My phosphates, nitrogen, and ammonia are all zero or almost zero, but my pH is close to 9... Should I just wait it out and hope it establishes? Or should I add some pH down? It looks just as green as the picture in this video. I've added some bacteria powder several times, perhaps I should add more?
The pond is 6 foot x 13 foot and almost 3 feet deep. I filled it with City tap water and added a dechlorinator. The pH yesterday was at 9. I filled the pond on July 1st.
What’s that in gallons? You gave the bog volume in gallons. If your tap water is 9 it’s no wonder the pond ph is 9. Is the bog filter sized correctly, with right flow? As bacteria populations establish they naturally lower ph. Another option is to have the water flow through peat moss (in a mesh bag), that naturally reduces ph. It might stain your water brown.

Thanks for the videos and information. I plant to use create a DIY natural filter like yours. I am trying to decide where to place it. It will be like the large blue barrel filter you created in one of you videos. Also does the pump need tp run 24/7 or is there way to reduce this and the cost of running it. WIll bills going up here in the UK I thought I would ask.
You need to come and have a look at my pond. I’ve done everything you have got and I have to physically drag algae out of my pond weekly.i only have a small pond and have a lot of filterage and media, rocks and plenty of surface area, waterfall and everything as well as a uv light and plants. I’m running out of room for my fish because of the plants and filters. It’s above ground so I don’t know if that makes a difference
Hi my brother has a pond with its in the sun 90% of the day we cleaned it out the otherweek but it's gone green again is it best to get a roof over the top or get some plants because there's nothing in the pond just a filter and fish
It’s more the balance between filtration, fish and feeding. I’ve lots of ponds in full sun all clear. Having said that it’s also true that it’s very hard for algae to grow in full shade.
Your videos are the best!! What stunning green plant is it in the top of the bogfilter? Looks like some kind of Thyme or something?! Greetings from Sweden🇸🇪
I just use efficient submersible pumps. I place the pump in a skimmer or intake bay. A negative edge system works also. This will stop large materials clogging the pump. Pond skimmer vs intake bay vs negative edge ruclips.net/video/k1OOOWexOiA/видео.html
I currently don't have any snails and was thinking about getting some Ramhorns. Are they more a pest or beneficial? Will the babies get stuck in the bog filter and clog it up?
They will breed like the plague if there is too much food available. If there is a nice balance you’ll hardly notice them. That’s been my experience anyway. I’ve never had them clog the bog.

Can a newly added bog filter clear a green water pond? For example starving the single celled algea to death by removing nutritions or do i have to kill them with UV maybe? After that the bacteries can keep the balance.
A properly sized bog with proper flow rate will eliminate the green water. Usually within 2 weeks. At least that’s been my experience and many others that I’ve received feed back from.
We just brought a house with a pond I didn’t realize how big it was I’m like where do I start.😮😮😂😂 it needs to be cleaned and I don’t know if we have the money to have someone come out 😮
I recommend Sponge Filters in every corner. If it is rectangular shape ☝️ And 2 or 3 Waterfall Filters or HOB Filters, if it has small enough walls. You want Sponge Filters, for oxygen and gas exchange. I also recommend a Skimmer 😤
They take over if you can’t control the nutrients. Removal in deep water is quite difficult. You also need plants that grow throughout the year. But yes plants are good filters 👍
I love ALL of your vdo's and have watched all of them multiple times! Thank you for doing this. Wish I could transport you to Thailand to help me with my pond! I have a 6 x 8 x 1 meter deep natural earthen pond with no liner for my 20 ducks and 7 geese. The water has turned green. They are still swimming happily in it - but I just wanted to find the best and economical way to keep the water cleaner and not green without using a liner and possibly without a filtration system, if possible (?) You say that the single cell algae need more surface - can I add more aeration to the pond and then some stones / rocks to the sides and bottom - and then some diatoms weekly? Do you think that this will help? I have tried to add a variety of plants to the pond such as water hyacinth, duck weed and water spinach - the ducks ate them all up in a matter of seconds! Vetiver grass along the edges of the pond is the only thing they're not eating. The problem is they grow much too fast and we can hardly see the pond now! I feel like ripping them all out and start all over again. Any suggestion you can provide will be much appreciated.
