Once again you have covered a gem from the past. Perhaps I’m biased, for I’m a product of the 1950s, but the styling of the 50s was the most beautiful, the most flowing, with a touch of whimsy-incorporating the hopes and dreams of the space age. The styling was original too. As a child I could immediately see that it was a Dodge, a Ford or a Studebaker; for the designs were unique and not a carbon copy of another manufacturer. Nowadays, a Toyota SUV looks like a Chevy or a Honda or even a Volkswagen-take away or add some trim pieces, modify the plastics on the front end or rear spoiler; you end up with the same blah, blah, blah copycat styling underneath.
Glad you dig this episode I’ve only seen 2 of these in my life and both this year, when I saw the first one I didn’t shoot it because I shot a bunch of other things and then when I got home I realized how rare that was.. and was like shoot I don’t know if I’ll be able to find another one and then when I saw this one I was like gotta do it because God only knows when the next one will be =)
These were rare, rare, rare. I remember those late 50's Dodge station wagons, geez, those were just enormous. Of the 2 or 3 of these that I've ever seen, the rough use which pickups often go through just obliterated those fins. The fins just got shredded.
Great find another year of my birth vehicle and my favorite Dodge truck with the car front styling which is my 1st pick. The second pick I will be different is the rare 1955-59 GMC version of the Cameo the Suburban pickup with Pontiac V8 & hydramatic.

Ford's new Style pickup for 1957 made the Dodge and chevy obsolete they didn't need a car like pickup, the 1967 Ford was a whole new truck. Both Dodge and Chevy followed Ford in 1960 The Canio and Style side were just a band-ade to hold then over to get to the 1960
Yeah totally I would love to cover that I saw a few this summer but I miss my opportunity I didn’t realize how rare they were cause I saw like 10 of them in a line, there was also swept side dodge did that one this year ruclips.net/video/ZVzR0t-dwu0/видео.htmlfeature=shared
It is a very 😎 truck, the design is awesome and the paint color and finish is stunning!!:🤩 I think I'd rather have the '58, but wouldn't mind the '59 either. I like the '59 steering wheel and dash the best! Second scenario, I do really like the Ranchero, but the Cameo is really cool also. I'd rather have the Cameo, and a Sunliner. Cool video 😀
The 1957 Dodge Sweptside was not designed to compete with the Ranchero. It was designed to compete with the new for 1957 Ford Styleside pickup. Ford had two bed styles beginning with the F series of trucks in 1957. The Flareside was the more traditional style that had separate rear fenders outside the cargo bed. The Styleside's bed had flush, flowing fenders that did not bulge, like the Chevy Cameo Carrier. The Ranchero was a car based pickup, derived from the new for 1957 Ford station wagon. Although the Ranchero was a pickup, it was nowhere near as rugged of a truck. The Ranchero spawned the 1959 Chevy ElCamino. Al
What Exner was able to do with the front end, by only cutting the fenders and adding the front cap is genius. Grafting on the station wagon fins to give it the El Camino/Ranchero type look, while still being a truck is well executed as well. I believe the poly engine in 1957 was a 318. Am I remembering incorrectly? !957 Dodge and 1957 Cameo - actually I’d like both! Thanks as always ~ Chuck P.S. How was Mecum overall? Did you get to enjoy it?
