The last time you blew your motor, I kept hearing about other motors been blown that had Whipples. I found out that just about all were linked to the cats. I immediately got some high flow cats and no problems. That is also with 1000cc injectors, JD duel pump, smaller pulley and E-85 tuned.
31k here, been whippled since truck had 4k miles still on whipple tune just did a cat delete. No issues. Driven all over the country. Sorry to see you having issues brother
Yeah, this came out of nowhere. I didn't expect it at all. The truck had been running great and data logs were looking good as well. I had to buy fuel from a gas station I wasn't sure about because my regular was out and that could be part of the problem. I think higher revs plus more power and cylinder deactivation were a major cause of the failure.
@@BackroadDriver you still think its the CDA causing these blown engines? There is 1000's of these trucks running now with some 900-1100 rwhp and not reporting issues of that or being blown up. Of course thw harder you run anything it will break. That's just the rules. Hate to see this happening to ya brother. Something else is causing these blown motors in your truck I think.
Jamie flow tests every unit he ships. The fuel filter is included in that test and I believe the intention is the filter is adequate for flow and also cheap to replace. These are easy to get to just in front of the fuel tank and can be swapped out without spending large amounts of money for a billet aluminum, anodized, fancy schmancy, fuel filter. Basically, yeah it looks small but it does everything it needs to do without costing a ton of money.
@BackroadDriver looks like an easy to work with piece just seemed small diameter for e85 flow. Video vs in hands feel hahaha You guys do some great content, looking forward to this series. 👌🏼
@BackroadDriver yes sir! My Ford Dealership put the whipple on, 4 days later at 2200rpm @80mph just cruising, it popped. Rod 1 left the building, half of rod 5 was visiting the A-arm. My AC compressor wanted to leave the party as well, so it vacated right off the front end and the bracket got into a fight with my main engine harness and beat it up. Due to covid, it took them 6 months to fix it ( waited on part delays ). Got it back mid November, and 6 weeks later, the Catalytic converter light goes off. Drop the truck off Dec 17. Dec 20th, and they tell me no ETA in sight for cats. I ask if it's OK to get the truck back, and is it safe to drive just during Xmas as I had family coming in. They said yup, no problem and tossed me my keys. Driving this bitch to the dealership day after New Years and one of the cats was so plugged it popped the rings on the whole left bank. They tried to blame it on Whipple, but whipple proved it was on Ford, so Ford covered it AND towed my truck to Whipple to verify the tune and install was correct. I only live about 2hrs from Fresno Ca where whipple is based. That was another 3 months waiting. Then I fucked up. Since California only has 91 octane. I started using octane race boost from my local speed shop to get to 93 octane. That shit burned up my cats in 2k miles. $240 in octane booster cost me almost 5k in repair cost 🤣🤣..now I mix 100 octane out of the pump with 91 to get to 93 and the truck has been running great ever since
Dang son! That's pretty wild. It seems like the cats are the problem on a lot of these trucks having issues. I wanted to think cylinder deactivation was more of an issue but it looks like a cylinder left the building for other reasons. My cats are good even after the motor blowing and oil going through them. They are gesi not the factory ones though. I'll guess I will find out how how long they last unfortunately. Good luck with your truck!
@BackroadDriver Thxs Brotha! Just for context, the first time the motor blew, they chalked it up to a bad oil pump from the factory. Love the channel, keep up the great content!
Sorry to hear about this. We ordered the fuel system around the same time. I didn't have to change any of that stuff and the injectors i called FIC and ordered mine and they sent the correct ones the first time. Running strong so far so good. Hope you get it sorted out
It ran great until it didn't. I had no idea this was about to happen. I'm pretty sure cylinder deactivation had something to do with it. I'll talk about that a little bit more in the next video.
I went catless. May also be the difference. Check your cats. One run I did I had to replace my Corsa muffler because right after the pull started getting a weird noise like a roaring sound. Thought it was my pumps cause it only did it around a certain rpm. On the run guess it was so much pressure it messed up my muffler. Glad I was catless would have definitely messed those up. Muffler was under warranty replace sound went away.
Sorry to hear man. Much as I want a off road/ race truck I switched my tremor order from the 5.0 to the 3.5 to keep it more a truck. I'll build a separate toy I can break.
Smart. I've had both engines in the F-150 and can't hate on the 3.5 is a good all around motor for towing and performance. If you add a bigger intercooler and a mild tune the 3.5 is pretty hard to beat as far as power and reliability go. It's not going to take down a blown coyote but that combo might be a sweet spot.
@BackroadDriver yeah that's kinda my plan. Coming from a 800hp s550 that had a LPF kit, I know the love/hate relationship. Hope the hammer comes back even stronger brother! 💪 🔨
Damn I know so many people that beat the piss out of their 21+ whippled truck that still going strong. That’s wild. I wonder if there isn’t something else causing the trouble. As for the oil, since boosted I’d recommend and non-return vented catch cab to keep the oil from going back in.
I know some guys are having good luck so far. I drive harder than most but I don't beat on it. I allow the truck to cool down between pulls and keep everything well maintenanced. The valve train and DOD (Cylinder deactivation) is the weak link on these motors. Part 2 coming very soon.
I'll make sure and explain this well and part three of this video. Disabling DOD is not the same thing as removing it. Just because they turn it off electronically and make it not drop the cylinders, the parts are still inside of the motor. Those parts are what are failing. They are still attached to the valve train and they are fragile especially at higher RPMs with more power. When the small parts that are used to hold the valves in place for cylinder deactivation break because of vibrations under heavy loads they cause catastrophic failures. It doesn't matter if your tunner turns them off or not. If the parts break, so does your motor.
Damn, that''s brutal to see guys. Truth be told this news has me a bit nervous, I was planning on watching how the hammer turned out and possibly moving my 21 Whipple over to an e85 tune as well. Hoping that the hammer is here to stay! Any idea on when part 2 will come out?
The first time was caused by a leak on the intercooler seals inside of the head unit. It was shipped without a proper seal and was leaking heavily on the first startup and during the test drive. It basically ran all of the coolant in the system through the motor and down through the cylinder walls on a couple cylinders. We flushed everything out and ran with it but a few thousand miles later the scarring was very bad with a lot of blow by and the cat on that bank was destroyed as well. It caused the exhaust valves to fail and scarring of the cylinder walls even further. We had no compression in cylinder 8 and cylinder 7 was at around 50%. I've had aftermarket cats on the truck since the second motor was installed so they weren't an issue this time. We will go through my thoughts on why this motor blew in part 2.
Exactly what I was thinking when I was looking in the rear view and the smoke show behind me was unbelievable. I'll put it back together and decide where we go from here.
That’s how you learn how to make it great. Break it, learn, rebuild. Gods work right there

Remember what i said two years ago, I'll live vicariously through you guys, while leaving my 2021 F150 Space White 4x4 Single Cab 5.0L stock.
Good choice. I'd do it all again, but it's getting harder to justify and very expensive.
LOL @ the end you guys are hilarious
So sorry this happened. I know how painful this must be. Hope you can get it sorted out and recover. Not cheap.
It sucks. I'll put it back together and go from there. You're right, this won't be cheap.
Sorry about your motor! Did this blow with the Livernois Tune for the whipple?
Just starting the video but is that fuel line and filter what feeds the engine?!?! Seems VERY small...

Don't feel bad, I'm on my 3rd motor as well. I have a 2021 Roush F150 with the whipple. But ford covered it both times.

Oh wow, so sorry to see the Hammer down. She will live again.
