This makes sooo much sense! Thank you so much. I had such a good ecosystem going but all of a sudden my fish ate the plants faster than they can grow. Once my plants were nearly gone my green water problem began. I also have some spots on the glass but I’m glad to have a solution to start with now.

Fun Fact - In Asia, and more so East Asia, green water is highly praised as one of the natural ways to tell water is healthy. This can then be turned into carpet algae which looks absolutely amazing! and if the walls are cleaned off; would look like grass fields slowly swaying with the water. This is usually done with goldfish, though the practice actually dates back thousands of years to when there were no electronic filters or bubblers.
However, understandable some people might not want it for aesthetic reasons.

I recommend taking a water sample from your aquarium, to your local pet store to get tested before making any changes. As a newbie I watched a video, and thought that I had algae bloom. I treated it with Algae Fix, and I didn’t have algae bloom at all. After getting my water tested, I found out that I had high nitrate, and ammonia levels.

Gonna try your floating plants technique cause I've got Algae bloom for a week plus already. Tried water changes to no effect. Was thinking of UV filters till you recommended plants. The only problem with floating plants is I have planted plants in the substrate and too many floating plants will block the planted ones. So gotta try it out. Thanks for the tips!

Add Anacharis to your list of plants. I had an algae bloom on my 20g because the plants I ordered didn't survive transit, so after putting them into my aquarium they never grew and never used up any of the nutrients, so it turned green. I threw some Anacharis in there and in 2 days it was almost clear again. That stuff grows fast and can easily grow floating.

Thank for such an informative video. My nano tank which was set up to raise baby guppies was absolutely fine for a few weeks and then out of nowhere the water turned green. I did water changes but it turned green overnight. Once the babies were big enough I moved them into my big tank (which has no such issues), and moved 5 male guppies into the nano tank. The tank has gravel bottom, live plants and sponge filter. On the last attempt at a water change, I used water from the big tank. It lasted a week before its back to green! On your suggestion I'm going to reduce the time the lights are on (which is currently around 10 hrs), and I have ordered some floating plants. I will let you know how I get on! I'm glad to know that the fish are not suffering living in their green environment! Thanks again for the advice 😊

This is great, thankyou :) I have a few different filter pads in mine and always change them out bi-monthly so there is still good bacteria. Im going off to buy some plants this evening as I'm having a little issue. Water is cloudy , its actually not crazy bad but my filters are sooo green within like a day. Do you reccomend I rinse all the filter pads I have before adding the plants? And also do you think if I planted some plants while adding the floating ones, will they do ok, or should I I wait until the algae is clear? I'm so glad I found this video!!!! Its way better than buying the green machine like I was wishing I didn't have to tell my husband about 😅🤭

I cleaned out a massive floating overgrowth of Elodea in my 20-gallon freshwater tank that's been up and running for years so that I could start surface plants, but with all the light suddenly able to penetrate down to the gravel, I got a huge algae bloom. I could put the Elodea back in and drastically cut down the light as you did, to knock back the algae, but wouldn't that also keep enough light from reaching the surface plants that I'm trying to get started?

I have plants, every thing was great, even have 2 out of the 3 plants you mentioned. But my water went cloudy and it was really hard to get rid of. But now it’s going green. Clean, water change, light is limited and low. Snails for algae and to help keep it clean but it goes completely green by the next day after each cleaning or water change. What do you think about a uv light to help keep algae in check?

Thnx bud, trying to have my tank like a mini pond, just an air pump and life cycle, its difficult. The goldfish kept picking at bottom growing plants and uprooting them so I stopped using. It is very difficult to get hold of cold water plecs or algea eaters, so I was at a loss as now have a lot of algea (snails don't do enough). Floating plants might well be the answer, thanks.

Excess light is often a trigger for Green Water algae blooms. One way to get rid of an outbreak is to temporarily eliminate light altogether. Turn the aquarium light off and wrap the tank with black plastic, trash can liners or blankets, and keep it covered for a few days.

Add Amazon Frogbit to the floating plants list. I've had great luck with that. It grows super fast; so fast that I have to prune it once a week from my nano tank. Just don't use a vinegar dip in Frogbit. A major post-cleaning algae bloom in my tank resulted in me dipping the Anubias, Java Moss & Frogbit. The other plants did fine, but the Frogbit all died off except for a single new leaf! But hey, this plant is so prolific that a single leaf is all I need to start a brand new crop. They are very attractive too & freshwater critters love them.

I feed them once a day, and make sure they finish all the food, and any left over food, (if it’s an Extreme amount), I take it out. I don’t understand why I still get an algae bloom.

Nice advice! I would add to your great video that they are also phosphate and silicate that can build up green water! Algae love phosphate (like every plants^^) and silicate (you can find silicate in the sand). So if you put a big sand bed you could have a green water stage the time for the algae to consume silicate ;)

I have a 10 gallon tank with 3 fake plants, 9 live plants, 3 amazon swards, 1 big java fern 3-6 small java ferns but they are in 2 sets of 3 each and 1 plant I cant remember what it is. I plan on getting a few more plants. And it has a hob filter but I am changing it to a double sponge Filter. I am thinking a floating plant, some small micro swards. Now my tank water is a very light green it's not bad at all.

Great advice, I hope it works for me. Glad you kept it basic, because I don't know a whole lot about aquariums. Weird, my tank was green, then one day all the algae cleared out of the water but attached to the surfaces. I scraped it off the sides and suctioned it off the live plants. However, within a week I had a messy green algae bloom again. Gotta try these surface plants.

There are 3 types of people: those who wants to get rid of green water, people who are raising daphnia, and people who want green water in one tank but have it in another.
