I like to add a couple of litres of sediment from the shallows of a healthy aquatic ecosystem to seed new ponds with a diverse food web of invertebrates which will soon feed on and clear up the algae, and give your fish, frogs or dragonflies plenty to feast on.
Thank you for explaining how nitrogen and raindrops mix to form a fertilizer causing an algae bloom. I just started a few small ponds of my own and will keep an eye on them after a rain. Very interesting, thanks.

Green water can be your best friend. You as pond owner hate it but the fish love it (as long as it not too thick and taking away the oxygen). Green water indicates too many fish, overfeeding, insufficient filtration, and/or some other intervention such as over cleaning, medication treatment, etc. Taking away your obvious indicator can lead to more severe problems. I would limit food for a few days, add nitrifying bacteria, and add a dozen or so food supplement tablets of Folic Acid, 800 mg each tablet, every day until green water clears up. Faster bacteria growth, healthier bacteria, and longer lasting into the cold months, and faster bacteria growth coming out of winter. Just my humble opinion and 25 year experience.
Not arguing your point as it is valid... just adding to a possible omission on your part. Oxygen. Algae produces oxygen in the daytime and consumes it out of the water at night due to photosynthesis. If you want a green pond, go for it. Just supplement with plenty of oxygen.
I have 2 small ponds in my backyard and had lots of problems with green water, tried many different types of filters and nothing worked. then one day a heron came and ate all my fish, about ten on each pond. The water in my ponds is very clear now.

