One of the reasons that I value you to the degree that I do….is your compassion. Not just for the chickens, but the wild animals as well. THANK YOU for being decent.
I've watched several of your videos today that led me to this video. I lost my beloved rooster Thursday to a predator. Probably a coyote. I have been crushed. My heart has just ached. Until I watched this video. He had a good life and he was loved. Thank you for helping me get beyond the heartache.

After stressful day at work I love coming home and chilling out with my Silver laced wyandotte hens and Golden laced wyandotte hens with one silver laced rooster watching them forage around and sometimes pecking at my boots. Thanks for sharing knowledge protecting our flocks.
Ive tried so hard to protect my girls! I am using the ammonia in a old container we drilled some holes in and put a soaked rag inside. I placed it about 10 ft away from my coop where our property backs uo to woods. I so glad you are back to doing videos!!!!
I am new to chickens this year! I have 9, month old chicks that I’m rearing and am building their outside home now. I live in Eastern Washington State. I love your videos and have learned so much. I absolutely agree with your natural approach at living with predators. They are only doing their own natural thing and we need to protect our domestic animals from them. Thankyou for your great and very fun videos!

I admire 💛 your acknowledgement for the eco system. I had to learn this too. My fave Americana Diva was attacked by a fox a year ago & she passed. So upsetting to hear about the harm done to your flock, especially your little special needs duck. But I admire your take on the predators in the area. As you said they are only trying to survive and we encroach on their habitat. Best of luck to you and your remaining flock!!
I've been told another method for chasing away weasels which is confirmed by your video ! You pee in a bowl and pour it in front of the yard, the gate, fence or the chicken coop. Urine containes ammonia so it makes sense. :)) It's an option ! :)
Yes, predators dont care who is around when their hungry. I had a hawk almost get my Easter egger as I was working on something not too far away. Luckily I was able to run over like a mad woman screaming and waving my arms then it let go of my chicken, Reba! She was shaken up and had some blood by her eye, but she was ok. After that, I've been so paranoid and only let them free range when I can watch them "like a hawk"....🤣👍 I love my girls!
When it happened here I came running out of the house with a broom and dust pan, screaming! 🤣 I’m sure my neighbors didn’t know what in the world was happening.
Thank you for the video! We have a few raccoons that visit our backyard, along with our three chickens. While we adore raccoons, they did manage to take two of our chickens. Despite this, we don’t want to get rid of them; instead, we’ve decided to reinforce our chicken coop to keep everyone safe. We actually enjoy watching the raccoons and chickens coexist. Raccoons typically don’t stay long-they move on in search of easier meals. My 13-year-old daughter insisted that we not harm the raccoons, so we built a stronger coop. Now, with the changes in place, our whole family is happy in the end.
We are six years into our chicken journey, but I am still learning new things from you all the time. Thank you for sharing all your great tips and tricks with us. You are a wonderful chicken educator!
I'm with you 100%. The animals are just doing what they do. Trying to survive. It's our job to keep our animals safe. Those animals are there because their food is there. If they're gone, it throws the balance off. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge and teaching us all how to do things the natural way, without harming others. ❤️❤️❤️
Thanks for your advice about the ammonia! Just got 3 hens a few weeks ago and a fox tried to get them early this morning and terrified them, and my daughters chased it off!

I'm so sorry that happened to you! Thank you for this great tip. I love your view on being better protected vs killing or relocating. I'm 100% with you. Love your channel. Checking out your vid on MUD next. I, too, live in the PNW (SWW near Oly). Wet wet wet wet weeeeeeeeetttttt..... Hahahaha.
Teddy is dorbz! Sorry about your babies, we had the same thing happen in Kansas. I am currently restarting chickens after a few years off, and I just saw a raccoon around the house last week. I have and love my house possums, but the raccoon is going to be live-trapped and relocated only because s/he has decided to live under the house, and that just isn't going to work. Thanks for all your videos!
Glad you shared this. Right now the most I have are possums and mice. Obviously the possums aren't doing a very good job with the mice and outdoor cats that I feed from neighborhood aren't really eradicating the mice either. There have been some bobcats, raccoons and such around I've heard people reporting but so far haven't seen them. Seems like the animals are all hungry this time of year and needing to eat. Really prefer not to harm them but just dissuade them from eating my chickens. I usually have dry cat food out and the possums do make sure to clean all that up but prefer they eat that and not my chickens when their out. I will keep the ammonia in mind for around their area. Thanks for sharing this.
Good info. We had racoons invade our coop one winter. It was a literal bloodbath enhanced by the white snow. It completely changed our lifestyle. Now, we always make sure the chickens are safely locked inside the coop every night.
