I do have a quick question .. I am not trying to have baby chicks at all right now or maybe ever( not sure about ever lol) but I have a beautiful Easter Egger Ro. He is constantly breeding my girls! 😅they are missing all kinds of feathers on there backs!! ( plus they are molting now so it looks worse) I don’t want to get rid of him. He watches over them like he should and is their protector ( I think) He is also part of my original flock. I’m just not sure what to do. Sometimes I wonder what it would be like to have my girls not jumped on constantly… the whole group is just now a year old including him. … I have two that are part of the flock but I got them at a poultry show. Can you give me some advice on this? Thanks So much♥️Thank you Dalia♥️

You tried to heal her, to keep her with you and continue her happy life. You ALWAYS do what is best for your chickens. No one can blame you for trying to help her get better. My heart hurts for you,. Accepting death is NEVER easy and sometimes we have to try just for the sake of saying we did all we could. Please don't beat yourself over trying to help her. She lived her best life with you! I can’t help it. I lost one of my girls last week… quarantined her and gave her some love… said a prayer and all the girls came and stood around her pen and then walked away and little girl passed… it was a moment I’ll never forget. As if they were saying goodbye and it was quick. True story. You’re doing great, she was a beautiful chicken.

I researched chickens for 2 months. I've had them a couple of times in the past, but my knowledge was zilch. I found you, watched most if not all of your videos, plus hundreds of others, and bought your book.
In May, I bought 9 Australorps from a reputable breeder and she sold me 3x4 day olds with 6x2 wk olds telling me they'll be fine together. I lost the 3 younger ones, saved one of the older ones with your advice in your book and now, all are so healthy at 9 weeks old.
They are livestock, not pets. They are spoilt rotten. Every morning I cook them something special (this morning it was maringa leaves, thyme, bit of rice, bit of pumpkin with 2 scrambled eggs). Plus their grower grains 24/7. They forage my food forest (slowly extending their search while keeping hidden from the magpies who swoop them). I've had to net a few plants to keep them from completely destroying them. They love my sorrel and horseradish leaves - the sorrel is now protected. But most things they eat a bit of this and that and move on.
I bought a "large" coop kit that would have been lucky to hold 2 chickens, so I built a massive extension (mostly from house recycled renovation scraps - the snake proof wire was the major cost), 3.5M x 1.5M, with 4.5M of roosts with trays underneath and a little door to sweep it out. I'm using sand from the beach for their floor. They are now sleeping (winter) in the attached kit coop and I had to let them take over one of the hatchery alcoves as 6 of them outgrew the main area. I've put the flat chick heater in there to help keep them warmer at night.
At 9.5 weeks, the rooster is trying to crow and I'm pretty sure the other 5 are hens. I'm so lucky. I'll wait until they produce their own babies and grow the peep up to 10 hens.
I cut down my overgrown lemon grass, mulched it and put it in their coop. I'm planting lots of lemon grass starts around so that I can give them lemon grass year round. There's a pile in the other garden bed that they nap on in the afternoons, away from the flies. Everything smells like lemons.
I will eat the older ones and the extra roosters. In my favorite movie, Avatar, she thanked the animals she killed for giving her their life and nourishment. With that attitude, I think I can do it. I'm 71, a woman, and am doing this alone on my 1/4 acre little food forest with a 6' high fence around the house, one block from the beach. My 2 chihuahuas are very protective of the chicks. My neighbors are excited to have a crowing rooster, although he is illegal to keep. I bought a rooster choker I will try to use, cruel, but he can live if he remains quieter. And the chickens are busy digging up around my larger plants and trees. It's a perfect paradise with them being a major contributor. Another 10 weeks and I'll be collecting eggs.
THANK YOU for sharing your knowledge and giving me the confidence to raise healthy chickens!!

I am new to keeping chickens. Last week I lost my 7-Year old Ragdoll Kitty to a dog attack during the night. Less than 2 days later I lost my Silkie to a dog attack during the day (different dog). I feel so guilty for not protecting them better. It has been heart-breaking and I feel your pain.

It is not always possible to know the best to do, but we try our best at that moment in time. I have made some mistakes in the end of life for some of my feather/fur babies, but the primary thing is not to let them suffer too long when the end is very near.
I lost my beloved 9.5yo alpha chicken about a year ago. I had to take her to the vet to have her put down, it was the kindest act I could give her, even though I still miss her dearly. She will always remain in my heart, and was loved. A faster passing when there is no hope, is always the best course.
Jessica does not sound to have suffered too long in her end of days. So all good.