Hi, Carl, I know you haven't commented in a while, but I wanted to know more about particular aquatic plants we should avoid, as in those that will support algae versus helping to reduce it. You mention in the video that you removed less-desirable plants from this pond. I'm struggling with planktonic algae in an 800 gallon 3' deep pond with excellent aeration, deep shade from noon onward, and 3 5" koi. Pond is steady at 66F degrees. Following your recommendation of dosing with bacteria and using your recommended products, the water cleared greatly within two weeks, and the pond eventually cycled to where my ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate levels are good and processing within 24 hours. Now a week later, the water is greening up again to where I can still see a white object 2' down, but it's getting murkier by the day. I have creeping Jenny, sweet flag, water iris, cardinal flower, water lily, and pickerelweed planted in plain clay soil on a shelf in the water. The only change in variables I've seen in the last week is that I have been feeding the koi a little more as they grow (they eat all the food within an hour) and we got heavy rain that added about 1/2" of water to the pond. Thanks for any feedback you can provide.
My dearest Scott..... 😜 You are overfeeding your fish, and the recent rain also fed your pond. Remember, what you feed your fish, you feed your pond. Bacteria is a weekly maintenance thing and fish should only be fed enough to consume it all within 3 to 5 minutes - removing the uneaten portion for disposal. The cloudy water will clear up following this recommendation. Here is a link to the video you are asking for. Thanks for reaching out, for further questions, just call me at 888-713-7771 x 4 ruclips.net/video/U9mAqDUt0fk/видео.html
@@ColumbiaWaterGardens Thanks so much for your quick response and advice; I know it takes time and energy on top of your other interests/life. I'll dial way back on the food to 5 minutes (I've been getting overzealous wanting the little fish to grow) and will continue dosing weekly with bacteria. My local nurseries have cleared their aquatic plants, so I'll likely have difficulty finding taro, but it's now on my list after watching the video you provided. I recall seeing some in one of the big box stores a couple months ago, so I'll go out tomorrow and see if I can't find some. This is all a great learning experience since we are planning on building another much larger 2,500 gallon pond next year but wanted to start out smaller to learn the ropes some. Your videos and comments are a wealth of knowledge and ideas, so thanks again.
Hi . I have a 7ft by 6ft 2ft deep I clean it 2-3 times a year I have grade A koi and butterfly koi I know their dirty fish to keep but I love um the problem is it goes green quick I have a filter I have tried balls that clean I have tried green away but sends my pond brown never clear also tried that weed stuff but nothing works I want a healthier pond for my fish I also enjoy watching them x
Mine was green, I put plants in mine with aquarium soil, let them grow untill the roots came out the bottom and rigged them to hang over the side, did clear it up and was crystal clear until the koi pecked all the stones off and started foraging in said soil 😅 green ish atm and may remove them
Well after months of dealing with my solid green pond, after chemicals, new filter, and multiple water changes finally i fixed it. In just 4 days ... i bought a 20 dollar super cheap chinese uv clarifier light off amazon. Put it inside of my filter and just 4 days later i can see all the way to the bottom(2ft deep) . Freaking amazing.
Great video, and definitely some new information on the battle of "green water" Was just checking in on our gilled buddies now that the ice is cleared and another successful winter for them! Can't wait to use your new information for the season!
@@ColumbiaWaterGardens I would say when we get the green tint in the water (like small green particles) and the occasional blue heron :( Last season I added aeration along with the filters and water fall but didn't go as heavy with the water hyacinths. As your video points out about the dirt in the planters , my wife would set hanging baskets in the ponds to make up for not watering them occasionally :/ Now with your help I've got a whole new way of combatting this issue. Thank you!!
Add a couple of salad plants. Will solve your problem in a few days. Salad is fast growing and consumes nutrients fast. Best thing.... eat it when full grown.
This is an EXCELLENT tip!!! Water Lettuce and Water Hyacinth are some of the most efficient pond clarifying plants known to man. What they are doing is eating Nitrate - which is THE primary food supply to algae. By removing a primary food suppply from the algae, the algae cannot thrive. It's still there, but it's under control. It's a process that we call "competitive exclusion". Thanks for watching, and please share this video :) -Carl
carl what would you recommend if a pond had new pond syndrome 12 years ago when it was built- and never treated? How can i remove 12 years of green with dozens of healthy koi still in the pond???
It needs a professional (stressing professional) cleanout. The problem is that there is likely a sludge layer that has built up that is self sustaining your algae bloom. Check out my video on pond cleaning tips to see how we do it.
I'm having the same problem, basically, I have plants ordered, but they haven't arrived yet. My question is, what was the name of the product you added? Also: how do I secure the plants if I dont us soil? 30+ years of experience with tanks of all sizes, including aquascaping, first solo adventure with a pond.
Sorry for the late response, I hope you get this..... I used a triple dose of Aquascape dry beneficial bacteria and a double dose of Aquascape SAB on this pond. I mix it with a bucket of pond water pouring the contents around the perimeter of the pond. Then I repeat every 3 days until clear. If you don't have a local pond shop, please order it from my website at www.columbiawatergardens.com Further questions, please call us at 888-713-7771 x4. :) -Carl
I had put like 7 plants back in summer with potting soil that came with the plants... When the leaves were gone (there's a tree next to pond which in summer makes the pond be in shade) algae began multiplying, now it's all grassy, gotta drain the pond and remove it. I had like 6 in pots, 1 was in the actual water buried by rocks. Well, mistake made, never again, I hear people use cat litter for lilies and so forth, interesting.
Hope you can help! :-) . I have a waterfall feature in my yard, and the basin has approx 2 to 3 feet of water in it. The elgae is taking over, and I have green sludge on sheet rocks and of course bright green water....how do I get rid of it? help please! :-). Joanna.

