I had a nano tank that developed green water I could NOT get rid of for a month and a half, tried all the go-to things (except blackout because this is a high tech planted tank), but the only thing that worked was buying a green machine UV sterilizer. Just 4 nights of running and water is clear, then took the sterilizer out after those 4 days and it's been clear for months now. Can't recommend it enough if you want to cut out all of the headache and labor of constant water changes (while addressing the cause). I keep mine around as a remedy if it happens again.
Yeah, I thought Stephen did a good job with the beard timeline. Must be how folks used to calculate the passing of time before the advent of the calendar :)
100% water change work instantly. I think 100% water change is faster. After water change, just make sure to feed less, and not more than 8 hours of light a day and put in fast growing plant. Instant cure in one day.@@DansFish
Very detailed video on algae! We've seen 11 days of beard growth, it's time to let that beard grow out Dan! The blackout method works very well against green water!
I just used an algae cleaner. It didn't hurt my fish or snails at all. Purigen works wonders too. I do both. I did turn my lights off for a week and it did nothing. Id go with the cleaners for sure
You are correct that feeding the fish will result in nutrients that algae can use, but, IME, without light, the algae dies anyway. I always feed while the lights are off.
I see you were successful removing the green water. My tank is in a room that gets sunlight during the day. Not direct light but light from the windows on the other side of the room. What's the solution? Better filter? UVC filter? Appreciate the help.
VERY GOOD EXPLANATION :) THE GREEN SCREEN OPASETY IN ASSOCIATION TO THE SPEECH ABOUT GREEN WATER IS FUNNY IN MY OPINION :) THANK YOU FOR SHARING :) THANK YOU FROM ISRAEL :)
Beneficial bacteria are benthic...they adhere to surfaces. So they are not generally in the water column where they can get pumped into the UV sterilizer. And you fish certainly should not be pumped into the sterilizer or they very well might go blind...or worse.
It might take a week or two of darkness before green water is cleared. If the water is cloudy white instead of cloudy green, turning the lights out won't solve the problem because white cloudiness is caused by bacteria and protozoans, not algae.
Sure, some weirdos like us enjoy having pea-soup tanks because we like growing daphnia and raising up fry. But your average fishkeeper wants a nice, pretty display aquarium in their living room. This vid is for them.
Sure. There are chemicals that can work if that's your preference. Just be aware that every chemical you add will impact your aquarium's ecosystem in different ways.

Fantastic info delivered in an entertaining way! The beard detail to show the passage of time is brilliant! Love it, as always!

5:28 The fish screams were perfect! 😂
Great video! I’ve used the blackout method and it WORKS! (Also, nice editing!)
I think Stephen did a good job with the editing as well.

Thanks for this one, Dan. Truly an easy "problem" to fix with some patience. It's good to know it wont harm our fish.
BTW- the beard looks great!
Excellent job at keeping it simple and to the point.
great video, Dan! it seems like you took the feedback on your previous videos and ran with it. really excellent work!

We have some plants in the aquarium, do they survive without light?
I found your channel today and subscribed to it today 👍
Welcome aboard!
Great topic + info as always!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Do you still feed the fish while turning the light off? Feeding it won't promote more algae?

This was excellent and informative, I'm turning off that light!!! 🐠
Really helped ,
Good info as I have suddenly got one. I've had kite off, but. not as steady long solid time as you did .🎉
VERY GOOD EXPLANATION :)

Great information, thanks Dan
Amazing editing!!!!!
Will water changes help at all
Best fish tank plants
Thanks buddy ❤
Welcome 😊
Can alge also grow in tank water that doesn't have any lights on it? And are tank lights key in overall aquarium health?
I want green water for fry. I cannot seem to make it. One man’s “no” is another one’s “yes”!
Ain't that just the way it goes !
But Dan won't the UV sterilizer kill off my beneficial bacteria or make my fish go blind?

This Video Snailed It!!!! 🐌🥰
Very informative, thanks
Beard algae FTW!
Algae...if you can't beat it, join it!
Hi I recently have this happen . I capped with sand , blackout , turned lights off ! Still there ,? Can anyone one help me ?

Only problem I see is I don’t think you would want to blackout a heavily planted tank, would you ? For 2 weeks?
I have very heavily planted tanks, and you can absolutely turn the lights off to get rid of green water! Your plants will be just fine.
@@kelleyforeman thanks for that info. That’s why I love this forum. Now I know
@@bwood4505 if you want to go really hard core, you can even throw a sheet over your tank. Also, do some water changes!
I defer to Kelly in all things related to plants :)
Add a algae remover.
I've been trying to get green water in a tank for years ! it'll happen for a few days or a week , then its gone !
I did this and it works but then 4 days later came back
Repeat
I never turn the light on my tank , it always turn green
Yep! That can happen. Light + Nutrient Imbalance = Algae
Fix? A lot of people WANT green water! Daphnia is perfect as live fish food. Also, for fry.

What's weird about live food that doesn't even have time to start rotting?@@DansFish
Didn’t work for me
Just put in anti algae! Gone in 4 hours

Doas uv help?
Yessss
I added house plants with the roots inside the water I'm thinking that is causing my green water at the moment
