little time for murder?

Dr. Grande's comment regarding Michael, "the police assumed he was up to no good". I wonder in a situation like that if the police, having been wrong for years about who committed the murder, are rehabilitated?

Her job at the Sandpaper Factory really “wore her down”!! Oh Dr. G you ARE sneaky - I nearly missed this rough comment.

Police should know to follow the evidence always. Only the evidence proves anything. Thank you for the video.

I just watched on 20/20 abc but pulling up info on internet in Abilene tx Joseph Scott Hatley was on ktab/krbc n Abilene must have been right after getting out of prison but was saying he had been layed off from midland tx pipe yard & moved to rv Park with his daughter & granddaughter. Guess he died not long after this because he was found dead. Let me know if you need more information for this & I will try to help?

I can never understand how some people go to prison or even end up on death row for a crime they absolutely had nothing to with committing. Yet others who are guilty with evidence of such are never arrested at all. …… I suppose maybe it’s tunnel vision by the detectives and if the perpetrator speaks to the police.
Such a sad , senseless murder. My sympathy to Susan’s family and friends. May she rest in peace.

Considering how much of a factor childhood abuse is in these types of cases, it defies all logic that Todd ignores it in every single case, consistently saying that the claims were never substantiated, and just leaving it at that. Its disgusting at the very least, and for a board certified psychologist to do it constantly it is deplorable.

I never want Dr. Todd speculating on what could be happening in my life. It almost always means something bad happened to you, or you did something bad to somebody else.