I don’t think you did anything wrong. Just think of it as she was in hospice care. You made her feel better, gave her a little more time to be with her flock, and helped her over the rainbow bridge in comfort. As a retired RN, I know that just because someone is on hospice, doesn’t mean you don’t treat symptoms for their comfort. And that’s what you did, made her more comfortable at the end. You did good! 🥰🐓🙏🏻

He hid his illness well and just didn't want to give up. It was heartbreaking. The problem with these pets is they simply don't live long enough.

When my dad passed away, it was after my mother found him. He had gone out to offload the hay from a trailer. He didn't come back for quite some time and she became worried. She went out to the barn and found him. It was obvious he had passed hours before hand. When the ambulance arrived, they allowed her to do chest compressions, so that she felt like she personally did everything she could for him.
And that is what we do for those we love. We do everything we can for them. Even if it seems hopeless. Because that is what love is. Its never giving up hope. You did everything for her that you could. And I am sure she knew that. Chickens, as crazy as they can be, seem to know when we are trying to help. Forgive yourself. You did the right thing.

I started crying as soon as I began watching this video because I know it’s heartbreaking to lose a chicken. They’re not just chickens, they’re your babies and you do everything humanly possible to take extra special care of them. I have 4 blue slash marans in my flock and the oldest, Gypsy, is 8 and I always tell her she’s been the best chicken and she’s such a good girl. She rules the roost and sets all the young ones straight. She loves to sit in my lap and be petted, I love it too 💕. She is definitely a special chicken 😊.

It really is heartbreaking...I remember the shock I felt when I lost my first chicken, Violet...a little white Silkie, with no warning. She was perfectly fine in the morning, laid a nice little egg, and when I went out that spring afternoon to give the flock some snacks, she was just laying next to the sand bath, completely stiff, but in pristine condition. No signs of trauma, it was a 60 degree day with plenty of shade and water at their disposal. I felt like I was punched in the gut...and then it really got me when her little buddy, my Silver Sebright bantam looked absolutely lost without her🥺. Chickens are such special creatures 💕

Our squeaky chick passed yesterday after 3 months of struggling from the day he hatched. He made squeaky sounds and was smaller than everyone else but he was so loving cuddly. We shoved medicine down his throat for a week...before I decided enough was enough. His final week he got to eat whatever he wanted, free range the whole yard and, with snacks all day. He had a seizure and died in my arms yesterday afternoon. He will be missed dearly.

Ethyl was a lone hen due to a predator attack. She had been months without her sisters because no one wanted her (she was 8+ years old and wasn't laying eggs). Without my husband knowing (he would never have agreed to me driving over 100 miles to get a hen that didn't lay eggs), I welcomed her into our misfit flock. Under her brown feathers she's all grey, attesting to her age. She was enjoying her newfound sisterhood within a week, and in less than a month she was miraculously laying eggs! She's an ol' soul who'll come by and just sit with me as we both ponder our blessings. Now and then she still blesses us with an egg. God bless you all.

I went thru this same thing recently. I had a young blonde ameracauna who picked me to be her bf and followed me and sat on my lap and jumped on my back if I wasn’t paying her attention. So sweet and so loving. One morning I went to collect eggs and she was dead in the coop. She had shown 0 signs of illness and it hit me so hard I balled for an hour. Then I started questioning myself….. did I not see? Was she showing signs and I didn’t pay attention? For days I cried about it. Then my neighbor reminded me by saying, “April, I don’t know anyone who loves and takes such great care of your chickens. No one I know sits in a chair and lets them on her and love on them so much. You’re a great chicken mom”. We can only do all we can. Right. Blessing and sorry for your loss

Today I lost one of my sweet sheep. She became infected with parasites from our drought ridden pasture. We jumped right into treating her when we realized but it was too late. I realized today that she was losing her battle so we carried her into the shade of the barn, locked all of the others out except her 12 week old twins. I took a chair in and just sat there and rubbed her and scratched her head and watched her slip away. And I cried. I know that I gave Ebony a good life but I still feel like I failed her. Years ago, one of my cats was acting funny. I was working and a friend took her to the vet for me. She brought her back and said the vet recommended keeping her comfortable until she was ready to go. Her kidneys were failing. I called the vet and said, "Doc, you just can't tell me to let my cat go!" He asked me how old she was and I hesitated. I then answered, "23." The moral of the story is that it is never enough. We want the love forever.

