  • Our first Austin built Tesla! Overall I think it is good but it wasn't perfect. Only 3 main issues, all exterior. Rear bumper, front passenger fender, and driver side headlight. Am I being too picky?

A fun video idea for you would be to take your new gap tool to a Toyota dealership to measure gaps for comparison. Are Teslas really as bad as the internet says, or are they similar to other manufacturers? I know I would be interested in finding this out. 🕵‍♂

I don't think you're being too picky. The comments here claiming you're being too picky about panel gaps just make me shake my head, considering you said all the panel gaps are fine. As for that bumper that was obviously dropped or dinged, that's legit. I think some people might let the paint issue go, but since they already have to fix the bumper, they might as well fix the paint. When you spend that kind of money, you don't owe it to Tesla to give them a pass on quality issues.

need to be careful about having them fix paint issues because they will probably make it worse.

I took delivery of the Model Y, I call it “My Why”, from Austin. I love it. I didn’t buy FSD or EAP as they were too expensive for what they do. I had FSD on my previous M3P and it made me too nervous. I love the AP. I think I would change the bumper on your car and nothing else.

I probably wouldn't bother with most of these very minor issues myself, but as you've rightly pointed out, $50,000 for a car is a lot of money.
I am guilty of doing something similar when I go into expensive clothing shops. I am a good amateur seamstress, and I became so fed up with hems, zips, buttons, and seams coming undone that I now routinely check the finishing of a garment - despite the filthy looks from shop assistants. I dont mind paying a high price for an item, but it has to be topnotch quality. Therefore, I can completely understand your point of view.

If you treat it like a luxury car, sure, have all those small things corrected, BUT not everybody would. Also the upcoming 25K Tesla probably will not be perfect - it'll be a workhorse, not a pretty shiny toy thing. 🤷‍♂

It’s wonderful to have you back to posting your amazing breed of content and style! I do this Model Y, I just would love better quality control. It’s like no one cares what leaves the factory. Tesla makes money off those that don’t complain about small fit and finish defects. I wish that I wouldn’t be so picky, because I would be a happier and more relaxed person.

We have a 2023 Y from Freemont and it has the carpet by the rear seats as well. On the back cover it does provide more sound dampening and what we found for use lift the back which frees it from the holes in the back then slide it back.

I have a 2023 Model Y LR that is a Fremont build. The interior amenities (carpet, trim, trunk cover, etc.) is the same. I’m not particularly thrilled with the folding cover as it will not stay folded up when I’m trying to place things in the trunk. Other than that, I absolutely love my Y. I traded in a 2019 X that was the car from hell. I wish I had chosen the Performance . . . not so much for the speed, I just like the way it looks!! Thanks for sharing your Y.

I was surprised as well that he didn't look up how to stow the trunk cover. Lift up the edge at the rear seats and stow the creases down, push the cover forward. There's no lifting just a push.

These "defects" are ridiculously minor. I just bought a Honda Ridgeline and there are gap differences. These are still "off the rack" cars. I dont know what these folks expect. As long as the paint isnt rubbing or things are sticking, outside of major issues chill out.

My 2018 Red Model 3 has two ugly fisheyes in the front hood’s paint. I really didn’t want a brand new car with questionable repainting done because I hope to keep my car a long time. Everything is covered in clear paint protection film so it’s not as obvious to me now. I hated waited years for my Model 3 and I didn’t want to wait any longer. They would only give me another car if I waited back in line, paid the new higher prices and gave up lifetime data. Thankfully there are a lot of electric car choices now and DC fast charging is getting better everyday. Tesla makes awesome cars for people that are not perfectionists!

This gap stuff is just silly at this point. Until Tesla, almost nobody cared about this stuff. These tolerances are normal on EVERY car made. Sure, you can perfect them over time, but it makes zero difference to the way it looks or operates. So yes, you're being WAY too picky. The rear bumper thing is legit, but also something I'd not waste time and materials worrying about.

  • @randreas69

Yes, you are extremely too picky...
Some things to take in consideration, that a tesla costs 50,000 its not the same because you are paying for a car that doesn't need any service, but you have to see the cost of the vehicle for the time you are planning to have it. If you will have it for 10 years you divide the cost and you will have the real cost of your vehicle, the thing is that you are paying the cost of ownership in advance.
If you are having the car only for one or two years, yes its very expensive.
By the way, have you checked the gaps with the same tool on a brand new BMW or a Mercedes??? You'll be surprised...

    • @xbrizzcakez