I have a few questions that I will need to ask you in order to properly direct you to the most efficient way to clear up your pond. Each pond is kind of unique, and because of that, there can sometimes be some confusion on how to solve a unique problem. I'll wait for your call. -Carl
Ive got a 18 foot x 14 foot, 4 feet deep raised kio pond. 12 good sized kio. Ita been in about 10 months and had only 1 plant in it. All of a suddwn the whole pond turned geen. I've trwated the water a couple of time and have 2 20,000 pressure pumps and filter system pumping thought 40,000 of the water per hour. It's not atring algae but free floating, and it's a nightmare
Thanks for the great lesson .I planted my water hardy lilies in potting soil and covered with little stones ,(in a 250 gallon water fountain). Water looks okay but not very clear .plants doing well. Should I take them out and replant in sand and kittie litter ? I am planning on adding couple of fish later . Thank you for your help.
Yes, replant in plain soil that has no fertilizer. Then use aquatic fertilizing tabs pushed into the soil to feed the lilies. Sand and kitty litter is a great option too, but nothing works like plain soil. To get the best soil, dig a hole a foot deep, and scoop from the bottom of that hole. Good luck:) -Carl
It's an innocent question. I, unlike most pond builders, am a very well recognized industry leader on fish health. I would never make a recommendation that impairs fish health.
Excellent video! I have a new 1,200 gallon koi pond with some string algae and algae build-up. I have lots of water lettuce/hyacinths and several pots of lilies. My question is should I remove all the pots and remove the pond potting soil (never added fertilizer) and replace with small rocks and place back into the pond without the soil? Thank you sir! I am also ordering that Aquascape dry bacteria and SAB you recommended.
@@ColumbiaWaterGardens I just wanna say a huge THANK YOU!!!! Took your advice and removed all soil from the planters and used rocks and placed back into the pond and it’s clearing up so well in just two days! I can see the bottom and my fish again! I think I had way too much soil in too many pots in the water for only a 1,200 gal pond. THANK YOU SIR!!
So.... Where is part 2, or What solution did you end up using? I have this going on right now. I've used D-solve, & currently am adding Barley Straw Extract. Not seeing any results. I've been at it for 2-3 weeks now. Argh, I'm getting ready to fill it in....lol ......Please help!!! Should I add Hydrogen Peroxide...?
Yes, but to a minor affect. Think about it this way. Cows eat grass. Imagine a single cow in a lush meadow of say 100 acres. It'll never keep up with the grass. A fish in a pond is similar.
OK so I want to make sure I have this correct. You say dose 3x the amount the bottle shows every 3 days til the water clears (on the microbe lift pbl) so the bottle says 16 oz 1st dose then 2 more doses over a 4 week period of 6oz. Are you saying we need to put 48 oz in the pond each time every 3 days?
What pond product would you recommend to add the beneficial bacteria to the pond? I have a lot of string algae that is always growing and taking over the pond.
I had a hairy algea problem, put in a few pond plants few weeks ago. No more thick algew but my water is still green. Do i just wait and let the plants do their thing? And be patient or am i doing something wrong
@@ColumbiaWaterGardenswow that’s seriously cold man. I’m in the uk it’s finally starting to get warm here. I’m new to having a pond, need to build a waterfall filter soon to help keep water looking better
Use a photosynthetic bacteria like aquascape pro blend for lakes or microbelift pl pro. Triple the recommended dose every 3 days until clear, then dose regularly weekly from then on. Good luck, please subscribe and share this video. 🙏
Just made a little backyard pond, already noticing the water turning green and murky 3 days in. What beneficial bacteria should be put in the pond? I want to start the pond off right and get the beneficial bacteria starting to colonize as soon as i can
I have English Ivy that has dipped into my pond and started to root. Is this beneficial as to putting plants in the water. But my real question is will it harm the fish in the pond. Comets and Shubunkin.
People don't fully realize the impact that fertilizer has on algae. I don't think that the connection is made that algae is a photosynthetic plant, like a tomato bush. It needs sunlight, fertilizer, and boom! massive fast growth! In a pond, algae exists because it gets fed. Want to get rid of it? Remove it's food.
@@ColumbiaWaterGardens no plants or trees near by it sorted the green water but it looks like rust round edges now x I have sturgeon too and with them been on bottom bit worried for them
Good question. You should use aquatic planting soil or a mixture of sterile kitty litter and pea gravel with a fertilizer stake. Sounds like i have another video to produce. 😎👍🦅🤷♂️
Had my pond for 2 weeks and it has turned green, just put plants in yesterday "no potting soil"😅 , adding more bacteria today, is that all I need to do and then just wait?
Nice video but the fact is that bacteria from barley straw in whatever form is simply not enough for all ponds. The variables need to be factored in. Location: sunlight, rain runoffs, winds. Water quality: How often water changes, fish load ("Size " more important than number). Learning about the nitrogen cycle and so on. So after all that, you'll find that Uv light is the best solution. I went through it all .
@@rosepetaldrone3226 I'm not opposed to UV. Been doung this professionally for 13 years and in the hobby since i was 12. Im 49. You are absolutely right, but people like you and me are rare. Most people want the simple answer, and with everything we use there is science and biology that people need to understand. Great reply, thank you for your input!!! Do you think that enzymes are a positive compliment to a pond with UV, and why? :) -Carl
@@ColumbiaWaterGardens Tough question. You know ponds are all unique. Enzymes are beneficial when there's a large amount of solids (muck) that should be removed with spring "waking" the pond. And the Uv has it's place with killing any parasites and free floating algae ( not on 24h a day, would kill off good bacteria). So it all depends on that ponds particular needs. I like simple, I do one test Ammonia level. There's my start. I haven't had the need for enzymes. But I'm not a professional pond guy with a hundred different ponds to diagnose.
@@rosepetaldrone3226 Thanks for your input. We have 300 stops per month on our maintenance and repair route. We service a great diversity of ponds and are having great success in adding jet pumps to our clients ponds. They are cleaner and healthier for sure. One thing i have found regarding uvs is that if they are used to mask a problem they are detrimental. I dont mind adding them for sterilization purposes once the pond is balanced as an ecosystem. With concrete ponds we adopt, we oversize everything. Uv, filter, and have great success. Thanks for your comments.
I finished my pond. Crystal clear. Didn't add anything into it yet. About a week and it turned green. I have fish showing up in 10 days. Hopefully I can make sure it'll be all good for them. PH and alkaline levels are pretty high and I'm trying to resolve it.
Well direct sunlight never is good.... however green water is probably better and healthier for koi and baby fish then crystal clear water...surprisingly
Hey Jim, thanks for asking 👍 A pond like this needs a photosynthetic beneficial bacteria like Aquascape Pro Lake Bacteria or Microbelift PL PRO. Dose at 3x the recommended dosage every 3 days until clear, then follow up with weekly dosing.
@@ColumbiaWaterGardens im in the UK .I work in fish retail and have a pond. I have have a 14000l pond system crystal clear water but hair algae (its a new pond ) I have a 55w EA clarifier