I've been so nervous about putting the baby chickens in the coop because we see fox every night here we live in the woods like 10 ta 15 mins to a town around us this helped so much thank you
Thank you Madam President. I’m about to expand my coop but I cannot afford the hardware cloth, which I used for my run, for the expansion, only much weaker chicken wire ☹️ I’m glad to learn this ammonia trick. Do you have any suggestions besides this to help me with protecting my girls. I live waaay out in the boonies and we have more predators than I can count. I’m really concerned about the vulnerability that I may leaving my feathered family and it would crush me to lose any of them. Also, I’m curious about what you use as a barrier under your wood fence. Thank you for all the education that you’ve provided myself and others. I REALLY look up to you 💕 P.S. I love your new intro but then again I loved your previous ones
Thank you! If I were you and if you can swing it, I would double up on the chicken wire. You can do that around the fencing as well. It's not as strong as hardwire mesh but it's decent, and you can layer it so that the holes are smaller. It's more money but still cheaper than hardwire cloth. You can also bury thin slabs of wood down so they can't dig in, but it would need to be replaced sooner than later so I don't know how cost effective it would be in the long run. Always check craigslist and free cycle groups because you never know!
@@WelcometoChickenlandia That’s a great suggestion! I got a huge roll of 5’ tall chicken wire so I can definitely double up the wire. I also have some leftover hardwire mesh that I will cut in strips and skirt down and outward around the base of the chicken wire. I’m thinking of buying some inexpensive pavers and put those on top of the buried skirting. Thank you for replying and getting my wheels a turning. God bless!
I feel really lucky, so far my biggest annoyances are chipmunks and some Thrush, even though we live in a high predator area surrounded by woods. But, we use an enclosed run and the coop is super secure.
I use motion censor lights and also have white Christmas lights on the coop from dusk til dawn. I have seen the fox on my cameras walk up to the coop, the motion light clicks on, and he takes off. Now I know they might get smart to it, but so far it has worked. That hasn’t stopped the raccoons unfortunately. They don’t care. Fortunately my runs/coops are Fort Knox.
I'm in San Francisco and they definitely come around in the day. They kept pooping near an exterior wall. I finally realized how their paws are so delicate. I cleaned up the area and put lots of pine cones. End of problem.
I’ve had raccoons come out in day hours many time and slaughter my girls. Always in spring early summer. Nursing mama raccoons was my guess. Great info!
Something grabbed one of my hens and broke her wing off. All I can think is, she was near the fence and something grabbed her and tried to pull her thru and only got a wing. Shes fine, but there is just the stump of a wing on one side. I trimmed the feathers on the other side to help her be more balanced.. My question is : Will her wing grow back..
Peppermint oil works really well to keep the critters away...I've even used chopped up original Irish spring soap bars....lol....Thanks for the videos.
I n not allowed a rooster where I live , so have to buy in hens I only buy from two breeders who vaccinate all hens pedigree breeds and hybrids to full commercial standards I’m in the UK so they are vaccinated against all diseases that could affect hens in the UK including salmonella: Love the beautiful and clear information you pass on us all. With love to yours and your delightful flock.
How does your chickens and other animals react to the ammonia smell? Do you think it may help protect outdoor cats, without getting the cats to leave as well? So sorry about the loss of your birds!!
You can takee an electric pulseing hot box for dogs or small predators. Use 1/2 inch PVC tubing drill holes 2- 6-12 inches from ground string hot wire thru holes .pull tight and you've got 24/7 defense.that won't kill but repels .make sure it's pulseing not constant
I found my duck this morning tore open and its been are only lasting duck for a while. I new i should have tried harder to get him in his pin but he just loves being out in his pond. I don't understand how I don't hear a struggle at night when it was close to the house this time. I feel so bad when this happens, like is there a way to prevent it or hear the attacks.
OMG you have a hairless dog😍🥰. My special needs duck had a run in with a racoon, fortunately she survived, took lots of physical therapy to get her back to where she was before the incident. Taking a LOT more precautions now.
@@WelcometoChickenlandia We just had a red tail hawk come in our back yard, we was very lucky it didn't get and of our chickens. Our back yard is not big so I didn't think a red tail would ever try to get out chickens but I was wrong 🥴 .
I lost my whole flock to a new dog in the neighborhood that I didn't know about until it was too late. 😪 I have just built a large run (I feel confident the coop is secure) from 10 x 6 chain link panels. I cant afford to cover it all in hardware cloth. But I have a ton of chicken wire! Will that be sufficient? Two feet up and two feet out! All the gates have been secured with an apron and hardware cloth. The run is covered by heavy plastic bird netting, not the flimsy stuff for berries. More like a deer fence with 1x3/4 in holes. Will this be enough?