Mecum was a bit disappointing don’t get me wrong they had some cool cars there but I was expecting to see a bunch of 50 cars that I don’t ever see, and auctions are totally different I guess what I really want is to go to a car show like Hershey every time I go and it’s not like that unfortunately.. I’ve asked a lot of my car friends why don’t they have a national orphan meet Think about it they have a Corvette national they got Chevy nationals they got Mopar nationals everybody has a national meat except for the orphan cars I think we need to do that I think it needs to be a thing there’s tons of cars out there that are really cool that don’t get their own show because it’s a car brand that doesn’t exist anymore.. and honestly the orphan cars are the better cars than a lot of aspects for example 1957 Studebaker golden hawk blows the doors off of a 57 Chevy Belair.. in my opinion Thank you so much for the correction of the 315 I see so much conflicting information I think it’s 315/325 Polly had they did make a 318 as well but I believe that was just a regular engine I could be wrong Dodge is weird
@@What.its.like. There is an Orphan Car Show in Yipslanti Michigan every year that is quite large. I think Gilmore does one annually as well. I’m sure there are others. Your point is well made - so many of them were superior. Sorry Mecum wasn’t what you had hoped but it still sounds cool. Thanks for all you do - you’re awesome ~ Chuck
I wanna see what happened in Carlisle a lot of people go out to that show and I feel like if they had an orphan show it would put orphans on the map.. I have no idea who I would have to talk to you to see if that could be a reality I have a goal in 5 to 10 years or whatever I want to eventually have my own venue to host weddings that has a barn or at least two barns on a piece of property but you can’t see what the other barns are doing I would love to host a car show a weekly car show and I won’t charge anything, just to prove it can be done. Here in Pennsylvania it’s all about the mighty dollar I don’t I think a lot of summer fun has been ruined because everybody wants to make a quick buck.
I like the '58 the best. I'm not sure what engine it had, probably the poly V8, or which year it was, but I had a friend who had one of these. He had a 392 Hemi he wanted to put in it but never did before he sold it. Did you look to see what the bed sides were made out of? The Chevy Cameos were fiberglass. It stands to reason as those sides looked more like they were from 1954. Chey replaced theirs with the Fleetside, which was similar but was all steel. Dodge went to more of a boxy bed but with the next generation cab, they resurrected the Sweptline name. Dodge supplied Studebaker it's old style boxy bed, which Studebaker built on a truck chassis but had a Lark-style cab. Good video!
I’m not sure what the fins were made out of we were discussing that when walking around the truck I went with a group of guys. I have a family of people out in Lancaster that I hang out with every time I go out there at least I try to who I know just from the channel.. The car culture out there is second to none as they would put it a lot of auto industry started out there I can’t explain what the car culture is like in Lancaster Pennsylvania but it’s absolutely incredible anytime I get back home I just kind of feel homesick because all of the really nice stuff is out there.. honestly I can’t wait until Hershey I wanna cover so many cars that don’t often get talked about that’s why I really want this channel to go I want this to be a go to orphan car channel there are so many cool cars out there that nobody talks about. Bit of a sidenote it’s really sad that most shows I go to the stuff that I look for 30s 40s 50s I like 60s cars I like muscle cars but the 30s cars are very very rarely seen at shows now, Outside the model A. And it’s just sad that’s all it was a long time ago and I wasn’t here for it and it makes me miss it 50s cars are getting hard to find a car shows around here I mean outside the tri five Chevy. The cameo used fiberglass sides but I’m not sure about this one I always thought that this one was fiberglass and they tack them on they’re kind of like how Studebaker did but not sure
@@What.its.like.the fins are steel, straight off of the two door Dodge station wagon, as you said in the video. Maybe you need to start watching your own videos. LOL 😂.
@@What.its.like. Definitely no fiber glass on the wagons. Dodge might have used metal on the Sweepliner. Someday I may find one of these again and check for myself. Chevy was already building the Corvette out of fiberglass, so maybe they told the fiberglass builder to mould some sides for the pick-up and because projects like these are planned years in advance, Chevy probably told them to style them so they resembled a 53-54 Chevy car. GM has been slow to change things. Look at the original 1959 El Camino. It was built the same as their cars. It did get the 1960 upgrade but then they built the same El Camino through the 1963 model year! Ford didn't do that with the Ranchero. It went from the full size Ford and was reborn as the Falcon Ranchero.
This was the only Vehicle I shot there, started doing 59 el camino but didn’t get to finish it I lost the group I was with and had to find them.. I’ll have to see what the footage looks like for that I’m not sure if I got all the gauges
Hard to decide which Sweptside I like best, but would prefer it to to the Cameo as it is rarer. And yet the nod would go to Ranchero because it is the most car like. One other occurrence for 1957 was that John Dieffenbaker was elected for prime minister., but most have forgotten about him.
