To this day, I still say, "Looks like he hit the tree, Jim." in reference to something going stupidly wrong. Of course, no one around me has any clue what I'm talking about. Thanks for the memories!

From my vantage point, it looks safely in the fairway.
I still quote World Class Leaderboard while playing other golf games, especially the arcade cabinets like Tee’d Off (both the Gottlieb pinball and the Tecmo video game of the same name), Golden Tee ‘98, Mario’s Golf and NEO Turf Masters. I have to explain my outbursts to other people too often but occasionally someone will remember the game and sounds.

The "looks like he hit the tree Jim" announcer guy is Kevin Jones, brother of Chris Jones (AKA Tex Murphy). Kevin was also Mac Malden in the Tex Murphy games.
Passed away a few years ago. RIP.

The first time I ever fired up this game on my old 386 back in the day, the sound was so amazing to me. The bird noises gave me the most vivid feeling of "atmosphere" or "ambiance" I ever felt coming from a game at that time. I never could have imagined it would be a golf game of all things to give me that experience!

Every time I buy an old computer this game is ALWAYS part of the bundle. Hell I can see an Atari ST copy in the corner of my eye as I type this!!!
But the Leader Board games always felt like a "Dad" game to me, the game your Dad would buy during his short lived interest in computers, before goign back to their normal hobby of sleeping.

I played this a lot on C64. It helped me a lot knowing the maximum ranges on the clubs you are hitting the ball with, and selecting the right one matching closest to the distance. Of course if you had to land the ball on an island halfway trough or in a bend on a course, you had to use the "good ol' Eyeball MK.II" to judge the distance for the perfect shot.
So many hours, all well spent with this game in the early 90's. More than I can say about some more modern games of today which seem to lose their magic after a few hours of monotony. Of course, I am not sure how much can be attributed to the fact there weren't many 3D games with beautiful graphics out there when Leaderboard Golf was released, but it sure did a great job giving you the feeling of "being there". In Leaderboard Golf, you didn't just "play golf". You were on an adventure. And if you had friends with you, even better. They just don't make games like these anymore.

Yeah, PC speaker provided digital audio was possible, but very hardware intensive. There was even a driver for Windows 3.1 that allowed you to play digital sounds through the PC Speaker. However, Windows itself would freeze until the sound finished playing, since it pretty much required the full CPU's attention.

Oh, man. I was born in 1991, and until a couple years ago, my grandparents had an old IBM PS/1 computer from probably 1989 that I still played old games on. And one game that I remembered from childhood but was no longer there in recent years was a golf game, which I'm pretty sure was this one. I didn't read/understand English back then, so the title didn't ring a bell, but the title screen seriously jogged my memory. I remember trying to puzzle out what most of the audio was, but I definitely remember the "looks like he hit the tree, Jim" one. It frustrated my father and brother a lot.

Just like you said, I totally fantasized about what's behind those trees and whatnot ("Colorado" also had me doing that, maybe you could review that game some time?). Had some pretty good hot-seat multiplayer fun with my friends playing this. I normally won because I could play all day whereas they would only see a computer when at my place ... but I like to think I was just that good :D Thanks for the nostalgia, Clint!

I had an old IBM Personal Computer 2 model 25 and this was one of the few if not the only game on it. I didn't know about the EGA graphics, and literally always wondered why the colors were so strange, I mean, why did the clouds have to be neon green? Well just today playing it in dosbox online I tried the other graphics settings to finally discover I could have sort of normal looking colors in this game! Fantastic. Like others have said, so many memories with this game and glad to see that "Looks like he hit the tree, Jim" is seared into so many other people's minds.

I mean I've played a lot of DOS games and now days I usually I bump into old games from time to time, but that one was off my radar for a long time, mostly because golf isn't my thing really. Even though it wasn't something spectacular, I liked the game mechanics, something so many golf games couldn't convince me. To this date, I still think it is more addictive and far better than any other golf game I've ever played.

Wow that RealSound is incredible! Never knew that was possible from the PC speaker. I Wiki'd it and see that RealSound was sadly only used in a handful of games. Would love to see you cover some of the others to hear/learn more about it. Like Mean Streets for example, which I see is a Tex Murphy game (I've never played a Tex Murphy but I think I've read they're good) and doesn't seem to have much YT coverage. Or even better, an Oddware episode dedicated to RealSound?

You can get past the security key for the commodore version if you have the cassette drive plugged in and you hit play while it loads. No tape necessary!

Shot distance is related to the club you choose, the power is relative to that club. Awesome Golf on the Atari Lynx is well worth checking

    Them sweet ass EGA graphics.
Those are actually nice graphics for EGA, and loving the pseudo 3d effects.
Well my first golf game was Neo Turf Masters, not the most professional game, but it's a damn good game!

HAHA! A version of this was also one the first sport games I ever owned back in 1987 or 88. Only that it was for my then Atari ST.
Leader Board by Access Software, ST, 1986, Trusteft's Retro Weekend
I STILL play the game. Rarely, but I do.

Nice, I used to play this on C64. We didn't have that weird dongle thing either... we had other ways to circumvent the copy protection. What is that dongle anyway? Looked like just a resistor connecting two pins on the tape deck connector.

That's pretty much exactly what it is, yeah. It sent some kind of data or signal through the datasette edge connector while the floppy drive loaded the game.

Lazy Game Reviews I believe that pressing the Play button on an actual Datasette would fool the game into believing that you had the dongle.

This game looks vaguely familiar to me...
Elegant name, too; your review even moreso.

Watched this while making an Augusta-style pimiento cheese sandwich. Your comments about the immersiveness of the game resonate with me greatly.
    I love you.