@@WelcometoChickenlandia except if it’s pods from a magnolia tree don’t ask .. cutting it down didn’t go my way .. how many people did u have helping with that netting it was just us two , n we ended up sending that expensive netting back ... was no way to hang it without strangling each other first
@@JudyZimShadHomesteader I hope you get the magnolia stump removed too. We did because I was going to put a bird bath or feeder on it. It is still alive and keeps growing new branches and leaves.
A raccoon tore through metal hardware cloth in our chicken coop window and killed a bunch of chickens. Plastic only works to keep flying birds out of the chicken yard. Raccoons are excursions in our area bcz people release them near our house that were caught in other areas causing problems. We caught 23 in a few weeks, sometimes 2 a day for several days in a row and I can assure you they were not the same ones.
Not only do we not want to disturb an ecosystem but the raccoon is only doing what the raccoon has instincts to do in order to survive. How can you ever blame someone or some creature just for being themselves, being what they are designed to be. Great vid. Thank you for the tip.
Thanks for the great advice. I have a problem with eggs going missing during the night all sealed up except for an area that a cat might fit also no evidence of egg shells or dead chicken's. Any idea what can carry eggs up a wall?
Vanessa here 👋 I'm thinking I may have to cull my velvet. Do you know the best way that won't cause any pain or anxiety? Almost my whole flock got over avian pocks. I had to lance her eye and I filled all of them up with oragano, garlic, colloidal silver. Toothpast saved the rest of the flock 🤷♀️ she is the bottom of the pecking order poor girl. I hate to even think about it😭 She seemed like she was getting better. She can see again
I’m so sorry. It sounds like you gave her really good care. There are many videos on humanely culling chickens here on RUclips. You can give them the flower remedy Rescue Remedy to help with the stress, or if you can find another flower essence combo that helps with passing that would be great. ❤️
I had a scrawny young raccoon try to go after my chickens the first night I put em outside. Welded wire fencing is key and having a trail cam pointed at the coop is not a bad idea either. I dug down and put cinder blocks into the ground also to keep animals from digging but their way in but I've heard laying fencing on the ground works also
Actually, ammonia is not particularly toxic unless you mix it with bleach. Your body makes ammonia basically as a byproduct of the food we eat. It's in your urine, which incidentally can be used in place of ammonia, if you're not squeamish about that sort of thing. Probably with better results.
I have a bobcat issue. I have netting up but it jumps through it. I can't use hardware cloth for the top because of the way my run is set up. I will try that ammonia trick until I can trap it! We have had bobcats ever since I got chickens but this one is out at all hours of the day. I start throwing old eggs into the woods so maybe she can feed her babies more idk.
Oh man! Have you contacted your local wildlife rescue? That’s what I would do at this point. They may be able to give you some resources or even trap and relocate if it’s coming into your yard like that. Good luck!
Really off the wall question here. I used mostly untreated wood in my run. I started staining it today but realized how hard it was with all that hardware cloth stapled on the wood. So I decided to use a pump sprayer to cover the wood. The chicks still live inside but I will sometimes put them out in the run to get acclimated. I’ll be finishing up the stain tomorrow morning and was wondering how long should I wait before letting the chickens back out in the run after paint the stain? I’m guessing they are sensitive to things and I don’t want to take any chances
One of the reasons that I value you to the degree that I do….is your compassion. Not just for the chickens, but the wild animals as well. THANK YOU for being decent.

You’re so welcome!!
God bless!
You can also put lights up and it makes predators go away as soon as the light comes on !! ...even bears will run away. 👍👍
Great idea!!
I had a mother raccoon and three babies
Hanging off a bird feeder on the back porch when I turn the light on they just looked at me
I feel really lucky, so far my biggest annoyances are chipmunks and some Thrush, even though we live in a high predator area surrounded by woods. But, we use an enclosed run and the coop is super secure.
If you put a wildlife camera out there, you will be surprised at what’s coming around! 👀
One thing I know is predators always go for the easiest meal. Defenses up. I like how happy and bubbly you are.
End of problem.
any info on the netting you used to cover your chickens?
I’ve had raccoons come out in day hours many time and slaughter my girls. Always in spring early summer. Nursing mama raccoons was my guess.
Great info!
Yes it's awful! I'm sorry that happened.
Where the hens free ranging hen it hapend ir in the coop? I am sorry to hear.
Inclusive and stress free way to own chickens 🙌
Something grabbed one of my hens and broke her wing off. All I can think is, she was near the fence and something grabbed her and tried to pull her thru and only got a wing.