Clay lined is very hard, so is ducks and geese. Basically your main issue is too many nutrients being added to the pond. It’s like trying to outrun a bad diet, if you eat bad food all the time it’s very hard to exercise your way to weight loss. Therefore your first thing to do is reduce the number of animals using the pond.
@@Ozponds Thank you so much for your response. Looks like I will have to go with lining and filtering option. Do you think a filtration system would work? --- any tips? If the water is not crystal clear, I can live with that - as long as it's relatively clean rather than green. When you clean the filter - where does the solid waste go? I was thinking about putting in a septic tank to manage that - just like a toilet, but bigger I would imagine. I can't reduce the number of the animals - they're family 🙂
You’ve gotta go massive if you want to filter for the ducks and geese, probably 20-30% bog filter, intake bay, and an additional high flow filter that will capture a lot of the waste and you can flush out more often. It’s a big expense. You said the ducks and geese are happy why not just leave them happy in their green, muddy pond? When I flush my filters I use the water on the garden, it’s great for the plants.
@@Ozponds I have also been using the water from the pond for the garden and the soil is coming back to life. It has only been a year since I started to use this plot of land for the animals and for growing edibles of all sorts. I do not use any chemicals on the property - and make my own compost. The soil was really bad and hard as a rock. The animals have been helping with revitalizing the soil all around. I know that it would be a very big expense to do all the filtration system and in the end the water may not be as clean as I had hoped. On that note - I think that I will clean up the edges of the pond - add some rocks around the edges as well as inside (bottom?) the pond as surface for the algae - then add freshwater mussels, frogs, fish (what kind?), turtles (?), diatom once a week and some water plants (would water lilies in containers work?) - and lots of aerators. How about adding geotextiles at the bottom of the pond to keep the mud in place and then stones / rocks on top? Total depth 3 feet enough or too much? One thing good about this spot is that when I dug down, water came out of the ground so I don't have to top it off much at all - only a bit once in a great while during the dry season.
You really just need to experiment. All I can do is show you my ponds and offer my experiences. Your pond is so much different to mine, your biological load is way more than I would choose for my ponds, therefore you really need to do the experiments. Once you find out what works share it and help others 👍

i've had crystal clear water for years but after the longest heat wave (40-42 degrees) in europe, ever, about 10 days, my pond water turned green for the first time. It's been a week now and doesn't seem to reverse. I stopped feeding my koi for 2 days at the begining and reduce feeding after that. I might stop feeding at all and wait. I have pretty large filter system and bottom drain and skimmer and lots of plants and never had a uv light.
I also assume over the years the koi have gotten bigger, maybe had babies. Sometimes fish outgrow their filters or maybe it’s just the heat and lack of oxygen.
Yes. Especially the kids they stir up all the debris. I like it because then it gets sucked into the intake bay and deposited in the bog. In the bog it can settle and then I pump it out when I clean.
Kev I think I have messed up bud. I wanted white sand in the bottom of the pond but they sent out white silica sand. It's been two weeks and the pond water is still brown... Fish are all good as well as the plants but it is a ugly brown colour worse than tannins and it doesn't seem to be going away. Any suggestions?
It could be a diatom bloom due to the high amount of silica. If that were the case I think it will sort itself out once they consume all the silica. That could take a while. I wouldn’t feed the fish they’ve got plenty of food available.
Hi Kev, I am in South Australia. I have a 10 metre stream leading to my pond. Since Winter has hit, i have noticed the stream has gone from being clear to being covered in algae (interestingly the pond itself is pretty well unchanged - it's just the stream which is affected by this extra algae). This type of algae really sticks to the pebbles in the stream and is very slimy to the touch compared with string algae - it is quite difficult to pick up actually because of how slimy it is and how well it adheres itself to the pebbles. Its colour is a mix of kinda fluro green and has dark brown mixed in as well (whereas string algae I have had is more just dark green and is easily grabbed onto to pull out - and not as slimy). Have you seen this kind of algae before? Is it just a different species of string algae, or is this a different beast altogether? Even in my other pond, it seems to grow mainly where water is running - ie. waterfalls & streams, rather than in the actual pond. I have read that beneficial bacteria die off at under 10 degrees C, so not sure if that has anything to do with it? The other thing to mention is that I have a lot of plants in the pond, but hardly any at all in the stream itself, as I didn't want to interrupt the flow of the water. Perhaps that might be the issue? if you think it is better to fill the stream with plants, what sort of percentage of the stream would you say should be filled with plants? Sorry for all the questions :) Thanks mate.