Hello, yes we have new pond syndrome lol.. looks just like the pond on the veido..have treated the pond 2 x with powder beneficial bacteria..still no progress..please help
New to this video...having same issue outlined in this video. Using your method: a triple dose of Aquascape dry beneficial bacteria and a double dose of Aquascape SAB . Repeat every 3 days until clear (currently on second application). QUESTION: should I be cleaning the biofilters at the same time ... or more importantly, how OFTEN should I be cleaning the biofall filters? thanks!
This is a great question. I actually have a video on my channel showing how to clean a biofalls filter - you may want to watch it. Directly answering your question for the time being... When you begin this process, you want to start off with a clean biofalls, because a dirty biofalls can be actually feeding the very food that your algae craves. So by removing the food source, the biofalls become more of a filter for now. Once you acheive clarity, and you will, go ahead and clean the biofalls once more and fall into routine maintenance. You will know it is time to clean the biofalls when the sediment that is resting on top of the filter media is no longer reasonably containable and it begins to go downstream. Another side mention...... DONT FEED YOUR FISH while this is going on. Their food may also be a source of the problem and the fish will chomp away at the string algae that is forming around the pond as well as insects and larvae. I hope this helps you, and thanks for supporting my channel by subscribing and sharing helpful videos in your social media :) All the best, Carl
Thanks for your reply...yes I've watched the "how to video" I'm good at the how, it's the 'when' and 'how often".i read so many conflicting things on how often to clean these filters. So if I understand what you said: your recommendation is to clean the filters at the beginning of the "adding-beneficial bacteria & repeating every 3-days-til-clear-process", correct? that's what i've done, so I'm on the 3rd application (of the triple dose + double dose) tonight. So far, water hasn't cleared much but I'm gonna keep plugging along ... will keep you posted. APPRECIATE your response! It never ceases to amaze me. How arrogant people can be. In case you didn't know you had to learn all of this stuff some way. There's nothing stopping your client hell from going on, Google the internet and with a little common sense and research they can learn the exact same things you know. To belittle, your customers for actually educating themselves is a bit of a turn off your business. I would not want to do business with someone who looks down on me for educating myself.
Point made and accepted. I appreciate your candor as it holds me accountable to the way I may say things. What I failed to communicate clearly, and I accept full responsibility, is that often times people search for the answer they want, not the answer they need. The fact is that a pond in Indiana will perform differently than a pond in Wisconsin and Illinois. I've worked in all three states, and although the climate is similar, the soil is different. The impact soil has on a pond is rarely discussed, and in this video's example, the homeowner used incomplete Google advice and caused her pond to fail. I need to be more caring 💯%. I also need to explain the "why" better. Thank you for your well meaning comment. It hits home, and is well received. Happy ponding! -Carl
@@ColumbiaWaterGardens I appreciate that. Although in your defense, it's pretty stupid to leave the soil on the plants. You would think that'd be a common Sense thing.
You are overfeeding your fish, and the recent rain also fed your pond.