I am so sorry you lost your girl. I don't think you should knock yourself too much. This particular chicken meant a lot to you. She was one of your first. Regardless of what you know in your head, you were thinking with your heart. Jessica knew that. She had a great life and even a good ending. You gave her a few extra days with the medicine, which, maybe you both needed. You also had a trying year, which makes these situations even harder to deal with.
You clearly care so much for your birds, and they know it. I have had similar situations with dogs and horses. The good thing is that next time, you will be able to listen more to your head and not just your heart. Remember the love you had for her and all your flock because they prove it by loving you right back. ❤

I raise chickens myself, I have 24 at the moment along with 4 turkeys. My post isn't about my chickens, it's about my great dane I lost in March. He was 8, about to be 9 and he got bloat very suddenly. I took him to the vet and they confirmed that's what it was. We went ahead with operating to correct the stomach issue, he came through that surgery, but then suddenly again he went downhill. The vet talked to me about options and in my heart I knew it was time to let him go, but I needed him with me a little longer so we went ahead with blood and plasma infusions and over the next 30 hours....he wasn't responding so we finally made the right decision and let him go. He spent his last 36 hours in a foreign place, surrounded by foreign people and confused, in pain and who knows what else. I beat myself up everyday since for not doing what my heart told me initially and let him go when it was really his time. I laid with him and told him I loved him until he was fully over the rainbow bridge. I pray for peace for you and your family.

I would make a picture of her and make a memorial wall in your coop in honor of her. Even if it's a small picture, I think it would make you feel proud of the life you gave her.

I started my little family flock less than a year ago. I lost one girl - Joan Jett - suddenly and i was crushed. She waited for me to come home from work and died in my arms. She wasn’t sick - there were no predators. She was just 6 months old. Broke my heart. But it taught me that I am not always in control. My girls and my roo teach me something every day. Thank you for sharing your lovely story.

I got my first chickens last year, March 1st 2023. I got them all as chicks and never had any sickness issues with any of them except for one of my Isa Browns. Last October at just 7 months old, she started showing signs of lethargy and I got a vet out there. She got medications and was fine but in April the same thing started happening again. I brought her in and treated her myself. Would call the vet when I felt like I needed to and then would have to call and cancel because then she started eating again and doing better. She got better and I put her with the flock again but in about a week and a half it was happening again. I took her to the vet, get medicine for her, the medicine didn't work. The vets never really found a definitive illness in her. I kept working with her and she just kept getting weaker but she had days where she would eat pretty good and drink on her own. I took her back to the vet and they found an issue of yeast and bacteria in her crop and seemed very hopeful. This is totally treatable, but the next day, June 1st, I lost her and it was heartbreaking to watch. I blamed myself so much and I really miss her. I tried so hard to save her and couldn't and she fought so hard. Watching this video brings all of those feelings back. I'm not very good at forgiving myself but I know I need to try. I try to remind myself that she was really loved and had a good life, much better than most chickens in the world, but it still hurts. 💔

I'm a first-time chicken mom as of April 27th. Two days ago, I had to put down my sweet speckled sussex, Ginger. I got her and her sisters (Posh, Scary, and Sporty) at 8 weeks old. Ginger was sick since we got her. She had two bouts of coccidiosis. Respiratory infection. I had taken her to the vet multiple times. In the end, her fecal test showed no coccidia, no internal parasites, and her bloodwork was all within normal range. She started losing balance and not being able to walk. I made a sling for her and saw two worms fall off of her. I felt so happy knowing worms are an easy fix. She was still very hungry, just not putting on weight. She wanted to be around her sisters but they kept walking over her. I have two pre-fab coops in a larger run so I put her alone in one of the coop's runs and had the other girls come eat their food right outside of the little fence and they would all lay together. I went to the vet on a high thinking we would treat the worms and she'd be great. This was after emailing the farm and hearing that every SS in that batch was unusually weak and there were a lot of runts. Thankfully I had to sit alone in the room at the vet for a while and it helped me realize that Ginger would never have an easy life and would probably always get sick because she was so weak. Ginger was my little baby and would step into my palm and lay down and curl up and fall asleep in my hand. I cried and cried but I'm glad that her suffering has been eased.

I'm 63 and have done a LOT of soul searching throughout my life. My greatest help has come from my unwavering faith in God! He is my strength! Whenever I've felt guilt, or shame, or regret, and start going down that emotional path, I always hear this loud and clear from Father God... "Make 'right' what you can, ask for forgiveness, forgive yourself because I've forgiven you, and now tuck that 'tool' you've gained from that experience in your 'Toolbelt of Life' (we all have one). The day may come when you have to pull that 'tool' out to help someone else! That is what life is all about! All is well".