I have similar algae in winter. I don’t know exactly what it’s name is…I call all filamentous algae string algae (don’t know if I’m right or wrong). I think it grows in the stream for a few reasons. 1. Shallow water in the stream better light penetration. 2. No fish to have a nibble. 3. The bacteria aren’t as active. Again I’m not sure if I’m right or wrong, that’s just my hunch. I just accept it. Sometimes if I can be bothered I’ll remove some. Usually once the weather warms up things get back to normal. Maybe plants will help. As I’m typing away..I’m thinking 🤔 and my courtyard stream has no visible algae (lots of plants in the stream). My dream pond stream has lots now (the impatiens have all died off in the cold). There are still some evergreens in the dream pond but perhaps not enough. But again one pond is new and still processing lots of nutrients that came in during construction and one is very established so hard to say for certain.
Mine oddly goes cloudy, green then algae dies and it's still cloudy ... then goes green again and round we go. I got some filter pads I put in my intake bay and got some fancy aerators and that helps too. But still tweaking placement of some pumps and aerators and I think I need more rock in my regeneration bays too
Help my pond is so green I feel so bad for my Goldfish surprised they haven't jumped out try eater lilies grow really good til winter now their all decade I don't think they're coming😕
For a pond. Think of it the same way as an aquarium. You want all 3 types of filtration ☝️ Here: 1.) Sponge Filters - gas exchange 2.) Waterfall Filter - surface flow 3.) Skimmer - keeps the surface clean and safe for both plants and fish 😤
What is the brown algi in a pond please. Is it bad? I'm very new to ponds. Only have space for a tiny one. But in the sun I get brown stuff over the stones and plants. I don't have a filter. The brown algae is generally diatom growth this is not a problem. If you feed the fish I would stop or greatly reduce it. The diatoms should be producing loads of food. If the algae gets too thick (it should feel kinda like jelly) you can vacuum, siphon or net it out. Hope that helps 👍
I had loads of frogs in my pond and I believe the tadpoles are good for the ecosystem and I think they eat the algae plus mosquitoes larvae - but my caretakers ate them all! Now I have to go and get more frogs!
If I understand you clearly, you put you biospheres in the waterfall? I have a 210,000 gallon irrigation pond without fish and used now just for pleasure. I have wildlife and a wolf pack we raised for educational and healing programs. We all swim in it. I have not found anyone who will come out to my rural area to help maintain or knows how to. I am in Los Angeles county in California. How much bacteria should I need for full sun exposure? Thank you.
That pond is so big with so many variables. Bacteria need wet surface area, therefore if you do not have enough bacteria, you need to have surface area available that the can grow and multiply. That could be underwater structures, more plants, rock, pebble or dedicated filters.

I have 2000 liter pond with a waterfall and a uv 5 in one pump and a air bubbles.
Thank you
I’m honestly not sure. I think it’s nothing to worry about. Some of these fish hitched a ride in a waterlily I bought. They started off brown, turned gold and now a few are going white.
@@Ozponds thank you for your reply , yes it's strange they are fine in themselves very active sporning today bashing eachother about eating ok ,
I chatted to a koi specialist in store he said check your kh all tests are OK little hight on the hard water within range .
most I've had for over 20 yes some for 5 years one of my older fish is golden yellow he's fine nothing on him just the orange red fantails .
I did notice the one's that are white are getting golden yellow around there face 💛 ?
I trust your advice there's nothing to worry about. Thank you take care
It seems when they change colour the head goes first.
mild winter and by midd feb my pond (10ftx4ftx3ft to 6inch deep) looks like peasoup.. all plants are healthy and need a trim.. however seems to be scummy slime weed all over plants, water near opaque and several fish passed away on same say last week (no obvious cause seen) ... think this weekend will be doing clean up and tidy along with partial water change

@@Ozponds if im honest the thought of a days pond sprucing makes me smile.. thought about a small fountain to go with the planted bog filter and waterfall/rockery last year ..... of course i will need to buy fountain fittings (already got pump) meaning a visit to local pond/aquarium shop is unavoidable.. tut... :-)
Tinkering is always fun. I was sad for the fish loss.