1958, due to better integration of the 2-tone white panel (has a step down to avoid the bent look on the 1957). I like the Cameo. My family had a 1957 Ford Fairlane sedan, so I've always liked the first-year Ranchero, but the Cameo just has a presence.
That’s what I originally thought too but according to this article as well as some other sources it said that it was made with suburban wagon parts www.motorbiscuit.com/strange-story-of-1957-dodge-sweptside-pickup/
The cars may have had 12v electric in 1957 but Dodge and Fargo flathead 6 cylinder trucks were positive ground 6volt. I'm not sure about the V-8 models. Probably were too, never saw one and I'm almost 68yo.
1 '57, but I'd want the '58 dashboard... 2) Dodge. Wow! These things ARE rare! I love the underhood on this. So easy to work on! Sadly, from the look of it, my rather large @$$ wouldn't fit behind the wheel. And I, personally, don't consider Ranchero's/El Camino's "trucks"... more like convertible station wagons.
The comparisons of the Dodge Sweptside to the Ford Ranchero would have been better if the Ford F150 line of pickups would have been better. It would be comparing truck to truck instead to comparing a struck to the chopped-off station wagon Ranchero.
@@What.its.like. Yes, they put them in the showrooms, when I walked home (yep kids back then did that 1.2 miles) walked past the Pontiac, Studebaker, which also had MB, VW (which also carried Brit sport cars, Dodge, Chevy, Buick and Ford stores on my way home. I was 9 in 1957, the sales guys would hand out lollipops and were very friendly to kids back then. All those dealerships didn't mind a young kid looking over the showroom. Never got asked to leave.
.....thanks for the vid.....the Sweptside is misproportioned and ungainly looking, but that's Dr. Exner and Mr. Bizarro......take a clean Exner design ('57 Plymouth) and let Dr. Bizarro give it a really weird front end look, tack on some tacky and bizzare looking tail fins and tail light treatment and VOILA! you have the '57 Dodge.....I prefer the regular '57 Chevy pickup over the Cameo model also, although the Cameo is certainly better proportioned than the Dodge.....the "57 Ranchero is an icon, and my favorite of this bunch....
I’ve only seen one other one and it was a month ago or so I didn’t realize how rare it was until I got home and researched it.. I wonder why they didn’t sell that well
A lot of companies made the suburban not just GMC it was a style of car before it was a brand. Nash made a suburban, desoto, Plymouth dodge Chevy GMC lots of companies
What a terrible looking truck! I had never seen or heard of it before but it looks a lot like a homemade contraption that is half dodge car and half truck. Definitely not for me, so for the choice between the '57, '58, or '59 Sweptside I would chose none of the above. But for the second selection I would go with the Chevrolet Cameo, as it has a nice look to it and later I believe evolved into the popular Chevrolet Apache truck.

Ford's new Style pickup for 1957 made the Dodge and chevy obsolete they didn't need a car like pickup, the 1967 Ford was a whole new truck. Both Dodge and Chevy followed Ford in 1960 The Canio and Style side were just a band-ade to hold then over to get to the 1960
I like basic 2wd 1/2 ton trucks.👍
=)
My brother is in the process of restoring a 1957 Cameo that used to belong to my dad. It has a V-8 now. Maybe a video on the 56-58 Cameo is coming???
Yeah totally I would love to cover that I saw a few this summer but I miss my opportunity I didn’t realize how rare they were cause I saw like 10 of them in a line, there was also swept side dodge did that one this year
ruclips.net/video/ZVzR0t-dwu0/видео.htmlfeature=shared
It is a very 😎 truck, the design is awesome and the paint color and finish is stunning!!:🤩 I think I'd rather have the '58, but wouldn't mind the '59 either. I like the '59 steering wheel and dash the best! Second scenario, I do really like the Ranchero, but the Cameo is really cool also. I'd rather have the Cameo, and a Sunliner. Cool video 😀
=) glad you dig this video
Ford Ranchero for me.
