    Raccoons are the worst. My first thought seeing them in daylight is does it have rabies? I’m aware of the no fence urine sprays but never thought or heard about using just ammonia. Excellent video. Lots of great info here. I’ve had many of these same struggles. Keeping chickens alive can become quite an endeavor 😁👍👍

    • @WelcometoChickenlandia
      @WelcometoChickenlandia  5 лет назад +3

      Probably not rabies, but most likely babies (see what I did there?). 🤣🐼
      After using some urine sprays I don’t like it as much as ammonia. Ammonia will even make rats move out but it’s not great for chickens to breathe it in so that creates a dilemma! It’s definitely an ongoing battle but yeah, we gotta keep these chickens alive! ❤️🐔❤️

    I got 15 chickens in spring and over the course of 2 months they all got killed. We dealt with about 7 attacks. First was a stray dog, then a fox, then a raccoon, then weasels until all were gone.. And then a weasel killed one of my rabbits. It was my first time with chickens. I felt so guilty for the longest time and still do a bit. But we tried everything me could.. We are working on building a better coop and run. We are going to try again next year. I am only 12. What an eventful year..
    Edit: This video helped me a lot! Thank you!

      Oh my goodness that is so hard. I totally understand about the guilt but I do want to tell you that your exact scenario has happened to the best of us, even me! Predators are hard to handle, and so much of what we do is trial and error and tough lessons. I hope you get chickens again and have an awesome set up where you don’t have to worry. ❤️ Good luck!

    We live in the mountains and have all the same predators along with the occasional mountain lion, bear and rattlesnake. About a year and a half ago, we finally invested in a metal carport as a run and put 1/2" hardware cloth on everything, including burying an apron around the whole run. My coop is in the run as well, so they are very safe, especially at night when locked in the coop. It did cost a lot of money, but after almost 20 years of chicken keeping, we decided the investment was worth it and we have had no breeches so far. Since the structure has a solid metal roof the chickens are also protected from the snow and rain, as well as flying predators and they can be outside everyday of the year. It also makes it much easier for me to care for them as I am chronically ill and I was struggling to keep them safe and clean in our previous set up.

    • @WelcometoChickenlandia
      @WelcometoChickenlandia  5 лет назад

      Bears and mountain lions are so hard! I hate that hardwire mesh is so expensive. I'm sure if it were more affordable that more people would use it. And yes, having the security is so nice when you aren't feeling 100%! We had the flu last year and it was tough getting up to lock up the chickens!
      Thanks so much for watching. :-)

    your chickens are so cute, I understand predators, my chickens are forced to stay in a covered run during the winter, my one chicken was in her usual spot in the bushes/weeds, and a hawk was easily able to drop from a branch right on top of her, she felt safe there because she and the flock would spend time there when the leaves were there, and because I heard the commotion I ran over there (I had them out because my run collapsed and I was fixingit and did not want them under foot getting stepped or kicked by me), because I was there I was able to scare the hawk away and she only had minor scratches and was okay (I thought she would need to be put out of her misery)but she started to eat after the second day and I knew she was doing okay. now the run is fixed and they are grounded from being out and about until spring. another method is peeing around the coop and run area andmy dog does too. come spring the run will be changed and extra fencing put up to protect them while in the run in the spring/summer. I wont be allowing them out until the afternoon I lost chickens last year because I would let them out in the morning and htey would lay their eggs in weeds and try to hatch them (I have no roo)and I couldnt find them to bring theminto the coop at night so they got attacked. I only found feathers. so no free range until they are done layingtheir eggs in the coop. I lost my rhode island red and my astolorp (my favorite chicken they are so friendly) I lost my molly (polish) because of a hawk i clipped her bonnet so she could see but I dont think her problem was just that she seemed to be dumb, she did not stay with the flock I would find her alone in the yard, so I wont be getting polish as I hate to keep crittors locked up. your chickens are glad to be owned by you. you take your responsilbity seriously and sodo I hence more improvements I need to do this spring. the coop is secure no predators have gotten in there yet. but I do check the coop form time to time to see if any thing has gotten lose or anything chewing holes. so far so good.

      Yeah I remember coming across them digging through garbage late at night. It’s not a sound I like to hear! The babies are cute, though lol.

    Are there any lock styles that you would suggest to help keep raccoons out? I am a beginner and I know what I have is not sufficient - simple wood lever in front of our gate to the chicken run. I don’t want to have to put an actual lock on my gate that I have to fumble with every day if that’s possible.

      Great question! I have a barrel bolt up high on my door where a raccoon can't reach it. In the past, I have added a karabiner to an existing latch to reinforce it. You're probably right that the lever will be easy for a raccoon to maneuver. They are so clever, unfortunately!

      Haha yes my neighbors are amazing but I’m pretty sure they think I’m crazy LOL. Ammonia will deter rats, but the only problem with that is that rats usually hang out pretty close to chickens and you don’t want chickens breathing it in. Your best bet with rats is to remove their food and water source. It’s best to only feed the chooks what they will eat before afternoon time, so that there are no tempting morsels around for rats to enjoy. ❤️🐭❤️