Hi kev
I have watched many of you videos on pond and greatly inspired we got our pond renovated with setting up a bog filter. We have a pond made of bricks and cement, also concrete floor. Upon your advice i put lots of rocks and pebbles on the floor. Then as we intriduced water a week ago it was crystal clear for a few days but now turning green. I observed the water is not green but the walls and floor are turning green. I have been running the bog 24/, have planted bacopa and mint. Kindly can you advice how can i get rid of the algae , will the bog clear it eventually ? Have no leaves falling and no fishes
String algae is almost always an issue in new ponds. You really need patience. New pond syndrome | Fixing algae issues

@@Ozponds really appreciate for your quick reply as always
I did see the video, and I did add 280ml of beneficial bacteria last week and for aeration I have a waterfall and also the bog filter running , do I need to add any more aerators and more bacterias ?
No just patience.
Hi kev
Your advices has helped me a great deal and as you said patience is the key. My pond after more than a month now is not as clear as it was earlier, now the pebbles and the wall are turning blackish due algae growth but I can still see the bottom. It seems clear but getting foggy. The surface of the pond also has lot of dust which is making the view gloomy
What can I do, do I need to do water changes ? The bog filter is running 24/7 the clarity what was a month before has gone down
Thanks for the videos and information. I plant to use create a DIY natural filter like yours. I am trying to decide where to place it. It will be like the large blue barrel filter you created in one of you videos. I wanted to know if the filter smells as I was going to place it next to my shed but if it smalls I may relocate it else where. Also does the pump need tp run 24/7 or is there way to reduce this and the cost of running it. WIll bills going up here in the UK I thought I would ask.
No it doesn’t smell. I run mine 24/7 that gives consistent results every time. You could try and see how it goes running less.
Thanks will try.
Great video! :D May you tell me which kind of plant is the one over the waterfall?
Bacopa monnieri
@@Ozponds Thank youuu
You need to come and have a look at my pond. I’ve done everything you have got and I have to physically drag algae out of my pond weekly.i only have a small pond and have a lot of filterage and media, rocks and plenty of surface area, waterfall and everything as well as a uv light and plants. I’m running out of room for my fish because of the plants and filters. It’s above ground so I don’t know if that makes a difference
All I can do is show what works for me and my ponds. They are all a bit different.
Electricity costs have tripled here in Europe. Do I need to have filter pump on 24/7?
No
You don’t have to, it just makes the results more consistent. If you’ve got lots of fish you might just need to re home some.
Also, I was told that using biologicals don’t work if you have a UV filter which I do have. Thanks so much for what you do.
I recently set up a bog filter with 12" of gravel and a few aquatic plants. How long should it take before I notice a difference?
If you built it to the right size, within weeks.
Your videos are the best!! What stunning green plant is it in the top of the bogfilter? Looks like some kind of Thyme or something?! Greetings from Sweden🇸🇪
Thanks 😊. The plant up in the filter is bacopa monnieri.
@@Ozponds Thanks a lot🙏😍🤩
I'm building a bog filter but I'm not sure what pump to use as the one I have seems to clog real easy
I just use efficient submersible pumps. I place the pump in a skimmer or intake bay. A negative edge system works also. This will stop large materials clogging the pump.

Hi Kev. Your videos inspired me to build a bog filter for my patio pond. Do you use snails in any of your pond to control surface algea and detritus?
There are snails in all my ponds. I inherited them as soon as I added plants.
Thank you very much!
Mate for a bog filter can i use bricks instead of large rocks ? Just being tight ass and trying to use what I've got. Ibdont know what happens to bricks if submerged for years. If it's not a good idea I won't. You got patron, wanna send you a tenner pls?
I think so. I’ve never tried it but I’ve used clay aquaponic balls. I think a brick is just clay so I can’t see the harm. No I don’t have patron sorry. I do have a link on my contact page on the website. That allows people to donate if they want to send me a little thank you.
@@Ozponds bro I just tried twice on PayPal but its not letting me select my address. I did try. My conscious is clear. I'm sending you 15 bucks of blessings bro xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Hmmm. You made me think the link was broken I just donated to myself all works fine. I didn’t receive your donation I recommend you request a refund, because I don’t know where it’s gone. It didn’t find me.