Of the 3 Dodge Sweptsides, the 1959 interests me more. Of the 3 manufacturers, the Chevy pickup interests me more.
Sweet choices =)
I like the 57 sweptline, but prefer the tail lights of the 59
I would be afraid of scratching, and bending the bed if I had it. I would probably use it as a pickup and work it.
My Father own 1959 Dodge Power Wagon with a 318 CID V8 From 1967--71
That’s awesome did he like it?
@@What.its.like. He put side marker lights from a Freightliner truck , He also took it on hunting trips.
I’ve asked a lot of my car friends why don’t they have a national orphan meet Think about it they have a Corvette national they got Chevy nationals they got Mopar nationals everybody has a national meat except for the orphan cars I think we need to do that I think it needs to be a thing there’s tons of cars out there that are really cool that don’t get their own show because it’s a car brand that doesn’t exist anymore.. and honestly the orphan cars are the better cars than a lot of aspects for example 1957 Studebaker golden hawk blows the doors off of a 57 Chevy Belair.. in my opinion
Thank you so much for the correction of the 315 I see so much conflicting information I think it’s 315/325 Polly had they did make a 318 as well but I believe that was just a regular engine I could be wrong Dodge is weird
I have no idea who I would have to talk to you to see if that could be a reality I have a goal in 5 to 10 years or whatever
I want to eventually have my own venue to host weddings that has a barn or at least two barns on a piece of property but you can’t see what the other barns are doing I would love to host a car show a weekly car show and I won’t charge anything, just to prove it can be done. Here in Pennsylvania it’s all about the mighty dollar I don’t I think a lot of summer fun has been ruined because everybody wants to make a quick buck.
The 1957 truck still had the 315 in it. I'm currently restoring a 57' sweptside.
I love that old truck better than Pee-Wee Herman's bike
=)
LOL 😂.
Well I wasn’t sure if they were fiber glass on the wagons either lol
@@What.its.like. if you look closely, under the chrome strips and two tone paint, all 57 and 58 Mopar wagons have the same quarter panels.
Would love to hear about the Plymouth that was next to this truck.
This was the only Vehicle I shot there, started doing 59 el camino but didn’t get to finish it I lost the group I was with and had to find them.. I’ll have to see what the footage looks like for that I’m not sure if I got all the gauges
I love how you research each vehicle and show every part of it, but I wish you didn't do the "Toodle loo" part. But that's just me.
Ranchero! I'm a Ford truck man.
WYR 1 57 WWR 2 Cameo, hands down.2nd choice Ranchero.
Sweet choices =)
Hard to decide which Sweptside I like best, but would prefer it to to the Cameo as it is rarer. And yet the nod would go to Ranchero because it is the most car like. One other occurrence for 1957 was that John Dieffenbaker was elected for prime minister., but most have forgotten about him.
The cameo is rarer I know that they’re rare but I’ve seen more cameos than I’ve ever seen of this truck
1958, due to better integration of the 2-tone white panel (has a step down to avoid the bent look on the 1957). I like the Cameo. My family had a 1957 Ford Fairlane sedan, so I've always liked the first-year Ranchero, but the Cameo just has a presence.
Your totally right, this has a presence as well
Cartender, gimme a ‘58 Sweptside; a Ranchero, and Diablo sammich. And make it snappy!
Hahaha
The box was a standard stepside box with fenders grafted on.
That’s what I originally thought too but according to this article as well as some other sources it said that it was made with suburban wagon parts
www.motorbiscuit.com/strange-story-of-1957-dodge-sweptside-pickup/
Yes the fenders are, but the box is just a standard box.
The cars may have had 12v electric in 1957 but Dodge and Fargo flathead 6 cylinder trucks were positive ground 6volt. I'm not sure about the V-8 models. Probably were too, never saw one and I'm almost 68yo.