Call me at 888-713-7771 x4. If I don't answer, please leave a message and I'll tell you what to do. 😀
Those work too :) congratulations

Great video, and definitely some new information on the battle of "green water"
Was just checking in on our gilled buddies now that the ice is cleared and another successful winter for them! Can't wait to use your new information for the season!
Thanks for the great comment! What would you say is your greatest challenge with your pond that bugs you year after year?
@@ColumbiaWaterGardens
I would say when we get the green tint in the water (like small green particles) and the occasional blue heron :(
Last season I added aeration along with the filters and water fall but didn't go as heavy with the water hyacinths.
As your video points out about the dirt in the planters , my wife would set hanging baskets in the ponds to make up for not watering them occasionally :/
Now with your help I've got a whole new way of combatting this issue.
Thank you!!
It will work
Add a couple of salad plants. Will solve your problem in a few days. Salad is fast growing and consumes nutrients fast. Best thing.... eat it when full grown.
Thanks for the tips!
Thanks for watching, and please share this video :)

Great video! You solved my problem. Thank you so much !
Can you please do a video on sludge. Love your videos.
I'll work on that.
carl what would you recommend if a pond had new pond syndrome 12 years ago when it was built- and never treated?

Kitty litter with potting clay is a great medium
Hope you can help! :-) . I have a waterfall feature in my yard, and the basin has approx 2 to 3 feet of water in it. The elgae is taking over, and I have green sludge on sheet rocks and of course bright green water....how do I get rid of it? help please! :-). Joanna.

Good luck:)

Do you need a uv light or can you get clear water without one?
It depends on the pond. Ecosystem ponds don't normally need one, but concrete ponds do

what was the natural bacteria products that you used called ?
Aquascape dry bacteria and SAB
Thanks for the info! I put 2 potted plants made for pond but I will look they are in soil.

Are water Lillies okay to put in a farm pond and how much barley straw do I use?
Yes, and per the dosage recommendations.

Good question. You should use aquatic planting soil or a mixture of sterile kitty litter and pea gravel with a fertilizer stake.
Sounds like i have another video to produce. 😎👍🦅🤷♂️
I already have fish in my pond. Do i have to remove my fish before i put the beneficial bacteria
no
Look at Emporess of Dirt she had a great idea of clearing up pond water with pump and milk crate with quilting padding wrapped around it.
Thanks for the tip :)
I use this method all the time, only takes a week to clear 👍
Had my pond for 2 weeks and it has turned green, just put plants in yesterday "no potting soil"😅 , adding more bacteria today, is that all I need to do and then just wait?
I use a mixture that is explained in an earlier question on this thread. Double dose of bacteria mixed with SAB every 3 days until clear. :)
-Carl
Wow!!!!! Such an easy mistake to make but a very costly one
I finished my pond. Crystal clear. Didn't add anything into it yet. About a week and it turned green. I have fish showing up in 10 days. Hopefully I can make sure it'll be all good for them. PH and alkaline levels are pretty high and I'm trying to resolve it.
Add bacteria 3x the recommended dosage every 3rd day until clear.
Well direct sunlight never is good.... however green water is probably better and healthier for koi and baby fish then crystal clear water...surprisingly
There is truth to that.
When you say mix it with a bucket of pond water and dilute it what do you mean?
I mean, don't add directly to the pond. Mixt it, and slowly pour around the perimeter. :)
That's a great video, I guess :)
I've been add beneficial bacteria to my pond all summer but I got the pea soup syndrome
Try switching to a photosynthetic blend like microbelift pl pro
Photo synthetic blends do best in hard situations Like concrete ponds or bare liner ponds. Also in warmer climates.
What kind/brand of beneficial bacteria

I hope this helps you, and thanks for supporting my channel by subscribing and sharing helpful videos in your social media :)
All the best,
Carl

Competitive exclusion. You have to remove the food supply of the algae and the algae dies.
There can be so many factors involved. Overfeeding, overfeeding food high in phosphates, lack of nitrogen absorbing plants, planting pits that are fertilized.....