You made me cry remembering one of my fave first girls, Goldie (Americana) approx 12 yrs old, who suffered my attempt to clear symptoms of crop impaction. Failing that, I gave med hoping to end her suffering, but when she suddenly appeared to snap back, I tried to clear the med! In hindsight, she was probably in ‘death throes.’ I held her close, soothing w/familiar words and told her how much joy she had brought my life, as her tired, frail body fell limp, leaving me guilty to this day. At 69 yrs., I know now, I might have felt guiltier had I not tried life saving support. “Woulda, Coulda, shoulda.” You went w/your intuition and did the right thing for Jessica.❤

Over the last few years) “ya’ll leave that dog alone, he is trying to die. Have the compassion to finally, let him ease his own suffering. It is time to let him go.” You did. Nothing wrong Dhalia. You gave the old hen a wonderful and comfortable last few hours. You gave her a wonderful and long life and let her have a peaceful death. ❤

Thank you so much for sharing this, I've had many from-the-heart decisions I made caring for my flock. Your advice has helped me at times, but in the end, everyone has a different situation and has to discover what to do that is right for the flock. I only have 3 years in chicken raising... besides this, I want to say this post helped me out the most out of any post I have seen from you. Besides my chickens, I had a pack of dogs, 7 large dogs all of them from the same litter. It's been about 13 years now and the past couple of years I had to see them die one by one. Well, tomorrow I have an appointment to let go of the last one. I feel so bad about bringing him in but keep telling myself I am doing the right thing he is suffering and my hanging on is prolonging his suffering. Your post was like a confirmation to me that it is okay. We have to let go when it is time, it is time. Death is not bad it is the loss of a friend that is. Part of being a friend is letting go when it is time. it isn't just the chicken it is a new page in life and saying bye to the past. I have an Ayam Cemani flock that cheers me up all the time. I never thought I would love chickens so much. They are awesome creatures. So sorry for your loss. I cry with you, Thank you for your channel.😢💙

You did not fail or do anything wrong. You're human....she died. You obviously love those chickens and give them great lives. Don't let four days cancel out 10 years of loving care. My cat was ill and losing weight FAST. Wouldn't take much food or water. Figured she was dying, she was older and a rescue. I just allowed nature to take it's course until she started crying out in pain when I picked her up. I took her to my vet and had them put her down. They took her from me, gave the injection then brought her back to me wrapped in a blanket. I held her while she went to sleep. I talked to her and stroked her. Mine was the last voice she heard and I think she was peaceful. I have had chickens for two years now. What surprises me is how attached I am to them. Thank you for your channel.

    Oh Dalia
I am so sorry for the loss of your feathered friend. May her memory bring you peace.
What a beautiful last gift Jessica gave you! The gift of trusting yourself, your own wisdom.
I hope that you can find the way to treating yourself with the love and kindness that you give to us and to your chickens. You deserve that kindness.
We found out very recently that our landlords won’t be renewing our lease. I’ve been here for 8 years. It’s heartbreaking.
I am on the hunt for a place where no one can send me a text one afternoon telling me that we don’t have a place to live.
We’ve been offered 5 acres - as a gift. We just need to work out the logistics. It’s a work in progress.
One of our first discussions is the chicken coop. A chicken run that is very secure - there are elk, deer, coyote, raccoons, wolves, javelina… lots of wildlife in the area.
We’ve to our chickens what’s going on and that we’ll keep them safe.
    Be kind to yourself. ❤
    Blessings 🐓 🛸 👽

We who love our babies seem to always 2nd guess ourselves. On Monday I had to put down our 10 year old lab Star. She was barely eating or drinking. Her back legs were giving out. Her kidneys were failing and she started with cancer. Her hair was falling out but she once in a little would have that moment of spunk. Fleeting as it was! We made the appointment and she decided to perk up in the way to the vet. I had to keep telling myself that I was doing the right think and to look at the picture as a whole. I keep seeing it over and over and absolutely second guessing my decision. No matter if I had waited longer or made this decision earlier, I would have second guessed it. So for now, I am dealing with her loss and trying to console her co- puppy Luna who is feeling it as well. All this to say, when we care enough to love these little creatures so deeply, we are always striving to do the very best we can for them. We are often our own worst critic. Fortunately they get to rest in peace as we live with the pieces! May you find solace that you did your best. She’s probably hanging out with Star. No worries. Star was GREAT with Chickens!

So sorry that happened! Jessica looked so much like one of our favorites. I'm sure you provided her with a great (and long) life, and you are right to point out that she is not out there resenting you. I know it's hard still. Prayers for you! Glad you have your emotional support chicken with you!