Interesting =)
1: All 3.
2: All 3.
Someone beat me to the tune, but the Beach Boys have great songs.
Great choices I’m a huge Beech boys fan they’re probably my favorite band
@@What.its.like. They're in my top 10.
The Ranchero...
Can you review a 1957 dodge royal lancer, my great grandma had one
I would love to I’ve been looking for some forward look Dodges they are just really hard to find I’ll add that to the list =)
'57 Dodge all the way!
Sweet =)
1) I'd take a 1959 Sweptside.
2) Ranchero.
Sweet choices =)
In wyr id have to take the black Lincoln’s in both cases
Sweet =)
Wasn’t the Dodge wagon called the Sierra ? Plymouth made the Suburban.
Thank you for pointing that out I thought the same thing but they did make a two-door Dodge suburban wagon
Hi Justin, Chevrolet/GMC, Ford and Dodge where trying to sell pickup trucks to the Harry homeowner, and they did so! Please reply. Dave...
Totally true good to see you man I missed seeing you in comments =)
I would rather have a 1958 Stepside.
Yeah it’s sad that these are that rare I wonder why they didn’t make that many
@@What.its.like.because they were expensive.
$23,000 dollars equivalent the average truck now cost more than double that.. I wish a brand new truck could be had at that price
@@What.its.like. pickups are the money makers for the manufacturers.
57 with the Polyhead V8
Sweet =)
The comparisons of the Dodge Sweptside to the Ford Ranchero would have been better if the Ford F150 line of pickups would have been better. It would be comparing truck to truck instead to comparing a struck to the chopped-off station wagon Ranchero.
This is the missing like between a car/ truck and a truck this is a truck/wagon =)
57 Sweptside-- 57 Ranchero
Sweet choices =)
The Ranchero is head and shoulders above the Chev and Dodge. The dodge looks more Compleat than a Cameo. The Cameo looks half done.
I can understand why they didn't sell well, they look like they slapped the rear quarter panel from the 2 door wagon to a short bed pickup
I was wondering if they put these in show rooms..
The paint scheme doesn’t line up perfect and this truck doesn’t look good at all angles
It would have been a great time to be alive..
.....thanks for the vid.....the Sweptside is misproportioned and ungainly looking, but that's Dr.
The dodge is the only truck to have fins I don’t think the cameo has fins which is interesting
I heard 57 Fords were lenons
I’ve driven a 57 ford skyliner and it wasn’t what I expected. Floaty but wallowed
I have to say the design does take some getting used to. It's looks very 1950s.
Yeah it doesn’t look good at every angle
The Chevy.
the 57 dodge
Sweet =)
57 ranchero
none of the above, Chevy
You're a Chevy fan!
Ford Ranchero.
I’ll have to find one to review lots going for that choice
Late to the party today. 1. 58 Sweptside. 2. Ranchero
Early day today I had to go to a wedding and I didn’t take my phone
I have to echo another comment….I don’t think that I have ever seen this model driving on the street. Odd hybrid of the car truck world.
I’ve only seen one other one and it was a month ago or so I didn’t realize how rare it was until I got home and researched it.. I wonder why they didn’t sell that well
I’d pick the 1957 GMC Suburban….look it up it’s not what you think .
A lot of companies made the suburban not just GMC it was a style of car before it was a brand. Nash made a suburban, desoto, Plymouth dodge Chevy GMC lots of companies
@@What.its.like. actually I was referring to GMCs version of the Cameo which they called Suburban.
the 59
=) awesome
And 59
Ranchero
Sweet =)
Be true to your school
Yeah buddy =)
What a terrible looking truck! I had never seen or heard of it before but it looks a lot like a homemade contraption that is half dodge car and half truck. Definitely not for me, so for the choice between the '57, '58, or '59 Sweptside I would chose none of the above. But for the second selection I would go with the Chevrolet Cameo, as it has a nice look to it and later I believe evolved into the popular Chevrolet Apache truck.