Shes fine, but there is just the stump of a wing on one side. I trimmed the feathers on the other side to help her be more balanced..
My question is : Will her wing grow back..
Peppermint oil works really well to keep the critters away...I've even used chopped up original Irish spring soap bars....lol....Thanks for the videos.
I n not allowed a rooster where I live , so have to buy in hens I only buy from two breeders who vaccinate all hens pedigree breeds and hybrids to full commercial standards I’m in the UK so they are vaccinated against all diseases that could affect hens in the UK including salmonella:
Love the beautiful and clear information you pass on us all.
With love to yours and your delightful flock.
What about dog urine? My 90lb male dog likes to urinate near my run. Is he marking the area to keep away other animals?
I think if he is neutered it won't be as strong of a deterrent but yes, dogs spray in a territorial way out of instinct. He's a big dog!
Thank you for this video. Very helpful. What about black snakes?
What kind of netting did you use, and where did you get it?
I totally agree, great solution.
Thanks!
I have a husky that walks the perimeter of my yard and pees on everything, would this suffice you think?
Mt Baker in the beginning of video? I am from Bellingham. Live in Florida now ☀️🌴🩴🌊
OMG you have a hairless dog😍🥰. My special needs duck had a run in with a racoon, fortunately she survived, took lots of physical therapy to get her back to where she was before the incident. Taking a LOT more precautions now.
Hello, I'm having issues with squirrels. Would this help them stay away?
The squirrels are destroying my chicken coop
My chicks have been attaked 2times in 1month by a Mongoose. I have lost 3chickens. Any idea how how I can catch it? Am in the east of Africa.
Where did you get your netting and how did you get it to stay up so high?
There’s a link for it in the description! It was attached to the house (I moved recently).
@@WelcometoChickenlandia
We just had a red tail hawk come in our back yard, we was very lucky it didn't get and of our chickens. Our back yard is not big so I didn't think a red tail would ever try to get out chickens but I was wrong 🥴 .
I lost my whole flock to a new dog in the neighborhood that I didn't know about until it was too late. 😪
I have just built a large run (I feel confident the coop is secure) from 10 x 6 chain link panels.
Great message 🤗
What do you do to keep your ceiling-netting clean? from tree leaves, bugs, etc.
You know, it really doesn’t get stuff on it and when it does, it usually just blows away with the wind!
@@WelcometoChickenlandia except if it’s pods from a magnolia tree don’t ask .. cutting it down didn’t go my way .. how many people did u have helping with that netting it was just us two , n we ended up sending that expensive netting back ... was no way to hang it without strangling each other first
@@JudyZimShadHomesteader
Thanks for the warning about 2 people hanging out netting. I was thinking of going that way. I will have to think again.
Have you had a good snowfall yet?
@@JudyZimShadHomesteader
I hope you get the magnolia stump removed too.
Impressive video and very informative!
Thank you so much!!!
Not only do we not want to disturb an ecosystem but the raccoon is only doing what the raccoon has instincts to do in order to survive. How can you ever blame someone or some creature just for being themselves, being what they are designed to be. Great vid. Thank you for the tip.
Totally! I love your comment. I wish more people felt this way. Toward coyotes and wolves too. 👍
You were I live in our country certain parts you cant have animals in city limits but I choice to move further out so we could plant and have animals
I hate to even think about it😭
She seemed like she was getting better. She can see again
I’m so sorry. It sounds like you gave her really good care. There are many videos on humanely culling chickens here on RUclips. You can give them the flower remedy Rescue Remedy to help with the stress, or if you can find another flower essence combo that helps with passing that would be great. ❤️
Thank you so much💓 this is a hard one. My velvet was a great girl.
I had a scrawny young raccoon try to go after my chickens the first night I put em outside. Welded wire fencing is key and having a trail cam pointed at the coop is not a bad idea either. I dug down and put cinder blocks into the ground also to keep animals from digging but their way in but I've heard laying fencing on the ground works also
How often do u need to refresh the ammonia rags
Thank you so much!
Big doggo works great for me 😊
How long does one rag soaked with ammonia last for ?
It depends on your environment but I would try to replenish them every couple of weeks.
@@WelcometoChickenlandia thanks
Actually, ammonia is not particularly toxic unless you mix it with bleach. Your body makes ammonia basically as a byproduct of the food we eat. It's in your urine, which incidentally can be used in place of ammonia, if you're not squeamish about that sort of thing. Probably with better results.
What is the netting made of?
Thanks for the tips
So the netting makes hawks and raccoons unable to get in?