We just brought a house with a pond I didn’t realize how big it was I’m like where do I start.😮😮😂😂 it needs to be cleaned and I don’t know if we have the money to have someone come out 😮
Whenever I don’t have the money for something in life, I invest my time. That might be learning, it might be doing, generally it’s both.
I recommend Sponge Filters in every corner. If it is rectangular shape ☝️ And 2 or 3 Waterfall Filters or HOB Filters, if it has small enough walls. You want Sponge Filters, for oxygen and gas exchange. I also recommend a Skimmer 😤
Try aquatic plants for filtering water in deeper water
They take over if you can’t control the nutrients. Removal in deep water is quite difficult. You also need plants that grow throughout the year. But yes plants are good filters 👍
What plant did you use on the edge of your waterfall?
Bacopa monnereri
Thanks for the info. I Hope to have a pond one day. ❤️🐠
Your taking the right steps by watching pond videos 👍 then hopefully when the time comes you’ll avoid some of the beginner mistakes. Watch lots of different content creators so you get different opinions. I’m very much biased to ecosystem ponds.
How about a 14 gallon tub pond with no filter just plants and floaters.and Medaka Rice Fish. Any recommendations?
Is the water green? Probably just over feeding. I have about 35 small juveniles in a 5gal bucket. No filter just a bit of sponge and some bacopa.
@@Ozponds yes it’s green water.. 35 juveniles !!! DAMN!!! Only 5 teenagers in my 14 gallon tub .. Guess back to once a day feeding. Thank u Very Much for ur information
That’s ok. 👍
How long does it take to clean green water with a bog filter?
Usually less than 2 weeks
So you have a bunch of links for commission items to buy, but not links to the other subjects you mentioned you would add to the description. Like string algae problem?
Sorry. It shows me the first link is to a video on diy pond filters, second link is a video on string algae. Then there are the affiliate links. Is this not what you are seeing?
I see your video links at the top, I must have just overlooked them. Great videos!
i've had crystal clear water for years but after the longest heat wave (40-42 degrees) in europe, ever, about 10 days, my pond water turned green for the first time.
@@Ozponds could be all of the above
Whats that running across the pond in the bottom left hand corner ? 6:46 Ha looked like a funny animal i don't know, nice video thanks
I’m not too sure, all I see is the fish chasing each other.
Does your pond get murky when you swim in it often ?
@@Ozponds thanks Kev🤙
Now I want to know how you are peeking into my pond and then making videos with concerns you see...
Now you can fix your green water 😉
I do not have green pond water, but all on sides and on stones inside the pond there are algae, which is quite annoying. How do you even prevent that?

But still tweaking placement of some pumps and aerators and I think I need more rock in my regeneration bays too
Your pond is still new and finding itself. More rock will provide more surface area so that’s never a bad thing.
Help my pond is so green I feel so bad for my Goldfish surprised they haven't jumped out try eater lilies grow really good til winter now their all decade I don't think they're coming😕
Just gotta get the filtration right. It’s easy 👍
I was told I didn't need one. I have lots of air getting into the pond. I have to keep it shaded as it does go green but not pea soup green more like a pond that you visit green lol. I'm in the UK. I have five small gold fish types and a four foot by 3ft deep pond. It's been going a year. Looks pretty but I'm seeing this brown stuff on everything. Thanks in advance. I love your ponds. If I had the space and the know how. I'm learning though. I have snails in the pond too and just got some baby frogletts 😁😅
Everyone seems happy
The brown algae is generally diatom growth this is not a problem. If you feed the fish I would stop or greatly reduce it. The diatoms should be producing loads of food. If the algae gets too thick (it should feel kinda like jelly) you can vacuum, siphon or net it out. Hope that helps 👍
@@Ozponds ahhh thanks so much. Appreciate that. Have a great weekend. 😊
2:36 in. Mate... did you draw that on the back of a Martial Arts Teachers Association form?
😂 kinda it was a tournament form. Always recycle 👍
@@Ozponds I agree. Waste not want not. ♻
Hey Kev! Long time. I’m having an invasion of toads. How do you prevent these guys 😢
I dunno. If you build it they will come. Whatever critters are in the area that like water will visit the pond. Some will just visit, some will stay.
I'm sure you could have got all that information out a lot quicker if you weren't stoned lol
Good one buddy 👍
