A massive trove of digitally restored clips from “The Ed Sullivan Show” will arrive online during the next three years, reviving more than 10,000 long-buried performances and guest appearances from the iconic variety show. The global streaming project launches today with seven clips on RUclips and other platforms - a Motown-dominated batch of videos that includes performances by Diana Ross & the Supremes, Marvin Gaye, the Jackson 5 and Temptations and Gladys Knight & the Pips. They’re the tip of a cultural iceberg contained in the “Ed Sullivan Show” archives: The Sunday night program ran from 1948 through 1971 on CBS, piping the rock ‘ n’ roll revolution, Hollywood glitz and Detroit’s Motown sparkle into American living rooms alongside Broadway, opera, vaudeville, comedy and novelty acts.
All well and good, but something tells me the 2 most important episodes will never be featured on RUclips... The 1948 kinescope of the premiere of TOAST OF THE TOWN. The complete videotape of the 1971 series finale. ❤
Of all of the songs in Marvin Gaye's discography from the 1960's, the only song he performed on Ed Sullivan was one that didn't even crack the Top 40. He had so many fantastic songs during this period. I would have love to have seen him performing "Can I Get a Witness" or "Pride and Joy" or "Ain't That Peculiar" or "That's The Way Love Is" or even one of his duet masterpieces like "Your Precious Love" with Tammi Terrell. I wonder if Gaye couldn't get more airtime on Sullivan due to his rocky relationship with Berry Gordy, since he married his sister Anna (and from what I understood, that marriage was very rough)?
@@sophisticatedmm3632 • saw him at Cap Center aong with a couple of other S.W. friends went over to his house on Varnum for a cookout. He never forgot his friends.
Third greatest voice is debatable. Marvin had a three octave range..neither Michael Jackson or David Ruffin could outdo him on heard it through the grapevine, let’s get it on, inner city blues, what’s going on, distant lover, you sure love to ball, right on, just to name a few, and neither of them could write, produce, or play instruments.
It was the style of the day. You might recall Stop in the Name of Love. And shame is way over the top for anything to do with singing, don't you think?

This is the record, the Ed Sullivan orchestra couldn't play Motown if they tried. Look at other Motown act that appeared on the show that orchestra was real horn heavy
